Lava launched the Blaze 5G smartphone in October 2022, initially equipped with 4GB of RAM. Subsequently, the brand decided to introduce two additional RAM variants: 6GB and 8GB. According to a recent post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the device has commenced receiving its November security update.

This update aims to enhance the overall security of the device and address many security vulnerabilities identified in the previous release. These issues affected the Framework, Media Framework, System, and parts like the kernel and processor-based components. For those interested in the device’s features, refer to the specifications outlined below.

The Lava Blaze 5G boasts a 6.52-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels and a 90Hz refresh rate. Powering the device is a MediaTek MT6833 Dimensity 700 Octa-core processor, accompanied by three RAM options: 4GB, 6GB, and 8GB. The smartphone offers 128GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card.

Other specifications include a 50MP (wide) + 2MP (macro) rear camera setup and an 8MP front camera. The Lava Blaze 5G operates on a 5000 mAh Li-Ion non-removable battery and features a power button that doubles as a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Back in October, Lava launched the Blaze 5G smartphone (review) in India. Later in February, the device got a 6GB RAM variant. Now, the brand has launched an 8GB RAM option for the Lava Blaze 5G which can now be bought in India.

In India, the Lava Blaze 5G with 8GB RAM is priced at Rs 12,999 and is available to buy via Amazon. However, there’s a special offer allowing customers to purchase it for just Rs 12,499 for a limited time. Moreover, buyers can avail an extra discount of up to Rs 1,000 when using SBI credit cards or opting for EMI transactions, bringing the effective price down to as low as Rs 11,499.

Lava Blaze 5G specs

The Lava Blaze 5G comes with a 6.5-inch LCD display that has an HD+ resolution and a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. It features a small waterdrop notch at the top. The power button on the side also acts as a fingerprint scanner for added security.

On the back, you’ll find a rectangular camera module with a 50MP main sensor, a depth lens, and a macro unit for versatile photography. For selfies, there’s an 8MP front-facing camera.

Under the hood, the Lava Blaze 5G is powered by a Dimensity 700 processor, which supports eight 5G bands for faster connectivity. In addition to the 8GB RAM model, the phone is also available in 4GB and 6GB RAM options, and it also has 3GB of virtual RAM to enhance performance. The phone offers 128GB of internal storage with the option to expand it further using a dedicated microSD card slot. It comes with Android 12 OS pre-installed.

The Lava Blaze 5G is now available in 6GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage. With 3GB virtual RAM technology, the total RAM goes to 9GB for a smoother performance. The new variant comes in Glass Blue and Glass Green colours. It carries an introductory price tag of Rs 11,499 when it goes on sale for first time on February 15th. After that it will cost Rs 11,999. 

The Lava Blaze 5G features a 6.5-inch LCD display bearing an HD+ resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate and a waterdrop notch. The power button doubles up as a fingerprint scanner. Back in November 2022, the Indian smartphone and electronics manufacturer Lava launched the Lava Blaze 5G. The device offers good performance and a decent spec sheet in the sub-Rs 11,000 segment.

Currently, the Lava Blaze 5G comes with 4GB RAM onboard. Fans of the brand have been asking the company to launch a 6GB RAM variant of the device, which is apparently what they will be getting very soon.

Lava has posted a teaser on Twitter confirming that the 6GB RAM variant of the Lava Blaze 5G will be launching soon. This is sure to give the device a bump in performance and multitasking. However, with the increased RAM capacity, the price tag is also expected to go up a little bit. The Blaze 5G currently sells for Rs 10,999 for the 4GB RAM & 128GB storage model. The 6GB model will likely cross the Rs 12,000 mark. Spec-wise, nothing will be changing other than the amount of RAM.

Lava Blaze 5G recently debuted as India’s most affordable 5G phone. The device faces competition from the likes of the POCO M4 5G, iQOO Z6 Lite 5G, Redmi 11 Prime 5G, and Samsun Galaxy M13 5G, which also offer 5G capabilities at a lower price. If price is the only factor to consider when choosing a winner among these, the Blaze 5G is an easy winner since it launched at an introductory price of Rs 9,999 (~$123). It is currently available for Rs 10,999 (~$135). Let’s dive into the review to see whether its other features are good enough to beat its competitors.

Lava Blaze 5G – What’s in the box?

As can be seen above, the Lava Blaze 5G’s retail box includes the following items:

Design and Display

I am impressed by the build of the Lava Blaze 5G. The glass back of the phone, which has a matte finish, gives it a premium look. The back panel feels smooth and does not attract fingerprint smudges. The inclusion of the glass and a big battery makes it weigh over 200 grams. The Blaze 5G has flat edges and rounded corners. Its edges are made of plastic, but the paintjob makes it look like metal. The top edge of the device is barren, while the bottom offers a 3.5mm audio jack, a microphone, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille. The device has a hybrid SIM slot and a volume rocker on the left side. The power button on the right edge is integrated with a fingerprint scanner.

The slightly raised camera module has a squarish black portion, which houses two cameras and an LED flash. Below is the “50MP AI Camera” text and the third camera. It would have been better if the cameras sported a symmetrical design.

