According to a DigiTimes report, the demand for smartphone displays is currently the largest application segment for small to mid sized LCD panels. Furthermore, this segment is expected to recover in 2021. The report states that the global handset display shipments will grow by a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 3.1 percent from 2020 to 2025, with smartphone applications rising at a higher CAGR of 5.9 percent.

Editor’s Pick: Android 10 update may arrive for the Nokia 5.1 today; Android 11 roadmap may follow shortly after

Although, this also includes AMOLED displays, which are expected to reach 40 percent of the total handset display panel segment by 2023. This would result in the LCD smartphone display’s CAGR fall by 0.8 percent during the five year period, as per estimation. For those unaware, AMOLED panels have been growing in popularity with each passing year.

However, the rise of IoT applications within the industry for automotive, smart speakers, and household appliances will have the related IoT applications aso boost the sales of small to mid sized LCD panels starting from 2022. The report estimates that these displays for IoT applications will grow by a CAGR of 6.1 percent between 2020 to 2025.

At the moment, the acquisition is said to be in the final stages. Notably, the company held a sizeable 21.1 percent of the global large sized panel capacity in the market, which would be further boosted by the recent acquisitions. As of 2021, it is expected that BOE will hold more than a quarter of the world’s large-sized panel capacity, coming in at 28 percent.

This acquisition will not only raise BOE’s global leading position but will also increase its influence. Through the new acquisitions, the company also gets access to the VA (Vertical Alignment) LCD technology and Oxide TFT technology, which will boost its business in LCD TV, Notebook PC, and LCD Monitor market. The Gen 8.6 fab will fill up BOE’s lacking 50 inch and 70 inch capacities as well, which would bolster its TV market.

BOE has already invested heavily in the IPS R&D, and with the added buyout of TN and VA technology, it has access to more supplementing technology for its LCD business. Additionally, analysts have also mentioned that the acquisition will likely cause a ripple in the display supply chain as well. Furthermore, if BOE upgrades the acquired fabs to produce additional curved VA or IPS panels, then the company can expect to see greater values in returns in the longer run.

According to a recent report by the Photonics Industry Technology Development Association (PIDA), worldwide purchases of OLED panels have increase. The association which is a nonprofit organization gathering technology and market analysis worldwide for Taiwanese optoelectronic industries, also projected that the market share in high-end televisions is expected to reach 68% in 2020.

This is an indication that OLED panels are gradually replacing all other types of display panels on modern television display. A report by South Korea-based UBI Resear reveals that last year alone, international vendors shipped approximately 260 million OLED panels estimated to be worth $11.7 billion USD. That figure is expected to peak at 370 million units by the end of this year, 2016 thus taking the industry’s value to $16. billion. That figure could rise to 1.25 billion units valued at $61.4 billion by 2020.

PIDA also highlighted the fact that three notable advancements in OLED displays, namely Micro LEDs, Quantum Dot LEDs and printing displays (flexible OLED panels) are currently being used by leading international vendors along side OLEDs. All three are recent technologies but are gradually finding their way into devices. LG is reported to have started supplying flexible OLEDs panels while Micro LED could be used by Apple in its iPhones in the near future.

(JDI) yesterday announced the development of a new LCD display which it calls “Full Active” LCD Display (XO) which features ultra-slim design bezels on all four sides of the screen. The new “Full Active” display has found its first introduction in a 5.5-inch Full HD LCD display for smartphone devices.

The new display type was manufactured by adopting a new high-density wiring schematics and with the use of new processing and module assembly technologies. These all combine to create a slim display which requires less bezels, since the control units are small. The current range of LCD panels usually feature larger bezels at the top or bottom which houses the electronic and lighting control units.

JDI claims the newly designed LCD module structure will allow the size of a smartphone to be as slim as the display size and this could launch a whole new design pattern in smartphones. Already plans are underway to commence mass production of the display by the end of March 2017, so we could be seeing smartphones sporting this new display technology as early as next year. Apart from smartphones, JDI hopes to develop LCDs for various display sporting smart gadgets with this new technology.

JDI is a four-year-old company formed in 2012 through the consolidation of the display panel businesses of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba. The company has grown to become a leading global manufacturer of advanced small and medium sized LTPS LCD panels. JDI’s displays can be found in smartphones, tablets, automotive electronics, digital cameras, medical equipment and other electronic devices.

The company has struggled in recent times due to the proliferation of LCD manufacturers in China and the shift to OLED displays spearheaded by Samsung’s AMOLED panels which seem to achieve better resolutions than LCDs. But with this recent technology, JDI could just reclaim the technological edge it has over other smaller LCD manufacturers. Also, it remains to be seen if this can halt the steady migration towards OLED displays.
