LG’s smartphone division may not be as famous as it used to be but they sure deliver good smartphones with excellent overall performance. The brand ventured into dual-screen technology with the launch of the G9 ThinQ. The V50 ThinQ and V60 ThinQ were also launched in 2019 and 2020 respectively packing a dual-screen design.

The technology behind the Dual-screen case used of the phones has now been revealed. Turns out LG didn’t directly manufacture the Dual Screen case but they brought in a firm called Keyssa to develop a sort of “wireless connector” to get the secondary display to connect and work in unison with the primary one. Keyssa calls its technology “Kiss Connectivity.”

In an interview with DisplayDaily, Keyssa Marketing VP Steve Venuti talked about the technology in devices like the LG V50 ThinQ. He spoke of the company’s wireless connector technology and how it enables two screens to “connect” without actually having wires running back and forth.

“Keyssa designs, markets, and sells what we call a wireless connector. Wireless, in that it uses RF to transmit and receive data between two devices. But, a connector in that it is designed for near-field, device-to-device applications where a mechanical connector may not be the most effective method for connecting two devices,” Venuti said in the interview.

Essentially, the technology is designed to work in a way that’s similar to a wire, but in situations where a cable wouldn’t be possible. The products offered by Keyssa are designed to emulate the characteristics and properties of wire without the physical connection. Even though it’s wireless, there are no needed firmware updates, so it does work as a wire.

The technology used for linking the secondary display to the rest of the phone is called mmWave, which — just like mmWave 5G — has a line of sight limitation. That ends up not being a disadvantage for Keyssa, as the company needed a near-field, device-to-device connection to accomplish its goals.

Rather than announce a foldable device with a flexible display like Samsung, LG is going with dual-displays via an accessory that you can attach to the phone. Last month at IFA 2019, LG announced the LG G8X ThinQ which comes with the new and improved LG Dual Screen accessory. However, LG didn’t reveal a release date and neither did it mention the price at the launch.

Earlier today, LG announced that the LG G8X ThinQ will be available in the US beginning November 1 for just $699.99. That isn’t a bad price if we are being honest.

The LG G8 ThinQ can be used in a variety of ways with its LG Dual Screen accessory attached. LG says the screen can lock into any angle for example at 120°, you can use one screen as a game controller; at 140° you can use the phone as a mini laptop; stand it or use it as a tent at 270°; or flip it back 360° to receive a call.

The LG G8 ThinQ has a 6.4-inch OLED screen with a waterdrop notch, a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage that can be expanded up to 2TB via a MicroSD card slot. The LG Dual Screen accessory has the same 6.4-inch FHD+ OLED display and connects to the phone via a USB Type-C port.

The phone has a 12MP f/1.8 primary rear camera whiile a 13MP f/2.4 super wide-angle camera is the second sensor. Its selfie camera is a 32MP f/1.9 sensor. The LG G8 ThinQ has features such as Night View, 4K Time Lapse, AI Action Shot, Cine Shot, and Studio Mode.

Other features are an in-display fingerprint scanner, 2.4W stereo speaker, dedicated Google Assistant button, DTS:X Surround Sound, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a 4000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.

The LG G8X ThinQ will be available at Amazon, AT&T, and Sprint. It will ship with a free LG Dual Screen Accessory. LG said promotions for pre-orders will be announced by partners later. However, some eligible buyers will be able to get the phone for just $399.

LG will be attending IFA 2019 to announce new smartphones. The teaser video revealed one of the phones will be compatible with LG’s Dual Screen accessory which was announced at MWC alongside the LG V50 ThinQ 5G. Yesterday, LG and NAVER, South Korea’s largest search engine provider announced a browser called Whale specially designed for LG Dual Screen.

Whale is based on Google’s open-source Chromium browser and it brings what NAVER calls “omnitasking”. Omnitasking allows you to run several tasks simultaneously on one screen.

The browser has split-screen support with an adjustable divider and allows you to browse two sites in the same tab. When you add the LG Dual Screen accessory, it takes it to a whole new level, allowing you to browse on two screens and move between them seamlessly. An example given by LG says if you are shopping online, you can view the store’s main menu on one screen and read product descriptions on the other screen. If you are also a multiple language speaker, you can read the news in two different languages simultaneously on the Whale browser.

LG revealed in the press release that it plans to launch more devices with support for LG Dual Screen and some will be announced at IFA Berlin. These phones will come with the NAVER Whale browser pre-installed.

Hyo Kim who is the head of the NAVER Whale team said the browser will be available in more languages by the end of the year.
