<p>In terms of the mid-range list, with the release of multiple new machines equipped with mid-range SoCs, this month&#8217;s rankings have also changed, but they still haven&#8217;t challenged the number one OPPO Reno 3.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-321196" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers.png?x10805" alt="" width="600" height="451" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers-300x226.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers-80x60.png 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers-265x198.png 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Antutu-top-10-midrangers-559x420.png 559w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>The OPPO Reno3 5G with a Dimensity 1000L chipset manages an average score of 405,159 points to occupy the top spot. The Kirin 820-powered Honor 30S burst into the scene to occupy the second spot, edging out the Exynos 980-powered Vivo X30 5G. The third position is occupied by another new entrant &#8211; Vivo S6 5G equipped with an Exynos 980 SoC.</p>
<p>The Redmi K30 5G with a Snapdragon 765G chipset is at the fourth spot while the Vivo X30 is now ranked at number 5. The sixth to tenth spots are occupied by Vivo Z6 (Snapdragon 765G), OPPO Reno 3 Pro (Snapdragon 765G), Honor 9X Pro (Kirin 810), Huawei Nova 6 SE (Kirin 810) and Honor Play 4T Pro (Kirin 810).</p>
<p>One important thing to note from the ranking is the gradual dominance of 5G smartphones. Apart from the bottom three Huawei models powered by the 4G Kirin 810 chipset, all other phones that make up the top 10 are 5G-enabled. This means in the next few months, we won&#8217;t only be having several flagship 5G phones but also 5G mid-rangers.</p>
<p>As an afterthought, I&#8217;m wondering why OEMs are still shunning the Dimensity 1000L despite its superb benchmark perform. Perhaps, benchmarks don&#8217;t sell phones, right?</p>

Announced last week and appearing first in the spanking new Honor 30S, this chipset is one of Huawei&#8217;s most powerful processor. For this edition of Chip Battle, we want to see how it measures up to another mid-range 5G chipset &#8211; the Snapdragon 765G.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-314859 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-vs-Snapdragon-765G-e1586083429400.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G vs Snapdragon 765G" width="719" height="288" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-vs-Snapdragon-765G-e1586083429400.jpg 719w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-vs-Snapdragon-765G-e1586083429400-300x120.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-vs-Snapdragon-765G-e1586083429400-696x279.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px" /></p>
<p><strong>CPU</strong></p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G is a <strong>7nm</strong> chipset with a <strong>prime core</strong> (Cortex-A76) clocked at <strong>2.36GHz</strong> and <strong>three performance cores</strong> (Cortex-A76) at <strong>2.22GHz</strong> and f<strong>our efficiency cores</strong> clocked at <strong>1.84GHz</strong>.</p>
<p>For the Snapdragon 765G, we have a 7nm octa-core chipset too with a <strong>Kryo 475 Prime core (Cortex-A76) clocked at 2.4GHz</strong>, a <strong>Kryo 475 Gold core (Cortex-A76) clocked at 2.2GHz</strong> and <strong>six Kryo 475 Silver cores (Cortex-A55) clocked at 1.8GHz</strong>.</p>
<p>Just looking at the cores, one can see the Kirin 820 5G is the more powerful processor as it has four Cortex-A76 cores whereas the Snapdragon 765G has just two. However, for more practical evidence, below are benchmark results from Geekbench.</p>
[envira-gallery id=&#8221;314838&#8243;]
<p>As you can see, the Kirin 820 5G has significantly higher scores compared to the Snapdragon 765G (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-k30-5g/">Redmi K30 5G</a>).</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-314841" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-AnTuTu-b.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G AnTuTu" width="690" height="493" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-AnTuTu-b.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-AnTuTu-b-300x214.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-AnTuTu-b-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Kirin-820-5G-AnTuTu-b-588x420.jpg 588w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>Scores from AnTuTu are no different either as the Kirin 820 5G scored <strong>130,080</strong> points while the Snapdragon 765G scored <strong>104,223</strong> points.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>GPU</strong></p>
<p>The GPU of the Kirin 820 5G is a <strong>Mali-G57</strong> with six cores while that of the Snapdragon 765G is the <strong>Adreno 620</strong>. According to the AnTuTu benchmark result above, the Mali-G57 is a more powerful GPU as it scored <strong>116,516</strong> points in the benchmark result as against the Adreno 620 which scored <strong>92,536</strong> points.</p>
[envira-gallery id=&#8221;314843&#8243;]
<p>In another AnTuTu test, the Kirin 820 5G scored <strong>119,839</strong> points (GPU) which is higher than the <strong>93,977</strong> points scored by the Snapdragon 765G-powered OPPO Reno3 Pro.</p>
<p>In the above benchmark result, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor-30s/">Honor 30S</a> (Kirin 820 5G) doesn&#8217;t just floor the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/oppo-reno-3-pro-5g/">OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G</a> (Snapdragon 765G) in CPU and GPU performance but also outshines it in the other areas too. Yes, we know the AnTuTu version numbers are not the same but even if they were, the Kirin 820 5G will still come out on top.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Others</strong></p>
