The year is almost over and all the top processors have been released and anyone can now purchase a phone that has any of the chips. While the manufacturers have released benchmark scores comparing them against each other, it’s still important to see how they perform outside the laboratories.

Weibo user @ice universe has benchmarked the top 6 processors against each other and the results are pretty interesting. He has also listed out the strong points of each processor.

The result shows Huawei’s Kirin 960 winning scoring highest in memory latency, memory bandwidth, and Dijkstra algorithm value. The Helio X25 CPU is no slouch either as it wins in some areas too. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chip also ranks in HDR and Face Detection.

READ MORE: Xiaomi Meri Rumored to feature In-House Processor

Samsung’s Exynos 8890 is best at encryption and lossless data compression (LZMA). The older snapdragon CPU however fails to win any category which is not surprising as the Snapdragon 821 is supposed to be better than it in all ways. But it does score a little higher than the SD821 in encryption.

Now, as you may know, TENAA doesn’t list the name of the processor but we were able to determine that using the CPU clock speed listed on the TENAA record for the V8 Max.

Earlier on, TENAA’s listing pegged the CPU clock speed of the V8 Max at 2.3GHz and since Honor uses Kirin chipsets, we identified the Kirin 950 as the processor in question. This is where things change, as the new Honor V8 Max smartphone is listed as having a CPU clock speed of 2.5GHz in addition to supporting entire network.

The shift in the clocking frequency from 2.3GHz to 2.5GHz means this V8 Max version sports possibly a Kirin 955 SoC which clocks at 2.5GHz.

Read More: The 6.6-inch Honor V8 Max Phablet said to be launching in August

The juice doesn’t stop there, as the new V8 Max model equally wears a different memory chip inside its hood, packing a higher 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM, higher than the 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM on the version listed earlier.

In other features, both versions pull their weight together, sporting 6.6-inch 2k display, 13MP main camera, 8MP front camera unit, massive 4,400mAh battery and Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed inside both.

The latest information from China reveals that the Honor V8 Max will be launched in August this year, possibly on August 1 and is expected to carry a 1999 yuan ($450) price tag.

But the company is also a player in the server market. We have heard about the servers from the company before, but the one that Huawei released recently is definitely worth our attention. The company has, for the first time, released a server powered by a processor with 16-core custom architecture.

Huawei has been making considerable progress in the silicon industry, thanks to its Hisilicon chipset department. Although the earlier Kirin chips from the company were not that impressive, the ones that have been released recently, like the Kirin 955 and 950 are quite powerful and efficient, putting Huawei smartphones at par with most flagships in the market. But Huawei uses ARM’s stock architecture on its Kirin chips for smartphones. On the other hand, for its new server, the company has reportedly used a self-developed 64-bit processor Hi1612a architecture, manufactured on TSMC’s 16nm process, with up to 16 cores on board and compatible with ARMv8-A instruction set. Further, the company is said to hold some IP rights related to large data analysis, cloud computing and information search.

Huawei’s processors for smartphones have been till now limited to eight-core architecture. It is said that the company decided to develop a custom architecture for its new server because the server market is a very complex. There are a lot of factors to be considered like stability, reliability, long-term supply etc, but the development period could be long. Hence, the company had the time to develop its own custom architecture for its new product.

However, when it comes to the consumer smartphone market, the company will reportedly stick with ARM’s stock architecture because the development period is really short. So, it doesn’t look like Huawei plans to release a custom processor for smartphones and consumer market anytime soon.

Still, it’s good to see Huawei’s silicon arm progressing.

The company’s new Kirin 950 and 955 chipsets are good enough to compete with MediaTek’s top end flagship SoCs. Naturally, we could expect the upcoming Kirin 960 chipset to be even more powerful and today, we have got some details about the chip from the noted analyst from China, Pan Jiutang.

Kirin 950

He reveals today that Kirin 960 may not be a huge upgrade as compared to the current generation Kirin 955, but still there are some things that are going to change like the Cores inside. Huawei will reportedly stick with TSMC’s 16nm process for the Kirin 960, but the high-end Cortex A72 cores inside will be replaced by its successor, Artemis cores. So, the Kirin 960 will be a combination of Artemis cores and Cortex A53 cores in an octa-core architecture.

In terms of GPU, the company is said to upgrade to an octa-core one, much-needed upgrade from the current quad-core Mali-T880 MP4 GPU found in the Kirin 950. Finally, the chip is said to come with support for Cat. 12 LTE networks and CDMA networks, becoming the first true full netcom chip from the company. These specs would also make the most powerful chip from the company till date!

It is still early to know whether this information will turn out to be true, but the analyst is usually right with his predictions. We can expect official details sometime in the second half of the year.

Apart from the dual camera setup on the back, we were also interested to see the performance of the Kirin 955 chipset that powers the device. It is reportedly a slightly upgraded version of the Kirin 950 that powers the company’s other smartphones like the Mate 8. And now, we have the initial benchmark results of the chipset.

To recap, the Kirin 955 comes with 4 x Cortex A72 clocked at 2.5GHz and 4 x Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. As for GPU, there will be Mali-T880. In comparison, the Kirin 950 is clocked only at 2.3GHz. So, let’s see the Kirin 955 benchmark performance below.

