<p>According to a <a href="https://money.udn.com/money/story/5612/5397391?from=edn_hotlist_index" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>MoneyUDN</em> </a>report, the chipmaking giant will be one of the first firms to place an order with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TSMC</a>, world&#8217;s largest contract chip maker, for 4nm based chips and even the next gen 3nm based chips as well. In other words, the company is also one of TSMC&#8217;s first  customers for the 3nm process, with others like being <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm</a> in the future. Furthermore, this has also led MediaTek to see an influx of orders from various Android smartphone makers like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vivo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Vivo</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a>.</p>
<p>Meaning, the company will become a key supplier of 5G enabled chipsets to upcoming high end devices that will launch in the near future. Notably, this would also mark the first time MediaTek has been a proper contender in the high end flagship market and has also kept pace with or even surpassed its primary rival, Qualcomm. Simply put, the shift towards more advanced manufacturing process would only benefit the company in the smartphone market.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-333744 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/mediatek-dimensity-2000.png?x44794" alt="mediatek" width="600" height="389" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/mediatek-dimensity-2000.png 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/mediatek-dimensity-2000-300x195.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, the 4nm process and even the 3nm process is more advanced that the current gen 5nm process. Since the technology is more advanced the cost of 5G enabled chips from the company is expected to rise from 30 to 35 US Dollars to 80 US Dollars, which could also lead to a significant rise in revenue as well. Unfortunately, the company has yet to offer any specifics regarding this matter, so stay tuned for more updates.</p>

Subsequently, consumer demand for 5G smartphones is on the rise. As a result, a lot more 5G phones have been launched this year compared to the same period last year and there are more to come. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/MediaTek-Dimensity-800.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-326809" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/MediaTek-Dimensity-800.jpg?x44794" alt="MediaTek Dimensity 800" width="690" height="388" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/MediaTek-Dimensity-800.jpg 690w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/MediaTek-Dimensity-800-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px" /></a></p>
<p>With the increasing demand for 5G smartphones, the demand for 5G processors from mobile phone manufacturers is also increasing. Presently, <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/qualcomm">Qualcomm</a> are the major suppliers of 5G processors for smartphones. Although <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/huawei">Huawei</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a> manufacture their own in-house chipsets, they are mostly used for their own smartphones. In rare cases, we have seen a few models running on <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/samsung">Samsung</a>&#8216;s 5G Exynos chipset like the  Exynos 880-powered <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/26/vivo-y70s-5g-launched-with-exynos-880-and-48mp-triple-cameras-for-1998-yuan-280/">Vivo Y70s 5G</a>.</p>
<p>As per a report carried by <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20200610PD200.html">DigiTimes</a> (Paywalled) the Taiwanese fabless chip maker is expected to ship more than 80 million mobile SoCs for 5G handsets in 2020. The report also hinted that most of the shipments will be to Chinese handset vendors. This is likely due to the spread in the 5G coverage in China. The projected shipment volume may push up MediaTek&#8217;s global market share in the segment to at least 40% and serve as a major growth driver for the company, the report tips.</p>

<p>While the estimates look impressive, they are lower than <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/02/10/mediatek-expects-200-million-5g-smartphone-sales-in-2020-with-china-getting-the-bulk/">MediaTek&#8217;s projection of 200 million 5G mobile SoCs</a> shipment for 2020. 200 million shipments would have been feasible but we don&#8217;t see the company getting such figures due to the slump in the smartphone market occasioned by the COVID 19 pandemic. Moreso, the Taiwanese semiconductor company still has Qualcomm to compete with. In addition, commercial 5G network is yet to role out in most cities outside China.</p>
<p>Presently, MediaTek has launched a number of 5G smartphone processors, including the Dimensity 1000 series, Dimensity 800 series and the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/05/18/mediatek-announces-dimensity-820-chipset-for-affordable-5g-devices/">Dimensity 820 series</a>. There are rumours that MediaTek and Qualcomm will also introduce entry-level 5G smartphone processors in the third quarter of this year.</p>

