The LG G series and V series models follow each other, separated by a couple of months. The Korean tech giant may jettison that schedule, that is if news emanating from South Korea is anything to go by. The company is reportedly working towards releasing its next V-series flagship, LG V50 ThinQ alongside the G-series model – G8 instead of leaving it till around October.

The news was carried by Korean blog ETNews that the LG V50 ThinQ 5G will be released this Spring alongside the LG G8 ThinQ. As earlier reported, LG will be releasing a 5G phone separate from the flagship G8. That phone is now tipped to be the V50 ThinQ and it will be making its debut half a year early.

Read Also: OnePlus emerges as the leading premium smartphone brand in India in 2018

We don’t need to dig too deep to know why the company is releasing the two flagship models at the same time. It obviously doesn’t want to be left out of the race to the next-generation network technology. Since LG is already losing out in the battle with competitor, it isn’t launching the 5G feature on the G8 which will be more expensive. Rather, the next-gen 5G support will be on a more budget-friendly alternative for customers who can’t afford to make the leap to 5G yet. It indeed promises to be a costly leap, much like the first generation of 4G devices 8 years ago, as ETNews pegs the LG V50 ThinQ 5G’s price between 1.3 million Korean Won (about $1,162 US) and 1.5 million Won (about $1,342 US). Other 5G phones from competitors are expected to be way higher than these ones.

With MWC 2019 nearing, companies have now started teasing their upcoming products and features.

Joining the list of such companies is South Korea-based LG, which is teased a new touchless gesture-based navigation feature, likely for its upcoming flagship LG G8, through a teaser video posted on YouTube related to LG Premier event at MWC 2019.

The company has scheduled a launch event on 24th February CCIB, Barcelona and has also sent out ‘Save The Date’ invites. LG is likely to launch the G8 smartphone at the event and will then showcase it at MWC 2019 which commences from 25th February and ends on 28th February.

Recently, it was reported that the LG G8 will come with “Sound on Display” technology in which instead of having a traditional speaker, the sound is produced by vibrating the display panel. The sound is produced by vibrations of the screen caused by ‘exciter’ which is positioned behind the screen. LG is already using this technology in its Crystal Sound OLED TVs.

According to the reports, the phone will come with a waterdrop notch — something that most of the smartphone manufacturers have already adopted in order to offer higher screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood, the phone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship chipset.

The phone’s renders featuring a notched display and dual rear camera sensors surfaced online a few days ago but the company’s Head of Global Corporate Communication denied that claiming that the renders are correct but are not of G8.

If the reports are to be believed, then LG is going to launch multiple smartphones during Mobile World Congress. We’ll have to wait until the official launch event to know what’s up the company’s sleeves and to know more about this touchless gesture system.

According to OnLeaks, the LG G8 will come with a feature called “Sound on Display” based on info from a source. This isn’t the first time we have heard of this technology and to be honest, it isn’t even new. Last year, Samsung demoed a phone with the technology at a display event. It was rumored then that the feature will come with one of their flagships in 2019. It was also said that LG was working on bringing it to its mobile phones too.

According to my sources, #LGG8 will feature Sound on Display (SoD) technology…

— Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks) January 3, 2019

LG already has TVs with the technology. Its Crystal Sound OLED TVs don’t have a traditional speaker, instead, sounds are produced by vibrating the display panel. The sound is actually produced by vibrations of the screen caused by what is called an exciter which is positioned behind the screen. The audio is actually very clear and loud and the vibrations do not affect the display. Now that technology has been shrunk down to fit into a phone.

The advantage this brings is that the top bezel where the receiver sits on your regular phone can be completely eliminated. The front camera already has multiple new homes, so that isn’t an issue.

READ MORE: LG announces Android Pie update roadmap, G7 ThinQ gets it first

At the moment, we do not know what the LG G8 looks like, so we can’t say if the switch from a traditional speaker to Sound on Display means the phone will have an edge-to-edge display.

A top executive of the LG Mobile has revealed that the company is all set to unveil its flagship phone in the first half of this year.

Hwang Jeong-hwan who has been leading LG’s mobile division since November 2017 said to the media at MWC 2018 that when it comes to releasing its new model, it won’t be chasing the rivaling brands.

The mobile business of LG has been encountering losses and poor sales since couple of years. The newly appointed CEO and President of LG Mobile is wants to create a “structure that allows sustainable profits” by driving the mobile business in a new direction.

Previous reports had suggested that the company is thinking about launching its upcoming flagship with a new name instead of G7. Hwang said, “Changing the name of our premium phone represents an overhaul of our brand. We have maintained our G, V naming strategy and changing that requires us to have confidence in presenting that to our customers, and for us to have planned it in advance. Some say that we need to change our brand now, but we won’t act prematurely.”

Hwang said that rather than claiming that its phones are innovative, the company will be focusing on regaining the trust of its customers by making low-end to premium phones that they can use without inconvenience. He added that LG will be focusing on the basics of quality. Also, the company won’t be increasing the prices of its smartphones by adding unnecessary features that consumers won’t use.

Well-known tipster Evan Blass had revealed earlier in this month that the upcoming LG flagship is codenamed as Judy. Citing a person familiar with LG’s plans for Judy phone revealed that the handset will be coming with MLCD+ display that will offer 800-nit brightness, Snapdragon 845 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, dual 16-megapixel sensors with f/1.6 aperture lenses, stereo speakers, wireless charging and IP68 certified chassis with military standard durability. Blass added that LG may announce it in June this year.