For now, we only have the Geekbench results, courtesy of IT168. In the single-core Geekbench test, the Kirin 955 managed to score 1809 which is quite good. However, it’s not at par with Snapdragon 820 or even Exynos 8890 that scores 2353 and 2139 respectively. However, this score does manage to beat the deca-core Helio X20 in the same test which scores 1790. The difference is just marginal of only about 20 points.

Coming to the multi-core test, Huawei’s Kirin 955 really shines with a score of 6415 points. Only the Exynos 8890 scores above Kirin 955 with a score of 7497. Snapdragon 820 is behind with 5466 followed by the Helio X20 which scores only 4483 even with its deca-core setup.

Moving on to the GPU performance, as expected, they are not really at par with chips from Samsung and Qualcomm. Huawei’s Kirin 955 only managed 23.2 Fps on the Unified Cross-Platform 3D Graphics benchmark (T-Rex Offscreen), whereas Helio X20 got a marginally better 24.8 Fps. Snapdragon 810 gets around 46.8 Fps which is pretty good, but what’s really amazing is that both Exynos 8890 and SD820 get above 80 Fps. So, GPU is one area where both Kirin 955 and Helio X20 have to work on.

So, that was the first Kirin 955 benchmark results we have seen. What do you think? Good enough for a flagship?

However, from the numerous earlier leaks, we were hinted that the P9 family would be large, featuring at least four devices. Since, we only saw two yesterday, we were wondering whether the other two would end up being announced. Well, today, a few pictures of the Huawei P9 Lite were revealed, which confirms that the phone exists.

As you would have already guessed, the Huawei P9 Lite version will feature toned down specs. Even the body does not look as premium as its elder siblings, featuring a basic metal design with just one camera sensor at the back. So, it looks like to cut down the cost, the company decided to remove the dual camera setup on the lite version. Instead, there will be a standard 13MP rear camera and an 8MP shooter up front. But as you can see in the pictures, you get a fingerprint sensor at the back.

Now, coming to the specs, the Huawei P9 should come with either the same processor as other models in the lineup, namely the Kirin 955 chip or we could see Kirin 950 or even Kirin 935 that powered last year’s P8 inside. The phone will reportedly come with a 5.2-inch display with 1080p resolution. For memory, there will be two versions, one with 2GB RAM and another with 3GB RAM. There will be 16GB of internal storage which can be further expanded via MicroSD. Other features of the P9 Lite include a fingerprint sensor at the back, 3000mAh battery, and 4G LTE support.

As you can see, the Huawei P9 Lite is not really a bad phone, but pricing is something that will define its fate. Since the phone is not yet official, we have no idea about this. So, let’s wait for more details.

The company has confirmed via recent teasers that the phone will come with a dual camera setup. However, that’s not just the marquee feature of the device as we expect pretty powerful hardware inside the device.

We have seen some P9 variants on the AnTuTu benchmarking app before, and now, a new variant of the P9, which is most likely one of the top-end models in the series been spotted on the app. The new model EVA-AL10 will come with the new Kirin 955 chipset and 4GB of RAM. We had heard rumors about Kirin 955 chip with slightly upgraded CPU frequency powering the new flagship, but this is the first time we are seeing the performance of the chip.

Other specs of the device, as revealed by AnTuTu are 64GB internal storage, 1080p screen resolution and dual 13MP rear cameras. Up front, there will be an 8MP selfie camera. As for software, the phone will be running on the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow version.

With these specs on board, the Huawei P9 managed to post a score of around 96,000 on AnTuTu. Given that the Kirin 950 could score only around 85K on the same app, the Kirin 955 does look like an upgrade. When directly compared to the newly announced deca-core Helio X25’s performance, its only slightly slower. In the previous benchmark listing, X25 scored around 100,0000.

However, when we compare the score with chips such as Exynos 8890 and Snapdragon 820, Kirin 955 is still a good 30K below their scores. But then, benchmarks only tell part of the story, so we better wait and test out the real life performance of the handset once released.

Stay tuned to gizmochina for more updates in the coming days to the launch.

The P9 models, namely Huawei P9 Standard, Lite, Max and Premium/ Plus have been in the spotlight for the past couple of months. We already know a lot about the upcoming devices, but today, more information have been leaked.

According to the latest information, the Huawei P9 flagship will come with two great features, one being the new Kirin 955 chip, which will be an upgraded version of the Kirin 950. The second will be a pressure sensitive display. Given that Huawei is not new to pressure sensitive (force touch) smartphones, this could very well turn out to be real.

So, apart from the dual camera setup with Leica lens on board, the Huawei P9 will feature a faster processor as well as an innovative display. Revealing more about the screen on the P9, the source said that this could be a “Knuckle Pressure Sensitive Technology”. If you remember, the P8 series smartphones came with an innovative feature called as Knuckle touch, and this could be an upgraded version of the software.

Further, it is said that the Huawei P9 Standard and Plus versions are already in mass production, with grey and gold being the two colors in focus.

As for the other specs, the Huawei P9 is said to come with a 5.2-inch 1080p display, with the standard edition featuring Kirin 950, 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, while the higher-end versions (Plus) coming with Kirin 955, 4GB RAM and 64GB/ 128GB storage options. As for the pricing, you can expect the Lite version to retail around 2888 Yuan ($443) while the most powerful model could retail at around 3498 Yuan ($537).

Given that we are almost into April, expect more information pretty soon.