<p>In terms of connectivity, both processors support SA and NSA 5G networks. There is Bluetooth 5.0 on the Snapdragon 765G while the Kirin 820 5G has Bluetooth 5.1. With respect to GPS, the Kirin 820 5G doesn&#8217;t support NavIC, unlike the Snapdragon 765G which does.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G is definitely one of the most powerful processors <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> has ever made and no <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> mid-range chipset can hold its own against it. However, we won&#8217;t be surprised if Qualcomm announces a new mid-range chipset later this year that surpasses the Kirin 820 5G. The San Diego-based semiconductor company is known for churning out new SoCs pretty frequently and it most likely already has one on the horizon.</p>

<p>In the interview, the senior executive from the Huawei subsidiary answered various questions regarding the new products and the company&#8217;s current direction and plans for the year 2020. One such question was regarding the new proprietary chipset the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-820/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kirin 820 5G SoC</a>, which is housed in the Honor 30S. <p>The Kirin 820 SoC utilizes much of the same architecture as the company&#8217;s current flagship processor, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-990/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the Kirin 990</a>. It is built on a similar 7nm process technology and features a built in 5G modem, which is impressive considering it will be found in a smartphone priced between 2000 to 2500 Yuan (roughly 281 to 352 US Dollars). So, it can be assumed that it fills in the gap between high end and mid range smartphones.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/04/01/xiaomi-smartphone-sales-take-a-hit-from-coronavirus-but-demand-expected-to-pick-up/">Xiaomi smartphone sales take a hit from Coronavirus, but demand expected to pick up</a></strong></h6>
<p>In regards to one of its primary rivals, Qualcomm, George Zhao stated that Kirin 820 is a mid to high end SoC with an integrated 5G modem. This is different from Qualcomm&#8217;s current flagship the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm-snapdragon-865/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Snapdragon 865 SoC</a> which features a discrete 5G modem. In simpler terms, the latter is capable of noticeably better performance, but the key difference here is pricing as the Qualcomm chipset is primarily found in premium grade flagships which are generally expensive.</p>
<figure id="attachment_309024" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-309024" style="width: 750px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-309024 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-865.jpg?x10805" alt="Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Soc" width="750" height="478" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-865.jpg 750w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-865-300x191.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-865-696x444.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/qualcomm-snapdragon-865-659x420.jpg 659w" sizes="(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-309024" class="wp-caption-text">Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC</figcaption></figure>
<p>Thus, in this regard, Qualcomm has no immediate and direct competitor to the Kirin 820 SoC, since the Snapdragon 865 is a flagship processor while the SD700G series have yet to catch up. During the interview, George Zhao also placed an emphasis on competition, stating that rivalry and innovation is what drives the industry forward in advancement.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Huawei has been leading in on-device AI processing on mobile chipsets for the past couple of years. The company’s Kirin 970 was the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2017/09/02/huawei-unveils-kirin-970-worlds-first-processor-dedicated-npu/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">first mobile SoC to feature a dedicated NPU</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (Neural Processing Unit). Later, in the following year, the Kirin 980 became the </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/08/31/kirin-980-is-official-worlds-first-7nm-chipset-with-two-dedicated-npus/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">world’s first mobile SoC to feature a dual NPU design</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, even with a single-core NPU on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/30/honor-unveils-7nm-kirin-820-5g-chipset-brings-big-improvements-over-the-kirin-810/">Kirin 820</a> 5G chipset, the manufacturer has mastered AI performance. In fact, the newest mid-range silicon from the company is 73% better in AI processing than its predecessor </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/06/21/huawei-announces-kirin-810-chipset/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kirin 810</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from last year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Talking about pure AI-Benchmark score, the all-new Kirin 820 5G garners 41838 points, and thus makes its way to the third position. The first two places are occupied by Kirin 990 5G and </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/26/mediatek-dimensity-1000-5g-high-end-chip-launch/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> with an overall score of 70185 and 56158 respectively. Also, it is worth noting that non-5G version of </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/06/huawei-announces-the-flagship-kirin-990-and-kirin-990-5g-feature-up-to-2-3gbps-download-speeds/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Kirin 990</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> scores lesser than the new Kirin 820 5G with a score of 41773 points</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Smartphones-wise, the Honor 30S with the Kirin 820 5G bags the 6th position with a score of 60843 points. Unsurprisingly, the top 7 positions are acquired by Huawei and Honor smartphones with </span><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/26/huawei-p40-launched-as-a-compact-flagship-with-50mp-triple-cameras-and-3x-optical-zoom/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Huawei P40</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> leading the chart. This is because we are yet to see a smartphone powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC.