Within just a few seconds, the new Mate X2 Collector&#8217;s Edition was sold out, despite the device being an ultra high end device.</p>
<p>The new special edition of the Mate X2 was priced at 18,999 Yuan (roughly 2,976 US Dollars). For those unaware, this variant of the Mate X2 upgrades the original&#8217;s 8GB of RAM to 12GB, which is paired with 512GB of internal storage. Under the hood, the ultra premium handset sports the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-9000/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HiSilicon Kirin 9000</a> processor, which supports 5G networking. Apart from the minor changes, the device is basically the same in other aspects to the original version.</p>

<p>Since Huawei was <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/18/tsmc-halts-new-huawei-orders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">cut off from its primary chip supplier TSMC</a>, the Kirin 9000 5G SoC are based on the remaining inventory of its in house chipset. In other words, its supply is very limited, which, in turn, would&#8217;ve raised its value as a &#8220;Collector&#8217;s&#8221; item. And with the brand&#8217;s high popularity in its home market, it arrives as no surprise that it was sold out in mere seconds. Interestingly, some users even took to online channels to resell this model owing to the surprising demand. These online listings have started accepting bids (Via <a href="https://www.ithome.com/0/587/420.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>ITHome</em></a>), with the highest bid even crossing a whopping 21,000 Yuan (roughly 3,200 US Dollars).</p>

<p>According to the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, the Huawei Mate X2 will get a plain leather version. Unfortunately, he didn&#8217;t state what color the leather will be.</p>
<p>Apart from having a leather-clad back, the new variant will have a Kirin 9000 5G processor and run <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/harmonyos">HarmonyOS</a> out of the box. If this doesn&#8217;t sound like news, it actually is. The Huawei Mate X2 5G launched with <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/emui">EMUI</a> 11 based on Android 10 out of the box. Huawei also <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x2-4g/">announced a 4G version of the phone</a> with the same processor but it runs HarmonyOS 2 out of the box. Save for these differences, the rest of the specs remain unchanged.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X2 has a 6.45-inch 90Hz cover display with a pill-shaped cut-out that houses a single 16MP front-facing camera. The foldable display is 8 inches and also has a 90Hz refresh rate. Both screens are OLED.</p>
<p>The Kirin 9000 processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. There is a NanoMemory card slot for adding up to an extra 256GB of storage.</p>
<p>On the back of the phone are four cameras &#8211; a 50MP main sensor with PDAF and OIS, a 12MP sensor with OIS, PDAF, and a telephoto lens for 3x optical zoom, an 8MP sensor with a periscope telephoto lens for 10x optical zoom, and a 16MP sensor with an ultrawide angle lens. It also has a 4500mAh battery, support for 55W fast charging, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, and an IR blaster.</p>
<p>We do not know when this leather version will be announced but it may cost a bit more than the versions with a glass back.</p>

