Hence, TSMC was unable to produce <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-9000">Kirin 9000</a> and other Kirin chipsets for the Chinese company. It was recently reported that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/05/qualcomm-applies-license-chipset-supply-huawei/">Qualcomm has confirmed</a> applying for a license to supply chipsets to Huawei. A fresh report by China’s <a href="https://36kr.com/p/956107893651845">36k.com</a> publication (via <a href="https://news.mydrivers.com/1/723/723421.htm">MyDrivers</a>) has claimed that <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> has been granted permission.</p>
<p>Huawei is known for using the homegrown Kirin chipsets to power its smartphones. The Chinese firm did not manufacture the chipsets, but it only designs semiconductors through its HiSilicon division. The actual manufacturing is carried out by TSMC. Since TSMC make use of US-made equipment for manufacturing those chipsets, it was stopped from doing business with Huawei. Hence, in August, Huawei Consumer Business CEO, Yu Richard <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/07/huawei-mate40-last-flagship-kirin-chipset/">claimed that the Mate 40 series could be the last Kirin SoC powered phones</a> from the brand.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-268731" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="650" height="400" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19.jpg 650w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-300x185.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/9sjoum0c_huawei-logo-afp_625x300_07_March_19-356x220.jpg 356w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></p>

<p>Recent reports have revealed that companies like Intel, AMD, Samsung Display, Sony, and others have been granted permission by the U.S. government to continue business with Huawei. Hence, there can be a possibility that TSMC may resume making chips for Huawei. Meanwhile, it appears that Qualcomm will supply chips to the Chinese firm.</p>
<p>According to the Chinese publication, a source close to Huawei has said that Qualcomm has already bagged a license to supply chips to Huawei. If TSMC is unable to do business with Huawei, its high-end lineup such as P-series and Mate-series could be fueled by flagship Snapdragon chipsets. There is a possibility that the Huawei P50 series arriving in Q1 could be driven by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/snapdragon-875">Snapdragon 875</a> chipset.</p>
<p>There is a high demand for the recently announced Mate 40 series. However, it is mainly because of the limited availability of the Kirin 9000 chips, Huawei is reportedly <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/11/06/huawei-mate-40-pro-supply-chain-issues">unable to manufacture</a> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-40-pro">Mate 40 Pro</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-40-pro-plus">Mate 40 Pro Plus</a> smartphones. Hence, there are speculations that the company may temporarily sell Snapdragon 875 powered Mate 40 models.</p>
<p>Apart from Snapdragon chips, Huawei is also expected to launch <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> powered phones in the absence of Kirin chips. It was reported last week that Huawei managed to secure a big stock of MediaTek’s Dimensity chipsets before September.</p>

<p>Recently, Huawei had released an official teaser promotional image in China. It offered a glimpse of the device as a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/14/huawei-mate-40-series-official-poster-reveals-octagonal-camera-module/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">silhouette with an octagonal shaped rear camera module</a>. This image was probably for one of the higher end Pro variants that house six cameras on the rear.</p>

The poster reveals that it will be sporting a unique octagon-shaped camera housing. Interestingly, the rear design of the Mate 40 series seems to match with a design patent that was published by the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration) in September.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347833" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="1080" height="1920" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design.jpg 1080w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-768x1365.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-576x1024.jpg 576w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-696x1237.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-1068x1899.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-Mate-40-rear-design-236x420.jpg 236w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /> The silhouette of the Mate 40 series shows that it will be the first brand to feature an octagonal camera housing. It appears that the other rumored devices in the lineup such as the Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+, and Mate 40 RS Porsche Design could also be sporting the same camera design. The poster also reveals a volume rocker and an orange-colored power button.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;">Editor&#8217;s Pick:  <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/13/huawei-tipped-to-launch-the-mate-30-pro-e-alongside-the-mate-40-series-on-october-22/">Huawei tipped to launch the Mate 30 Pro E alongside the Mate 40 series on October 22</a></div></div></strong></h4>
<p><em><a href="https://news.mydrivers.com/1/717/717912.htm">MyDrivers</a> </em>reported that some netizens overlapped the poster with a mirrored image, and it revealed a complete octagon camera housing. It is unclear how many cameras will be available on the vanilla Mate 40, but there are speculations that the Mate 40 Pro could be flaunting a penta-lens camera setup.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347834" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/HUawei-Mate-40-first-official-poster-reversed.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate 40 series first official poster reversed" width="600" height="1066" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/HUawei-Mate-40-first-official-poster-reversed.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/HUawei-Mate-40-first-official-poster-reversed-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/HUawei-Mate-40-first-official-poster-reversed-576x1024.jpg 576w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/HUawei-Mate-40-first-official-poster-reversed-236x420.jpg 236w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>Last month, <em><a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/huawei-camera-telefoon/">LetsGoDigital</a> </em>reported that a design patent for a full-screen smartphone equipped with an octagonal camera housing was filed with CNIPA on Sept. 11. The following render was shared by the publication on the basis of the schematics found in the patent filings. It appears that the Mate 40 series will sport the same design.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-347835" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei patent design" width="1024" height="764" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-300x224.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-768x573.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-80x60.jpg 80w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-265x198.jpg 265w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-696x519.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Huawei-patent-design-563x420.jpg 563w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>The design patent reveals that the phone is equipped with an edge-to-edge display with an under-screen selfie camera and it has an octagonal camera module, and it has as many as five cameras. Reports have claimed that the Mate 40 series are <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/30/huawei-mate-40-will-not-feature-an-under-display-camera/">unlikely to feature an under-display selfie camera</a>. Leaks have claimed that the Mate 40 series will have a <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/25/alleged-huawei-mate-40-pro-images-leak/">curved edge display with a dual punch-hole design</a>.</p>