The Lava Blaze 5G has a waterdrop notch display with a large bottom bezel. The screen is quite bright and offers good viewing angles. While it supports an HD+ resolution, the image clarity is such that it feels like it is a Full HD display. The contents of the screen are readable under sunlight only if it is set at the highest brightness setting. In Settings, users get access to display-related features like Adaptive Brightness, Night Light, Refresh Rate, among other settings. There is no word on what sort of display protection is available on the device.

Performance and Battery Life

• Dimensity 700

The Dimensity 700-powered Blaze 5G offers snappy performance right out of the box. The D700 chip, which is MediaTek’s entry-level 5G-ready chip, can be seen on some of the costlier devices like the Samsung Galaxy M13, POCO M4 5G, and Redmi 11 Prime 5G. The Blaze 5G is only available in a single 4GB + 128GB configuration. Apart from the big internal storage, the device also offers support for a microSD card for more storage. The SIM tray of the phone features one slot for the primary SIM, and the second slot can either support a second SIM or a microSD card.

The Blaze 5G supports n1, n3, n5, n8, n28, n41, n77, and n78 5G bands. Since 5G is not available at my place, I couldn’t check the 5G connectivity.

For gamers, the Lava Blaze 5G comes with the Game Space app, which provides numerous features like game acceleration, a game sidebar, display optimization, performance enhancement, background call, palm rejection, and so on. On Geekbench, the device scored 505 and 1598 in the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench 5. On AnTuTu, the device scored 303,877. On BGMI, the device supports Smooth + Ultra with 40fps. Here are the screenshots of the performance benchmarks.

The company itself mentions in the official listing that it takes around 2:50 hours to fully charge the 5,000mAh battery of the Blaze 5G. While the phone supports up to 15W charging, Lava has bundled a 12W charger in its retail box. When other brands are considering removing chargers from the retail packages of their mid-range phones, Lava has gone ahead and provided a charger with two USB ports. As far as charging is concerned, it took around 3:02 hours for me to achieve a full charge. It can easily last up to two days after being charged. 

Clean Android OS Experience with Little Customization

• Near stock Android 12 OS
• YouTube with background play
• YouTube Music with background play
• FM radio
• Up to 3GB RAM expansion  

The Lava Blaze 5G runs on a near-stock version of the Android 12 OS. One of the screenshots shared here showcases all the apps available on the device. You do not see any bloatware, right? Additional apps from Lava include FM radio (not wireless), Game Space, and the Lava Guide app (user manual).

The #ProudlyIndian brand boasts that the Blaze 5G offers an industry-first feature wherein YouTube works in the background. As it is known, background play is only available with a YouTube Premium subscription. Yes, the YouTube and YouTube Music apps work in the background. However, both apps do not skip ads. Also, it allows users to play up to 2K videos on YouTube. The call recording function does not let the other person know that the call is being recorded. 

The device also has other nifty features, such as App Lock, Android Auto, and multiple user profiles. The slightly customised Settings app has the Intelligence Assistance section, where users can find additional settings as shown in the screenshots above. The RAM expansion features allow users to convert up to 3 GB of storage space into virtual RAM. Lastly, there is Dura Speed in the Settings app, which helps boost the foreground app by restricting background apps.

Lava has not said anything about how many Android OS upgrades will be available for Blaze 5G users. It seems that the device may receive at least the Android 13 OS update in 2023.  

Photography and Other Features

The camera app offers photography features, such as photo, video, portrait mode, beauty mode, GIF, UHD, Pro mode, panorama, slow motion, timelapse, macro, and intelligent scanning, which can be used for scanning barcodes and QR codes. The phone impresses the photography department in both bright and low-light scenarios. It manages to shoot decent photos with sufficient lighting indoors. When compared to the regular mode, the night mode is able to take pictures with more detail. It captures mediocre-quality macro shots.

I could not really understand the requirement for the VGA camera (third camera) on the device.

When shooting a video with the rear camera, the phone focuses on the subject while blurring the background. I noticed some lag while shooting 2K videos. EIS does a good job of capturing stabilized videos. In low-light conditions, the phone captures shaky FHD and 2K videos even with EIS enabled. However, even in dim light, the phone tries to capture videos with some amount of detail. It can record 720p slow-motion videos at 15 frames per second.

The 8-megapixel front camera is good enough for selfies and video calls. It can shoot 30fps Full HD videos. Features like AI and HDR are not available while using the front camera. Users do get a couple of filters to enhance the selfie experience. It can also capture selfies with a good amount of background blur. However, sometimes edge detection does not work well. Overall, Lava Blaze 5G users will love using it for shooting photos and videos.

Lava Blaze 5G has a single speaker, which produces a decent sound output. I did not face any issues accessing features like face unlock, fingerprint scanner, voice calling, and Wi-Fi / LTE connectivity. Lava tries to stand out from competitors in the customer service department. It offers Service@Home doorstep services, which offer software and minor repairs to all customers of the Blaze, Yuva, and Storm series of smartphones. It promises service within 24 hours.

