In the region, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> took the throne with the highest market share and a notable growth year on year.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-446165 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/21-vs-20-mkt-share-latam.png?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="712" height="354" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/21-vs-20-mkt-share-latam.png 712w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/21-vs-20-mkt-share-latam-300x149.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/21-vs-20-mkt-share-latam-324x160.png 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/21-vs-20-mkt-share-latam-696x346.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px" /></p>
<p>According to <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/latam-smartphone-shipments-grow-13-4-yoy-2021-despite-supply-constraints/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a>, the LATAM smartphone market saw an overall growth of 13.4 percent last year over 2020. Although, this figure was still 9 percent lower than that of 2019. As per Principal Analyst Tina Lu, &#8220;Most LATAM countries saw YoY growth driven by Chinese brands entering the region and increasing competition. But Brazil’s TAM decreased YoY. With local manufacturing/assembly representing more than 80% of its smartphone volume, Brazil felt the full impact of component shortages.”</p>
<p>During 2021, most brands saw growth in sales volume, but some companies saw higher  growths. Samsung lead the market in 2021 and even in the fourth quarter as well. It was the leader in a number of nations, except, Argentina and Mexico. The South Korean tech giant managed to see a strong performance in Latin America despite suffering from supply shortages. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Motorola</a> came second, leading in Argentina and Mexico, and seeing an impressive 39 percent growth year on year as well.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-446166 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Q4-20-vs-21-share-latam-768x374.png?x10805" alt="Samsung" width="768" height="374" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Q4-20-vs-21-share-latam-768x374.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Q4-20-vs-21-share-latam-768x374-300x146.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Q4-20-vs-21-share-latam-768x374-533x261.png 533w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Q4-20-vs-21-share-latam-768x374-696x339.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, LG&#8217;s departure from the smartphone market also left a void in the market, especially in the entry level segment. So brands competed intensely to take advantage of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LG</a> exiting the segment. With more and more Chinese brands enter the region, the competition is also rising, so it remains to be seen how they shake up the market in the coming quarters.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/xiaomi-rises-third-biggest-player-latam-market-q4-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Counterpoint Research</em></a> report, the drop in shipments was the least in Brazil and Peru, while the Chinese tech giant managed to achieve the top three position for the first time in the region. As per Counterpoint&#8217;s Principal Analyst Tina Lu, &#8220;Smartphone shipments in 2020 dropped 19.6%. The market suffered from a supply shortage in Q1 2020, especially in Brazil, where local manufacturers also experienced parts shortages. From the end of March and through May, most of the regional demand was halted due to broad lockdowns in most LATAM countries. The market started to recover slowly after June.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lu further added that the region saw a surge in online promotion events post lockdown, with events like Cyber Week and Black Friday. These events boosted sales during the fourth quarter of last year. Samsung was the most aggressive in promoting its online channels while also expanding its presence in the region. The South Korean tech giant also held the top spot in the market during the final quarter, with a market share of 36.9 percent. Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/motorola/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Motorola</a> and Xiaomi arrived second and third with 18.4 percent and 6.7 percent respectively.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-314746 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Mi-Logo.jpg?x10805" alt="Xiaomi" width="746" height="472" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Mi-Logo.jpg 746w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Mi-Logo-300x190.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Mi-Logo-696x440.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Mi-Logo-664x420.jpg 664w" sizes="(max-width: 746px) 100vw, 746px" /></p>
<p>However, in terms of annual market standings, Xiaomi only arrived fourth with just a 6.2 percent market share. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> took the third spot in the annual rankings but likely fell due to the impacts of <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/18/tsmc-halts-new-huawei-orders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">US sanctions on its supply chain</a> during the fourth quarter. In other words, Xiaomi might just surpass Huawei this year in the annual rankings.</p>
