What Is PixelSnap?

Simply put, PixelSnap is Google’s new magnetic hardware platform exclusive to the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This feature brings magnets embedded into the new Pixels, which allows users to “snap” their phone onto wireless charging, stands, and slap on other kinds of accessories. One could argue that we are finally getting Apple’s MagSafe on Android, but PixelSnap also brings open Qi2 (and Qi2.2) wireless charging standard.

Qi2 Wireless Charging

PixelSnap leverages the Qi2 wireless charging protocol, which is the next gen wireless charging standard. Qi2 basically adds magnetic alignment for accurate, optimal charging, while also bringing cross-compatibility with Apple MagSafe accessories and other future Qi2 certified add ons. Wireless charging now becomes truly effortless as the users can drop the Pixel 10 onto any PixelSnap charger or stand, and magnetic alignment starts the charge securely every time.

This reduces frustration with misaligned wireless pads. To recall, Google brings Qi2 on the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold with 15W wireless charging support. On the other hand, the flagship Pixel 10 Pro XL brings support for Qi2.2 standard with a faster 25W wireless charging.

Magnetic Accessories

Wireless charging is not replacing wired charging anytime soon, and is still just a convenient alternative. However, many still don’t rely on this technology on a day-to-day basis. Oppo and OnePlus took advantage of certain cases to launch some magnetic accessories in the recent past, but a fresh report claims that the next-gen smartphones might feature this technology without needing a special protective cover.

Future OnePlus & Oppo Phones May Support Magnetic Wireless Charging

The news arrives from known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, who shared the details on Weibo. In the online post, he claimed that Oppo (and likely OnePlus) is developing true magnetic wireless charging for its future devices. The Oppo Mag (vs MagSafe) line of accessories released in China was only compatible with cases with built-in magnets, but future models would house it within their chassis.

This technology will likely make its debut in premium next-gen smartphones like the OnePlus 15 or the Oppo Find X9 series. DCS further adds that Oppo is working on the technology with a new design that will allow it to avoid Apple’s MagSafe patent. But regardless of how it sounds, it won’t be compatible with actual MagSafe compatible accessories from Apple or third party sellers like Anker.

The tipster stated that the source close to the matter said that this technology will take up space in the internals, causing a slight shrinkage in battery size. But this is where the silicon carbide (SiC) battery tech comes in. Oppo would’ve been able to pack a massive 6,800mAh or 7,000mAh battery pack without this magnetic tech. So the capacity might not push the ludicrous figures in next gen models.

OnePlus 13 Magnetic Cases

One of the notable upgrades of the OnePlus 13 was the inclusion of magnetic wireless charging. So the brand released special cases that support Magnetic Charging. All of these cases were designed to be slim, to help avoid adding too much bulk to the premium phone.

There are four variants in total, but only three are available in India. This includes the Aramid Fiber, Wood Grain (Wood Black), and Sandstone cases. The Wood Brown variant of Wood Brown is only available in the US. The Sandstone case costs Rs 1,299 in India, while the Wood Grain, and Aramid Fiber cases have a Rs 2,299 and Rs 2,499 price tag respectively.

Alongside these cases, OnePlus officially unveiled the AirVOOC 50W Magnetic Charger. The wireless charger provides fast and efficient magnetic functions. Thanks to the 50W wireless charging support, the OnePlus 13 can charge to full in about 75 minutes. Apple did it first but Oppo did it better

This is one of the few occasions where Android smartphones actually take inspiration from iPhones. Apple debuted MagSafe to make wireless charging more intuitive thanks to magnets. Now, Oppo is taking this technology a step further. In our comparison with MagSafe, I talked about how the MagSafe has better compatibility overall since it’s a seasoned feature in the Apple ecosystem. However, Oppo blows the competition out of the water with charging speeds.

Both OnePlus and Oppo have launched new accessories alongside their latest flagship smartphones that offer a faster charging rate. To recall, the Oppo AirVOOC 50W Magnetic Power Bank launched with 50W charging, which is a lot more faster than Apple’s MagSafe which supports 15W for iPhones.

Big Battery in a Slim Form Factor

The Oppo Magnetic Power Bank was launched with a large 5,000mAh capacity. But it is also known as the Magnetic Energy Card power bank. This is thanks to its ultra slim form factor. So one can slap on the Magnetic Power bank via a wireless charging pad that could attach to the back of Oppo’s new Find X8 series. Other notable features include the temperature monitoring and LED indicator lights to show the remaining power levels.

Furthermore, these new charging accessories are built using a compact silver aluminum alloy casing, which measures just 120 grams in weight and 8.8mm in thickness. This makes it slim enough for buyers to carry it in their wallets or pockets, moving away from bulky power banks that are as hefty as bricks.

So what does this mean for wireless charging on smartphones?

If more brands adopt magnetic charging technology, it won’t be long for wireless charging to become more viable. As of right now, you typically charge smartphones wirelessly by placing them on a wireless charging pad or a wireless charging dock. But the wireless charging game could change forever with this technology.

