Apple may finally be preparing a lower-cost MacBook, and new details suggest it won’t just be a stripped-down MacBook Air. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is working on a more affordable model expected to debut around March 2026. The goal appears straightforward: bring the Mac experience to a lower price point without abandoning Apple’s typical build quality.

Pricing is rumored to land somewhere between $599 and $799, which would place it below the current MacBook Air lineup and closer to Chromebook territory.

An iPhone chip inside?

One of the more surprising details involves the processor. Instead of using an M-series chip, the new MacBook is expected to run on an A-series chip, reportedly the same Apple A18 Pro used in the iPhone 16 Pro. That would mark a major shift in Apple’s laptop strategy.

In theory, the A18 Pro should handle everyday tasks like web browsing, streaming, writing, and light productivity without issue. Rumors point to a roughly 12.9-inch IPS display, with brightness levels suitable for indoor use but probably not pushing flagship territory.

An order for payments was issued on June 27th, 2024, with eligible claimants receiving payouts by the end of August 2024.

The class-action lawsuit was filed in the US by May 2018

In March 2015, Apple introduced the ultra-thin 12-inch MacBook with a new butterfly keyboard design. While achieving a slim profile, this keyboard was plagued by issues like sticking keys, missed inputs, and letter repetitions. October 2016 saw the introduction of the second-generation butterfly keyboard in 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models. Users once again reported problems with sticky and unresponsive keys.

By May 2018, a class-action lawsuit was filed in the US, accusing Apple of being aware of the keyboard’s defects. In June 2018, Apple acknowledged a “small number” of users experiencing these issues and launched a worldwide keyboard service program for affected MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro models.

The compensation depends on the extent of repairs needed:

• Up to $395 for those who had their entire butterfly keyboard replaced more than twice.
• Up to $125 for users who replaced their butterfly keyboard once.
• Up to $50 for users who only needed keycap replacements.

Details about the device’s design are scarce, but it would surpass Apple’s current largest laptop, the 16-inch MacBook Pro, and potentially revive screen sizes similar to the discontinued 17-inch MacBook Pro.

While the exact form factor remains unknown, a foldable design could offer versatility. It might function as a traditional laptop when partially unfolded or offer an expansive display experience when completely open.

Low-cost MacBooks may launch next year to boost shipments

Kuo says that Apple has been experiencing a decline in MacBook shipments this year mainly due to the limited availability of the M2 processor. This is why the analyst also believes that Apple could proceed with the launch of the M3-powered MacBook Pros in spite of lower production volumes than the M2-powered models. The M3 chipset is expected to offer a significant computing performance upgrade. Apple hopes to leverage this to boost MacBook sales. And if the sales number still doesn’t lift up, there is a possibility that the Cupertino-based tech giant may introduce the MacBook Pro with an all-new design. 

Kuo says that Apple’s plans for an affordable low-cost MacBook may happen in between the efforts to lift up declining sales numbers. It could be a way to boost shipments. The company might target 8 to 10 million units per year. Apple hasn’t considered and may ditch the plans for an affordable MacBook. 

The previous report revealed that Apple’s affordable MacBook may compete against Chromebooks which have witnessed growth in recent years. The low-cost models will also be different from the current Air and Pro lineup. The Cupertino-based tech giant may target the education and budget segment.

Apple may be planning to launch new Macs in October 2023, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. In his weekly newsletter, Gurman said that iMacs, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro are in short supply, both online and in retail stores, which could be a sign that new models are coming soon.

Gurman also noted that Apple’s earnings call is scheduled for November 2, and the company has historically held a product launch event in October before its earnings call. So he suggests that Apple could announce new Macs on October 30 or 31.

It is unclear what specific new Macs Apple could release, but the iMac is due for an update. The current 24-inch iMac was launched in 2021 with the M1 chip, but it is possible that Apple will release a new iMac with the M2 chip.

As for the MacBook Pro, Apple released new 14-inch and 16-inch models in January 2023 with the M2 chip. It is unlikely that Apple will release new MacBook Pros so soon, but it is possible that the company may release updated models with minor improvements.

