Earlier this year, Huawei announced the Huawei Nova 7 series of smartphones such as Nova 7i, Nova 7 SE, Nova 7, and Nova 7 Prov.  In October came the Nova 7 SE 5G Youth as the last member of the Nova 7 series. Last month, the Chinese manufacturer unveiled the Nova 8 SE in Dimensity 720v and Dimensity 800U chipset versions as the successor to the Nova 7 SE. Today, the brand unveiled the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro smartphones. The two Nova 8 models offer users with up to 120Hz refresh rate display, Kirin 985, 64MP quad cameras, 66W charging, and many other exciting features.

Huawei Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro specifications and features

The Huawei Nova 8 and Nova 8 are equipped with 6.57-inch and 6.72-inch OLED panels, respectively. The Nova 8 supports 1080 x 2340 pixel Full HD+ resolution, up to 90Hz refresh rate, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. On the other side, the Nova 8 Pro supports 1236 x 2676 FHD+ resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and 300Hz touch sampling rate. Both phones support a 10-bit color depth, DCI-P3 color gamut and they are equipped with in-screen fingerprint readers. As far as display design is concerned, the Nova 8 has a single punch-hole and Nova 8 Pro has a pill-shaped cutout for dual selfie cameras. Both displays have curved edges. The curvature on the Nova 8 Pro is 80-degree.

The Nova 8 duo ship with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB / 256 GB of internal storage. These phones are preinstalled with EMUI 11 based Android 10 OS and lack support for external storage. The Nova and Nova 8 Pro draw power from the 2.58GHz Kirin 985 chipset. The same chip has been previously used on phones like Nova 7, Honor V30, and Honor X10.

The Huawei Nova 8 smartphone features a glass and polycarbonate chassis that measures 160.12 x 75.1 x 7.64mm and it weighs 169 grams. The handset has a 6.5-inch OLED screen with a centered punch-hole design and curved edges. The screen delivers a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. It is equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Nova 8 has a front camera of 32-megapixel. The unique camera housing on the backside of the device features a 64-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 2-megapixel + 2-megapixel quad-camera system. According to the leak, the Huawei Nova 8 Pro measures 163.3 x 74.1 x 7.85mm and it weighs 184 grams. The device is equipped with a 6.72-inch OLED panel with curved edges. It supports a custom resolution of 2676 x 1236 pixels, a 10-bit color depth, and a 120Hz refresh. The edges of the screen have an 80-degree curvature. The display is integrated with a fingerprint scanner. The Huawei Nova 8 has a 6.5-inch OLED screen with 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate, an in-screen fingerprint reader. Today, the Chinese manufacturer confirmed that it will be available for purchase in the home market from June 18 with a starting price of 2,199 Yuan (~$310).

The Honor Tablet V6 comes in Wi-Fi and 5G editions. The Wi-Fi variant comes in two option such as 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. They are priced at 2,199 Yuan (~$310) and 2,499 Yuan (~$353). The company is pre-orders for the tablet through platforms like Vmall, Tmall, Suning, and others starting from today.

During the pre-sale period, buyers can get the tablet with a discount of 100 Yuan (~$14) to 200 Yuan (~$28). The first sale of the tablet will be carried out on June 18. Customers can avail it silver, green and black colors.

The Honor Tablet V6 5G will go on sale in the coming month. The exact release date will be confirmed at some point later this month. AnTuTu has released the list of best-performing smartphones in flagship and mid-range categories in May 2020 for China. The flagship list is entirely populated by Snapdragon 865 mobile platform and the first phone to lead the pack is OPPO Find X2 Pro with a score of 604,123. The midrange list is led by Dimensity 1000L powered OPPO Reno3 5G. It managed to score 403,607 points.

AnTuTu’s flagship list for the previous month has the OPPO Find X2 in the second position with a score of 600,884. The third place is held by Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro. It has scored 600,264.

The OPPO Ace2, iQOO Neo3, and Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition are placed on the fourth, fifth, and six positions. The remaining phones that made it to the list include iQOO 3, Realme X50 Pro, OnePlus 8 Pro, and Vivo NEX 3S 5G. Surprisingly, there are no Kirin 990 5G powered Huawei and Honor phones in the top 10 list.