You won’t need to carry a hefty power bank, since there is now a lightweight wireless power bank card that can be attached to the back of your smartphone. This has been one of the biggest complaints with wireless charging since it doesn’t practically offer any major benefits over wired fast charging, which is more efficient, faster, and even more flexible at times.

This tech also debuted with the Find X8 series, so it is only supported by flagship Oppo and OnePlus branded smartphones. Unfortunately, it isn’t a long list either as only the Find X8 series and OnePlus 13 feature Magnetic wireless charging.

Charging Speeds

Where it lacks in accessibility, it more than makes up for in terms of charging rates. MagSafe charging does not offer fast charging speeds, supporting just 15W wireless charging for MagSafe compatible Apple products. Meanwhile, Oppo and OnePlus are gearing up to unveil magnetic charging accessories that offer 50W wireless charging speeds.

There is even an 80W Magnetic Power Bank, although it’s unclear if this includes wireless charging. Oppo’s new Find X8 series arrives with 50W wireless charging support, so you’re new phones will be charging a lot more faster.

3rd Party Support

Oppo has only now released smartphones that support Magnetic wireless charging technology on its products. In other words, there aren’t a lot of third party accessories that you can find in the market right now. Apple’s devices have supported these for some time now and there are plenty of brands that make third party accessories. This includes popular companies like Anker, who sells accessories for iPhones.

Conclusion

Both magnetic charging technologies practically function identically. However, Apple has some clear advantages with wider support and better accessibility. iPhone is one of the most popular series of smartphones, making MagSafe great for people in the Apple ecosystem. Oppo’s magnetic charging is new and isn’t widely supported right now. But soon Oppo would pull ahead with future launches and third party launches.

The Chinese tech giant revealed three distinct accessories that support magnetic wireless charging technology, which is an anticipated feature on upcoming flagship smartphones. The first one that was teased is the new Oppo Mag Case, which is a protective cover that supports Magnetic Charging. In the video teaser, Oppo also teased the AirVOOC 50W Magnetic Charger along with the 80W Magnetic Power Bank as well.

Thanks to the Magnetic Charging support, users can even attack the power bank to the back of the Oppo Find X8 series phone even as it has the Mag Case on. Recently, the company also teased another 120W SuperVOOC dual port charging brick and another power bank. So these will likely launch alongside the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro, which are set to launch in China soon.

Looking at the video, the Mag Case can be seen in multiple color options. This includes White, Black, Blue, and Pink. For those unaware, the Oppo Find X8 lineup is confirmed to launch with the Dimensity 9400 SoC on 24th October 2024. Xiaomi 15

While wireless charging has been a thing for some time now on Android phones, the magnetic charging coils would be a new addition. Apple is best known for this technology, but Oppo, OnePlus, and Xiaomi may be the first to introduce such technology to Android phones.

Realme had recently announced that it would be launching its first smartphone that would support magnetic charging. But prior to its launch, the company’s CEO shared new teasers of the upcoming MagDart magnetic chargers, which states that it is faster and thinner than the Apple MagSafe chargers.

The teasers were shared Madhav Sheth, CEO of the Chinese smartphone maker on Twitter. In one of the teaser image poster, the company states that the MagDart chargers will be up to 440 percent faster in charging rates. However, the brand does not specify its reference point. Furthermore, it also teases that its new magnetic chargers will also be thinner, being “Slim as Coin, Powerful As Thunder.”

Notably, this is the first official confirmation from the brand regarding a thin variant of its MagDart lineup since we had first reported on the two upcoming MagDart chargers. Although, going by the 440 percent faster charging rates, we can assume that the larger and more beefier variant would be the one to offer fast charging speeds of around 66W. Realme would also be the first Android handset manufacturer to launch a commercial device with magnetic charger support. So this could be a huge milestone for the company as well.

Realme is working on a magnetic charger named Realme MagDart and a few days back, GizmoChina exclusively shared images of this upcoming magnetic wireless charger from the Chinese firm that is expected to launch soon.

Earlier today, the company hinted at the launch of a new smartphone in the Indian market with the tagline “Coming in a flash.” Now, a new report has revealed that the phone will be called Realme Flash.

Not just that, the report also claims that this will be the first Android smartphone in the world to come with support for magnetic charging, thanks to the support for the Realme MagDart, which is also expected to launch alongside this new phone.

As for the smartphone, the Realme Flash will reportedly come with a curved screen featuring a punch-hole cutout in the top-left corner for housing the front-facing camera. Underneath, it is expected to packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset with 12GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. On the back panel, the phone will feature a triple-camera setup and is expected to come running Android 11-based Realme UI on top.

Realme is currently working on at least two different versions of MagDart chargers. One of them appears to have a slim profile while the other one is bulkier. The slimmer version is said to offer 15W wireless charging. The bulker version could have over 15W charging support as the company is touting the technology to be the world’s fastest when it comes to magnetic charging capabilities.

Similar to the Apple MagSafe technology, the Realme MagDart can be attached to the smartphone’s back panel to start charging. The bulkier version of the upcoming magnetic charger from Realme seems to have a fan to keep the temperature in control.
