Last month, Nubia announced a bunch of minion cobranded accessories. The brand products such as the new Minion themed 22.5W chargers, 30W gallium nitride chargers, 65W gallium nitride chargers, and more. 

Now, the company has announced a new Minion-themed USB Type C to Lightning cable. The cable is 1 meter long and comes with Apple’s MFi certification. The cable is made out of TPE material, and the ends are made uses the C94 material with an anti-oxidized rhodium-plated nail terminal head.

According to the company, the cable has gone through 15,000 bending tests to ensure its strength. Further, the outer shell comes with an anti-fingerprint coating, and there’s a small Minion eye printed on the lightning end.

The Nubia C2L co-branded cable will retail for 69 yuan (~$11) with introductory pricing of 59 yuan (~$9). The cable is up for preorders, and the final payment has to be made on August 23. The delivery is scheduled to begin on August 26.

Under the MFi program, Apple provides third-party companies with the technical specifications and resources needed to manufacture accessories for Apple products. The MFi program offers a wide range of wireless and wired technologies that third-party brands can use to manufacture accessories for Apple devices.

Manufacturers can apply for the MFi license through Apple and start developing third-party accessories. However, manufacturers dealing with non-electronic accessories, non-MagSafe cases, and Apple Watch bands do not need to apply for MFi certification.

It is always advised to use MFi certified accessories with your Apple products. The MFi program ensures users’ safety as it provides an easy way of finding out counterfeit products. Black Shark has announced a handful of new accessories for mobile phones. The accessories include a charger, charging cables for iPhones and Android, and shoulder buttons for mobile gaming.

Black Shark Dual-Port 30W Charger

Black Shark’s new charger has dual-ports – a USB-C port and a USB-A port and a foldable plug. It has a maximum power output of 30W but we don’t know what each port outputs as there is no official listing of the product. It has a price tag of ¥79 (~$12).

Black Shark Split Mobile Gaming Shoulder Triggers

Black Shark has also announced a pair of shoulder triggers for mobile gaming. These buttons serve as additional buttons that sit at the top of your phone. Each trigger has two buttons and is priced at ¥39 (~$6) per unit, so if you are buying for both sides, that is ¥78 (~$12).

Despite Apple’s protest, the European Parliament voted strongly in favour of adopting a common charger. The resolution received massive support of 582-40. The parliament enjoined the European Commission to adopt new rules by July that would eliminate the need for buyers to get a new charger with each new device.

The EU had, a decade ago, enacted a policy that enjoined major phone makers (including Apple) to voluntarily move towards a common standard. That has not happened and the members of the EU parliament believe that it was due to the voluntary approach so, saw a need to pass new legislation.

The resolution extols wireless chargers as a way to reduce electronic waste but notes that the rules written by the Commission should ensure that chargers can work with various phone brands.

Apple had earlier released a response while the legislative process was in motion. The company argued against a common charger saying that it will stifle innovation and inadvertently create e-waste as existing Lightning chargers and cables are swapped out for USB-C, the preferred common standard. However, the argument seems not to have had any effect on the resolution. This may be because Apple is sort of a lone ranger. Other OEMs have mostly migrated their flagship and upper midrange models to USB-C ports.

A research by Sustainably SMART had earlier shown that most of the e-waste is generated by the charging brick, not the cable. They recommended that the inclusion of a charger in the retail packaging for smartphones should be banned or disincentivized. Buyers will then have to use their old chargers instead.

This would have formed part of the resolution but there is no unified charging standard. some phones ship with 40/60W fast charging technology and would definitely charge slower when connected to a USB PD adapter. The same thing applies to wireless charging technology. However, new legislation may hit the charging brick especially as the move is aimed at reducing e-waste. The resolution notes that in 2016 the global average was 6kg of e-waste per person per year while the average for EU citizens was 16.6kg. It also calls for increased volumes of collection and recycling of old cables and chargers.

Earlier this month, the European Union announced that it wished to create a new law that could force smartphone manufacturers to adopt a single common smartphone charging standard. The EU believes it will benefit the consumers and environment but Apple has taken a stance against it.

According to the Cupertino based giant, the move to standardize smartphone chargers will stunt innovation in the industry and could leave to force conformity and also create a lot of e-waste and ultimately harm consumers. Notably, this move from Apple is clearly to protect its best interest as the company stands to suffer the most losses if the law is passed.

A large part of Apple’s revenue is generated from its accessories that the company sells from various online and offline assets. These accessories, especially chargers, arrive with the proprietary lightning port, which means that it belongs to Apple. This means that the company can even charge third party manufacturers that make accessories for Apple products.

One of the main arguments Apple stated was the “forced conformity” which could affect industry innovation. The tech giant also claimed that the move could also potentially harm the European economy. A study showed results in Apple’s favor as the law would cost consumers 1.5 billion Euros over a mere 13 million Euros in the form of environmental benefits.

The study also claims that nearly 49 percent of EU households utilize different types of chargers out of which only 0.4 percent ever face any significant issues. Apple stated that the law is obsolete as the industry is already shifting towards USB Type C ports via chargers or cable connectors. For example, the iPhone 11 Pro uses USB C but still requires a lightning cable adapter.
