You might have to add this news to the list of news you weren’t expecting to read today. LinkedIn is adding a surprising twist to its platform – games. The professional networking giant, which is typically known for helping make career connections and sharing advice, is trying to add puzzles to its platform as a method of boosting user engagement. Kind of crazy, right?

Adding games to LinkedIn will be a controversial move, only time will tell

Inspired by the viral success of Wordle and other brainteasers on the web, LinkedIn is developing its own puzzle games titled “Queens,” “Inference,” and “Crossclimb.” These casual games aim to “unlock a bit of fun, deepen relationships, and spark conversations” among users, according to a LinkedIn spokesperson.

While there’s no official launch date yet, the concept involves integrating these puzzles within the LinkedIn experience. One interesting possibility being explored is to organize player scores by workplace, potentially creating a light-hearted competition between companies. This move might seem unexpected, but it might be deeper than that. Non-gaming platforms are increasingly recognizing the power of casual games to boost user engagement.

LinkedIn’s potential entry into gaming tells us how companies are trying their best to enhance the user experience and keep people engaged. Past attempts include online education features, a news operation, and incorporating video tools to attract creators and influencers. Will this work? Will LinkedIn’s puzzle games be a hit? Only time will tell.

LinkedIn revealed a new surprise – their revenue stream on Thursday from premium subscriptions. The social media platform for professionals generated $1.7 billion from subscriptions in 2023, highlighting increased adoption of its new AI-powered job search tools.

LinkedIn Premium starts at $39.99 per month, which is a little hefty – but it works clearly!

Previously undisclosed financials since Microsoft‘s acquisition in 2016 showed LinkedIn’s total revenue at $15 billion, with $7 billion coming from corporate recruiting software. However, LinkedIn has focused on expanding its individual-targeted subscription service, with prices starting at $39.99 per month.

A key driver of this growth was the introduction of AI features in 2023. These tools include analyzing job postings to determine a candidate’s suitability, optimizing profiles for recruiters, and generating messages to potential employers.

LinkedIn COO Dan Shapero reported a 25% increase in premium subscribers during 2023, although the total user count remains undisclosed. He further stated that 70% of subscribers using the new AI tools found them valuable.

While the job market remains competitive, LinkedIn data suggests there are still two applicants for every job opening. Shapero attributes the rise in subscriptions to users seeking an edge in an uncertain economic climate.

In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has announced a fresh wave of layoffs, affecting primarily its sales, marketing, and customer support departments. This comes just months after CEO Satya Nadella had previously declared a reduction of 10,000 employees, which was anticipated to be completed by the end of March. The news of these additional job cuts was revealed as several employees updated their LinkedIn profiles to reflect their status as part of the new round of layoffs.

A lot of tech companies seem to be benefitting from AI going mainstream

A spokesperson from Microsoft confirmed the recent workforce adjustments, stating, “Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and routine part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize investments in strategic growth areas to support the future of our customers and partners.” While the statement may provide some insight into the motivation behind the layoffs, it remains unclear why these specific departments have been targeted.

Despite these layoffs, Microsoft’s financial position remains robust in 2023. Over the past six months, the company’s shares have surged by an impressive 40.74%. This upward trajectory can be attributed, at least in part, to Microsoft’s investment in the generative AI business. The company has recognized the potential of artificial intelligence, and its strategic decisions in this area have paid off handsomely.

Microsoft is not the only company benefiting from the AI revolution. Stock prices of other technology companies have experienced significant increases due to the impact of artificial intelligence. For example, Nvidia has seen its stock price soar by an astounding 194.61% in 2023, reaching record highs.

As Microsoft’s fiscal year approaches its end on March 31, 2023, the company’s net profit has risen to an impressive $18.3 billion, representing a 9% year-on-year increase. Investors eagerly await the announcement of Microsoft’s fourth-quarter earnings, which is scheduled for the end of this month.

While the news of the latest round of layoffs may unsettle some, Microsoft claims that it’s all to increase strategic focus on growth areas. Coupled with its strong financial performance, the company is clearly stating its commitment to staying ahead in the game.

In a recent development, LinkedIn, the leading workplace social platform, has implemented another aspect of generative AI. LinkedIn now allows users to directly post content using the power of generative AI. For professionals worldwide, LinkedIn has emerged as a valuable platform for sharing up-to-date resumes and networking. Users often post about their career trajectories, promotions, and achievements to enhance their job prospects. However, crafting these posts with careful planning and writing can be a hard task, especially for those who have never posted on LinkedIn before. To address this, LinkedIn’s product director, Keren Baruch, has announced the integration of generative AI into post writing, offering users a faster alternative in this era.

Generative AI will help speed up the writing process greatly, but at what cost?

To utilize this feature, users need to provide a minimum of 30 words outlining the key message they wish to convey in their post. Leveraging user input, the generative AI generates drafts that can be reviewed, edited, or directly published. Keren Baruch stated that the feature is currently in the testing phase and will eventually be accessible to all users.

Nevertheless, a lot of people have already raised their voices in objection within the LinkedIn community regarding this feature. Some users argue that it compromises the authenticity of posts on the platform. They claim that using generative AI could transform interactions on LinkedIn into exchanges between chatbots rather than real human connections.

LinkedIn’s introduction of generative AI for post writing represents a delicate balance between efficiency and authenticity. While it undeniably offers a streamlined approach to content creation, concerns about the potential loss of human touch and genuine engagement cannot be ignored.

As the feature undergoes testing, it will be crucial for LinkedIn to address user concerns and ensure that the integration of generative AI aligns with the platform’s overarching goals. Striking the right balance will be key towards maintaining the value of LinkedIn as a professional networking platform, fostering genuine interactions, and empowering individuals to advance their careers effectively. Not too long ago, LinkedIn announced AI-generated cover letters, which was something along the same line.

