LG had a number of devices in the pipeline when it announced its exit from the mobile phone industry in early April. One of them was LG VELVET 2 Pro, the company’s first-ever proper flagship smartphone in recent times. Though this handset has been now canceled along with multiple others, it gets support for Google ARCore.

Since LG put an end to its phone business, it canceled all the upcoming new products. As the company had already manufactured some limited units of the LG VELVET 2 Pro, it sold them off to its employees with no software support.

Hence, though the device never went official, there are some working units out in the wild. One of them even appeared in a YouTube video. As a result, we not only know the design of this handset but also its specs.

Having said that, since certification for certain services takes some time, the LG VELVET 2 Pro gets support for Google ARCore after it gets axed by the company. This does not mean the phone will ever see an official release. It just means that people who got their hands on the smartphone can use apps that require Google ARCore.

The LG VELVET 2 Pro features a 6.8-inch FHD+ curved P-OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, 8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, 64MP (wide) + 12MP (ultra-wide) + 8MP (telephoto) triple cmaera setup, 10MP selfie camera, and a 4,500mAh battery.

Last year, LG killed the G-series of smartphones to introduce the new LG Velvet lineup. The phone received a good reception from both users and critics. The company was working on its successor but given that the mobile phone business has been shuttered, we will not get the LG Velvet 2 Pro that was planned.

However, an unboxing video of the LG Velvet 2 Pro aka LG Rainbow has been leaked online (via Tron), showing what the smartphone could have been. The unreleased smartphones have been sold by the company to its employees.

The video shows that the device continues to have the same design as its predecessor, with a curved display upfront for a higher screen-to-body ratio. As per the reports, it would have featured a 6.8-inch P-OLED display panel with Full HD+ screen resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR support.

On the backside, there’s a triple-camera setup with the company’s new raindrop design, consisting of an OIS-enabled 64-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto sensor. For taking selfies and video calling, there’s a 10-megapixel snapper up front.

The smartphone is running the Android operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own custom user interface. It reportedly packs Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. It packs a 4,500mAh battery with fast charging support.

This indicates that, unlike its predecessor, LG planned to position this new model as a flagship smartphone. However, as mentioned above, with LG shutting down its mobile phone business, this smartphone won’t be available commercially.

Even though LG is not making new phones, a live shot of the canceled Velvet 2 Pro had appeared online and it was later reported that the company is selling final units of the unreleased Velvet 2 Pro and LG Rollable to its employees. Now, tipster Tron has shared the marketing materials of the Velvet 2 Pro to reveal that it could have been a flagship device rather than a mid-ranger like last year’s model.

LG Velvet 2 Pro specifications (Rumored)

The leaked promo documents show that the LG Velvet 2 Pro would have featured the Snapdragon 888 flagship chipset. It would have sported a massive 6.8-inch P-OLED panel with FHD+ resolution, HDR, and a 120Hz refresh rate support. The images show that the display of the Velvet 2 Pro would have had curved edges.

The SD888 chip would have been coupled with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It would have housed a 4,500mAh battery and it would have measured only 7.5mm in thickness.

The rear-facing camera unit of the Velvet 2 Pro would have flaunted an OIS-enabled 64-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, and an 8-megapixel telephoto camera. For selfies, it would have featured an autofocus-enabled 10-megapixel front camera. The leaked specs suggest that the Velvet 2 Pro would have been an impressive phone, but unfortunately, it will never make it to the market.

Tech giant LG who recently announced it was exiting the smartphone market, may have decided to sell off the remnants of its unreleased models to the company’s staff. A recent tweet by a Twitter user with the name @FrontTron indicates that the company’s staffers in South Korea have the opportunity to purchase the few remaining models at an extremely cheap price.

The tweet also detailed around 3,000 units of the unreleased models to be available to the Korea-based staff of LG Electronics. The devices on offer are the LG Rainbow/Velvet 2 Pro and the LG Rollable, both of which were never released.

The Velvet 2 Pro is what should have been the successor of the LG Velvet that was released last year but it wasn’t released before the company announced its exit from the smartphone market. The stand-out feature of the Velvet 2 Pro is its pressure-sensitive touch sensor button which controls the volume and serves as the power button.

The Velvet 2 Pro is an all-around improvement from its predecessor, although the Twitter post did not offer much on the specifications of the models that were on sale. We, however, know that it comes with a triple camera setup at the rear and a front camera housed in a waterdrop notch.

The leak mentioned that the auctioned devices would only enjoy six months of technical support and no software updates. It also indicated that the Velvet 2 Pro would be sold to staffers for around $170. The outlook is that there could be a surge of demand in-house. The company is also prohibiting a resale of the models by successful buyers.

The moves by LG in selling off unreleased products is a culmination of its decision to pull out from the smartphone market, which was made public in April 2021. There could still be a few other unreleased LG models that may also be sold off via the in-house template.

LG confirmed it was shutting down its smartphone business last month. Following that announcement, we have seen some of the devices it had planned for release surface on the internet such as the LG Rollable and the LG V70. Now, it is the turn of the LG Velvet 2 Pro, a device that should have launched as the successor to the LG Velvet announced a year ago.

The LG Velvet 2 Pro (let’s hope we get to see the standard version soon) is actually a finished device that is being sold only to LG employees in South Korea according to Tron (@FrontTron) who shared images and details of the phone on Twitter. He adds that there are approximately 3000 units available and employees are limited to just two units which they can not resell.

The selling price for the phone is stated to be about $170 which is definitely a fraction of what the phone would have sold for if it actually launched. It will come with 2 official jelly cases.

One of the images shows the LG Velvet 2 Pro has a similar design to the original. The Raindrop camera style has been retained but now all three cameras protrude unlike the LG Velvet that has only one of its cameras protruding. The back is curved and obviously made of glass and we can catch a glimpse of the gold-plated frame. According to the leaker, this color variant is called Beige and there are two others – Black which has a gossy finish and Bimetallic Bronze which has a matte finish.

The LG Velvet 2 Pro has a curved display with a camera in the center. Sorry to (not) disappoint but it is a U-shaped notch like we have on the first-gen model. While the specs of the phone are unknown, it has been revealed that the phone ditches physical buttons (power and volume control) for pressure-sensitive ones.

The source has revealed that LG will not provide software updates for the device which is not surprising considering the device never launched. However, those who purchase it will get about 6 months of after-sales service or for the period parts are in stock.
