According to a new report, Samsung‘s Galaxy S11 series will feature a major camera upgrade over its predecessors. The upcoming entry in the Galaxy flagship series is expected to arrive in both 4G and 5G variants and will feature a penta camera setup for the first time; A notable addition to which is the new Bright Night sensor.

The 5 camera module is expected to be equipped with a 108-megapixel primary shooter alongside a special Bright Night sensor. This seems to be a new camera sensor that will be specialized in lowlight photography and even night videography. It also marks Samsung’s departure from a software solution to a dedicated image sensor altogether.

The tech giant filed a trademark with EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) for the ‘Bright Night Sensor’. The name of this new sensor is similar to the ‘bright night shot mode’ found on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series. However, this time dedicated hardware can be found in the trademark description which also includes low light videography.

Smartphone manufacturers are pushing the boundaries for compact photography each year with their handset offerings. In recent times, smartphones perform quite well even in low light, with devices capturing more and more details and sharpness after each passing year. Apple’s iPhone 11 series, with great low light camera performance, is one such example. Hence, it is quite possible that Samsung is planning on innovating on the same aspect. Manufacturers have been providing software solutions like night mode for the past couple of years now, so a hardware inclusion is a welcomed new addition.

Yesterday, Samsung announced ISOCELL Dual, its total dual camera solution for entry level and mid-range devices. The camera solution brings flagship bokeh and low-light shooting to non-flagship smartphones.

What ISOCELL Dual does is to reduce the time it takes for OEMs to optimize camera sensors and the algorithm software required for the sensors. ISOCELL Dual is a combination of both the hardware and the sensor-optimization software. Think of it as a ready-to-use dual camera system.

For refocusing (bokeh) Samsung’s ISOCELL Dual will make use of one 13MP sensor and a 5MP sensor. On the other hand, low-light shooting will have two 8MP sensors. Depending on the one the OEM chooses, integration is supposed to be simple.

It is not much of a surprise that Samsung has provided a solution for non-flagship phones with dual cameras. After taking its time before joining the dual camera train itself, it has also come up with a solution for clients who use its sensors in their devices.

Samsung failed to mention which OEMs will make use of the technology and when we should expect to see it in the market. Nevertheless, we can be sure OEMs that do make use of it will not shy away from advertising it.