LinkedIn is shaking up the job search process with a new AI feature that is being tested to help candidates create personalized messages to send to hiring managers. The new feature, currently available for premium subscribers, generates brief cover letter-like messages based on information from the candidate’s profile, the job description, and the hiring manager’s profile.

LinkedIn also provides AI Writing Suggestions for Profiles

With this feature, job hunters can easily send highly personalized messages that showcase their skills and experience directly to hiring managers through the LinkedIn platform. This is expected to save candidates a significant amount of time and effort, as well as make the job search process more efficient and streamlined.

LinkedIn has previously experimented with generative AI features such as AI writing suggestions for profiles and AI-written text for collaborative articles. However, this new feature is a step forward in the use of AI in the recruitment process, as it enables candidates to quickly and easily create personalized messages that are tailored to specific job opportunities.

The AI-generated messages read like the opening sentences of a cover letter and are personalized based on the candidate’s profile, the job description, and the hiring manager’s profile. The feature has the potential to be a game-changer for job seekers, as it allows them to stand out from other applicants by sending highly personalized messages that showcase their unique skills and experiences.

While the AI-generated messages are highly personalized, LinkedIn emphasizes that candidates should still customize and edit the text to ensure that it accurately reflects their strengths and experience. This is a reminder that while AI can be helpful in generating content, human input is still essential to ensuring that the final result is accurate and effective.

One other area where LinkedIn could potentially use AI is in the recruitment process itself. For instance, AI algorithms could be trained to analyze job postings and suggest potential candidates based on their profiles and experience. This could help to streamline the recruitment process by quickly identifying the most qualified candidates for a given role.

LinkedIn, the popular career-oriented social media platform is taking a new approach to help its users with AI-powered “writing suggestions” and job descriptions. The company is aiming to make it easier for users to complete the “about” and “headline” sections of their profiles, which can often be challenging to fill out. LinkedIn is using OpenAI models to power the “enhance” tool, which LinkedIn Premium subscribers can use to generate descriptions based on their experience.

The tool aims to preserve the user’s “unique voice and style” by drawing on their job experience and skills, as well as LinkedIn’s own insights into what makes a good profile. The AI-generated descriptions are a great starting point for users, but the company recommends that users review and edit the text for accuracy.

LinkedIn is also testing AI-written job descriptions, where hiring managers only need to fill out the job title, company name, and a few other basic details. LinkedIn will then generate a detailed draft of a relevant job description. These tools are designed to save users time, allowing them to offload some of the more tedious writing tasks associated with LinkedIn.

These writing tools are not LinkedIn’s first foray into generative AI. The company has also introduced “collaborative articles,” which combine AI-written text with contributions from individual LinkedIn experts. In addition, the company is adding new online courses focused on generative AI-related topics.

Overall, LinkedIn’s approach to AI is focused on enhancing the user experience by making it easier to create a compelling profile and job description. The tools are not meant to replace human input but rather to provide a starting point for users to build upon.

The platform has had to undertake a strong censorship process in compliance with current Chinese regulations. This has impacted its core mandate as a platform open to an array of users of different political and religious leanings. In a statement released on Thursday, October 14, the Seattle-headquartered company announced it was shutting down its professional networking service in China by the turn of the year. It expressed its difficulties in navigating the increasingly challenging operating environment amidst greater compliance requirements.

LinkedIn is not the first social networking platform to encounter serious challenges in China. Twitter and Facebook had been blocked from the country. LinkedIn has also stated that it will offer a new app for the Chinese market solely focused on job postings. This would seem a watered-down version of the original LinkedIn platform, as the new app will not have social networking functionalities such as sharing of posts and commenting. It remains to be seen how the Chinese audience will receive the new app and how successful it could be.

The trajectory of the development of Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has been proximately linked to the freedom of sharing and commenting on posts among users to engender robust discussions. This has been the case both in the United States and other jurisdictions where LinkedIn has been very successful as a key economic growth driver.

The decision by LinkedIn brings to the end of the chapter of its foray into the Chinese space in 2014. It began with a localized service that was to be pliant to government regulations. It agreed to censor posts made by users in China in line with extant Chinese laws, which was a strong departure from the stance of other American internet companies. It was an experiment that was primed for an underwhelming performance even from the outset.

Since then, LinkedIn had struggled to stay relevant in the country due to its adherence to the censorship requirements. Now it seems the bubble has burst, hence the decision to wind down its China service. It had also endured some stern rebukes from Chinese regulators for failing to control political content on the platform.

Some of the popular applications mentioned were TikTok, LinkedIn, Kuaishou, Microsoft’s Bing, and Kugou.

In a statement posted on its official WeChat account, the regulator said that it received complaints from users that prompted it to launch an investigation into the data collection activities of several apps. The CAC noted that 105 apps were, after the investigation, found to have violated extant privacy laws by collecting excessive personal information through illegal access. According to the CAC statement, the owners of the 105 apps are required to remedy the observed breaches within 15 days.

The Chinese internet watchdog says it will continue to scrutinize mobile applications for possible breaches regularly. The CAC approach comes on the heels of the recent new regulations that provide stricter monitoring and controls for the public’s overall safety. The crux of the new rules is that app providers are held accountable for collecting excessive user data unrelated to the app’s core services and forcing users to give uninformed consent to how their data are used. These regulations cover a wide range of mobile applications of different hues.

China continues to strengthen its laws and regulations to be responsive to the evolving technological space. Some major brands like Alibaba and Tencent have been fined heavily for observed breaches of the rules governing their operations and anti-monopoly laws. These new moves by the CAC will help shore up consumer confidence in the system and ensure mobile applications do not take undue advantage of users.
