<p>It has been a while since <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/23/lg-pivots-business-phone-electric-cars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG announced its exit from the smartphone market</a>, joining other defunct phone brands like Nokia. Although, it still offered support for its existing lineup of devices. But now, the brand&#8217;s smartphones has finally reached the end of the line.</p>

<h2>LG to Shut Down Smartphone Update Servers in 2025</h2>

<p>The South Korean tech giant&#8217;s last flagship was the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/lg-wing-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG Wing</a>, which <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/28/lg-wing-5g-dual-display-phone-and-lg-velvet-launched-for-rs-69990-948-and-36990-504/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">debuted way back in October 2020</a>. Following this, LG announced that it is pulling away from smartphones to focus on EVs in April 2021. The brand later sold all of its smartphone related patents to other smartphone OEMs like Oppo. While the mobile division shut down, support was still available for the latest gen LG devices. LG at least ensured update up to Android 12 on eligible smartphones. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="608" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-1024x608.jpeg?x10805" alt="LG Wing" class="wp-image-530042" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-1024x608.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-300x178.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-768x456.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-696x413.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-708x420.jpeg 708w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1.jpeg 1068w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>LG Wing</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>But since then, there has not been any major update rolling out for any smartphone. There were still security patches that were promised for another three years. LG has announced that it is shutting down its smartphone update servers. Now, the company shared a warning a couple of weeks back. In its official forums post, LG shared appreciation for everyone who supported its mobile business and announced that it will close the mobile phone software upgrade (FOTA), update center, and LG Bridge service. </p>

<p>All of these services will go offline on 30th June 2025. This announcement likely doesn&#8217;t affect many users, but it marks the complete end of LG smartphones. You never know, certain LG devices might become collector&#8217;s pieces in a couple of years.</p>

<p>Well, LG has now released an <a href="http://www.lgnewsroom.com/2021/04/lg-announces-three-year-pledge-for-os-updates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">official statement</a> to that effect. The company disclosed that it is pledging to push up to three versions of Android updates for all its premium smartphones. The three updates will start counting from when the phone was released. Thus, a phone that has already received Android 10 and 11 updates will only be eligible for one more major update. Whereas phones like the LG Velvet, G-series, V-series, and Wing released recently may go up to Android 13.  The company also disclosed that some models released in 2020 like the LG Stylo and K series will get two OS updates.</p>

<p>LG in an earlier <a href="http://www.lgnewsroom.com/2021/04/lg-to-close-mobile-phone-business-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">official statement</a> disclosed that it was stepping away from the mobile phone business and will focus on other areas like electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart homes, robotics, artificial intelligence, and business-to-business solutions, as well as platforms and services.</p>
<p>The brand also hinted that it will clear out existing stock but expects to completely shut down the entire mobile business by July 31. Before that happens, LG says it will work closely with suppliers and business partners for a seamless winding down of the mobile phone division.</p>
<p>Going forward, LG plans to deploy its robust mobile expertise and mobile-related technologies like 6G in other businesses, and also in existing and future products.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-136044 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="700" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>According to a report from <a href="https://www.donga.com/news/article/all/20210321/106003359/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>DongA Ilbo</em></a> (Via <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-21/lg-electronics-may-close-down-mobile-phone-business-donga" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Bloomberg</em></a>), the South Korean tech giant&#8217;s plans on selling its mobile phone business has failed, with negotiations with Germany’s Volkswagen AG and Vietnam’s Vingroup JSC now being off the table. Earlier this year, the consumer electronics manufacturer&#8217;s CEO had stated that the company is considering all options for its loss making business. Since then, it has been reported that LG Electronics has been seeking the sale of the smartphone unit.</p>
<p>Previously, the company had apparently <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/22/lg-halts-development-for-the-lg-rollable/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">halted the development of its upcoming smartphone with a rollable display</a>, back in February. Now, it is also being reported that the brand will also be shelving its plans to launch any new smartphones within the the first half of this year. In other words, it is effectively stopping any new devices from rolling out at the moment. Furthermore, the company may share its decision to the public and to its employees as soon as early April.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-364890 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.png?x10805" alt="LG Rollable Smartphone" width="738" height="416" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable.png 738w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/lgrollable-696x392.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px" /></p>
<p>Notably, a recent <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/19/378428-lg-rollable-smartphone-bluetooth-sig-certification/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Bluetooth SIG certification has given hope of the rollable smartphone&#8217;s</a> launch, while a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/24/a-company-spokesman-says-lg-rollable-development-not-suspended/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">company spokesperson had also stated that the handset&#8217;s development has not been suspended</a>. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://news.softpedia.com/news/lg-releases-windows-10-app-to-pair-smartphones-with-pcs-532053.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>Softpedia</em> </a>report, LG is launching the new Windows 10 app as its mobile phone isn&#8217;t on the compatible list for the Microsoft Your Phone app, which supports devices like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> flagship handset. In other words, the South Korean tech giant isn&#8217;t waiting for Microsoft to bring its devices in the compatibility list but and is launching its own service, which will allow users to sync their smartphone with Windows 10 that is already live in the Microsoft Store at the moment.</p>
<p>The new app is called Virtoo, which utilizes Bluetooth to pair your PC with your smartphone. This also enabled the PC to gain access to certain smartphone functionalities directly from the computer. As per official notes, &#8220;Virtoo by LG is a smartphone app for LG PC users. It allows a Bluetooth connection between a smartphone and a PC to enable users to use various smartphone functions on the PC. Use Virtoo by LG to enjoy a more comfortable computing environment.&#8221;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-136044 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="700" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Keep in mind, however, that not every LG handset model will be supported and not all features will be available for everybody. Meaning, there will be some limitations despite the company launching its own dedicated app to sync Windows 10 devices. Although, the new app will allow users to send messages from their PCs, access to the media stored on the phone, make calls, and even all contacts and allow screen mirroring as well.</p>

