According to TheElec report, the South Korean display maker has sent the company a proposal for a new TV that sports a 55 inch transparent OLED panel. This TV would also fall under the brand’s Home Entertainment Company (TV business unit), as per sources close to the matter. Additionally, the display will be fixed on the TV like a traditional TV, unlike, the company’s rollable OLED TV or smart bed, which had a screen panel that could be pulled out.

The sources further added that the Home Entertainment Company is planning on reviewing the proposal going forward. So, if this plan is approved, the development for LG’s transparent OLED TV will likely begin during the second half of this year. On the other hand, the official launch could be set sometime in 2023. Since it is a transparent panel, LG Display will most likely supply the transparent screen with strengthened glass covering.

As of right now, LG Electronics has already made transparent OLED products. However, these models are only for enterprises rather than consumers. One of these include signage, which were made by the company’s Business Solutions unit. In other words, we might soon we transparent OLED TVs from the South Korean company hit global markets. Notably, Xiaomi already sells a 55 inch OLED TV with a transparent display, which was first unveiled back in 2020.

As you may be aware, a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is sweeping through several countries bringing back the need to maintain precautionary measures ranging from the use of nose masks, physical distancing, and other such measures.

In order to help check the spread of the virus, LG has launched a disinfection robot that is equipped with ultraviolet-C (UV-C) lamps on its sides. LG says the UV-C lamp features an emission wavelength between 100 to 280nm that is effective in killing germs. The company also disclosed that research by the Korea Conformity Laboratories, a national research institute shows that the UV-C lamp on the robot is 99.9% effective in killing bacteria coliform and staphylococcus aureus from within a metre radius.

Editor’s Pick: Google, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi to launch foldable phones in 2021

In terms of the build, LG’s disinfecting robot is 160cm tall and comes with autonomous driving technology so it can wade through obstacles. It was designed to disinfect objects and areas that are reachable by hand. The company plans to deploy them in places such as hotels, hospitals, and schools which contained many separated and independent spaces.

The robots will help to alleviate health workers’ workloads at a time when disinfection is more important than ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company said.

LG is equally developing an alternative version that sprays disinfectants instead of having UV-C lamp. This version will be more suitable for places with more open areas such as offices, restaurants, and transportation stations, the company hinted.

The Korean tech giant is expected to officially display the disinfecting robot at the 2020 Korea Electronics Show in COEX from December 9 to 12.

China was able to contain the novel Coronavirus outbreak with robots playing a big role. Robots ranging from disinfection robots, nursing robots, consultation robots, to transport robots were deployed to fight the disease, in order to prevent the spread.

LG has also jettisoned some of its research and production positions and realigned others to fit with its new business model, which may imply redundancy for a segment of the company’s staff. The move is part of plans to rely more on LG’s in-house research and development and production of high-end smartphones, with low and mid-end ones to be produced by ODM.

In 2013 LG was ranked No. 3 in the global smartphone market by Strategy Analytics, seven years later, the company is not even among the top seven OEMs, indicating massive regression in turnover and market share over this period, with Chinese brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo, taking preeminent positions at the top, research firm Counterpoint stated.

Further illuminating the scenario, the research firm states that LG knows it is competing with Chinese competitors, not Apple or Samsung, and it is seeking to add to its lower-end models’ value by using Chinese original design manufacturers, according to Counterpoint analyst, Tom Kang.

Going further, Kang states that even if LG outsources the production of that segment of its products, without the requisite marketing ability, it is bound to come short against Chinese tech firms who have a better marketing strategy.

According to OTI, the investment will be used to help accelerate the adoption of the firm’s materials in mass production, including its ConducTorrTM CPM solution for under-display cameras.

Earlier this month, OTI announced its latest version of ConducTorrTM Cathode Patterning Material (CPM) is ready for mass production and will start shipping in Q4 2020 for use in next-generation mobile devices and other displays.

“We are thrilled to have LG Technology Ventures as a valuable partner for the development of our materials as we gear up for mass production,” said Michael Helander, Co-Founder and CEO of OTI Lumionics. “It is great validation to have a leading brand like LG partner in our efforts to create the most advanced display solutions in the industry.”

Manufacturers are looking for innovative solutions to speed the development of transparent displays. OTI focuses on cathode patterning to enable new display applications for OLEDs, including transparent displays, under-display cameras and sensors, foldable displays, and automotive displays.

