It is dubbed the Real time Kinetic Positioning (RKP), which enables smartphone navigation to be more accurate within a one meter distance radius. This is a highly accurate reading and could offer a lot more precise reading in various scenarios.

According to a GizArena report, the new positioning technology is based on carrier phase measurement. In simpler terms, the algorithm maps users’ locations by measuring the distance between network stations in real time to deliver a precise reading. This system isn’t exactly new, since it was originally used at an industrial level that used a large and complex system. Thus, it wasn’t suitable for smartphones at that time.

But now, Oppo has developed an advanced algorithm that uses information from existing smartphone sensors, including the accelerometers and gyroscopes, to improve positioning accuracy. Another benefit of this system is the reduction of signal interference. At the moment, the Chinese tech giant’s proprietary technology is in the commercializing phase, so we can expect to see it arrive in future Oppo smartphones in 2021.

Huawei also included Location Kit and Map Kit in HMS Core (its collection of tools for app developers) to provide location and mapping services but there was no mapping data to use. A report by Reuters says the Chinese mobile giant has partnered with TomTom, the Dutch company known for its mapping services.

The info was revealed by Remco Meerstra, the spokesman for TomTom. Apparently, the deal was finalized a while ago but they decided to keep a tight lid on it until now. The deal will result in Huawei’s use of TomTom’s mapping services, traffic information, and navigation software in its apps, and thus serving as an alternative to Google Maps.

The upcoming Huawei P40 series should have the new mapping service pre-installed. Other models may get the feature via an update.
