Currently, Lenovo is producing 100,000 mobile units in a month, but company is planning to increase it to 1 million units per month. Speaking to PTI, Lenovo group president, Edward Chang opened up about the Lenovo’s future plans in India and said, “We make mobile phones in India at our partner’s factory. At present we have a production capacity of 100,000 per month which we plan to increase in the range of 500,000 to 1 million units per month by the end of 2019.”

The increase in volume does not include Motorola devices, a Lenovo owned brand. Recently, Lenovo has partnered with Flipkart to sell its devices, estimating the sale of 6 to 7 million units in India.

“We have partnered exclusively with Flipkart because the share of online and offline market will be equal in India by 2020. This means it is 60-70 million units business opportunity every year,” Chang said.

Yesterday, Lenovo has launched three new mid-level devices at an event. Among the newly launched devices, Lenovo K9 is made available for Rs 8999 and Lenovo A5 in two models for Rs 5999 and Rs 6999.

Lenovo also opened up about its plans to enter the smart devices market with products designed for Internet-of-Things. It will push IoT among smartphones, PC and other smart wearable devices. Additionally, Lenovo has said to launch a new flagship device by the first quarter of 2019 in India.

However, when it came to the smartphone market, this Chinese tech giant is struggling. Recently, it was said that the company’s acquisition of Motorola from Google wasn’t exactly successful and even outside of Motorola, the company’s own smartphone lineup hasn’t been able to make its mark in the industry.

We have seen some great phones from the company, but since it is mainly operating in the low-end and mid-range segment, the search for sales hasn’t exactly yeiled expected results or improved its image as a smartphone maker. But the company seems to be invested in this industry and it is said that in the next couple of years, it will make sure that it does well in one of the most important markets in the world, the Chinese smartphone market.

We have seen the Chinese market dominated by the likes of OPPO, Xiaomi, and Huawei, which means it’s not going to be easy for Lenovo to aggressively expand its market share in the region. What usually helps a company improve its share is aggressive pricing and looks like Lenovo is going to opt for the cost pricing strategy to take on competitors in China.

According to the Chinese media CNR, Lenovo Mobile Business Group President, Cheng Xudong said recently that the company plans to give up the race for profits by pricing its products at cost. He beleives that phones from the ZUK lineup as well as Moto lineup will help the company increase its presence in the Chinese market. And if it manages to make its mark in the super-competitive Chinese market, then Lenovo could easily take on competitors in the global market.

No wonder Lenovo priced the ZUK Z2 cheaper than the Xiaomi Mi5 at 1799 Yuan ($283)! But there’s no guarantee that a no profit strategy is going to work in the long run. We will have to wait and see how Lenovo performs in the coming years.

What are your thoughts? Can ZUK and Moto phones make Lenovo one of the top smartphone makers in China and in the world?

Lenovo is looking forward to expand its global presence by launching its smartphones in 10 different countries of Europe. If we talk about Lenovo in Europe, then it is already selling its smartphones in two countries which are Czech Republic and Romania.

According to the expansion plans of Lenovo, it would launch its handsets in other European countries in 2 phases. Phase 1 includes countries of Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece and Turkey. Lenovo is expecting to start selling their phone in these countries by the end of September or by the start of October 2014. A launch date has not yet been confirmed. In the second phase, Lenovo will cover Poland, Croatia and Slovenia where it plans to roll out its phones by November or December 2014.

Ivan Bozev, Lenovo’s regional general manager (South-East Europe) said that the company’s goal is to acquire a minimum of five percent mobile market share in a period of six months. And by the end of 1 year, Lenovo is confidently eyeing a double digit figure in terms of market share. The company has already partnered with retails and telecommunication giants in these countries to sell their phones.

Lenovo sees the European continent as a good market for their phones. Let’s see what response Lenovo will get, when it launches its phones in these European countries.
