In addition to the Matebook X Pro ultrabook, the company is also bringing its cheaper Matebook D lineup from China to Europe. The D series comes in two versions, the Matebook D 14 and D 15.

Huawei Matebook X Pro 2020

The Matebook X Pro comes with top of the line specifications featuring Intel’s latest 10th generation Comet Lake processors. The laptop can be configured with up to Core i7 chip, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. You also have the option to upgrade to Nvidia’s MX250 discrete graphics.

The ultrabook has a 13.9-inch touchscreen display with a 3:2 3000 x 2000 aspect ratio and 91% screen to body ratio. Design-wise not much has changed as compared to its predecessor. In fact, you have the exact same 14.6mm × 304mm × 217mm chassis that weighs 1.33kg as last year. You also get one USB-A port and two USB-C ports along with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a fingerprint enabled power button. The pop-up 1MP camera that’s hidden on the keyboard also makes a come in this model.

The Matebook X Pro 2020 comes in a new emerald green color option, in addition to space grey and mystic silver.

The ultrabook starts at €1499 for the base Core i5 variant and will go on sale in April 2020.

Huawei Matebook D 14 & 15

Huawei also announced the new Matebook D 14 & 15 models globally today. These aren’t exactly new laptop models from the company. Huawei had announced them back in China in November 2019 and today, it has launched them globally.

The Matebook D features a 14-inch 1080p display while the Matebook 15 comes with a 15.6-inch 1080p screen. The two laptops can be configured up to the 10th generation Core i7 processor with an option to go for an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U chipset. You can choose between SSD or SSD + HDD combo too. Notably, features such as a fingerprint enabled power button and pop-up button camera will be available on this budget D series as well. Both the laptops get a 65W charger in the box.

Unfortunately, we have no word on the availability or pricing of the Matebook D lineup in Europe yet.

According to the details on the poster, the Windows edition of the MateBook D will be available in both AMD (Ryzen) and Intel options.

The Ryzen variant is already available for pre-order starting today and will be available for purchase on January 1, 2020. The Intel version will not be up for pre-order until 10 AM on January 3, 2020, and will then go on sale at midnight on January 9, 2020. The MateBook D came with Windows 10 pre-installed, which might have surprised a lot of readers. So it turns out that the U.S. commerce department has recently approved some licenses to trade with Huawei, including the one requested by Microsoft.

The Redmond giant revealed in a statement to Bloomberg a couple of days back that it has been granted a license to “export mass-market software” to Huawei. While the company didn’t elaborate on the term ‘mass-market’, we now know that it includes Microsoft’s Windows 10 platform.

Prior to this, Huawei pre-installed Deepin Linux on its MateBook models as a replacement to Windows 10. The telecommunications giant wasn’t allowed to use Windows 10 on its MateBook models ever since it was added to the U.S. government’s Entity List. So it was selling cheaper versions of its MateBook laptops running Deepin Linux onboard. Despite the advantages of having a Linux setup, Windows as a platform doesn’t have viable replacements. So getting the supply for Windows 10 back on its notebook models should come as a huge reprieve for the company.

The U.S. commerce department reportedly got around 290 requests for a license to trade with Huawei last week. Unfortunately, only a handful of these requests are expected to be approved. We have no word on which other companies have been granted licenses apart from Microsoft.

To recall, Microsoft’s President Brad Smith, was vocal about how the U.S. ban on Huawei was both unfair and un-American. Microsoft had reportedly approached the Trump administration to talk about the ban but would often get vague replies like, “Well, if you knew what we knew, you would agree with us”.

Microsoft’s license to trade with Huawei is a step forward. However, the company’s struggle is far from over. There are still companies like Google who are barred from selling its software to the Chinese giant. And Google is very important for Huawei, who is currently the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer. In fact, it could have even surpassed Samsung by this year-end to become world number one. But without Google services onboard, Huawei smartphones are essentially Dead on Arrival (DOA) in the international markets.

So it’s extremely important for Huawei to get access to Google services as soon as possible. Unfortunately, given the current situation, we don’t know if that’ll happen anytime in the near future.

MateBook E

The MateBook E is the real successor to last year’s model. It is the competitor to Microsoft’s Surface Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy Book. The 2-in-1 race just got hotter.

The MateBook E is just 6.9mm thick and has a 12-inch 2K touch-screen display with a 160° viewing angle. There are two versions: one with a 7th Gen Intel Core M3-7Y30 processor and the other will have a Core i5-7Y54 processor. Both will have Intel’s HD Graphics 615. Memory configuration is either 4GB or 8GB, and SSD storage starts at 128GB and maxes out at 512GB.

The MateBook E has a new Folio keyboard with backlight and a hinge design that can be adjusted steplessly up to 160°. Huawei has partnered with Dolby to provide the new Matebook with custom-designed speakers. Dubbed Dolby Audio Premium, Huawei says you should expect cinema-level audio quality when in use.

The MateBook E has a 33.7Wh battery (4430mAh battery) that should last for up to 9 hours when watching a movie. For security, the matebook has a fingerprint scanner with a security chip on the side.

There is no pricing detail yet but the MateBook E will be available in titanium grey and champagne gold. The matebook will come with a keyboard but you can pick up the MatePen which has support for 2048 levels of pressure or throw in a bluetooth mouse

MateBook X

Smaller than an A4 paper. It is that simple. The 13-inch MateBook X is for those who want a traditional laptop but one that has got style. Just because it is small doesn’t mean it doesn’t pack a punch.

The MateBook X has the slimmest bezels on any notebook. Its display has a 2K resolution and is protected by gorilla glass and its fingerprint scanner is built right into the power button. What’s more, it is 12.5mm thick.

It is available with the same CPU configuration as the MateBook D and you can have it with either 4GB RAM paired with 256GB SSD or 8GB RAM paired with a 512GB SSD.

Since the MateBook X has a fanless design, Huawei says it uses space cooling technology to keep it cool. The notebook contain MEPCM (micro-encapsulated phase change material) that melt and solidify at certain temperatures allowing it to dissipate heat and cool the system when necessary.

There is a 41.4 Wh (5449mAh) battery in the notebook that should last up to 10 hours for web browsing and Dolby Atmos for immersive audio.

The MateBook X will be available in Prestige Gold, Rose Gold, and Space Grey when it goes on sale.
