While Huawei is known for its smartphones, the company also offers products in the PC market outside of laptops. The Chinese tech giant recently launched a new workstation desktop that features its proprietary Kunpeng processor, which was made to rival other Intel Xeon based models.

For those unaware, Huawei has been offering workstation high performance processors for desktops through its Kunpeng 920 series since 2018. These powerhouses were built with productivity in mind and were developed by the company’s subsidiary HiSilicon, who also designed their signature Kirin mobile processors as well.

However, despite being capable, these chips had yet to receive proper support and optimization for different software a professional might require. So, Huawei recently started offering Kunpeng based workstation PCs to developers. Now, the Huawei Qingyun W510 has been launched with the HiSilicon Kunpeng 920-3211K SoC that features 24 cores that run at 2.6GHz, which are based on HiSilicon’s proprietary Armv8.2-compatible Taishan v110 cores.

Furthermore, the workstation is equipped with AMD‘s Radeon 520 GPU and 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. Huawei is also bundling the new workstation with a 23.8 inch FHD monitor. Through this offering, the company is targetting the Chinese government, as well as local enterprises, which is the reason why runs the latest Deepin OS and not Microsoft’s Windows. At the moment, it is only available for developers, but the company will soon make the push to the commercial market.

Notably, the Kunpeng 920 series chip was originally meant for servers and supported an octa-channel DDR4-2933 memory, two 100GbE controllers, 40 PCIe 4.0 lanes with CCIX support, 16 SAS 3.0 ports, two SATA 3.0 ports, and four USB 3.0 connectors. Although, this particular variant was designed as a workstation, so had its 32 cores cut down, to offer a similar performance to an Intel Core i9-9900K. Unfortunately, these Kunpeng chips were manufactured by TSMC (on its 7nm process), so it remains to be seen how the company will source these chips after recent US sanctions.

According to a popular Chinese tipster, Huawei is set to enter PC industry with products powered by the company’s own HiSilicon Kunpeng processors. The most interesting thing is they will run the newly announced HamrmonyOS.

As of now, the Chinese tech giant’s proprietary OS codenamed HongMeng is only found on a few Honor as well as Huawei-branded smart TVs. But with the release of HarmonyOS 2.0, we might see it on PCs.

The tipster alleged these PCs to be powered by Kunpeng processors. He also revealed several Chinese provinces, cities, and regions are cooperating with the homegrown company to build its PC industry supply chain.

Huawei unveiled HarmonyOS at Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) 2019. At the event, the company also shared a roadmap, which mentioned the version 2.0 to be released in 2020 with support for PC, cars, and smart wearables.

So it is all happening as per the plan disclosed by the firm last year. We can expect the announcement of HarmonyOS 2.0 to take place at Huawei Developer Conference 2020 later this year.

Further, Kunpeng processors are not new as the company is already supplying them to its enterprise customers for computing solutions. In 2019, Huawei also announced its first desktop motherboard based on Kunpeng 920 processor with support for all necessary hardware. However, this motherboard is not available for consumers yet. 

The upcoming Huawei PCs will be either powered by this motherboard or the company will announce something new at HDC 2020.

Now, Huawei and Tencent Games have announced a strategic partnership at the Huawei Developer Conference 2020 that was held online amid coronavirus pandemic. Hou Jinlong, President of Huawei Cloud and Computing BG, says that Kunpeng ecology is an important opportunity for the gaming industry.

Both the companies plan to make several joint innovations and it is said that Huawei will also establish a joint innovation laboratory with Tencent Games. Commenting on the development, Ma Xiaoyi, senior vice president of Tencent Group said: “We are very glad to have reached a strategic cooperation with Huawei and set up a joint innovation laboratory. We will advance the cooperation in mobile cloud games, game engines and other aspects with the advantages of both parties.”

He further adds that for the cloud gaming, the company has created Tencent Cloud Game GameMatrix platform and says that the company will make full use of Huawei Kunpeng processors with powerful computing to build industry-leading, high quality and low-cost mobile cloud gaming solutions.

Huawei executive Hou Jinlong believes that the next ten years will be the golden decade of innovation in computing architecture and the diversified computing architecture innovation requires participation of more developer. At the conference, the company announced that Huawei will invest $200 million to promote the development of Kunpeng.