In the final quarter, the company saw a massive loss as its mobile division continues to deteriorate in the smartphone industry.</p>
<p>According to the report, the South Korean tech giant saw a loss of over $850 million in Q4 of 2019 as sales of smartphones continued to decline and show little sign of recovering in the near future. LG generated KRW 1.32 trillion in revenue between October and December 2019. The figures translate to roughly 1.12 billion US Dollars, which is a sizable amount, but still noticeably lower than its revenue of 1.41 billion US Dollars in Q4 of 2018.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-136044 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="LG" width="700" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/lg-logo-300x171.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Furthermore, the mobile division suffered huge setbacks in the final quarter as well, measuring about KRW 332.2 million. Meaning, about 280 million US Dollars was lost during this period of time, which is also higher than the 270 million US Dollars lost in the same quarter of 2018.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/31/us-urges-uk-to-ban-huawei-5g-networks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">US urges UK to reconsider its decision allowing Huawei to build 5G networks</a> </strong></h6>
<p>Despite LG&#8217;s best efforts to reduce cost and operational expenditures, the company is still showing negative growth. Looking at the overall report for 2019, the electronics brand&#8217;s declining mobile division generated 5 billion US Dollars but experienced a large sum of 858.34 million during the same time. This also highlights LG further declining over 2018, where the company lost just 650 million US Dollars in the same quarter. From a multinational corporation&#8217;s point of view, the financial figures are terrible for any company.</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_284973" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-284973" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-284973 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x.png?x10805" alt="LG" width="1200" height="674" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x.png 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-300x169.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-768x431.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-1024x575.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-696x391.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-1068x600.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/lg-g8x-748x420.png 748w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-284973" class="wp-caption-text">LG G8X ThinQ</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>However, a silver lining does present itself to the company. LG, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/30/samsung-q4-profits-slumps-by-34-hopes-5g-improves-current-situation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">similar to Samsung</a>, hopes that the newer and faster bandwidth, 5G network, will help improve its sales figures for 2020. As of right now, the adoption of 5G is still low and confined to a handful of countries including, South Korea and China. The former is the home country for both LG and Samsung through which both seem to benefit the most. Notably, other brands like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> are also quickly catching up in these regions and LG stated that it is expecting &#8220;severe competition&#8221; in the mid range smartphone segment.</p>
<p>LG said that the decline in sales of its smartphone in Q4 of 2019 is due to its stagnant sales in the overseas market, especially in the mid-range segment of smartphones. Additionally, the company attributed the higher expenditure to clearing existing inventory and the launch of new products.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-234441" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-1.jpg?x10805" alt="LG Waterdrop Notch Phone" width="573" height="550" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-1.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-1-300x288.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-1-768x737.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px" /></p>
<p>According to the latest patent filed by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lg/">LG</a>, the South Korea-based company is all set to make a move towards waterdrop notch that will provide a higher screen-to-body ratio. However, the said design was first filed by the company in April last year.</p>
<p>The patent application describes a smartphone with having a vertical dual-camera setup on the back and a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. Based on the design, it seems that the phone will look similar to the Essential Phone with a notch in the phone&#8217;s center.</p>
<p>Looking at the sketches, the phone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, which most smartphone manufacturers are ditching and there&#8217;s a SIM tray on top. The power button key is situated on the right side while the volume rocker keys are present on the left side.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-234442" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-2.jpg?x10805" alt="LG Waterdrop Notch Phone" width="573" height="550" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-2.jpg 800w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-2-300x288.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/lg-waterdrop-2-768x737.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 573px) 100vw, 573px" /></p>
<p>Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to launch the LG G8 ThinQ and LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone next month at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain. Along with that, we expect the company to launch a few more mid-range devices at MWC 2019.</p>
<p>Recently, it was reported that the LG G8 will <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/03/lg-g8-rumored-to-come-with-sound-on-display-technology/">come with “Sound on Display” technology</a> in which instead of having a traditional speaker, the sound is produced by vibrating the display panel. The sound is produced by vibrations of the screen caused by ‘exciter’ which is positioned behind the screen. LG is already using this technology in its Crystal Sound OLED TVs.</p>

<div class="cat-wrapper"></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Under the hood, the phone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship chipset. The phone’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/18/lg-g8-thinq-360-degree-renders-leak-design-and-key-details/">renders</a> featuring a notched display and dual rear camera sensors surfaced online a few days ago but the company’s Head of Global Corporate Communication denied that claiming that the renders are correct but are not of G8.</p>