Gurman also revealed that next-generation MacBook Air models with M3 chips will not launch until early 2024 and that a larger “pro” version of the iMac with a 32-inch display and a new design is tabled for late 2024 or 2025.

Overall, it seems likely that Apple has at least one more product launch event planned for 2023. We will have to wait and see what specific Macs Apple announces, but it is sure to be exciting news for Mac fans.

Apple M3 MacBook Air & MacBook Pro Delayed

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently shared some information regarding the new MacBooks in his Power On newsletter. The report carried predictions for the Apple events in September and October. The Cupertino based giant will host a major launch conference for the iPhone, but the Macs might not get similar attention. M3 MacBooks will reportedly just be announced with a simple press release.

Mark Gurman stated in his newsletter, “The structure of the event, I’m told, will match the iPhone 14 launch: A prerecorded video will be shown online, as well as at an event at the company’s headquarters. There’s also another launch occurring in October — likely for the first M3 Macs — but it’s unclear if that will be positioned as a formal event.” Based on this, it appears that even an October launch timeline appears unlikely as well.

In the past, Apple didn’t introduce the M2-powered MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in special events. Similarly, the company skipped an October launch event in 2015, 2017, 2019, and event 2022. So it won’t be surprising that the company follows a similar move for the upcoming M3 MacBooks.

He adds that the device isn’t expected to debut until late 2024, so it won’t be among the first series of M3-powered Macs. Similarly, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are expected to launch sometime in the middle of 2024.

The first lineup of Mac devices powered by the new M3 chip is expected to get launched as early as October this year, including a 13-inch MacBook Pro, a 13-inch MacBook Air, and a 24-inch iMac.

The upcoming Apple M3 processor is expected to be manufactured by TSMC using its 3nm process, offering significant performance and power efficiency compared to the current-generation M2 chips made using a 5nm process.

The news will have important ramifications in the Korean market, as forecasts have been reviewed downwards. The Cupertino-based company is a heavy hitter and its decision could affect the OLED panel market expectations in Korea. Apple is believed to be however close to releasing an OLE panel iPad Pro in 2024. The iPad Pro will use LG-Samsung’s 6th-gen OLED technology.

The MacBook shipments have declined by up to 50% in the last two quarters. It is unclear whether Apple’s decision to halt the OLED upgrade is not unconnected with the slump in MacBook shipments. It is also not clear how the decision will also revive sagging MacBook sales. Unlike iPhones, Apple does not enjoy the same brand loyalty for its MacBook lineup. At present, these two companies have large production capacities and operate Gen 6 OLED production lines. However, they plan to set up more efficient Gen 8 production lines that produce a higher number of OLED panels per substrate. Recent information has revealed that the Korean manufacturers are hesitant. Allegedly, Samsung and LG have not yet ordered the necessary equipment to construct the Gen 8 lines, which require at least a year to complete. This situation indicates that the manufacturers’ reluctance to invest stems from concerns over profitability.

The main cause for concern is the decline in Apple’s sales. Despite the success of the M series processors, Apple disclosed a significant year-over-year decrease in Mac revenue, dropping from $10.4 billion to $7.2 billion. If this decline continues, investing in large production capacities could have negative consequences for LG Display and Samsung Display.

Additionally, it is unclear whether Apple will be willing to pay for the OLED panels, especially since there is no precedent for their inclusion in MacBooks. So there will be no M3 Macs and no M3 iPads this year.”

TSMC is currently responsible for manufacturing Apple’s 3nm A17 chips for the iPhone 15 Pro models. They are also working on the Mac-series “M3” chips, which utilize the same 3nm process. The 15-inch MacBook Air could be one of the most controversial devices in internet history. Rumors about this laptop emerge before almost every Apple event, but it never materializes. However, Mark Gurman, a well-respected figure in the tech press known for Apple leaks, has once again ignited hopes for the “legendary” product.

