Last week was packed full of important announcements that included new partnerships and several new products. Here is a roundup of the top stories from last week:

OnePlus confirms partnership with Hasselblad, announces launch dates for OnePlus 9 series

OnePlus officially confirmed its partnership with Swedish camera manufacturer, Hasselblad. The three-year partnership will see both companies develop imaging solutions for OnePlus phones. OnePlus also announced that it is investing $150 million in research and development which will include the setting up of two imaging labs in Japan and the United States.

It was also announced that the OnePlus 9 series will be announced globally on March 23 and in China on March 24.

New Xiaomi Mi 10 and Huawei Mate 40 phones

Last week, Xiaomi and Huawei announced new models for their flagship series from last year. Xiaomi announced the Mi 10S, a Snapdragon 870-powered phone with the design of the Mi 10 Ultra and slightly upgraded features from the Mi 10 5G.

Huawei, on the other hand, announced the Mate 40E, which is a less-powerful version of the Mate 40. It comes with the Kirin 990E processor and also swaps the 50MP main rear camera of the Mate 40 for a 64MP sensor.

ROG Phone 5 – first phone with 18GB of RAM

ASUS announced the ROG Phone 5 series last week. Available in three models including an Ultimate edition with up to 18GB of RAM, the ROG Phone 5 sets a new standard not only for gaming phones but for the smartphone industry at large.

OPPO makes a big splash with the Find X3 series

OPPO announced the Find X3 series last week at two simultaneous events for the global market and Chinese market. The series includes the Find X3 Pro, the China-exclusive Find X3, and the international-exclusive Find X3 Neo and Find X3 Lite.

Partners pulling out of MWC Barcelona

MWC Barcelona plans to be an in-person event this year. While the organizers have announced safety measures such as cutting down the number of attendees, some partner companies have announced they won’t be attending the event which is stlll about four months away. Among those that have announced they won’t be attending are Nokia (not HMD Global), Ericsson, Oracle, and Sony.

Last year in October 2020, Huawei announced the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro+, and Mate 40 RS Porsche Design flagship phones. Today, the company unleashed the Mate 40E as the fifth model in the Mate 40 family. The newly unveiled smartphone is slotted between the vanilla model and the Mate 40 Pro.

Huawei Mate 40E 5G specifications and features

The Huawei Mate 40E 5G has a 6.5-inch OLED screen with curved edges and a punch-hole design. It supports a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2376 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, a 240Hz touch sampling rate, and an in-screen fingerprint scanner.

The Mate 40 and Mate 40 Pro are fueled by Kirin 9000E and Kirin 9000 chipsets, respectively. The Mate 40E 5G is equipped with Kirin 990E. It boots to EMUI 11 based Android 10 OS and it comes with an NM card slot for additional storage. The Mate 40E is backed by a 4200mAh battery that supports 40W fast charging, 40W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging.

It has a front camera of 13-megapixel and its round-shaped rear camera module has a 64-megapixel main camera with an f/1.9 aperture, a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and OIS support. It comes with other features like dual SIM support, 5G, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.2, dual-frequency GPS, NFC, USB-C, and face unlock.

Huawei Mate 40E 5G pricing and availability

The Mate 40E 5G comes in two options such as 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage. They are priced at 4,599 Yuan (~$706) and 5,099 Yuan (~$782), respectively. It is now up for pre-orders in China through Vmall and other Chinese retailer sites. Its first sale will take place on March 18. The Mate 40E comes in colors like Bright Black, Glaze White, and Secret Silver

In related news, the company also confirmed the arrival of a new base model for the Mate 40 RS Porsche Design. The 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage variant that went official today is priced at 10,999 Yuan (~$1,688) in China. The existing 12GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB variant of the smartphone are available for 11,999 Yuan (~$1,842) and 12,999 Yuan (~$1,995), respectively. The new variant will go on sale from March 18 in China.

The Mate 40 series was announced a few months ago. The series includes the Mate 40, the Mate 40 Pro, the Mate 40 Pro+, and the Mate 40 RS Porsche Edition. Alongside these phones, Huawei also announced a fifth Mate phone – the Mate 30E Pro 5G. However, it appears there is another Mate 40 phone in the pipeline, one that will arrive as the Mate 40E.

This new device was spotted in the database of the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). The device which has model number OCE-AN00, (close to that of the Mate 40 which is OCE-AN10) was registered on December 9. The included image shows a device that looks like the standard Mate 40.

The phone packs a curved display with a hole in the top left corner of the screen for a single camera. The power button, which is red, is on the right side of the phone alongside the volume control button. On the back of the phone is a cookie-shaped camera housing that is home to four holes but three cameras. You can also see the Leica branding and an LED flash in the housing too. The Huawei Mate 40 has an audio jack and infrared sensor at the top while the bottom is home to the SIM tray, USB-C port, and a speaker grille.

TENAA already certified a Huawei phone with the OCE-AN00 model number. It has a 6.5-inch OLED screen with a 2376 x 1080 resolution. Unlike the standard Mate 40 which has a Kirin 9000E processor with a clock speed of 3.13GHz, the Mate 40E has a 2.86GHz processor. Our guess is that this might be the Kirin 990E 5G or Kirin 990 5G chipset. Since the Mate 40E has an “E” in its name, it is most likely powered by the Kirin 990E 5G.

The phone will come in 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB RAM variants with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. The primary camera is a 50MP sensor and it comes with a 16MP sensor and an 8MP sensor which should be the ultrawide and telephoto cameras respectively. The selfie camera is a 13MP sensor.

The Mate 40E, when it launches will have support for storage expansion, an in-display fingerprint scanner, a 4100mAh battery, and run Android 10 out of the box. We do not know when the phone will be unveiled but as we can see from the specs, the Mate 40E is just a Mate 40 with a Kirin 990E 5G or Kirin 990 5G chipset, which means it should sell for less when it is announced.

Huawei most likely made this model due to its chip production issues. The Kirin 9000 series is in limited supply, so it is practically launching a Mate 40 phone with a last-gen processor.
