DJI, a China-based drone manufacturer, has announced that the company will be hosting a new launch event on 15th June. While the upcoming product has not been revealed yet, the company says that it will help set a new standard.

It’s noteworthy that the teaser for the launch event comes from DJI’s “Pro” solutions arm which typically works on the development of innovative products for the filmmakers.

Although the upcoming product from the company remains unknown, leaks have hinted that the company could announce the third-generation DJI Ronin-S camera stabilizer as well as the RS 3 gimbal.

If the reports are to be believed, then the upcoming camera product from the company will be integrated with a LiDAR range sensor to automatically and instantly maintain perfect focus in even the most dynamic of situations.

There’s also a hint of antennas in the teaser poster and leaks indicate something related to the video transmitter along with the DJI RS 3 and RS 3 Pro gimbals. To know for sure what’s up the company’s sleeves, we will have to wait for the official launch event.

Another tipster has just shared news of the upcoming Apple iPhone 13 series. Although, rather than leaking new information, the leaker has basically corroborated reports from the past regarding the iPhone 13 Pro featuring a LiDAR sensor.

LiDAR will only be coming to the pro iPhone models. Earlier this year it seemed Apple wanted to release all iPhone 13/12S models with LiDAR but due to one reason or another, it won’t be happening this year.

According to a tweet from @dylandkt, the high end models within the series, which is the iPhone 13 Pro lineup, will exclusively feature the new LiDAR sensor on the back. The tipster further added that the Cupertino based giant had initially aimed at including the sensor across the entire 2021 iPhone lineup, which was also previously rumored. However, the brand had to skip this feature for the lower end models due to certain unknown reasons.

In other words, the iPhone 13 Mini and base iPhone 13 could’ve also featured LiDAR technology as well. But now, only the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max would have the additional sensor on the rear. Notably, the tipster has been correct with certain predictions regarding upcoming Apple products in the past. For those unaware, LiDAR scanner was first introduced by the iPhone maker back in 2020 with the iPad Pro and then arrived in the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

This technology uses Time of Flight systems to measure the distance between the sensor and the object so that the camera can measure the distance precisely. The company has also applied this technology to enhance its AR experience primarily and also uses it in its Night Mode to improve image results as well. So stay tuned for more updates.

Samsung launched the Galaxy S10 back in 2019 with a ToF sensor. Later, the company continued it till the Galaxy S20 series but ditched it on the Galaxy Note 20 and the 2021’s Galaxy S21 series. Now, a report by ETNews says that the company will do the same for the upcoming Galaxy S-series (Tentatively: Galaxy S22).

Apple’s LiDAR sensors work similar to the Time of Flight sensors on Samsung and help in depth information like distance measurement. Its prowess is showcased more in areas of AR, VR apps, and games.

However, the difference between Samsung and Apple in the past was that the former used an indirect ToF sensor which works well only when the light is strong enough. The Depth Vision ToF sensors on the Galaxy S20 series had a range of 3 meters while Apple made sure they cover as long as 6 meters.

This led to a lot of inaccuracy and eventually, Samsung removed it last year. This year, it continued the momentum and as quoted in the report(via Sammobile),  a Samsung executive says that users are happy with the camera features on the Galaxy S21 and hence, there’s no need for a ToF lens on the successor(probably Galaxy S22).

Either way, it’s too early to talk about the Galaxy S22 series right now considering we are just three months past the Galaxy S21 launch. However, we can expect the company to reveal them around the Q1 of 2022.

The automobile industry has in recent times seen new entrants especially with the shift towards autonomous and electric vehicles. Just recently, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi announced plans to commence the manufacture of electric vehicles (EVs). Another Chinese manufacturer, drone-maker DJI is finally making a move towards the automobile industry.

A post by DJI Automotive’s official WeChat account has revealed that the company will be releasing car-related products at the Shanghai Auto Show which will commence on April 19 and end on April 28. The announcement did not specify the product that we should expect from the renowned commercial drone-maker but can be taken as an official announcement of the brand’s entrance into the automobile industry.

Of course, DJI won’t likely build a complete car anytime soon but the company had earlier hinted of plans to focus on smart driving systems as well as software and hardware solutions to help automakers quickly build affordable smart cars.

DJI Automotive is said to be a brand of DJI’s intelligent driving business, which is committed to using space intelligent technology to empower travel, focusing on the R&D, production, and sales of intelligent driving systems and their core components. Earlier this year, job listings by the Chinese tech giant revealed it was hiring engineers with experience in related fields such as auto electronics, autonomous driving, in-car software, and the automobile industry.