<p>Apple recently unveiled the Apple A14 Bionic as the world’s first 5nm chipset. The publication revealed that Huawei will be the first brand to launch a 5nm chipset with a built-in 5G modem. The 5nm Kirin 9000 with 5G support is expected to power the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-341270" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak.jpg?x10805" alt="Mate 40 series front camera leak" width="644" height="150" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak.jpg 644w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak-300x70.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px" /></p>
<p>The tipster has claimed that the Mate 40’s flagship lineup will include three handsets namely, the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, and Mate 40 Pro+. He has learned from the supply chain sources that the Mate 40 will have a single camera on the front.</p>
<p>As far as the Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+ are concerned, these phones are likely to sport pill-shaped cutout on their displays for housing dual selfie cameras. The dual selfie setup of the Mate 40 Pro models will include a Sony IMX588 camera and a Sony IMX516, which is a ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensor.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-341269" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak-1.jpg?x10805" alt="Mate 40 series front camera leak 1" width="646" height="126" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak-1.jpg 646w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mate-40-series-front-camera-leak-1-300x59.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 646px) 100vw, 646px" /></p>
<h4 style="text-align: center"><strong><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;">Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/08/huawei-matepad-t8-launched-in-india-starts-at-rs-9999-135/">Huawei MatePad T8 launched in India, starts at Rs 9,999 (~$135)</a></div></div></strong></h4>
<p>The tipster also revealed that the Huawei Mate 40 series has a Sony IMX700 lens. It is a 50-megapixel sensor that Honor had offered on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/honor+30+pro+plus">Honor 30 Pro+</a> flagship phones. A recent leak had revealed the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/27/huawei-mate-40-mate-40-pro-rear-design-revealed-through-case-images/">rear camera design</a> of the Mate 40 Pro. It had shown that it will have <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/18/huawei-mate40-pro-camera-module-leak/">a circular camera module</a>. Reports have claimed that the Mate 40 Pro will have a quad-camera system, whereas the Mate 40 will have triple rear cameras.</p>

<p>It is speculated that the Huawei Mate 40 will be driven by the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/07/leak-huawei-will-release-kirin-9000-and-kirin-9000e-processors/">Kirin 9000E and Kirin 9000 chipsets</a>. Probably, the vanilla model will be equipped with Kirin 9000E which is said is to be a more powerful version of the Kirin 990 5G. The Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+ could be featuring the fully upgraded Kirin 9000 SoC. It is still unclear whether Huawei will be announcing the Mate 40 series in this month or October. A report from last month had claimed that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/03/report-huawei-mate40-series-four-models-launch-delayed-late-october/">Mate 40 series may break cover next month.</a></p>

At the same time, display analyst Ross Young has shared some key information on the displays of the three phones.</p>
<p>It is believed that the OCE-AN00 model number belongs to the Huawei Mate 40 handset. The letters ‘OCE’ refers to its ‘Ocean’ codename. The NOH-AN00 Huawei phone could be the Mate 40 Pro smartphone. The ‘NOH’ letters in the model number are the short form of its “Noah’ codename.</p>

<p>The NOP-AN00 phone also seems to belong to the Mate 40 series. It is unclear whether the phone is Mate 40 Pro+ or Mate 40 RS Porsche Design. Hopefully, newer reports will reveal the identity of the NOP-AN00 phone. Unfortunately, the TENAA listings of these phones do not have any information on their specs, except for the fact that they support 5G connectivity and run on Android. These listings are expected to get updated with full specs soon.</p>

<p>In June, display analyst and CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), Ross Young had claimed that the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/18/huawei-mate-40-to-feature-120hz-refresh-rate-display-report/">Mate 40 will come with a 120Hz refresh rate display</a>. However, a tipster claimed at the end of the same month that the Mate 40 series will <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/29/huawei-mate-40-series-may-feature-90hz-display-and-not-120hz-as-reported-earlier/">support a 90Hz refresh rate</a> like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-p40">Huawei P40</a> series. Now, even <a href="https://twitter.com/DSCCRoss/status/1296840024999124992">Young has claimed</a> that the Mate 40 series phones will have 90Hz refresh rate displays. He is of the view that Huawei will offer 120Hz refresh rate displays on its smartphones in the coming year.</p>