According to Gurman, during Apple’s WWDC 2023 event, the company will introduce a new laptop alongside iOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, and the eagerly awaited mixed reality headset. This 15-inch MacBook Air will come with the M2 processor, just like the 13-inch model, and will have various GPU configurations. Unfortunately, that’s all the information available about the device. It is not known what other features it will have or how it will differ from the standard model besides screen size.

If we were to make a simple guess, we could say there might be a difference in screen resolution to maintain the PPI ratio. Considering how small the MagicBoard is, which houses all the hardware components of MacBooks, we could potentially see a significant improvement in battery life. In fact, the 15-inch MacBook Air could become the laptop model with the longest battery life of all time, thanks to its low power consumption and large battery. However, all of this is just speculation at this point.

As a user of a 13.3-inch M1 MacBook Air, I personally prefer smaller laptops. Portability is the most important feature for me in a computer. However, I’m sure some users would appreciate a larger screenl. Still, it’s worth noting that the long-standing rumors may not go beyond just being rumors at this event as well.

Apple is reportedly in discussions with suppliers to establish new manufacturing facilities in Thailand to produce Macbooks. This decision is in line with Apple’s strategy to gradually reduce its dependence on China and increase its footprint in other Asian nations, given the ongoing trade conflict between the US and China.

This news originates from Thailand’s suppliers, who are currently collaborating with Apple to manufacture the Apple Watch. The suppliers who are in discussions with Apple already possess established manufacturing facilities in Thailand that are utilized by other brands. They are currently in talks with Apple to establish a distinct assembly and production line in their factories to manufacture Macbooks.

According to some suppliers, they have begun constructing production facilities in Thailand for Apple’s MacBook, with an expected completion date by the end of this year. Initially, Apple had requested the establishment of new factories in Vietnam, but these suppliers proposed using existing spaces in Thailand instead. One of the suppliers stated that although Apple had approached them regarding setting up a plant in Vietnam, they presented a better alternative of utilizing their extensive space and production capabilities in Thailand. 

The suppliers further stated that though MacBook assemblies happen in Vietnam, some of the components could be supplied from the Thailand plant. Also, suppliers have assured Apple the logistics and customs clearance would take no more than three days. 

Why choose Thailand?

Apple is planning to move away from China to avoid the pressure from the ongoing US-China trade sanctions. The company is planning to set up Vietnam as its base in Asia and is already producing iPads and Airpods in the country. 

However, Thailand also looks like a plausible choice as the country offers a highly competitive manufacturing market with abundant raw materials, low-cost labor, and innovative technologies.

Moreover, the Thai government also encourages the manufacturing sector as it accounts for the majority of Thailand’s total exports and generates a large volume of jobs, amounting to almost six million workers in 2021 alone. As of the fourth quarter of 2021, the share of the manufacturing sector in the Thai economic contribution was 34%, preceding other major industries like service and trade.

Why are brands leaving China?

During the 1990s, when globalization became popular countries across the world started offshoring their manufacturing and service industries to nations that offered low-cost and cheap labor and resources. China topped the list of offshore nations and blossomed into a global manufacturing hub as it presented the perfect blend of a skilled labor force and a prospering middle class interested in purchasing Western products, making it an ideal choice for both manufacturing and marketing. 

However, due to the US-China trade war, companies are now trying to move their production to friendly countries where they don’t need to worry about getting caught in the geopolitical line of fire. 

Apple has already begun shifting its base from China to Vietnam and India. Many famous brands like Samsung, Hasbro, Volvo, Adidas, and more have shifted their major base from China to Vietnam and other countries.

While all five of the largest computer makers, including Apple, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, witnessed double-digit drops in first-quarter shipments due to weaker demand and ongoing inventory challenges, Apple’s decline was the most significant among them. This downturn was not entirely unexpected, as Apple CFO Luca Maestri had anticipated double-digit declines in Mac and iPad sales for the March quarter.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also acknowledged that the challenging macroeconomic environment had negatively impacted iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch sales. Probably the current drop in shipments marks the end of the COVID-driven demand era, signaling a temporary return to pre-pandemic patterns. Despite heavy discounting, IDC researcher Jitesh Ubrani expects elevated inventory levels to persist until the middle of the year, and potentially into the third quarter.