Now, a few leaksters have claimed that they have received the full upgrade to the proprietary operating system.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-341957 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Powered-By-HarmonyOS-logo.jpg?x10805" alt="Powered By HarmonyOS logo" width="690" height="537" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Powered-By-HarmonyOS-logo.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Powered-By-HarmonyOS-logo-300x233.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Powered-By-HarmonyOS-logo-540x420.jpg 540w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.notebookcheck.net/The-Huawei-Mate-X2-now-on-HarmonyOS-according-to-new-reports.535958.0.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>NotebookCheck</em> </a>report, known Weibo tipsters including <a class="external-link-new-window" href="https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4630633944451162" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Changan Digital King</a> and <a class="external-link-new-window" href="https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4630640664250221" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Digital Chat Station</a> have claimed that they either heard of users receiving the major update of the HarmonyOS (AKA HongMengOS in China) or have received the new software themselves on their own devices. Similarly, a YouTube Channel <a class="external-link-new-window" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMHpd28raJo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CREATOR STUDIO</a> has even posted a new video, which basically offers a walkthrough of what appears to be the new user interface on the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate X2</a>.</p>
<p>Looking at this video, the YouTuber claims that the foldable smartphone is running &#8220;HarmonyOS 2.0.0 Developer Beta 3.&#8221; Furthermore, the leaksters have also claimed that the update has been released to the end users as well. For those unaware, HarmonyOS is the Chinese tech giant&#8217;s in house OS that it claims was built from scratch from the ground up. Although, the numerous leaks that have surfaced recently reveal that its multiple homescreens, gesture based navigation, app icons and other interfaces resemble Android.</p>
<p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Huawei Mate X2 Running HarmonyOS 2.0" width="696" height="522" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XMHpd28raJo?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Keep in mind that this is still an unconfirmed report at the moment, so take it with a pinch of salt. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for more information to surface before providing any concrete statements as well. It is possible that the company is rolling out the new update in China in a staggered manner, so we can expect more devices to soon be included. Thus, stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-372581 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera.png?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="811" height="478" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera.png 811w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera-300x177.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera-768x453.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera-696x410.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Camera-713x420.png 713w" sizes="(max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px" /></p>
<p>The Mate X2 foldable smartphone is officially priced at 17,999 Yuan (roughly 2,790 US Dollars) for the 256GB storage variant and 18,999 Yuan (roughly 2,944 US Dollars) for the 512GB storage variant. In other words, the new handset is an ultra high end device with a premium price tag. But, despite its high price, many people have already found that the placing an order for the foldable smartphone is not possible at the moment. Apparently, the option to place an order is not working, despite the device being in stock.</p>
<p>Furthermore, scalpers have also started reselling the device on other e commerce platforms at a higher price. These listings have been found in major websites like JD.com, with a premium ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 Yuan (roughly 1,500 to 3,000 US Dollars). Meaning, the 256GB Mate X2 variant that is priced at 17,999 Yuan is being sold for a price of around 28,888 Yuan, while a few other sellers are even pricing the device up to 38,366 Yuan.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-372580 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black.png?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="1264" height="1472" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black.png 1264w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-258x300.png 258w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-768x894.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-879x1024.png 879w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-696x811.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-1068x1244.png 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-Black-361x420.png 361w" sizes="(max-width: 1264px) 100vw, 1264px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, scalpers are basically people who acquire new products early on in large numbers to create an artificial scarcity, and resell these products on third party websites at a cost much higher than its actual price. This issue has recently been affecting various markets, like the newly launched console generations and even the GPU market as well. It remains to be seen how the Chinese tech giant deals with the situation.</p>

The foldable smartphone comes with a new folding design that differs from that of its siblings. It also has Huawei&#8217;s most powerful mobile processor, two high refresh rate displays, and a Leica-branded camera setup that surpasses that of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-40-pro/">Mate 40 Pro</a>. However, all these features have resulted in a high price tag.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-372574 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2 featured" width="2195" height="1441" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured.jpg 2195w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-300x197.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-768x504.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-1024x672.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-696x457.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-741x486.jpg 741w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-1068x701.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-640x420.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-featured-1920x1260.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 2195px) 100vw, 2195px" /></p>
<p><strong>Huawei Mate X2 Design</strong></p>
<p>Huawei has ditched the outward fold design of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> and Mate Xs for an inward folding design. This switch in design means that the Mate X2 has two displays &#8211; an outer screen that looks like a smaller and flat version of the Mate 40 Pro&#8217;s own screen and an inner display that is devoid of a notch or punch hole. It also means that the device has a new hinge design. Huawei says it used zirconium-based liquid metal for the hinge system.</p>
<figure id="attachment_372583" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-372583" style="width: 1359px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-372583" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold.jpg?x10805" alt="Mate X2 fold" width="1359" height="754" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold.jpg 1359w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-300x166.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-768x426.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-1024x568.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-696x385.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-1068x593.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Mate-X2-fold-757x420.jpg 757w" sizes="(max-width: 1359px) 100vw, 1359px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-372583" class="wp-caption-text">The unique design of the Mate X2 allows for a seamless fold</figcaption></figure>
<p>A more interesting part of the design is the Seamless Foldable Design. The right half of the device slopes inwards while the left part slopes in the opposite direction. Huawei says that the advantage this brings is that the phone is perfectly balanced whether unfolded or folded even though the point of balance is no longer at the center. Another advantage this design brings is that there are no gaps when the device is folded unlike in the case of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold2-5g/">Galaxy Z Fold 2</a>.</p>

