According to the latest report from Taiwan, Lenovo has decided to enter into the handset manufacturing business as a part of the company’s new restructuring plan.

This is not very surprising since the company hasn’t been in its best form in the past couple of quarters. Lenovo posted a loss of nearly $300 million in the second quarter of 2015. Further, it is said that the Lenovo Mobile’s shipments have actually started to decline recently. As a result, the company has been making some strategic changes internally to get back to profitability.

Fierce competition from rival companies like Xiaomi, LeTV, Meizu as well as Huawei has affected the profitability of Lenovo Mobile significantly. However, with this strategic move, Lenovo may even offer its factories for manufacturing smartphones from rival companies such as above.

After reporting its Q2 earnings, Lenovo had said that the company will no longer just focus on increasing its market share, instead it will pay more attention to quality, supply chain efficiency and profitability.

The report from Digitimes adds that the main reason for the company to enter the OEM handset business was to improve its capacity utilization rate also known as operating rate. The earlier factories were not up to the mark, and hence, the company decided to enter the industry to improve the rate.

With Lenovo’s entry into OEM handset manufacturing, business of companies like Compal Electronics, FIH Mobile and Foxconn could be affected.

Lenovo jumped on the 64-bit smartphone bandwagon with the Vibe Z2 which will be launched in October. Other companies have also lined up 64-bit handsets like HTC’s Desire 510 which was announced last week. The Vibe Z2 and Vibe X2 were launched by Lenovo at the IFA trade show. The current phone has a large 5.5-inch screen and is 7 mm thick. The Vibe Z2 is thus Lenovo’s thinnest phone. It is powered by a quad core 64-bit Snapdragon processor and 2 GB RAM. It also has 32 GB of internal memory. These features are topped up with a 13 mega pixel rear camera and an 8 mega pixel front camera which is specialised to click selfies. The front camera is programmed to click selfies and also has smile detection and auto timer among other features.

Vibe Z2 would be priced around $429 and will be first ship to China in September and to the rest of the world in October. Whether or not they will sell this phone in the USA is still to be disclosed.

Lenovo has also announced another new smartphone, the Vibe X2. This phone has a 5 inch screen and a 32 bit processor. It is 7.27 mm thick and has a 13 mega pixel rear camera and an 8 mega pixel front camera like the Vibe Z2. This handset too is LTE compatible and comes at a price lower than that of the Vibe Z2 ($399).

Lenovo is currently world’s fourth largest smartphone manufacturer and will soon complete its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, thus making it the world’s third largest manufacturer. Though Lenovo does not do business in the USA but has good market in other countries.

In the document, this phone is said to use a quad-core processor with a speed of 1.2GHz. Most likely a quad core processor is used MediaTek MT6589 processor. No information is given about the RAM capacity, but the possibility of this phone has 1GB of RAM.

Since Lenovo released the first wave of smart phones in China 18 months ago, the income of its smartphones accounted for 10.8% of global revenue, and this part of the revenue is growing at the rate of more than 70%.

Lenovo is working with India to the top of the large operators Reliance Communications cooperation, the introduction of smart phones in India. Lenovo stride has a small, Android phone, Gujarat and Karnataka test them priced at $120 USD to $520 USD.

Reported that before December 2012, the Indian market sales of smartphones reached 16 million, 80% of which is dominated by the two brands of Samsung and Nokia. Lenovo IdeaPhone K900 smartphone that does not rely on a quad core processor. This one smart phone uses Intel’s dual-core processor with a speed of 2GHz.