A statement by Michael Falcon, investment director for LG Technology Ventures reads; “LG Technology Ventures has been closely monitoring the progress of OTI and is excited to now become an investor. We look forward to working with OTI to help commercialize its technology in multiple display applications.”

LG’s investment is said to be part of a larger strategic funding round, which including participation from another leading consumer electronics brand as well as existing investors Anzu Partners and Draper Dragon.

LG is a household name in the electronics industry and Hisense is also a brand wIt a strong presence in consumer electronics products, best known for its TVs. Hisense is particularly a popular brand in the US. LG has sued Hisense for allegedly infringing on four of its patents. In the suit filed before a US court, LG claims that most of the Hisense TV models being sold in the US use as many as four of its patented technologies.

In the suit filed with the District Court of California, LG demanded Hisense stop using its patented technologies and pay damages. court filing details the infringed patents to include those that improve user interface and speed up data transmission based on Wi-Fi.

EDITOR’S PICK: Vivo is the leading 5G smartphone brand in China with 54% market share: IDC

Hisense has aggressively been expanding its operations in the US in recent times. Apart from its blossoming US market, Hisense is also growing astronomically in other parts of the world. The brand was ranked as the world’s fourth-largest TV provider by sales in the first half of the year. It has been aggressively expanding its operations in the US.

Quite interestingly, LG and Hisense retail stores are usually situated side-by-side in most cities I have visited. But that doesn’t in any way suggest they are partners. LG seems to have stepped up measures aimed at curbing patent violations by both global and domestic rivals. LG reportedly sued three European home appliance manufacturers at a court in Munich in September alleging that they infringed its ice-making patents for side-by-side refrigerators. According to Jeon Saeng-gyu, executive vice president at LG Electronics, “The company will take stern measures against patent infringements in order to protect its intellectual property.”

The company raked in a whopping $54.4 billion in revenue and a record profit of $2.4 billion. Unfortunately, LG Mobile still continued its downward spiral with a net loss of $700 million last year while the company’s other divisions were reporting record profits. However, the CEO of LG Electronics, Qiao Yujin, has stated that the company will not be leaving the mobile phone business anytime soon.

The CEO hinted that the company’s IOT ecosystem which includes cars and smart home appliances is built around its smartphones so there isn’t any chance the company will quit the smartphone business anytime soon. Qiao also hinted that the Korean giant is in the second year of restructuring the smartphone business. Also, he disclosed that the restructuring activity will continue until next year. He was quick to clarify that the electronics giant doesn’t intend to downsize the workforce on its smartphone division but is working hard to build consumer trust. He also hinted that the company is ready to launch a new model apparently referring to the LG G8 ThinQ.

The report for 2018 signify the fourth straight year, totalling 15 quarters that LG Mobile has been on the losing end with a loss of $192 million in 2017. Due to its diverse streams of businesses which includes home appliances and air solution, home entertainment, and vehicle components, the company was able to record an operating profit of 1.34 trillion won ($1.16 billion).

Although LG managed to record a profit higher than that of 2015, 2016 was not its best year due to the loss it recorded in the mobile division. The total revenue generated by the company for 2016 was put at 55.37 trillion won ($47.92 billion) and net income was 126.3 billion won ($109.31 million).

For the fourth quarter of 2016, the company generated 14.78 trillion won ($12.79 billion) which is 11.7% higher than what was recorded in the the previous quarter and 1.5% higher than that of the same quarter in 2015. But while LG recorded a profit of 348.9 billion won ($299.4 million) in Q4 2015, it recorded a loss of 258.8 billion won ($223.98 million) in Q4 2016, its first quarterly loss in 6 years.

Where the mobile division comes into play is explained as follows: first it contributed 2.9 trillion won ($2.51 billion) to the revenue generated in Q4 2016 which is 15% higher than that of Q3 2016 but 23% lower than that of Q4 2015.

LG had an explanation for the loss. In the company’s words “Profitability was hampered by weak sales of the G5 smartphone and higher marketing investments”. The G5 was LG’s stab at modularity, and sadly it failed. They have learnt their lesson already and have said they won’t be replicating the modularity design in the LG G6 which is due to be announced on February 26 at Mobile World Congress.