<p>Huawei ships the phone with EMUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box. However, it says it will be upgraded to <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/harmonyos">HarmonyOS</a> in April. It also revealed that the top 200 apps have been optimized to take advantage of the phone&#8217;s form factor. Users will be able to minimize apps into bubbles, open two instances of an app for better multitasking, and more.</p>
<p>Surprisingly, there is no support for a stylus which would have given it an upper hand over the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.</p>
<p>There is a 4500mAh battery capacity inside with support for 55W fast wired charging. Unfortunately, there is no support for wireless charging. Huawei ships the phone with its 66W SuperCharge charger.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Huawei Mate X2 Camera</strong></p>
<p>The camera configuration of the Huawei Mate X2 is unmatched when it comes to foldable smartphones. The main camera is a 50MP f/1.9 RYYB sensor with OIS and it comes along with a 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera, a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with OIS, and an 8MP f/4.4 RYYB periscope camera that also has OIS and brings 10x optical zoom. The phone also has 100x digital zoom and a 2.5cm super macro mode.</p>

<p>The Mate X2 has a 16MP front-facing camera but users can take super selfies with the rear cameras when the device is unfolded. In this mode, the external display serves as the viewfinder.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Huawei Mate X2 Price and Availability</strong></p>
<p>The Mate X2 is not cheap even in Huawei&#8217;s home country. The base model is priced at RMB 17,999 (~$2785) while the 512GB RAM version is RMB 18,999 (~$2940). It will go on sale in China on February 25 and will come with a Huawei SuperCharge charger, a Type-C data cable, a pair of Type-C earphones, and a leather protective case included inside the box.</p>

There is a case with a kickstand that is priced at RMB 299 (~$46), an RMB 399 (~$62) car mount that allows you to use the device in its unfolded state, a windowed case that is priced at RMB 399 (~$62), and a leather sleeve case that is RMB 699 (~$108).</p>

The poster suggests that the company has adopted an in-folding design for its upcoming foldable smartphone.</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x">Huawei Mate X</a> from 2019 and its refreshed version called the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xs">Mate Xs</a> from 2020 came with almost identical designs. Both devices sported a large-sized single display that could be folded in half. When folded, the display remained on the outside of the device.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-371867" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-in-folding-design-poster.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2 in-folding design poster" width="690" height="1227" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-in-folding-design-poster.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-in-folding-design-poster-169x300.jpg 169w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-in-folding-design-poster-576x1024.jpg 576w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-in-folding-design-poster-236x420.jpg 236w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>Samsung’s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> devices are all equipped with an in-folding design. It appears that the Mate X2, which is scheduled to go official<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/03/huawei-mate-x2-launch-date-is-february-22/"> on Feb. 22</a> will sport a similar design. The announcement of the Mate X2 will coincide with the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2021 event that will take place next week. The final device is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/02/03/render-gives-us-an-early-looks-at-the-huawei-mate-x2/">likely to look like the render below</a>.</p>
<p>As it can be seen, the Mate X2 may offer a full-screen viewing experience through its internal display. The outer display may feature a pill-shaped cutout. It is speculated that the Mate X2 has an 8.01-inch foldable display made by China’s BOE company. It is expected to support 2480 x 2220 pixels resolution. It may feature a 6.45-inch display on the front that will offer a resolution of 2270 x 1160 pixels.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-369305 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-render.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2 render" width="690" height="573" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-render.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-render-300x249.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Huawei-Mate-X2-render-506x420.jpg 506w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.chinastarmarket.cn/detail/679767" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>ChinaStarMarket</em> </a>report, the Chinese tech giant had initially only contracted exclusively with BOE to support the domestic supply chain. Both companies are based in China, thus, it is understood that the exclusive deal was to benefit their home country&#8217;s industry. Although now, it seems that Huawei is planning on including Samsung within its supply chain to supply flexible screens for its second gen Mate X foldable handset as well.</p>
<p>As per sources close to the matter, the Mate X2&#8217;s display will be supplied by Samsung. However, a separate report from known tipster Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst DisplaySearch and DSCC, claims that Samsung Display was initially planned to supply the flexible panels along with BOE. But now, Huawei will only place orders for the Mate X2&#8217;s displays with just BOE. Unfortunately, we have no way of confirming either reports at the moment.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">It was originally going to have a Samsung Display and BOE display. Now just BOE.</p>
<p>&mdash; Ross Young (@DSCCRoss) <a href="https://twitter.com/DSCCRoss/status/1356966882075631616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 3, 2021</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>Furthermore, the ChinaStarMarket report also added that the Mate X2&#8217;s camera lenses will be supplied by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/sunny-optical-technology/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sunny Optical</a> and O-film Tech. The former is a known camera lens supplier, which is even <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/01/08/apple-wont-upgrade-camera-till-iphone-15-kuo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">rumored to supply Apple with camera lenses for its 2021 iPhone and iPad models</a> as well. Currently, a lot of these reports are still unconfirmed and we will have to wait for additional information to surface to know for sure, so stay tuned for more updates.</p>