Yesterday (15th April 2020), Honor, the Huawei subsidiary, had unveiled the company’s latest mobile processor, the Kirin 985 SoC. The chipset is an octa core processor and is 5G enabled. Now, George Zhao, the President of Honor, has stated that the chipset will be positioned between the flagship Kirin 990 and mid range Kirin 820 chipset, and will be aimed at device priced under 3000 Yuan (roughly 420 US Dollars).

The HiSilicon Kirin 985 5G chipset has been proprietarily developed and is the third 5G ready mobile processor that the company has launched. In an interview, the senior Honor official answered questions regarding its newly launched chip. According to George, the Kirin 985 SoC is meant to act as a bridge and fill the gap between the Kirin 990 and Kirin 820.

Huawei had just announced its latest flagship processor HiSilicon Kirin 985 SoC. It is a 5G processor and will fall between the Kirin 820 5G SoC and Kirin 990 5G. Now, the processor has been put through the AnTuTu benchmarking software and has achieved an impressive score of over 380,000.

The chipset is equipped on the Honor 30 series, including Honor 30, Honor 30 Pro and Honor 30 Pro+. It is an octa core processor with the new Mali-G77 GPU. The Kirin 985 also houses the same dual core NPU, similar to the Kirin 990. Arriving at the performance, the AnTuTu benchmark had managed the highest score of 386,045 points. Notably, this is just slightly higher than the Kirin 820 SoC.

Breaking down the overall score, the CPU of the Kirin 985 scored 122,531 points, while its GPU received 131,623 points. The MEM score arrived in at 69,180 points and finally, the UX score brought in 62,711 points. In simpler terms, this should translate to overall better performance when compared to the Kirin 820. However, the Kirin 820 actually managed to score slightly higher in the CPU department while lagging behind in the rest.

This is surprising since the clock speed of the Kirin 985 is higher than the 820 and is based on the same CPU architecture. Although this may be due to software optimization, as the newly launched processor has yet to receive any specific software update, unlike the latter which has already been available for a while now.

Huawei is rumored to be working on the launch of Huawei Nova 7 series. A recent report had revealed that the Chinese firm may announce it on April 23. However, the company is still mum on the existence of the arrival of Nova 7 lineup. A popular leakster from China has shared a blurry poster of the Nova 7 series. The blurry image manages to reveal the front and rear design of the smartphone.

Past reports have revealed that the Huawei Nova 7 lineup comprises of three devices, namely Nova 7, Nova 7 SE and Nova 7 Pro. All these phones are expected to arrive with 5G support. It is unclear whether the handset shown in the leaked poster is the vanilla Nova 7 or SE or the Pro model.

The poster reveals that the Nova 7 series handset has a rectangle-shaped camera housing on the back. The handset seems to be equipped with an impressive curved screen. There is a pill-shaped dual camera cutout at the top-left corner of the display. It appears that the smartphone will be available in blue and gradient white colors. Lastly, the poster reveals that popular Chinese singer Yi Yangqiaxi (also known as Jackson Yee) endorsing the Nova 7 series.

Honor will be launching the Honor 30 series of smartphones with flagship capabilities on April 15 at 2:30 PM (local time) in China.  The entire specifications of the Honor 30 and Honor 30 Pro smartphones have surfaced through their TENAA appearance. The Weibo post rolled out by the company suggests that design and camera will be the main selling points of the Honor 30 and Honor 30 Pro. The Weibo post also suggests that these phones are also expected to arrive in an attractive new silver color scheme.

One of the color editions of the recently announced Huawei P40 series is Silver Frost. Leaked renders of the silver edition are now doing rounds on Weibo. Hence, there is a possibility that the Honor 30 and 30 Pro may come in a Silver Frost like color.

Between October last year and now, Huawei‘s Hisilicon chip department has released two high-end chipsets. The flagship Kirin 990 SoC which was used on the Mate 30 series and of late the P40 series. The foundry has also unveiled the Kirin 820 premium mid-range chipset that found its way into the Honor 30S first. The Chinese market leader has now revealed that another high-end chipset – Kirin 985 is in the works and it has earlier been tipped to roll out onboard the premium Honor 30.