</span></p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-313614" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-featured.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G featured" width="690" height="460" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-featured.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-featured-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-featured-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G is a 7nm processor that is touted as an upgraded version of the Kirin 810.</p>
<p>Starting with the CPU, the Kirin 820 5G has 8 cores arranged in a <strong>1+3+4</strong> configuration. There is a <strong>prime Cortex-A76</strong> core clocked at <strong>2.36GHz</strong> and it is paired with <strong>three other Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.22GHz</strong>. The remaining four cores are <strong>Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.84GHz</strong>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-313616" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G CPU" width="690" height="460" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>The Kirin 820 comes with a <strong>Mali-G57</strong> GPU with six cores, but the clockspeed wasn&#8217;t mentioned. There is also a new feature called Kirin Gaming+ 2.0 that should bring improvements to gaming.</p>
<p>There is 1 Big core for the NPU and a Kirin ISP 5.0 inside the new chipset. The new ISP is 15% more energy-efficient and brings a 30% reduction in image noise with support for BM3D SLR image noise reduction. This is the same ISP used in the Kirin 990.</p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G is said to offer a 27% improvement in performance compared to the Kirin 810. It also brings a 38% improvement in GPU capabilities. While the new NPU improves AI performance by 73%.</p>

A few days ago, some key details of the processor were leaked on the web. Now benchmark results have surfaced that compare it to the Kirin 980 and even Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon 855.</p>
<p>A graph comparing the benchmark scores of the three chipsets was posted on Weibo and it shows the Kirin 820 5G scored 3490 points in the single-core test and 11200 points in the multi-core test.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-311947" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-Geekbench.jpg?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G Geekbench" width="640" height="378" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-Geekbench.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-Geekbench-300x177.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></p>
<p>The chipset scored higher than the Kirin 980 processor which powers phones such as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-p30/">Huawei P30</a> series and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-20/">Mate 20</a> series. It even scores higher than the Snapdragon 855 in the single-core test and ties with it for multi-score.</p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G is a 7nm processor with Cortex-A76 cores and a Mali-G77 GPU. Based on its Geekbench scores, we presume it has four Cortex-A76 cores paired with four Cortex-A55 cores. It has also been revealed that the chipset will have an upgraded NPU and ISP.</p>
<p>Honor&#8217;s upcoming phone, the Honor 30S, should be the first device with a Kirin 820 5G chipset.</p>

There have been reports of one coming soon and it is expected to power the Honor 30S. Specs of the chipset which is reported to be called the Kirin 820 5G have been leaked today by a leaker.</p>
<p>The info was posted on Weibo by <em>Digital Chat Station</em>. According to the leaker, the Kirin 820 will be a 7nm chipset with Cortex-A77 CPU cores and a Mali-G77 GPU. He also added that the chipset will have an upgraded ISP and NPU.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-311065" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-specs.png?x10805" alt="Kirin 820 5G specs" width="724" height="131" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-specs.png 724w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-specs-300x54.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Kirin-820-5G-specs-696x126.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px" /></p>
<p>The info doesn&#8217;t reveal the CPU arrangement, so we do not know how many Cortex-A77 cores it has. However, it appears to be more powerful than the Snapdragon 765G whose Kryo 475 cores are based on the Cortex-A76. However, it should be able to take on the MediaTek <a href="http://gimzochina.com/tag/dimensity-1000l">Dimensity 1000L</a> which also has Cortex-A77 cores and a Mali-G77 GPU.</p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G chipset is expected to launch tomorrow based on a statement by Zhao Ming, the president of <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/honor">Honor</a>. The top executive said on Weibo that there will be an announcement tomorrow which is the 8th anniversary of Vmall, Huawei (and Honor&#8217;s) online mall. The announcement will be for a “new product whose core has been redesigned”. This statement is implied to be a hint for the new chipset.</p>
<p>The Kirin 820 5G will appear first in the Honor 30S but expect more devices to follow shortly after it is launched.</p>
