Huawei has recently been expanding on its smart IoT offerings. Examples of this are the recent FreeBuds 3 truly wireless earbuds and the Watch GT 2, which are both powered by its custom built Kirin A1 chipset. Now, the custom HiSilicon processor will reportedly also be found in headphones and a smart eyewear from Huawei.

According to a new report, the Chinese tech giant is planning to launch more products with its latest Kirin A1 chipset in the near future. This includes headphones, a neckband, smart eyewear, and a smart speaker as well. In an interview, Zach Yang,  Wearables and Audio Product Marketing Director of Huawei, revealed that the company will be launching Kirin A1 powered products in 2020 and 2021.

The HiSilicon chipset was custom made specifically for wearables products and was unveiled back at IFA 2019. Since then, Huawei has launched products like the FreeBuds 3 and Watch GT 2 which sport the new chipset. Unfortunately, the senior executive did not reveal any specific dates or a launch roadmap/timeline as to when exactly we can expect the headphones or smart eye wear to launch.

Although, he did mention that the plan is to launch soon, possibly by the year end or next year. Huawei and its subsidiary Honor have been wanting to expand on their IoT product lineup, especially in India. Thus, we can expect more announcements to arrive in the coming weeks regarding this. Huawei, the Chinese giant which is the world’s leading telecom equipment manufacturer, is also one of the leading smartphone brands. It is dominating the Chinese smartphone market while globally, it is the second largest smartphone company, just behind South Korean giant Samsung.

While the company has seen good growth in the smartphone side of its business, it was aiming for the top position and dethroning Samsung, but is now seems like a distant dream given that the brand has been put on the Entity List by the United States, effectively banning the company.

However, there’s another segment where the company is witnessing a tremendous growth — Wearables. Huawei’s Richard Yu has recently revealed that the company’s wearable products continues to maintain growth of 100 percent for two consecutive years.

He claimed that the company’s growth in this product category for the year 2019 is more than 170 percent, which is believes is the result of customers around the world liking the experience Huawei’s wearable devices provide.

Also, it must be noted that the wearable devices are also getting diversified and are not limited to smartwatches and fitness trackers. Currently, the true-wireless earbuds are getting a lot of traction in the market and Huawei recently launched its latest TWS earbuds, dubbed as Huawei FreeBuds 3.

Huawei has also development and launched its own chipset for wearable devices — Huawei HiSilicon Kirin A1, which the company is using in several of its products. The FreeBuds 3 are also powered by this same chipset and so is the Huawei Watch GT2.

The Chinese giant has also started investing more in the wearables given that they are an essential part of the larger smart living strategy. The company has also planned to use the Kirin A1 chipset in several different type of products, including variant of earphones, smart glasses, smartwatches, among others.

Despite being just a couple months old, new avatars of the Honor MagicWatch 2 have just been unveiled. Collaborating with multiple artists, Honor has come up with a range of funky designs as part of the Limited Edition package. The MagicWatch 2 Limited Edition is adorned with colorful bezels, bands, and themes and has been designed by “a number of rising stars from the world of art and graphic design” according to Honor’s official statement.

Honor unveiled the limited edition designs at a special event held in London on January 21. Some of the artists in question are Giovanni Ozzola, George Greaves, Wag DongLing, and Jacky Tsai. Inspired by what seems like jazzy swatches at first glance, the designs draw inspiration from the world of photographers, sculptors, graphics designers, and illustrators. Behind the façade is the same old MagicWatch 2 that Honor launched back in November 2019.

The Honor MagicWatch 2 Limited Edition features built-in themes matching its unique style, and is part of the company’s aggressive push into the smart-wearables category. A move to further establish an independent identity away from parent company Huawei.

There is a limited number of watch faces/themes available on the Huawei Health app right now. However, starting February 2020 85 unique designs will be available for download. What is interesting to note is the designs were selected from over 1,400 entries that came in as part of Honor’s Global Watch Face Design contest.

Although the quirky designs are interesting, the MagicWatch 2 Limited Edition gets the exact same features as the standard variant. The flashy watch offers up to two weeks of battery backup, which is quite similar to what is seen on the Huawei Watch GT 2, which is designed using the same platform. Details regarding pricing and availability are currently unavailable, but you could buy the standard variant for £160 (~$209) for the 46mm variant and £150 (~$196) for the 42mm option.

Honor had launched the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro smartphones in China in July. In November, it unveiled the Honor Magic Watch 2 in China with a price tag of 1,399 Yuan (~$199; ~Rs. 14,000). Soon after the Honor 9X series in the home market, the rumor mill speculated that the Honor 9X will be made available in India. However, its arrival seems to have been delayed. A fresh report on 91mobiles reveals that the Chinese manufacturer will unveil the Honor 9X in January 2020. It will be also announcing the Magic Watch 2 smartwatch alongside the smartphone.

Honor 9X and Honor Magic Watch 2 Specifications

The Honor 9X that will be arriving in India will not be the exact same Kirin 810 powered Honor 9X device that debuted in China. However, the country could be receiving the international edition of the smartphone. The Honor 9X for India will be featuring a 6.59-inch IPS LCD display with notch-less display. The screen supports full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone will draw power from the older Kirin 710F chipset. It could be coming with up to 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of native storage. A microSD card slot will be available onboard for more storage.

For shooting selfies, it will be equipped with a pop-up selfie camera of 16-megapixel. The triple camera system on its rear will feature a 48-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel superwide lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The phone will draw power from a 4,000mAh battery that will only support 10W charging. A fingerprint scanner could be available on the backside of the device. The EMUI based Android 9 Pie OS runs on the device. The Honor 9X heading to India is expected to arrive with support for Google Mobile Services (GMS).