While PC manufacturers are expected to struggle in the short term, IDC anticipates growth to rebound by the end of the year. The weakened demand presents an opportunity for PC manufacturers to reevaluate their plans and address supply chain issues. It’s been some time since we heard rumors about Apple working on a larger MacBook Air, putting it on par with the Pro model when it comes to display panels. Now, it looks like Apple MacBook Air 15-inch model is all set to get launched in the coming months.

As per the latest report from Ross Young, the company has bumped up the production as per the plans. He adds that the panel production for the device started in February and increased in March, and now it has been increased again.

He expects the MacBook Air 15-inch model to go official in late April or early May. However, it appears a bit early, and we speculate the device to get announced during WWDC, and the market availability could be a couple of weeks or months after the announcement.

It appears that the company isn’t planning for a Spring event this time; otherwise, that was also an option to reveal this new laptop. Now, an announcement in the month of June during the Worldwide Developers Conference looks more likely.

As for the design, it is expected to be similar to the M2-powered Apple MacBook Air. The laptop is said to feature a 15.5-inch display panel, similar to the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro, which has now been discontinued. Apple M3 for MacBook Air and Future iPad Pro Models Rumored to Use TSMC’s Advanced N3E Process

TSMC’s N3E process is believed to be an improved iteration of the N3, which could be used for the A17 Bionic. Apple is rumored to be going solo on its 3nm journey, with a report from China Times suggesting that the iPhone maker has ordered TSMC’s entire supply of the advanced manufacturing process. This means that Apple will be the first company in the world to release a system-on-a-chip (SoC) based on this cutting-edge technology.

Previous rumors suggested that the A17 Bionic and M3 chipsets would be fabricated on TSMC’s 3nm, or N3 process. However, the new report indicates that the M3 SoC for Apple’s ARM-powered notebooks will be made using the N3E process. This could result in slightly better performance and power efficiency compared to the regular N3 process.

There has been some confusion around TSMC’s naming schemes and the exact process that Apple will use for its upcoming M3 and A17 Bionic chips. Apple had recently announced that it had plans to increase the price for battery replacements for a number of its mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks. And now, it appears that this change has finally been rolled out.

The Cupertino based giant had first announced the battery replacement cost rise back in February. These changes would’ve affected its popular smartphone, tablets, and notebook lineup. Now, the brand is apparently rolling out the new price update across the globe. If this news is true, it marks the second time the iPhone maker has hiked the battery replacement prices since September of last year.

According to a new report, there are multiple tiers to the battery replacement pricing that will now go live starting this month. This change will not only be for the US market, but will also include the global markets. As of right now, the battery replacement for the iPhone 14 series will cost around 99 US Dollars across the lineup. On the other hand, the iPhone 5 to iPhone 8 will have battery change cost around 69 US Dollars, which is up from 49 US Dollars.

Similarly, the iPhone X to iPhone 13 series will see a price hike from 69 US Dollars for battery replacements to 89 US Dollars. Meanwhile, the price hike for replacing the battery on the MacBook will range from 30 US Dollars for the Air model (from 129 US Dollars to 159 US Dollars) to 50 US Dollars (from 199 US Dollars to 249 US Dollars) on the Pro and base models. Lastly, the iPads are also seeing a rise replacements costs, but it does not affect every model. The price hike can range from 20 US Dollars on older Pro, mini, and Air variants, while the base iPad has seen a sizeable jump from 99 US Dollars to 199 US Dollars.

The event was held at a dedicated venue in New York City where the company occasionally organizes private briefings with members of the press to offer demonstrations and presentations of new products. However, the focus of this event was entirely gaming, with various game developers presenting their product roadmaps for Apple platforms in 2023.