The Kirin 985 first popped up in the rumour mills as far back as December 2018 and it was speculated to launch with last year’s Huawei P30. One of the rumours tipped that Kirin 985 to launch in the second half of 2019 and another leak hinted that it will be mass-produced by TSMC in Q2 2019. The mass production was later rumoured to commence in Q3 2019. The Kirin 985’s pathway didn’t pan out exactly as the rumours predicted but apparently there is some bit of truth in the rumours. Honor’s Business department vice-president has now confirmed the existence of the Kirin 985. Since it is coming from the Honor end, we may as well conclude the chipset will feature on the Honor 30 first.

In a Weibo post today, the Honor VP shared the latest AI benchmark ranking with the Kirin 985 in the third spot. The chipset has ahead of it, only the Kirin 990 which is in the first spot and the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 in the second spot. The Kirin 985 is raked ahead of notable 5G chipsets like the Kirin 800 chipset in the third spot, the non-5G Kirin 990 variant in fifth while the premium mid-range Dimensity 1000L is at the sixth position in terms of AI prowess.

The Hoor VOP extols the capability of the company’s self-developed Neural Processing Unit (NPU) which is responsible for the impressive performance of the four Huawei chipset on the list, including the Kirin 985.

The screenshot shows the Kirin 985 is far below the Kirin 990 but is apparently a better SoC than the Kirin 820. However, the chipset is an octa-core processor with the same cores as the Kirin 820. It features a single Cortex-A76 core clocked at 2.58GHz and three Cortex-A76 cores with clocking frequencies of 2.4GHz each. There are also four Cortex-A55 cores with lower clock frequency of 1.84GHz. The Kirin 985 is listed as equipped with dual-core DaVinci NPU whereas the Kirn 820 has a single-core DaVinci NPU. Thus, the 985 has a slightly improved performance over the Kirin 820.

The Honor 30 series is expected to be launched on April 15.

The Huawei Nova 7 series is expected to be announced next month. At least three phones are expected – the Nova 7 SE which should be the second phone with the new Kirin 820 5G chipset; the Nova 7; and the Nova 7 Pro with all having support for 5G.

The Nova 7 and Nova 7 Pro should have the Kirin 990 5G chipsets but the latest reports say the Nova 7 may actually come with a different processor – a new chipset to be unveiled soon called the Kirin 985.

Of course, this is not the first time we have heard of the Kirin 985. Prior to the launch of the Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G, it was reported that Huawei was working on a processor called the Kirin 985 and that it would power the P30 series but that didn’t happen. It was then reported that it would launch in the second half of 2019 but that too didn’t happen.

A Chinese blogger posted a few days ago on Weibo that the Kirin 985 (name might be changed) is coming.

Going by previous knowledge of the chipset, it may be built using the 7nm+ EUV lithography process and will be paired with the Balong 5000 modem. With respect to performance, it should be more powerful than the Kirin 820 5G.

Huawei Central reported that the chipset may power the Nova 7 Pro too but seeing as the Nova 6 5G is powered by a Kirin 990 chipset, and the Kirin 985 is not going to be more powerful than it (Kirin 990), it makes no sense to use the Kirin 985 in the Nova 7 Pro.

The rumor mill is now actively spilling information on the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro flagship phones. The Huawei Mate 10 series was made official in October 2017 and the Mate 20 series was announced in October 2018.  Hence, Huawei fans have been expecting that the Mate 30 series may go official in October this year. Citing information from Huawei Consumer Business Software President, Dr. Wang Chenglu, a Russian tech blog has reported that the Mate 30 series will be debuting on Sept. 19.

According to the publication, Chenglu has revealed that the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro will be powered by the Kirin 990 chipset. One of the major features of this new SoC is that it will consume less energy. The Mate 30 series will come preloaded with the latest Android Q OS overlaid with the latest EMUI 10 skin. The publication has claimed that devices will not come preloaded with Google services due to the ongoing conflicts with the US authorities because of the trade ban.

The rumor mill has already leaked that Huawei’s next flagship chipset for mobile devices i.e. Kirin 985 will again be a 7nm product. Probably, the same SoC could be made official as Kirin 990. The SoC is expected to come bundled with a 5G modem. This suggests that the company may sell 5G editions of Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro as well.

While the Mate 30 series may go official on Sept. 19, their 5G editions may come around December. So far, the rumor mill has revealed that the Mate 30 Pro has a massive 6.7-inch display with 90Hz refresh rate. The display will have extremely curved edges and it will feature a wide notch to house the complex sensors of 3D face unlock. The rear shell of the phone may include a triple camera unit with two 40-megapixel sensorsv. The battery of the Mate 30 Pro could be coupled with 55W fast charging. The Mate 30 is expected to arrive with slightly weaker specs than the Pro model.