The company has invested billions of dollars in 5G technology development with thousands of research specialists and is confident in its products capabilities.</p>
<p>According to a new report, MediaTek&#8217;s sales will grow to 9.84 billion US dollars in the Q1 of 2020. The number is about 20 percent higher than the company&#8217;s expected sales in 2019. The U.S. securities house published a research note that predicts the boom owing to the new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/dimensity-1000/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dimensity 1000 SoC</a> (MediaTek&#8217;s first 5G networking capable chipset) which was announced on Tuesday.</p>

<p>The Dimensity 1000 SoC is targetting the Chinese markets according to analysts. This includes manufacturing giants as clients such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/xiaomi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Xiaomi</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Oppo</a>. The new 5G chipset uses the advance 7nm process of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tsmc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TSMC</a>) which is the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker. It is expected that the new SoC will hit the markets in the first quarter of 2020.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/27/blackviews-first-5g-rugged-flagship-will-use-mediateks-dimensity-1000-chipset/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Blackviews first 5G Rugged flagship will use MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 chipset</a></strong></h6>
<p>Notably, the US brokerage reported that the Dimensity 1000 SoC is twice as fast as the<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/kirin-990/page/3/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Kirin 990</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/exynos-980/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Exynos 980</a> chipsets; which are proprietary SoC&#8217;s made by <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/hisilicon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">HiSilicon Technologies</a> from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/brand/huawei/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Huawei</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Samsung</a> respectively. It is also being claimed that it can rival <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm&#8217;s Snapdragon</a> 5G chips but the exact model was not mentioned. Unfortunately, we will have to wait till the official launch for real life tests.</p>

<p>The Dimensity 1000 could usher in a new wave of smartphones equipped with MediaTek&#8217;s processors. It is being forecasted by the brokerage that the company will ship about 60 million units of the latest chip in 2020. Additionally, MediaTek is also partnering up with the American tech giant, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/intel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Intel</a>, for the development of 5G chips for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/notebooks/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">notebook</a> computers.</p>

Now, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/26/redmi-k30-launch-10-december/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Redmi K30 series</a> is just around the corner with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/5g/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">5G</a> networking capabilities and it could feature <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/26/mediatek-dimensity-1000-5g-high-end-chip-launch/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MediaTek&#8217;s Dimensity 1000 5G SoC</a>.</p>
<figure id="attachment_291409" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-291409" style="width: 717px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-291409 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mediatek-5g.png?x44794" alt="Redmi K30" width="717" height="480" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mediatek-5g.png 717w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mediatek-5g-300x201.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mediatek-5g-696x466.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/mediatek-5g-627x420.png 627w" sizes="(max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-291409" class="wp-caption-text">MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC</figcaption></figure>
<p>Lu Weibing, the Redmi General Manager, officially revealed that the 5G successor to Redmi K20 series will be the Redmi K30 series on his <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/weibo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Weibo</a> page. On the Chinese social microblogging website, the senior executive announced only the aforementioned features but didn&#8217;t divulge any finer details regarding the specifications of the upcoming flagship smartphone.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/26/mediatek-dimensity-1000-scores-over-500k-points-on-antutu/">MediaTek Dimensity 1000 scores over 500k points on AnTuTu</a></strong></h6>
<p>However, on his official Weibo account, Lu Weibing also congratulated MediaTek for the new Dimensity 1000 SoC. The chipset is the latest high-end mobile SoC from the MediaTek which is also capable of 5G networking. Previously, Redmi and MediaTek had partnered for the Redmi Note 8 Pro which featured the latter&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek-helio-g90t/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">G90T SoC</a>. Hence, the extension between business relations could very well see the Redmi K30&#8217;s Pro variant featuring the Dimensity 1000 SoC. On the other hand, the standard K30 variant may feature a<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/09/06/qualcomm-700-600-series-chipset-integrated-5g/"> 5G enabled Snapdragon 700 series</a> processor from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/qualcomm/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Qualcomm</a>.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the device through which the congratulatory message was uploaded was from a Redmi K30 handset, further hinting towards the partnership.</p>
<figure id="attachment_291572" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-291572" style="width: 520px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-291572 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Redmi-K30-Pro-5G-hint.png?x44794" alt="Redmi K30 Pro 5G + MediaTek Dimensity 1000hint" width="520" height="486" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Redmi-K30-Pro-5G-hint.png 520w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Redmi-K30-Pro-5G-hint-300x280.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Redmi-K30-Pro-5G-hint-449x420.png 449w" sizes="(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-291572" class="wp-caption-text">Lu Weibing&#8217;s Official Post on Weibo</figcaption></figure>
<p>Notably, the move to MediaTek from Snapdragon also makes sense from a strategic standpoint. The <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/11/snapdragon-865-configuration-leaks-features-a77-based-performance-cores/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Snapdragon 865</a> chipset is yet to be officially unveiled and considering the Redmi K30 series launches this December, MediaTek 1000 SoC is a viable alternative. Furthermore, Qualcomm&#8217;s high-end chipset generally has high demand owing to the fact that multiple major brands incorporating its processor in their flagship offerings. So, Redmi wouldn&#8217;t simply wait for the supply of the new generation of Qualcomm processors.</p>
<p>The MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G is a really capable chipset. In fact, the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/11/26/mediatek-dimensity-1000-scores-over-500k-points-on-antutu/">scored over 500K on AnTuTu benchmark recently</a> which isn&#8217;t surprising given its four Cortex-A77 power cores. And if Redmi decides to use this MTK chip inside the K30 Pro, it would mark yet another major win for the Taiwanese chipmaker, after making a comeback in the market with the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/xiaomi-redmi-note-8-pro/">Redmi Note 8 Pro</a> earlier this year.</p>