Some of the games showcased at Apple’s event include Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Honkai: Star Rail, Lego Star Wars Castaways, Run Legends, and The Medium. Mike Andronico, a writer for CNN, remarked that “2023 is looking like a great time to be an Apple gamer.” He was impressed by Call of Duty: Warzone, which is set to release on iPhone later this year. He shared that “Activision’s latest bite-sized Call of Duty game looked great and ran at a fluid 120 frames per second on an iPhone 14 Pro Max.” The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the company’s flagship smartphone, which features the A16 bionic chip. Mike did however point out that the device became a little warm during his playtime. Also, the game crashed towards the end of his gaming session. In response, Activision stated that all of it was pre-release software, so hopefully, these bugs will be fixed in the not-so-distant future to avoid any hiccups.

Apple also showcased The Medium running on a new M2 Mac mini, which impressed Mike, who stated that the game looked as good as if it was running on a specced-out gaming PC with an RTX 3080 graphics card. He also added that the game ran at an immersive 4K resolution and at least 60 frames per second, apart from some occasional stuttering during intense gameplay sequences. The company highlighted that the game has been tested on both M1 and M2-powered Macs, and should run well on even the basic 2020 MacBook Air. 

It’s interesting to note that Apple has been leaning more and more towards gaming since the company transitioned to Apple Silicon. Apple has begun advertising the Mac as a gaming platform, alongside its continued focus on games for the iPhone and iPad. All that remains now is to see what Apple’s plans for gaming look like down the road.

Tech giant Microsoft has announced a new way to run Windows 11 on ARM-based Macs, albeit with some restrictions. In an official support article, Microsoft has authorized the use of Parallels Desktop 18 to run the ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise on M1– and M2-based Macs. Although this is great news for those who need to use Windows for work, users should be aware of some limitations.

For one, you won’t be able to run 32-bit ARM apps since Microsoft is phasing out 32-bit software for all ARM Windows builds. Furthermore, you’ll need Windows 11 ARM drivers for devices to work properly. Additionally, users won’t be able to use anything that relies on another layer of virtualization, such as Android applications, the Linux subsystem, and Windows Sandbox. Lastly, games that require at least DirectX 12 or OpenGL 3.3 won’t work at all. 

In 2021, it was possible to run Windows 11 in Parallels on ARM Macs, but users needed to use an Insider preview of the OS at the time. However, with the sanctioned approach, users can download and install Windows 11 with ease on Parallels Desktop 18. This will ease a lot of tension around licensing for the company, but it’s still unclear how these changes will affect Microsoft. 

This news won’t be too useful for users who want native Windows support like they had with Intel-based Macs running Apple’s Boot Camp. However, it might be the closest thing to a collaboration between Apple and Microsoft, and it may be a viable solution for those who absolutely need to use Windows productivity apps. While it won’t offer the same performance or compatibility as a PC built for Windows on ARM, it’s the most viable option for those who need to use Windows on their ARM-based Mac.

The iPhone with USB-C, which has been the subject of discussion for years, is coming true. Apple, which has been using USB-C instead of Lightning in its MacBook and iPad models for some time, is finally incorporating the change into its smartphones. So, now that we no longer have to use Lightning, we should be able to use any accessory or product we desire with our phone, correct? Accessory maker staff confirms latest Apple iOS update encrypts USB-C on iPads and Macs

Rumors that emerged recently suggest that the USB-C port and charging cables on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro will feature a Lightning-like authenticator chip. Lastly, the technical staff at FiiO confirmed that the latest iOS system has encrypted the USB-C port of their devices, causing restrictions for non-certified accessories.

The staff advises not updating the device software for now to ensure compatibility with accessories. In the future, only certified accessories will have full access to the USB-C port, potentially causing non-certified accessories to not work with the latest iPhones. This move by Apple is seen as a way to control the quality of accessories used with their devices. Unfortunately, this is not the only negative development.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds, the same as Lightning. Fortunately, this will not be the case with the iPhone 15 Pro series.