Today, the TET-AN00 model number along with its network variant with model number TET-AN10 received approval from the 3C authority of China. The 3C certification is a good hint that the arrival of the Mate X2 may not be far away.</p>
<p>The 3C certification of the Huawei TET-AN00 / AN10 smartphone reveals that it supports 5G connectivity and it may ship with a 66W charger. It is the same charger that is available with the Mate 40 series of flagship phones. No other information on the specs of the Mate X2 can be found in its 3C listing.</p>

<p>At the end of September, the Wi-Fi Alliance authority certified one of the global editions of the Mate X2 that has a TET-NX9 model number. The Wi-Fi certification revealed that the device supports Wi-Fi 6 and it is loaded with EMU 11.</p>
<p>Speculations surrounding the Mate X2 have revealed that it will be sporting an inward folding design like the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-z-fold2-5g/">Galaxy Z Fold 2</a>. In other words, it won’t be equipped with an outward folding design like the predecessor <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x">Mate X</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-xs">Mate Xs.</a></p>
<p>The Mate X2 is expected to feature an 8-inch foldable screen that will offer a resolution of 2248 x 2220 pixels. It is likely to draw power from the Kirin 9000 5G chipset. There is no word on the launch date of the device. Hopefully, the rumor mill will spill some information on the Mate X2 in the coming days.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/opvouwbare-telefoons/huawei-mate-x2-5g-smartphone/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em> </a>report, the Chinese tech giant filed a patent for the device back in 2019 with the CNIPA, which finally got approved earlier today (25th September 2020) and arrives with 32 product sketches and more. Looking at these images, it is clear that the smartphone features a foldable design and will be a premium grade flagship. It features both a large primary display along with an external screen as well.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/24/amazon-takes-on-mi-tv-stick-with-30-fire-tv-stick-lite-3rd-gen-fire-tv-stick/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Amazon takes on the Mi TV Stick with the $30 Fire TV Stick Lite; 3rd-gen Fire TV Stick tags along</a></strong></h6>
<p>The one on the outside acts as the primary display when the device is folded and features a dual punch hole selfie camera on the front. On the other hand, the large display on the back covers the majority of the rear panel, with its hinge mechanism bending inward, which is quite different from what the company has offered so far.  Furthermore, the rear camera system&#8217;s design resembles the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-p40-pro-plus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei P40 Pro+</a>, although, the sensor configurations are a bit different, with a periscopic zoom lens also being found on the back.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-344407 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="857" height="1024" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024.jpg 857w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024-251x300.jpg 251w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024-768x918.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024-696x832.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/huawei-mate-x2-857x1024-352x420.jpg 352w" sizes="(max-width: 857px) 100vw, 857px" /></p>
<p>The inward folding design with an external display is quite similar to what Samsung has been offering in its foldable smartphones. However, the design isn&#8217;t just a simple replication. A very notable aspect is that the device gets thinner when we move away from the primary portion of the device. In other words, when the smartphone is fully unfolded, one can see that the area that houses the camera and all the necessary specs is thicker than the region that just houses the inner and outer displays. Unfortunately, this might be an attempt from Huawei to cover all bases and not something it is actively working on. So stay tuned for more updates.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400">The TENAA listings of the forthcoming nova8 series and Mate X2 were first </span><a href="https://weibo.com/6048569942/JlVRdhVvz"><span style="font-weight: 400">shared</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400"> by popular leakster Digital Chat Station on Weibo. He also exposed the codenames of these smartphones.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400">According to the tipster, the devices in the HUAWEI nova8 series are codenamed “</span><b>Jessica</b><span style="font-weight: 400">” and “</span><b>JessicaH</b><span style="font-weight: 400">”. Though he did not mention the marketing name of these products, they should probably retail as HUAWEI nova8 and HUAWEI nova8 Pro respectively. Further, they will come with two model numbers each &#8211; </span><b>JSC-AN00 </b><span style="font-weight: 400">/ </span><b>JSC-TN00</b><span style="font-weight: 400"> and</span><b> HJC-AN00 </b><span style="font-weight: 400">/ </span><b>HJC-TN00</b><span style="font-weight: 400">.</span></p>

