Lenovo Teases New Y Series Mini LED Monitor

Lenovo has recently launched the ThinkVision M14d Mobile monitor for professionals who like to be on the move. The 2K monitor is extremely slim and light making it the perfect solution for your portable small screen needs.

The ThinkVision M14d is the successor of the ThinkVision M14t (touch) and the ThinkVision M14. But this time around, it comes with a 16:10 aspect ratio as most business and professional-oriented laptops have been making a move towards the 16:10 aspect ratio.

Talking about the specs of the monitor, it comes with a 14-inch 2K (2240x1400p) anti-glare IPS WLED-backlit panel. The display has a 60Hz refresh rate and a 6ms response time. It also covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut, has a peak brightness of 300nits, and offers a 1500:1 contrast ratio. The monitor gets “natural low blue light” as a special feature making it easier on the eyes through long hours of screentime.

It weighs 0.6 kg (1.3 lbs), making it relatively easy to lung around next to a laptop. Users can also mount it via the two included 100 mm screw-holes.

Due to its compact size, the Lenovo ThinkVision M14d external monitor doesn’t have any ports other than the two USB Type-C ports that can double up as DP1.4 ports. However, the USB-C port can be used to deliver up to 65 W of power to a connected device. The monitor requires an external power source to power it as it does not have a built battery.

Lenovo has announced that the ThinkVision M14d will cost $299 and will be available for purchase in July 2022.

COVID-19 and the resultant global lockdown may have had a deep impact, but the PC monitor market has continued to grow well over a year later.

The latest figures from International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker are out (via: IDC) and show that worldwide shipments were just over 35 million units in the second quarter of 2021. This is an increase of 11.2% compared to the numbers from the same quarter in 2020 when COVID-19 lockdowns were in full force.

The demand has been stronger than ever this year. However, supply was constrained by various challenges that affected not only the PC monitor production but much of the electronics industry at large.

Components such as ICs that go into display panels remained limited. This, combined with rising transportation costs and logistical challenges, led to price hikes. Buyers fulfilling urgent demand and hedging against expected shortages further contributed to the hike.

Company Highlights

The share of commercial shipments saw a drop in Q2 2021 compared to a year ago, losing out to growing demand from home users. Much of this was driven by gaming monitors alone. Another reason for the drop is that the commercial segment was bought more thanks to the lifting of COVID curbs which led to a recovery in office occupancy.

But perhaps, it is the low-tier vendors ranking below the top 5 PC monitor companies, that benefitted the most from the growth in demand from home users. Such brands captured almost 36% of the market share compared to their 32.2% share from a year ago.

As clear from the above table, Dell Technologies continues to top the 2021 worldwide PC monitor shipments list with over 7,549,000 million units sold in Q2 2021. Lenovo follows with 4,164,000 units. However, the latter has seen a significantly higher YoY growth, or almost double to be precise – where Dell has seen an 18.6% increase in shipments in Q2 2021 when compared to Q2 2021, Lenovo has seen a growth of 35.2%.

Looking ahead, IDC expects to see stabilization in monitor component pricing as demand wears off and component shortages ease out a bit in the second half of this year.

Shipments are predicted to peak at a little over 147 million units, the highest level since 2012. Following that, volumes are expected to decline in the coming years, eventually stabilizing at 139 million by 2025.

“The second quarter capped five consecutive quarters of positive year-on-year growth, four quarters of which were growth in the double digits. Such momentum has never been seen in the history of our monitor coverage,” said Jay Chou, research manager for IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker.

“However, we believe the market will soon reach an inflection point. Demand will begin to cool in the latter half of 2021, with small declines in 2022 thru 2024. Nonetheless, long-term assumptions have already shifted for the better compared to pre-COVID times as location-agnostic modes of work/study become more popular, thus enlarging the installed base,” he added.

Last week, Lenovo announced a couple of gaming monitors called Lenovo G27q-20 and Lenovo G27-20. Both of them are identical to each other with some minor differences and these dissimilarities are directly proportional to the purchase decision. Let us take a look at the specs, features, price, and availability of these two monitors.

Lenovo G27q-20 / G27-20 Specifications & Features

As we mentioned in the beginning, the two monitors are similar in most ways. Hence, let’s talk about the differences between them first.

First and foremost, the G27q-20 supports up to 165Hz refresh rate, whereas the G27-20 is limited to 144Hz. Further, the former features a 1440p (2560 X 1440 pixels) 10-bit display panel and therefore, it supports up to 1.07 billion colors and 109 PPI. On the other hand, the latter only supports only up to 16.7 million colors with 82 PPI as it comes with an 8-bit panel 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels).

Due to the differences in refresh rate and panel type, the power consumption is different in the two models, which is obvious. Additionally, the higher-spec’d model is also slightly heavier, larger in dimensions, and feature HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 1.4. However, both of them come with the same DP 1.4 and 3.5mm audio output ports.

With the dissimilarities out of the way, let us discuss the common specs between them. Starting with the size, the two monitors sport a 27-inch IPS LCD panel with a WLED backlight and 16:9 aspect ratio. The display is further covered by anti-glare coating and has a 178° viewing angle

Interestingly, despite the differences in resolution and refresh rate, both the monitors have the exact same peak brightness of 400 cd/m2, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 3M:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 99% sRGB color gamut, and up to 1ms response time.

They also support HDR decoding, AMD FreeSync Premium, and are also TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light / Flicker Free-certified. Additionally, the monitors also come with a Kensington lock slot and support VESA mount as well as cable management.

Lenovo has launched a new monitor in the market that offers a 21.5-inch display. The highlight of this new product is that it comes equipped with a Full HD camera and a built-in microphone. It is priced at 1,499 yuan which is roughly about $220 and can be purchased through JD.com.
