<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lucid">Lucid Motors</a>, renowned for its premium <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</a>, is now steering towards a new horizon with a planned $50,000 electric car. This move positions the California-based company as a direct competitor to Tesla, especially targeting the mid-sized EV market dominated by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tesla-model-3">Tesla&#8217;s Model 3</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tesla-model-y">Model Y</a>.</p>

<h3>Lucid also used to be a battery company, and they are banking on that</h3>

<p>The transition from luxury to more affordable models is a common trajectory for budding car companies. Lucid, initially focusing on high-end EVs like the $80,000 Air sedan and the $249,000 Air Sapphire, is now eyeing the more populous segment of everyday family cars. This shift is significant, considering the company&#8217;s CEO, Peter Rawlinson&#8217;s announcement about competing in the high-volume family car market.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-1024x576.webp?x10805" alt="Lucid" class="wp-image-583280" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/lucid-sanctuaries.webp 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>One of Lucid&#8217;s potential advantages in this new venture is its expertise in <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/battery">battery</a> technology. Formerly a battery company, Lucid could leverage this knowledge to offer superior range in its upcoming models. This is crucial, as range remains a key deciding factor for many EV buyers.</p>

<p>Moreover, Lucid&#8217;s journey to more affordable EVs could benefit from lessons learned by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a>, particularly in quality control. Early Tesla models, like the Model 3 and Model Y, faced criticisms over minor quality issues. Lucid has the opportunity to ensure these issues are addressed in their models, thereby setting a new standard in EV build quality right from the start.</p>

<p>However, challenges remain. Lucid&#8217;s venture into this competitive market segment will not be easy, given the established presence of Tesla and other automakers. The company will need to balance affordability with quality and range to truly stand out.</p>

<p>As the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/electric-vehicles">electric vehicle </a>(EV) market continues to expand, Lucid Motors has taken a significant step by embracing the North American Charging Standard (<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/nacs">NACS</a>), a system initially developed by <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a>. Starting in 2025, Lucid&#8217;s electric cars in North America will transition from the Combined Charging System 1 (CCS1) to NACS. This move paves the way for Lucid car owners to access Tesla&#8217;s vast Supercharging network, which boasts over 15,000 charging stations.</p>

<h2>Tesla has confirmed that NACS can support upto 1000-volt systems </h2>

<p>The adoption of NACS by Lucid is a reflection of a broader industry trend, signaling a gradual phase-out of the CCS1 charging standard. Previously, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/lucid-motors">Lucid</a> had reservations about NACS, particularly regarding compatibility with their high-voltage battery systems. However, any such concerns have been resolved, and even brands with a focus on high-voltage systems are now aligning with NACS. Tesla has confirmed that NACS can support systems up to 1,000 volts, which is suitable for the fast-charging needs of modern EVs.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="512" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1024x512.png?x10805" alt="Lucid" class="wp-image-425639" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1024x512.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-300x150.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-768x384.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-696x348.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-1068x534.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min-840x420.png 840w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/lucid-air-2020-001-min.png 1500w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Peter Rawlinson, Lucid&#8217;s CEO, expressed that the integration of NACS is crucial for providing customers with more reliable and convenient charging options. He also emphasized the importance of a unified charging infrastructure to encourage EV adoption in the U.S.</p>

<p>The transition period until the shift in 2025 allows for the establishment of a more robust NACS-based charging network. SAE International is working to standardize the NACS connector, and various suppliers are expected to develop and offer compatible equipment, ensuring Tesla does not remain the only provider.</p>

<p>While Lucid has made its position clear, some major automakers like the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/volkswagen">Volkswagen</a> Group and Stellantis have not yet announced a switch to NACS, leaving a bit of uncertainty in the industry&#8217;s direction. Nevertheless, the future of EV charging in the U.S. seems to be consolidating around a single, high-voltage standard, which could be a game-changer for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.</p>

The company has put out a job listing for a Senior Product Manager who will work with <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/amazon-music">Amazon Music</a>, and other media app partners.</p>

<h3>Tesla has a similar feature with direct Apple Music/Spotify/Tidal integration</h3>

<p>This means drivers of the Air sedan and the upcoming Gravity SUV might soon be able to play their favorite songs with just the touch of a button. It&#8217;s a feature similar to what <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/tesla">Tesla </a>offers, with direct integration for <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple-music">Apple Music</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tidal">Tidal</a>, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/spotify">Spotify</a>, and more.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-1024x576.jpg?x10805" alt="Electric" class="wp-image-576506" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/lucid-ev-teaser.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>For those who already own a Lucid Air EV, you&#8217;ll know it comes with <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple-carplay">Apple CarPlay</a>, both wired and wireless, as a standard feature. So these new music apps would just add to the options you have for playing music in your car. Tesla owners, on the other hand, have to use Bluetooth or the streaming services we mentioned earlier.</p>

<p>In terms of what you&#8217;ll be listening to your music in, Lucid has a range of options. The Air EV starts at $78,900 for the Pure RWD version. This car has a single rear-mounted electric motor that gives you 430 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. That&#8217;s enough to go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds, with a top speed of 124 mph. The 88-kilowatt-hour Long Range battery pack gives you a range of up to 410 miles.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re looking for something a bit more high-end, you might be interested in the Air Sapphire. It&#8217;s priced at $249,000 and is powered by a 1,234 hp tri-motor setup. This makes it the most powerful production four-door sedan in history, according to Lucid. It goes from zero to 60 in just 1.89 seconds, with a top speed of 205 mph, beating out the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/tesla-model-s-plaid">Tesla Model S Plaid</a>. </p>

<p>The startup&#8217;s CEO Peter Rawlinson told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/16/lucid-motors-ceo-targeting-factory-expansion-in-china-middle-east.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>CNBC</em> </a>earlier this week that it plans on targeting its expansion in China and the middle east. This would even have it setup its EV factories in the Asian nation. For those unaware, Lucid Motors is a California based electric vehicle maker, with its flagship factory being in Casa Grande, Arizona. The company began production for its EV&#8217;s back in September 2021.</p>
<p>In an interview, the senior official said that &#8220;Mid decade, we plan to have plants in the Middle East and China as well.&#8221; As of right now, China is the world&#8217;s largest auto market, with electric vehicles also being a major segment in the industry. Back in 2019, Tesla had built its Gigafactory in the Shanghai, China to expand its presence in the region. With the auto giant&#8217;s arrival in the region, the competition in the local market heated up as Chinese startups like Xpeng, NIO, and Li Auto also launched their own EV offerings.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-425641 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air.jpg?x10805" alt="Tesla" width="1920" height="1005" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air.jpg 1920w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-300x157.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-768x402.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-696x364.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-1068x559.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Lucid_Air-802x420.jpg 802w" sizes="(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px" /></p>
<p>Now, it seems another American brand is entering the Chinese market. At the moment, Lucid Motors expects to make 20,000 of its Air sedans next year. Rawlinson further added that &#8220;We’re quadrupling the size of that factory in Arizona. We’re building out a 2.85 million square foot expansion to get ready to build 90,000 units per annum, and the site itself is with its phase three capable of nearly 400,000 units per annum.&#8221;</p>