MediaTek wants to change this with its new 5G SoC. For some reason, this Taiwanese chipmaker has decided to call it simply as the <strong>MediaTek 5G SoC. </strong>The company unveiled the new chipset at Computex Taiwan earlier today.</p>
<figure id="attachment_256044" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-256044" style="width: 1700px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC.jpeg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-256044" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC.jpeg?x44794" alt="Mediatek 5G SOC" width="1700" height="924" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC.jpeg 1700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-300x163.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-768x417.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-1024x557.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-696x378.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-1068x580.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Mediatek-5G-SOC-773x420.jpeg 773w" sizes="(max-width: 1700px) 100vw, 1700px" /></a><figcaption id="caption-attachment-256044" class="wp-caption-text">MediaTek 5G SOC</figcaption></figure>
<p>Unlike current smartphones in the market which use a two-chip 5G solution (like the Snapdragon X50 modem), the MediaTek 5G SoC features an integrated modem. Plus, the SoC comes with multi-mode support which means there&#8217;s no need for an additional LTE modem. This support allows the MediaTek&#8217;s 5G chip to connect to anything from 2G to 4G when the new-age <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/5g">5G</a> connectivity is not available. If you remember, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/02/19/qualcomm-announces-2nd-gen-snapdragon-x55-5g-modem-with-up-to-7gbps-download-speed/">Qualcomm&#8217;s second-generation modem, the Snapdragon X55</a> is an integrated one-chip solution and comes with multi-mode support. However, it&#8217;ll only be available by 2020, around the same time as MediaTek&#8217;s 5G modem will be available in smartphones.</p>

<p>5G isn&#8217;t the only highlight of the new MediaTek SoC. The chip is actually pretty capable too, thanks to the new-age Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU. These two designs were <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/27/arm-arm-announces-cortex-a77-cpu-and-mali-g77-gpu/">announced by ARM a couple of days back</a> and boast increased processing power and efficiency as compared to its predecessors. The chip also comes with the APU (<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ai">AI</a> Processing Unit) 3.0 which adds new features such as real-time autofocus, auto exposure, auto white balance, photo de-blurring, and beautification. Other notable features include support for 80MP camera sensors and 4K video encoding and decoding at 60fps.</p>
<p>Talking about its 5G capabilities, the SoC supports downloads up to 4.7Gbps and uploads up to 2.7Gbps. The new MediaTek 5G modem supports sub-6Ghz frequencies, which the company expects to be more widely used than mmWave frequencies around the world. This is one way how the new SoC cuts costs and makes it more affordable than current solutions.</p>
<p>Expect to see the new <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/mediatek">MediaTek</a> 5G SoC in affordable flagships and premium mid-rangers. The chip will be available in Q3 2019 and phones with this SoC is said to hit the markets around early 2020.</p>