Some persons familiar with the matter also disclosed that that drone maker was planning to sell driver-assist technology which includes LiDAR sensors, a crucial component of self-driving vehicles. At present, DJI has nearly 70% of the global commercial drone market, and the LiDAR technology used on drones also plays a key role in autonomous driving.

DJI has reportedly also got other solutions for autonomous driving functions. We’ll have to wait for the event to see what the company has in store.

Earlier this week, Apple was granted a new patent that was related to its upcoming Project Titan. The new patent was for technology related to assisting the driver’s visibility to help in poor weather conditions.

According to a PatentlyApple report, the Cupertino based giant was recently granted the patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office, which is related to its Project Titan. The document in question is regarding a new visibility system that is designed to assist drivers in viewing key road signs. This would be especially useful in bad weather conditions like heavy snow, thick fogs or smogs, and even dust. In driving, visibility is a very crucial aspect, which heavily ties into safety as well.

Thus, in low visibility conditions, a system that helps drivers in seeing other vehicles on the road or other hazards could reduce the risk of accidents or any other incidents. As per the patent, the vehicle with this system would be able to lower the risk of collision by utilizing an additional system that features radar systems, vision based cameras, and even light detection and ranging through LiDAR technology. Since poor weather conditions could also affect the reliability of the visibility system, like water vapor that can absorb or scatter light, improving detectability is paramount to such systems.

The patent granted to Apple covers a retroreflector system that includes a “plurality of retroreflectors.” In other words, the retroreflectors are configured to reflect a radar signal, a light, a LiDAR signal, or any other type of signal to a respective signal source. This might even have the sensor being partially embedded in an outer panel of the vehicle, which can be configured to allow the radar signal to pass through to the plurality of retroreflectors. While the system is described in detail, it is still unknown if Apple is actually working on such a product. So stay tuned.

Apple is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone models — the iPhone 12 series in the coming weeks. While the company is yet to officially reveal the launch date, it has confirmed that the launch will be delayed by a few weeks.

For those who are unaware, Apple iPhone 12 models are reportedly coming with LiDAR scanner, which stands for “light detection and ranging” and measures distances by illuminating the target with laser light and by measuring the reflection with a sensor.

This won’t be the first time Apple opts for the LiDAR sensor on its devices. The company has already started using the LiDAR technology on this year’s iPad Pro with the ToF sensor. As per the reports, not all models will come with this tech but the Pro model will have it.

If the iPhone sales are better than expected, then the company could get more orders from Apple for the fourth quarter of the year. It currently has a monthly production capacity of 41,000 pieces. The company is expected to invest and accelerate production in Nanke Park, which is estimated to create approximately 4,000 job opportunities.

An alleged hands on video for the Apple iPhone 12 Pro has recently surfaced online. The video showcases the rear panel of the device which also reveals the LiDAR sensor placement on the 6.1 inch model.

According to a 9to5Mac report, a YouTuber named EverythingApplePro showcased an alleged rear panel of the iPhone 12 Pro. In the video, it can be observed that the upcoming flagship features a finish similar to the iPhone 11 Pro, with steel edges and matte glass. This is in line with all the recent rumors. On the rear, triple camera setup can be observed, with an arrangement similar to the camera module of the previous generation.

Notably, this camera module houses the ultra wide angle lens, which is also likely related to the LiDAR scanner. For those unaware, the iPhone 12 will reportedly feature a LiDAR scanner. However, it was said to only arrive in the 6.7 inch model. But now, the hands on video reveals that both the 6.1 inch and 6.7 inch iPhone 12 Pro models would ship with the new sensor.

Additional changes that have been observed in the video include a readjusted SIM tray and a new cutout on the right side of the device, which is likely for the 5G antenna. 9to5Mac also stated that a previous report had claimed that two models of the new iPhone will feature the LiDAR scanner, which is probably the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt, and stay tuned for more updates on the matter.

Apple started using the LiDAR technology on this year’s iPad Pro with the ToF sensor and now a report from DigiTimes claims that the same will be included in some of the upcoming iPhone 12 models as well.

LiDAR can measure distances by illuminating the target with laser light and by measuring the reflection with a sensor. The data can then be used to make accurate 3D representations of an object or environment, significantly improving AR experiences.

Although the DigiTimes report does not claim that the iPhone 12 will come with the LiDAR scanner, there have been a few reports claiming that the upcoming iPhone 12 Pro smartphone could feature it.

The Pro models of the upcoming iPhone are expected to have this scanner while the less expensive models with 5.4-inch as well as the 6.1-inch display will not have support for the LiDAR scanner as it is being regarded as a premium feature.
