The competition in the consumer electronics industry is fierce. Tech giants like Samsung, Oppo, Apple, Huawei, Lenovo, and LG are all vying for market share with a wide range of products. Research firms like Omdia help us to understand the latest trends in the industry. Their most recent study of the LCD TV panel market found that Samsung is the largest buyer, but Chinese firms are not far behind. Here are the details…

Samsung is biggest LCD TV panel buyer, but Chinese firms are not far behind

New evidence suggests a noteworthy trend in the TV panel market: Chinese brands are making substantial gains in the LCD TV panel market. According to a recent report released by prominent market research firm Omdia, Chinese electronics companies have achieved significant growth in Q1 2023.

TCL and Hisense, two Chinese brands, have taken the lead in LCD TV panel purchases, with TCL buying 12.4 million panels and Hisense closely following with 11.2 million. This change in the market landscape has unsettled the long-standing champion of this sector, Samsung, which came third, purchasing 15.6 million panels.

Several factors have contributed to the increased demand for LCD TV panels in Q1 2023. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, for one, has heightened the need for home entertainment solutions. Additionally, the persistent chip shortage is forcing TV manufacturers to pivot towards LCD panels as OLED production faces significant challenges.

The rising prominence of Chinese brands in the LCD TV panel market poses a challenge for Samsung, a brand renowned globally for its quality electronics, especially TVs. However, this change also presents a golden opportunity. As long as Samsung continues to innovate, maintaining the superior quality of their products and offering them at competitive prices, they can retain their dominant position in the global TV market.

The price of LCD panels has been increasing for more than a year. As a result, televisions got expensive starting in early 2021. Thankfully, we can finally expect the price to go down as per a report by Omdia.

According to the research firm, the price of LCD TV panels has started declining from Q3 2021. This trend is forecasted to continue in the second half of 2021.

The dip in panel price will be driven by the competition among the television manufacturers, the widening gap in profitability between Chinese and South Korean television manufacturers, and strong bargaining power. Since the supply chain has now become hard to predict, OEMs need competitive strategies to make use of the situation.

If all goes well, companies will stop hiking the price of their TVs. As of now, all we can do is hope for the best. The results will probably start appearing in the last quarter of 2021.

While it has officially extended the production for LCD panels, the company said that the length would depend on the market conditions and profitability.

Samsung had been making LCD panels in South Korea as well as China. But earlier this year, in August, the company sold a majority stake in its Suzhou LCD production unit to TCL Technology Group as the company shifted its focus towards the production of LED panels and the next-generation QD panels.

According to the report from TrendForce, due to the work-from-home or stay-at-home trend sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic this year, there has been a 30 percent increase in global panel demand in Q3 2020.

That is why the ban on some Chinese companies from using US technology was hard felt. A few years back, most of the LCD panels in use by Chinese manufacturers in TVs, monitors, and other large-screen products were procured from Japan and South Korea.

But in recent times, domestic companies like BOE have been able to overtake manufacturers from Japan and Korea to ship the highest volume globally. China’s display manufacturers have predicted that this year’s domestic panel production capacity will historically account for around 55% of the global panel shipments.

This was made known at the 2020 Chongqing Micro-LED Industry Innovation Forum and Konka Semiconductor Display Technology and Product Launch Conference was held yesterday in China. The statement is credited to Liang Xinqing LCD Branch Secretary of the China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufacturers Association.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi 9 Power launched in India with 6,000mAh battery, Snapdragon 662, and 48MP quad-camera

Liang Xinqing also disclosed that the global display device output value in the first three quarters of 2020 was US$82.723 billion, an increase of 8.6% year-on-year. The shipment area was 178 million square meters, an increase of 5.7% year-on-year.

The data for the first three quarters of 2020 in Mainland China shows that the TFT-LCD shipment area is 97.01 million square meters, which accounts for 54.5% of the global market and the output value is $26.685 billion US dollars.

However, in terms of AMOLED panels, lots of efforts are still needed to gain more market shares. In the first three quarters, the AMOLED shipment area was 1.09 million square meters, accounting for 0.6% of the global market, and the output value was US$2.709 billion.

At the same time, Liang Xinqing also mentioned domestic shortcomings. Currently, Japan has mastered the upstream core technology, South Korea’s OLED is the world leader. He added that China was currently gaining an advantage in terms of production capacity, but the technology structure is single and the entire industry chain is still to make significant headway.

Reportedly, the cause for the price hike across the board is due to the rise in the cost of display panels used in its TVs.

Reportedly, Xiaomi will be raising the price of its entire lineup of TVs. The blogger reported that the price of LCD panels has risen significantly in recent times. Thus, one can expect a rise in Xiaomi TV, which will be announced by the company on 28th August 2020 through their official offline and online stores. The blogger also added that the mainstream Xiaomi TV models that are currently available in the market, will have their prices raised, with hikes ranging from 100 to 300 Yuan (roughly 15 to 45 US Dollars).

While the original report from the blogger did break the news, ZNDS network confirmed it through their exclusive sources. According to their sources, Xiaomi is indeed looking to adjust the prices of their TV lineup from Friday onwards, although, the company will be announcing the price increase at a later date.

A separate report from an analytical firm revealed that prices for display panels have risen in August, with 55 inch and 32 inch panels rising by 10 percent, while 50 inch and 65 inch panels having prices rise by 8 to 10 percent as well. Unfortunately, this is still not confirmed officially, so we will have to wait and see if Xiaomi actually ends up raising the price or not, and whether this decision is also reflected in overseas markets like India.

Weeks after the phone’s launch, details about its components have surfaced online.

According to a report coming from Korea, Japan-based JDI has been picked by Apple to be the sole supplier of display panels for the new iPhone SE, at least for the initial batch. The report further adds that Sharp will join the list of suppliers at a later stage.

For those who are unaware, JDI and Sharp were the suppliers of the 4-inch display panel used in the earlier iPhone SE model. This time, for the iPhone SE 2020 model, LG Display was in the race to supply displays and also underwent the final round of testing.

The development for Japan Display Incorporated (JDI) comes at a time when the company is struggling and Apple reportedly pumped-in the much-needed cash of around $200 million last year in a bid to prevent the display maker from shutting down.

It is said that the company is now looking to sell off assents, including a production facility in Hakusan area and Apple will be buying a part of that facility. Apple’s decision to aware display contract for the new iPhone SE to JDI could be a part of its plan to help the Japanese company.

For the upcoming 5G iPhone 12, the in-display fingerprint sensor is said to be vital to have some of the modern and trendy features.

The company has heavily invested in three OLED production lines in China and will manufacture the sixth generation of AMOLED displays with a plan to soon reach a full production capacity of manufacturing 48,000 units every month.

Coming to the Apple iPhone 12, the phone will be powered by Apple A14 chipset manufactured by TSMC using 5nm node and will come with support for 5G. However, there are reports claiming that the company could delay the launch of iPhone 12 series as it faces supply issues because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