The Honor Magic Watch 2 had launched in two variants like 42mm model with 1.2-inch screen and 46mm model with 1.33-inch display in China. The Kirin A1 chipset fuels the device. The 5ATM water-resistant Magic Watch supports 15 fitness tracking modes. The device offers other features like Always-On Display, heart rate moniker and sleep tracking. At present, there is no word on the pricing of the Honor 9X and Honor Magic Watch 2 for India.

Reports of the arrival of Huawei Watch GT2 in India have been doing the rounds of the internet for quite some time now. But no official word around a tentative launch date was available so far. Huawei India just updated its official website with the ‘Notify Me’ button for the Watch GT2 earlier today. The link opens a pop-up window leading to the launch page on Amazon and Flipkart.

It is hardly surprising that Huawei plans to launch the Huawei Watch GT2 here in India, considering the first-generation Watch GT is among the best-selling smartwatches in the country. The Huawei Watch GT2 is available in two variants, 42 mm and 46 mm. While the 42 mm variant features a 1.2-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels. The 46 mm variant sports a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels. The GT2 draws power from a Kirin A1 chipset, which is the world’s first dual-mode BT/BLE Bluetooth 5.1 SoC with Huawei’s patented BT-UHD protocol, capable of transmission speeds of up to 6.5MBps. It is based on Huawei’s in-house Isochronous Dual Channel transmission technology for low power consumption and low latency and 365 MHz audio processing for quick and stable Bluetooth connectivity along with accurate video and audio synchronization. The smartwatch is waterproof up to 50 meters.

Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.1 BR/BLE/EDR, GPS, and features a range of sensors including optical heart rate sensor, geomagnetic sensor, gyroscopic sensor, accelerometer sensor, ambient light sensor,  and air pressure sensor. The Watch GT2 has dedicated power and function buttons. The device draws power from a 455 mAh battery and runs on Google’s Wear OS-based Lite OS. Huawei recently unveiled its Kirin A1 chipset for wearable devices and now as per the reports, the company is all set to release the same chipset in the Indian market later this week. As per the press invite sent out by the company, it wants to “create a new ecosystem in India”.

The Chinese giant has not yet confirmed what exactly it plans to launch in the Indian market but several reports point out that it is going to be the new Kirin A1 chipset. If this turns out to be true, then we expect the company to soon launch its wearable products such as FreeBuds 3 and Watch GT 2 in the Indian market.

The Huawei Kirin A1 chipset was first announced in September this year during IFA 2019 in Berlin. The chipset rivals Apple’s H1 processor that powers the company’s popular true wireless earphones — AirPods.

The Kirin A1 is touted by the company as the world’s first headphone-centric processor to support Bluetooth 5.1. It also offers low latency and ultra high-definition audio output, among other things.

Measuring 4.3 x 4.4 mm, the chipset is integrated with Bluetooth processing unit, audio processing unit, ultra-low-power application processor and independent efficient power management unit. It can output Bluetooth ultra high definition audio (BT-UHD) up to 2.3Mbps for optimal sound quality. It can also provide the fastest Bluetooth transmission speed in real-time, up to 6.5Mbps.

Also, each earbud of the FreeBuds 3 can be paired to the phone on a separate channel. It comes in a circular charging case that can extend battery life from 4 hours to 20 hours.

On the other hand, the Huawei Watch GT 2 comes with 1.39-inch display with a 3D glass uni-surface. The features onboard the smartwatch includes underwater heart rate monitoring, Bluetooth call from a distance of up to 150m. Huawei has announced a new chipset especially for the wearables — Huawei Kirin A1. The chipset is touted to be the world’s first Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.1 wearable chip. The first batch of devices powered by this processor includes Huawei FreeBuds 3 and Huawei Watch GT2.

As said, the Chinese company claims that the Kirin A1 is the first wearable chip that supports both wireless audio devices and smartwatches and is certified by Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.1 standards.

Huawei announced a new version of its wireless earbuds today at IFA 2019. The Freebuds 3 not only has a new design but also comes with a brand new chipset called the Kirin A1.

The Kirin A1 is an ultra-low-power processor that brings advanced Bluetooth and powerful audio. It is the world’s first Bluetooth 5.1 and Bluetooth 5.1 LE wearable chipset.

Freebuds 3

The Freebuds 3 true wireless stereo headset features a new design Huawei calls Dolphin Bionic inspired by a dolphin’s vocal cavity. The case is also different, circular like a perfectly round pebble with a glossy finish.

With the new Kirin A1 chip, Huawei promises low latency and low power consumption as the earbuds use what is called an isochronous dual channel Bluetooth connection. Each earbud is paired to the phone on a separate channel rather than one earbud being the master while the other is the slave in some earbuds.

Huawei is obsessed with titles and it claims the Freebuds 3 is the world’s first earbuds with open-fit active noise cancellation with up to 15-decibel ambient noise reduction. The bone sensor makes a comeback and will work with the Mic Duct for noise cancellation and a crystal clear conversation when making calls.

It also has a latency of 190ms which makes it perfect for gaming, and the noise cancellation is adjustable using the companion app.

The Freebuds 3 boasts a 4-hour battery life which can be extended to 20 hours with the charging case. The case is said to support both fast wired and wireless charging speeds.

Huawei didn’t announce a price but says it will be available next month in Europe and cost less than the $199 Airpods. It will come in black and white color variants.