Recent reports have revealed that the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 Lite will be the first phone from the company to arrive with its Android alternative HarmonyOS. Probably, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro units in China may also feature the new OS from the firm.

If true, Huawei is likely to beat Qualcomm in releasing the world’s first integrated 5G chipset in the market. Qualcomm’s 5G integrated chip is said to release only in the first half of 2020.

The new 5G integrated mobile chipset could likely be featured in the special 5G edition of the Mate 30 series that will launch by the end of the year. Nikkei adds that Huawei has set an aggressive internal goal of selling 10 million 5G smartphones by the end of the year. A majority of these sales should be driven by its first 5G smartphone, the Mate 20 X 5G which is already selling in Europe and will go on sale in August in China. It is worth adding that Huawei had certified four 5G smartphones in China earlier this month. In comparison, other manufacturers have just one commercial 5G smartphone under their belt. Yesterday, some live shots of the Mate 30 Pro had surfaced on Weibo to reveal that it will be featuring a wider notch that could be packed with multiple sensors for Face ID like the predecessor Mate 20 Pro. Fresh images of the screen protectors of the alleged Mate 30 and 30 Pro smartphones have appeared today. The leak reveals that even the Mate 30 phone will be equipped with a wider notch. Soon after Google cut of its Android relationship with Huawei in response to trade ban imposed by the US government, the Chinese firm trademarked HongMeng operating system. A newer report claimed that the company may announce it as early as this month in the home market. The Chinese company has also registered Ark OS moniker. It remains to be seen whether the international versions of Mate 30 series will come preinstalled with Ark OS.

The Kirin 985 chipset is rumored to arrive as the second-generation 7nm chipset from Huawei for its upcoming flagship phones. It will be built with Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) technology. Rumors have it that it will be a 5G-ready chipset with Balong 5000 5G modem onboard. The Kirin 980 SoC was announced at IFA 2018 tech trade show in August last year. The Kirin 985 may also go official through the same tech event in August this year. Some early reports have claimed that there will be a 5G version of Mate 30 Pro.

In the previous month, leaked information had revealed that the Mate 30 series will be equipped with a 6.71-inch OLED screen supplied by BOE. It is not known whether it will be a notch-less screen a punch-hole display. Also, there is no confirmation whether the phone will support 3D face unlock that was introduced on the Mate 20 Pro. However, it will arrive with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

A square-shaped quad camera setup is expected to be present on the rear side of the phone with an LED flash at the center as shown in the render above. It could be equipped with a 4,200mAh battery that may carry support for 55W rapid charging.

Huawei’s chipmaking arm HiSilicon is reportedly planning to go aggressive for the development of 5G mobile chipsets with an integrated modem. It is also planning to make 5G mmWave solutions for smartphones after releasing a new chipset later this year.

As per the reports, Huawei will be releasing its next chipset called the Kirin 985 in the second half of this year. The chipset will support Huawei’s high-end 4G smartphones, and can also come with add-on Balong 5G modem chips to support 5G sub 6GHz smartphones.

The same chipset could be used to power the company’s next flagship smartphone — the Huawei Mate 30 series, which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of this year. The Kirin 985 chipset will be manufactured by TSMC on its 7nm+ node and packaged by ASE Technology Holding and its affiliated Siliconware Precision with FC-PoP technology.

Reports indicate that the company’s new mobile SoC will undergo trial production in the second quarter and based on that, it will go into mass production in the third quarter. Following the footsteps of Qualcomm, the leading company in the mobile chipsets market, Huawei is also going aggressive for the 5G.

It is planning to roll out 5G SoCs integrated with modem chips between late 2019 and early 2020, which are expected to become the mainstream AP solutions for smartphones in the 5G era. The company also plans to tap into the segment of mmWave 5G smartphone AP in early 2020.

To support the transition from 4G to 5G, chipmakers are also rolling out multiple mobile AP versions that can be installed with add-on 4G and 5G modem chips, before launching the chipsets integrating 5G modem chips and mmWave 5G SoCs in 2020.