Verdict

To summarize, the Lava Blaze 5G is an impressive phone for Rs 10,999 (~$139). Even though it costs Rs 1,000 more, the device outperforms its rival in some areas. Lava is the only Indian smartphone brand to launch 5G phones in the Indian market. Because of this, many Indians who don’t want to buy Chinese smartphones will be drawn to this one. The Blaze 5G can easily become one of the bestselling phones in its price segment. I would definitely recommend it to someone who wants to buy a 5G phone for the first time. Many of the customers will purchase it as their first 5G phone, and I believe they won’t be disappointed.

It is worth noting that there could be other silent releases, especially in China. Because Single’s Day sale is arriving next week, which is considered one of the biggest shopping seasons.

The Lava Blaze 5G was showcased at the Indian Mobile Congress 2022 in early October. At the conference, the brand disclosed the key specs of the handset, except for its pricing and availability.

Recently, the company confirmed that it will reveal the price of the phone on November 7 (Monday). It may go on sale on the same or a few days later.

Talking about specifications, the Lava Blaze 5G comes with a 6.5-inch HD+ 90Hz display (LCD), MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC, Android 12, 50MP triple camera, 8MP selfie camera, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, MicroSD card slot, and 5,000mAh battery.

Realme 10

The Realme 10 is scheduled to launch on November 9. It will be announced at an event that will begin at 2 PM GMT+8. The conference will be live-streamed on YouTube.

Realme 10 will be a 4G-only budget smartphone powered by a MediaTek Helio G99 chipset. It will arrive with a 6.4-inch FHD+ 90Hz AMOLED display, 50MP + 2MP dual camera setup, 16MP selfie camera, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Android 12, 5,000mAh battery, and 33W fast charging support.

There’s a chance that more premium models of the Realme 10 series, like the one with a curved display could debut in China next week. But unfortunately, we don’t have official confirmation from the company regarding it.

Last month, Lava Mobiles showcased the Lava Blaze 5G at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2022. While the entire specifications of the device are already known, the company has not confirmed its price. A recent report claimed that the Blaze 5G would be available for purchase starting Nov. 3, but that did not come true. A new tweet by the brand suggests that the company will confirm its price on Nov. 7.

The official teaser does not say anything else about the Blaze 5G. It appears that the device will arrive as the most affordable 5G phone, which indicates that it could be priced between Rs 10,000 (~$121) and Rs 13,000 (~$157). From the official pictures of the phone, it looks like it will come in blue and green. The device will be available for purchase through Amazon India.

Under the hood, the Blaze 5G features the Dimensity 700 chipset. 4 GB of RAM, and 3 GB of virtual RAM. For additional storage, it will come equipped with a microSD card slot. The device houses a 5,000mAh battery. However, there is no information on the fast-charging capabilities of the device.

There is a 50-megapixel triple camera unit on the backside of the Lava Blaze 5G. On the front, it has an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The device has a side-facing fingerprint scanner.

Chinese smartphone OEMs have already launched multiple 5G phones in India. As far as Indian brands are concerned, Lava is the company that has launched 5G phones in the country. Last year, the brand announced the Dimensity 810-powered Lava AGNI 5G, and now it is gearing up to confirm the price of its second 5G phone, the Lava Blaze 5G.

The Lava Blaze 5G is equipped with a processor called the Dimensity 700 that supports eight 5G bands. It has a 128GB internal storage capacity with support for a dedicated microSD card slot, 4GB of RAM, 3GB of virtual RAM, and these features. The smartphone comes pre-installed with Android 12 OS. A battery with a capacity of 5,000mAh powers the Lava Blaze 5G.

The smartphone has dual SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack for connectivity. The smartphone will be available in colors like blue and green.

Last month Lava launched the Blaze Pro smartphone. Now the homegrown brand at the ongoing Indian Mobile Congress has announced Blaze 5G smartphone. It is an upgraded variant of the Lava Blaze that debuted in July this year. According to the company, the latest offering is the most affordable 5G smartphone in India. It is also the second 5G compatible phone from Lava after the AGNI 5G that was launched last year. 

The Lava Blaze 5G features a 6.5-inch LCD display offering an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate and a waterdrop notch. There is a side-mounted fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button. The back panel has a rectangular camera module that houses a 50MP main sensor, a depth lens, and a macro unit. Up front, the smartphone features an 8MP selfie snapper. 

Under the hood, the Lava Blaze 5G is powered by a Dimensity 700 processor which brings support for eight 5G bands. It packs 4GB RAM along with 3GB virtual RAM and 128GB of internal storage with support for a dedicated microSD card slot. The smartphone ships with Android 12 OS out of the box. The Lava Blaze 5G is backed by a 5,000mAh battery unit. 

Connectivity options on the device include dual SIM, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Lava is yet to confirm the price of the Blaze 5G. However, the company said that it will be priced around Rs 10,000 and will be available for pre-order around Diwali this month. The smartphone will be made available in colours like blue and green.