Back in August, reputed leaker Evan Blass revealed the devices in the series to be called “</span><b>Jessica</b><span style="font-weight: 400">” as well as “</span><b>Barbie</b><span style="font-weight: 400">”. Anyway, he did not straight up mention these codenames to be of nova8 series as he simply called them to be for next-gen nova series. That said, the smartphone associated with the latter codename is still a mystery.</span></p>

<p>Going by the release date for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> last year, the Mate X2 should not arrive until November, and that is about two months away. Unfortunately, that will most likely not happen, no thanks to Huawei&#8217;s troubles with the US government.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Shouldn&#39;t be a surprise, but we hear the Mate X2 won&#39;t launch in 2020 due to the US government&#39;s restrictions on Huawei. We have had to lower our foldable forecasts&#8230;</p>

<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>According to Ross Young, the Display Analyst and founder of DisplaySearch, the Mate X2 will not arrive this year due to the restrictions placed by the US government. These restrictions have made it near impossible for Huawei to get components for its products. If you have been following the news, you already know suppliers are trying to get licenses to supply the tech giant. However, there is no guarantee they will be granted, so Huawei has to cut back its plans.</p>
<p>The Huawei Mate X2 is supposed to have an inward folding design but with the same screen size as its predecessor, a more powerful processor (the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-9000">Kirin 9000</a>), upgraded cameras, and a stylus.</p>
<p>It is not yet known if Huawei is postponing the launch of the foldable device to next year or if it has suspended development.</p>

With the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/05/galaxy-z-fold-2-arrives-with-bigger-displays-rest-of-the-specs-under-wraps/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 just being launched a while back</a>, this could be Huawei&#8217;s answer as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mate-x2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate X2</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-337086 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="1024" height="676" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676-768x507.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676-696x459.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/opvouwbare-telefoon-sub-display-1024x676-636x420.jpg 636w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Huawei had filed the design patent back in 2019 with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), which got approved and published earlier today (14th August 2020). The notable aspect of the foldable smartphone is the fact that it features a stylus and has a sub display right next to the primary screen, which follows an inward folding design.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/14/redmi-g-gaming-laptop-launches-with-144hz-display-core-i7-10750h-gtx-1650-ti-and-more/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Redmi G Gaming Laptop launches with 144Hz display, Core i7-10750H, GTX 1650 Ti, and more</a></strong></h6>
<p>Looking at the detailed images provided by <a href="https://nl.letsgodigital.org/smartphones/opvouwbare-telefoon-huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>LetsGoDigital</em></a>, the bezels around the primary screen are thin, including the one next to the secondary display. This sub display is narrow and long, covering the entire length on the left side, and features two cut outs for a dual front facing camera system. This entire setup is slightly raised, providing space for the stylus as well. On the rear, a quad camera setup can be found.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-337087 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="1024" height="676" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676-300x198.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676-768x507.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676-696x459.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-opvouwbare-telefoon-styluspen-1024x676-636x420.jpg 636w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>While the sub display and camera module portion are rather thick, the portion with the flexible display is rather thin. This allows the device to fold right up till the sub display, matching it in overall thickness when folded. Notably, no physical buttons can be observed on the device, which might suggest the functionality of its smaller display. Unfortunately, the patent might just be Huawei&#8217;s attempt to cover all bases and they may never really develop such a device, but we would have to wait for an official announcement to know for sure. So stay tuned.</p>