With such rapid pace development, Qualcomm and Huawei are eyeing to be among the top two suppliers of 5G SoC. On the other hand, Taiwan-based MediaTek is set to release a sub 6GHz 5G chip by the end of this year while Apple is not expected to join the 5G market until 2020.

Huawei has recently launched the P30 and P30 Pro flagship phones. The Chinese firm is expected to announce the Huawei Mate 30 series in October. The Mate 30 Pro will be the company’s most powerful flagship phone as it is expected to be powered by a new chipset. Fresh information on the Mate 30 Pro smartphone have appeared to reveal some of its key specs.

Industry sources have revealed that the Mate 30 Pro will be fueled by 7nm Kirin 985 chipset built by the EVC manufacturing processor. In order to support 5G connectivity, the SoC will include Balong 5000 5G modem. It is speculated that the Mate 30 Pro will be available in 5G and 4G only variants.

The Mate 20 Pro has a 6.39-inch OLED display. However, its successor may arrive with a 6.71-inch OLED screen supplied by BOE. The display is expected to be curved from all four sides, but its other details like screen resolution are not available yet. It remains to be seen whether Huawei opts for punch-hole or notch-less or some other display design for Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones.

The predecessor phone carries support for 3D face unlock. There is no information on whether the advanced facial recognition feature will be available on the Mate 30 Pro. The smartphone is expected to arrive with an in-display fingerprint reader.

The Mate 30 Pro is expected to arrive with a quad camera setup. The configurations of the four lenses are not known yet. However, whats known about it is that it will be equipped with a 3D ToF sensor. The design of the camera setup will be identical to Mate 20 Pro. In other words, a square shaped camera setup will be available on the Mate 30 Pro that will include four camera sensors and an LED flash in the center.

The Mate 30 Pro may arrive with a 4,200mAh battery which seems a bit disappointing considering the fact that it will be a large-sized smartphone. It is expected to carry support for 55W SuperCharge technology which is also available on the Mate X foldable smartphone. The Mate 30 Pro will also carry support for 10W reverse wireless charging. There is no information on the pricing of the smartphone yet.

Huawei had introduced the Kirin 980 SoC as the world’s 7nm SoC at the IFA 2018 tech trade show in August 2018. The SoC was first seen under the hood of Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro flagship smartphones. Since then, it has been used by the company to power other flagship phone such as Honor Magic 2, Honor V20, Huawei P30 and P30 Pro. The Chinese manufacturer is now reportedly working on an improved version of Kirin 980 SoC. A Weibo user has claimed that the company will be debuting 7nm Kirin 985 later this year and it will be powering the upcoming Mate 30 series of flagship phones.

Previous reports have reveled that the Kirin 985 chipset will be manufactured through Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) technology. It is expected to deliver 10 to 20 percent better performance than the Kirin 980 SoC. TSMC is expected to produce the Kirin 985 through its N7 process. Apple A13 chip that will be powering the upcoming iPhones will be built by TSMC’s more advanced N7 Pro process.

The mass production of the Kirin 985 is now rumored to begin in the third quarter of the year, and it has now reportedly entered the designing stage. There is no confirmation on whether it will be a 5G-ready SoC. Probably, the Chinese firm will debut the Kirin 985 in August this year.

As far as Mate 30 series is concerned, there is no information available on the specs of the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones. A report from the previous month had revealed that the company has already started testing the Mate 30 handset. After Huawei Mate 20 X smartphone and Mate X foldable phone, the P30 Pro is rumored to be the next 5G-ready phone from the company. Last year, Huawei’s Hisilicon managed to beat everyone else to release the world’s first 7nm SoC, the Kirin 980. It looks like the company will continue the trend of releasing its new-gen chip before others, with its Kirin 985 slated to go into mass production in Q2 2019.

The report from Commerical Times (via Digitimes) states that TSMC is readying its 7nm EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography) process technology, dubbed as the N7+, for the mass production of Hisilicon’s new generation Kirin 985. Despite the issues associated with developing EUV, it will make the manufacturing process at 7nm, cheaper and faster.

Soon after kicking off volume production of Kirin 985, TSMC will start manufacturing Apple’s A13 chipsets by the end of Q2 2019. The Cupertino giant’s chipset will be based on a slightly different technology, dubbed as the N7 Pro. All we know about the ‘Pro’ process is that it’s an enhanced version of the N7+.

