According to a DigiTimes report, local news agencies have revealed that the local government is reportedly aiming to develop LCD panel production in India. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will lay out investment incentive plans in six months that will facilitate the building of local panel production supply chains, based on the MoUs it received from potential local and overseas investors.

Through this investment, India would be capable of supporting about three to four large scale LCD panel investment projects that will have a budget of about 20 billion US Dollars. This figure was said to be announced by the ministry’s secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney in an online conference. Furthermore, the reports added that the nation is also preparing to establish 6G lines to roll out panels for mobile device applications and 8.5G lines for other applications as well.

At the moment, the annual demand for LCD panels in India has reached 5.4 billion US Dollars. This figure is further expected to grow and to reach 18.9 billion US Dollars in 2025, as per data compiled by the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA). So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.

According to TheElec report, the factory is being turned away from LCD panels used in iPhones to an automobile display panel site. The South Korean tech giant has halted the iPhone LCD production on its AP3 line at Gumi back in the third quarter of last year, and has even stopped making panels for other smartphones as well by the fourth quarter of 2020. For those unaware, the LCD line for iPhones has been low in terms of profitability for LG Display.

Editor’s Pick: [Update: Official] Snapdragon 870 5G official details leaked; OnePlus, OPPO, Xiaomi and more will launch phones powered by it

This holds especially true now after the Cupertino based giant’s latest iPhone lineup has switched to OLED (organic light emitting diode) panels recently. Thus, the sale of OLED panel sporting iPhones is also expected to surpass that of the LCD panel models this year. At the moment, the Apple iPhone SE 2020, which uses an LCD panel, will be using LCD panels made by JDI and Sharp, which was previously attempted and failed by LG Display.

The company’s AP3 line will now focus on producing automobile display panels that will produce low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT). LTPS TFT is a better alternative to the amorphous silicon (a-Si) TFT panels that are used by LG Display, which the company plans on downscaling due to rivals like BOE from China and AUO from Taiwan. These LTPS TFT panels have become increasingly popular in new car models that are launching in recent times.

In other words, the aforementioned funds secured by the company will be used to secure additional shares of Wuhan BOE Optoelectronics, its LCD factory that produces display panels over 32 inches.

Furthermore, BOE had also previously stated that its Wuhan factory will begin to run at full capacity in the first half of 2021. Notably, the factory is the company’s second after its Gen 10.5 CD plant that is situated in Anhui. The factory in Wuhan began operations back in 2019 and the company had planned an expansion in 2020, which got delayed due to the pandemic. During this time, the production had also halted temporarily. Both the Wuhan and Anhui factories have a production capacity of 120,000 substrates per month.

Additionally, the expanded production will also raise the dominance of BOE and CSOT in the LCD market. Back in 2020, BOE had bought Gen 8.5, and 8.6 LCD factories while CSOT is aiming on purchasing the Suzhou LCD plant of Samsung Display. The company has also told investors that its LCD panel supply will be tight in the first quarter of this year. For those unaware, the prices of LCD display panels have risen since the second half of 2020 and is still rising, as Samsung and LG downscale their respective production.

According to TheElec report, the company is expected to face the delay due to the shortages of LCD TV panels in the market, with customers requesting TCL to extend LCD TV panel production at the Suzhou factory, as per sources close to the matter. Furthermore, the display maker is also facing delays in its acquisition of the factory itself as the South Korean government has yet to offers its approval on this deal at the moment.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G sees record breaking sales worth 200 crores INR ($27 million) during the first sale in India

Currently, TCL aims at further narrowing the gap in large sized panels with the current world leader, BOE. In the TV panel market, the firm has a market share within the early 10 percent, while BOE has a market share in the late 10 percent as well. However, when it comes to IT panels that are used in notebooks and tablets, TCL only has a market share of 2 to 3 percent, in comparison to BOE’s notable 30 percent. Thus, through the Suzhou plant, the company aims on raising its market share in IT Panel.

Notably, in the current market, IT panels are much more profitable in comparison to TV panels. IT panel prices are expected to continue to rise in the first half of this year, while TV panel prices are estimated to stagnate during the same period. Although, with Samsung and LG downscaling their LCD production, a shortage of LCD panels has affected various industries. For those unaware, TCL is buying Samsung Display’s Suzhou LCD plant for 1.08 billion US Dollars.

A report from Digitimes says China will soon outrun everyone else in the Global LCD panel production capacity.

Digitimes’ report says China will soon hold 70% of Global LCD panels production capacity. This is a huge 10% jump from the current 60% says the report citing industry sources. The report adds that China’s BOE Technology and China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) were the frontrunners in 2020. Companies like Innolux, Chongqing HKC, Samsung Display, LG Display. And AU Optronics (AUO) are behind them on the list.

Furthermore, the production of LCD will reportedly take the center stage more in China next year. This is after the acquisition of new fabs by BOE, and CSOT. If we recall, BOE acquired two fabs– 8.5G, and 8.6G from CEC-Panda LCD Technology as the latter suffered heavy loss. The move, which is to strengthen its already dominant LCD technology portfolio, will likely make it hold 28% of the World’s Large-sized panel capacity.

On the other hand, CSOT bought an 8.5 fab from Samsung Display as the company is withdrawing its LCD segment from China as a whole. That said, BOE has a combined production capacity of 12.71 million SqKms compared to CSOT’s 8.58 million Sqkms. Having said that, both of them were the only ones out of six sitting in Top two for the LCD-panel supplier’s list and witnessing growth in H1 2020.

Accordingly, the TV market also witnesses a boom in Global TV shipments with an improvement of 12% YoY inQ3 2020 from 2019. For North America(NA), the growth rate is about 20% YoY between January-August 2020. Demand for edutainment systems across the globe during the pandemic is the main reason for the fight back. Samsung tops the overall shipment of TVs globally and LG, TCL, HiSense, and Xiaomi complete the list.

Among them, TCL has the most interesting growth of 29% QoQ. And a whopping 57% YoY increase, shipping 7.33 million units totally in NA.