The tech giant is also expected to unveil the Mate X2 foldable smartphone. Talking of the Mate X2, unofficial renders of the foldable device has appeared online.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-336369" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2" width="679" height="324" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2.png 679w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-300x143.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px" /></a></p>
<p>The renders appeared to have been scooped from a fan-generated video rendition of what the Mate X2 would look like. The rendition is seemingly based on a previous foldable phone design patent that was filed by Huawei. Industry insider Ross Young (<a href="https://twitter.com/DSCCRoss/status/1292911166201704448" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">@DSSC</a>) who shared the renders affirm that the Mate X2&#8217;s design is not much different from the renders.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2.png?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-336370" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2.png?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2" width="765" height="425" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2.png 765w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2-300x167.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2-696x387.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-2-756x420.png 756w" sizes="(max-width: 765px) 100vw, 765px" /></a></p>
<p>In terms of the design, the renders show that the next-gen Mate X2 will utilise an in-folding design as against the out-folding one used on the Mate X. The camera module will be located at the side of the screen. There will also be a stylus pen on board, according to the leak. The phone will have a compartment for storing the stylus pen.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-336371" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X2 patent" width="600" height="600" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/huawei-mate-x2-3-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></a></p>
<p>Just under the camera modules, the device will pack a secondary screen which can display relevant information such as time and weather.</p>
<p>Perhaps, what should interest you the most about the Mate X2 is that the device can be folded halfway and used in a laptop mode. It was the first of its kind from the company and had a display that opened and closed outward, unlike <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Fold</a> which folded inward. Now, the Chinese tech giant has applied for a patent that reveals that it&#8217;s second foldable smartphone will feature an inward folding display, similar to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a>.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-303542" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/x2-4.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="571" height="268" /></p>
<p>The patent application was filed in the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and is reportedly for the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mate-x2/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mate X2</a>. The device is expected to be released in the third quarter of 2020. According to the illustrations that accompany the patent, a foldable smartphone can be observed which has a design similar to the Mate X but with its display bending inwards.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/03/huawei-and-other-chinese-firms-continue-operating-factories-despite-coronavirus-outbreak/">Huawei and few other Chinese firms continue operating production lines despite Coronavirus Outbreak</a></strong></h6>
<p>On the front, dual front facing cameras are present while the rear features a quad camera setup, for a total of six cameras. Based on the schematics, the Huawei Mate X2 will arrive with a pen/stylus and has slightly more pronounced curved edges, unlike the square design of the Mate X. This lead to a sidebar also being provided where the front facing cameras are present which will include a narrow screen that displays notifications and other information like date, time or even weather and battery data.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-303539 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei" width="940" height="627" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2.jpg 940w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Patent-application-reveals-how-Huawei-will-copy-Samsung-with-the-Mate-X2-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, the patent application does not reveal any finer details like specifications of the Huawei Mate X2. Although, the company&#8217;s latest 7nm Kirin 990 5G SoC is likely to be used since the handset would arrive just before its rumored 5nm Kirin 1020 processor. Currently, the Mate Xs, a refreshed Mate X variant, is slated to receive the Kirin 990 chipset as well. So, we might see the same or a special variant for the Mate X2, but that is unlikely.</p>

The device was only made available in limited quantity due to mass production challenges. The tech giant is readying a successor to the Mate and may have just filed a patent for the device. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-303271" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="900" height="900" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-3-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></p>
<p>The patent was filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for a new foldable smartphone. The description and schematics show that the device will come with Stylus support. The patent describes a form factor similar to the first-gen Mate X, but there are some differences.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/17/xiaomi-aqara-smart-home-products-amazon-us-pricing-availability">Xiaomi’s Aqara officially unveils its range of smart home products in the US</a></strong></h6>
<p>The most spectacular difference is that the patented phone utilises an inward-fold design while the Mate X folds outwards. Another interesting aspect is the camera setup onboard. The device packs a whopping six-camera setup as against four cameras on the Mate X. Two of the sensors are housed on the front housed on the vertical sidebar, and four at the back.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-303272" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4.jpg?x10805" alt="" width="900" height="900" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4.jpg 900w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4-768x768.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4-696x696.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/huawei-foldable-patent-4-420x420.jpg 420w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></p>