This news is in line with a previous report which mentioned 7nm EUV process for Kirin 985. Since the new tech will speed up the manufacturing process of the chipset, Huawei should be able to ship more smartphones with this flagship processor inside. Earlier this week, Huawei had launched the P30 and P30 Pro smartphones to replace the P20 and P20 Pro smartphones from last year. An official information that was shared during the company’s press briefing in Malaysia has confirmed that it has started working on the Mate 30 series.

A company official confirmed that the testing process of Huawei Mate 30 has already begun. He also revealed that Mate 30 series will be made official in September or October. The Mate 30 family will include members like Mate 30 Lite, Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro. These devices will be arriving to succeed the Mate 20 Lite, Mate 20 and Mate 20 Prov phones that were unveiled in October last year.

The Huawei P30 series have arrived as a major rival for the Galaxy S10 lineup by Samsung. The South Korean company has also introduced the 5G-ready smartphone called Galaxy S10 5G. The Chinese manufacturer has confirmed that it won’t be releasing a 5G version of P30 or P30 Pro. The reason behind it is that the company feels that the timing is not right to launch a 5G now since more countries are expected to support in the coming year.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu has recently stated that the company is considering releasing a 5G edition of the upcoming Mate series phone. While the Mate 30 Lite could be a mid-range phone with Kirin 710 or a similar processor under its hood, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro are rumored to be powered by the forthcoming Kirin 985 chipset. The SoC is said to be manufactured through 7nm EUV process. The new chipset will not only deliver faster processing speeds, but it may take along Balong 5000 5G modem.

In January, a patent filing of the company that featured a smartphone design with massive cutout for the rear-mounted cameras. The patent images of the phone have given birth to rumors that the upcoming Mate 30 Pro may come with the same design. The huge cutout on the rear indicates that the device could be equipped with a penta-lens setup. An interesting thing about this advanced phone was that it includes a round-shaped cutout on its top edge. While some may feel that it the cutout could be for the 3.5mm audio jack, there is a possibility that it may belong to an IR blaster. Rumors are also claiming that the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro could be equipped with punch-hole displays.

Huawei, the leading smartphone vendor in China, launched its flagship Kirin 980 chipset a few months ago which competes against other flagship processors — Snapdragon 855 and Exynos 9820. Now, it seems that the company is working on another flagship chipset.

According to the reports, the upcoming chipset from Huawei — HiliSilicon Kirin 985 will be launched in the second half of this year. As per the report from a Taiwan-based portal, the self-sufficiency rate of Kirin processors for this year will be increased to 60 percent.

The company is expected to significantly increase the production of the chipset in the second half of this year, which is based on TSMC‘s 7nm process. The China-based manufacturer is still relying on MediaTek and Qualcomm chipsets for a few of its mid-range devices but the company is now reducing its reliance on other manufacturers going forward.

Thus, the Chinese company is expected to accelerate the production of its low-end chipsets as well, along with the high-end chipsets. The upcoming Huawei Kirin 985 chipset will be based on 7nm+ EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Light) technology. As said, the chipset will be released in the second half of the year as the successor of the Kirin 980.

Huawei‘s most powerful mobile processor is the Kirin 980. It first appeared in the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro and we expect it to be the flagship chipset powering Huawei and Honor branded flagship phones for the next nine months or so. But a new info hints Huawei may release a successor earlier than usual.

According to Mishal Rahman, the editor at XDA Developers, Huawei’s next chipset will be called Kirin 985. Seeing the name of the processor and comparing it to older Huawei mobile SoCs with names that end with “5”, there is a high probability the Kirin 985 is a slightly upgraded version of the Kirin 980.

The last time Huawei released a slightly upgraded version of its main chipset was in 2016 and that was the Kirin 955 which powered the Huawei P9. Its predecessor, the Kirin 950 was released back in 2015 and appeared in the Mate 8. The major difference between both is that the Kirin 955 is clocked at 2.5GHz while the Kirin 950 is clocked at 2.3GHz. Every other thing down to the GPU is the same in both processors.

So if the Kirin 985 is the next chipset coming from Huawei, it may only offer a slight improvement over the Kirin 980. Mishal Rahman says he has no other info about the SoC but going by Huawei’s previous tradition, you shouldn’t expect much when the Kirin 985 launches. Also, if it is coming, we expect it to power the Huawei P30 series which is scheduled to launch in March.