<p>According to the new report, Xiaomi&#8217;s foldable smartphone will use flexible panels made by Samsung Display. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/01/29/xiaomi-using-visionox-amoled-panels-for-foldable-phone-development/">Visionox was supplying foldable panels to Xiaomi</a> initially but the yield was reportedly not enough to produce the panels in large quantities. So <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi">Xiaomi</a> is said to be in talks with Samsung Display to secure supply for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/foldable">foldable</a> panels. However, the same report states that we might not see a foldable phone from Xiaomi this year.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s surprising is that Huawei is also reportedly shifting its foldable panel supplier this year. The report states that the telecommunications giant is already in the process of securing foldable panels for its smartphone from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/samsung-display">Samsung Display</a>. Its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/huawei-mate-x/">Mate X</a> came with BOE&#8217;s foldable panels but Samsung Display&#8217;s panel reportedly has better quality and quantity. It is said that Huawei is likely to use Samsung Display as the primary supplier for its foldable, with BOE acting as an additional supplier.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg?x10805"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-284886" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg?x10805" alt="huawei mate x" width="640" height="446" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-300x209.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-100x70.jpg 100w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-7-603x420.jpg 603w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></p>
<p>The report also states that Huawei&#8217;s next-generation foldable smartphone will launch in the second half of the year alongside the second-generation Galaxy Fold model. This makes sense given how the Mate X2 is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/26/huawei-mate-x2-foldable-phone-to-arrive-in-q3-2020/">rumored to release sometime around IFA 2020</a>. The rumor also said that the X2 will be outward folding, similar to the Galaxy Fold.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>UP NEXT: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/01/02/huawei-opens-first-smart-unmanned-retail-store-in-china/">Huawei opens first smart unmanned retail store in China</a></strong></h6>
<p>Note that the new foldable smartphone expected at<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/10/23/huawei-mate-xs-a-mate-x-powered-by-the-kirin-990-5g-arrives-march-2020/"> MWC 2020 in February is the Mate XS</a>, a slightly modified version of the existing Mate X foldable, most likely using BOE&#8217;s foldable panel.</p>
<p>The recent success of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Galaxy Fold</a> seems to have boosted Samsung Display&#8217;s reputation in the market. It is said that the display maker received a lot of interest from top Chinese smartphone makers like OPPO, Vivo, &amp; Huawei but its initial focus is on supplying foldable panels to Samsung. After the launch of the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/26/samsung-galaxy-s11-and-galaxy-fold-rumored-to-launch-on-11th-february-2020/"> clamshell Galaxy Fold model sometime before MWC</a>, Samsung Display will focus on supplying panels for the Mate X2 and the second generation Galaxy Fold devices. In the meantime, it is likely to start supplying panels for the foldable smartphone from Xiaomi, expected to launch in 2021.</p>
<p>So it looks like Samsung and Huawei are likely to remain the top foldable smartphone makers, even in 2020.</p>

Come next year, Huawei will follow it up with two more foldable devices &#8211; the Mate Xs and the Mate X2.</p>
<figure id="attachment_284882" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-284882" style="width: 640px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-284882 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3.jpg?x10805" alt="Huawei Mate X hands on pictures" width="640" height="419" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3.jpg 640w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/huawei-mate-x-3-300x196.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-284882" class="wp-caption-text">Huawei Mate X</figcaption></figure>
<p>We already know the Mate Xs is a revamped version of the Mate X with a Kirin 990 5G processor, a better hinge design, and a tougher screen. And it is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/12/19/upgraded-huawei-mate-x-with-a-better-hinge-tougher-screen-coming-to-mwc-2020/">scheduled to launch in March 2020 during Mobile World Congress 2020</a>. However, the Mate X2 is the one we are excited about.</p>
<p>According to @RODENT950, Huawei will announce the Huawei Mate X2 in the third quarter of next year. Based on the date, the foldable device should be powered by the upcoming Kirin 1000 processor and will most likely be unveiled at IFA 2020.</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true">
<p lang="en" dir="ltr">Mate X2 will be like galaxy Fold but it&#39;s have full sized phone screen and maybe smaller notification/ selfie screen to other side.</p>
<p>&mdash; Teme (特米) (@RODENT950) <a href="https://twitter.com/RODENT950/status/1209890041914437632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 25, 2019</a></p></blockquote>
<p><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script></p>
<p>He goes on to reveal more details about the device in another tweet.</p>
<p>With respect to its appearance, the Mate X2 will adopt a design similar to that of the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/samsung-galaxy-fold/">Samsung Galaxy Fold</a>. This means it will not fold outwards but inwards. He adds that it will have a full-sized phone screen and then a smaller display on the outside for notifications or selfies.</p>
<p>What we can deduce from the above is that the Mate X2 will not unfold into a tablet but into a standard phone with a full-screen, probably between 6.5-inches and 6.9-inches. Based on this design, the phone should have a smaller footprint when folded and should fit into pockets easily.</p>
<p>Last month, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/16/huaweis-razr-style-flip-foldable-patent-design-is-fresh-minimalistic/">a Huawei patent showing a device that folds vertically like the Motorola Razr 2019</a> was published by the World Intellectual Property Office. The diagrams showed that when folded, it didn&#8217;t fold into two equal halves. This left a part of the display sticking out that can serve as a sort of secondary display for showing notifications.</p>
<p>What do you think about the rumored design of the Mate X2? let us know in the comment box.</p>
