3D bioprinting is a cutting-edge technology that enables the fabrication of living tissues and organs using a specialized 3D printer. It involves the precise layer-by-layer deposition of biomaterials and living cells to create complex three-dimensional structures that mimic the architecture and function of natural tissues and organs. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the fields of regenerative medicine, drug discovery, and personalized healthcare by allowing researchers to create functional tissues and organs for transplant, drug testing, and disease modelling. However, another new implication of 3D bioprinting has come to light.

Printing electronic devices inside the human body is no longer just a thing of science fiction. Scientists have demonstrated a breakthrough in 3D printing technology by creating conductive circuits inside living organisms. The discovery was made by John Hardy at Lancaster University in the UK and his colleagues, who published their research in the latest issue of “Advanced Materials Technology”.

In experiments with Caenorhabditis elegans, a tiny worm with a simple nervous system, metal nanoparticles were deposited in circuits or patterns using a custom-made 3D printer and a weak electric current, while fluorescent dyes were added to the nanoparticles to enable the circuit to glow.

The technology could enable the creation of electronic devices inside living organisms, such as brain-computer interfaces or neurostimulators. The devices could be used to treat neurodegenerative or nervous system-related disorders, and to monitor physiological signals or chemical reactions within the body. Further development and testing are required, but the breakthrough has enormous implications for medical research and treatment.

According to an ITHome report, the Chinese tech giant’s technology making it on the list officially signifies the company’s entry into the field of medical equipments. As per the data from the State Food and Drug Administration, the Huawei smartwatch’s ECG sensor belongs in the second category of medical equipment, with its registration certificate number “20202071705.”

Back in May 2021, He Gang, the president of Huawei’s consumer business smartphone product line, stated that the company’s first smartwatch that supports blood pressure tracking has passed medical device registration tests. Furthermore, the company’s new technology will also start registered clinical trials with professional medical institutions within the next six months. According to the Guangdong Food and Drug Administration, the brand has three other medical devices that have entered the priority approval process.

This includes the wrist ECG blood pressure tracker (MLY-B10, MLY-B11), ECG analysis system (ECG-1), and heart rate disturbance analysis system (PPG-1). While the current generation of smart wearables include a number of health monitoring systems, these are not used for medical diagnoses. Additionally, only a few brands have obtained the second class certificate for medical equipments, namely Huawei, Apple, Huami, and Oppo.

According to TheElec report, the electronic nose from Dreamtech has been co developed with an Israeli form called Nanoscent. This device can basically detect if a patient or subject has contracted COVID-19 by analyzing their breath. It is able to achieve this by detecting the volatile organic compound in their breath. Notably, this gadget can also be effective in detecting cases where the patients is asymptomatic.

Dreamtech seeks to produce the solutions in South Korea within the first half of 2021. At the moment, the company is also preparing for approvals of authorities from various governments across multiple countries. The company also stated that even ordinary people, which could even be staff at companies, could be trained to perform the tests after using the electronic nose after just an hour of training.

Dreamtech said that trials have shown that tests showcase a similar result as PCR. Furthermore, the company with Nanoscent will also be testing solutions in four English football teams, including the Tottenham Hotspur. If this is approved in various nations, the time required for obtaining these results will be shortened by a large margin. Effectively, this could simply act as a device in place of thermal temperature mapping guns.

For those unaware, a new strand of Coronavirus has been a cause of major alarm across the globe. The virus originated from China and has been confirmed in upwards of 178 countries as of right now. It has been categorized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is a highly infectious virus. But now, Nagasaki University after teaming up with the Canon Medical Systems and the National Institute of Infectious Diseases has developed a new quick and efficient testing method.

UP NEXT: MIUI 11 Developer Edition for Mi 9 adds Document Scan, Clipboard Permission, Super Power Saver Mode, and more

The method is currently undergoing clinical trials in the Nagasaki Prefecture, which has just recently seen its first confirmed report of the Coronavirus infection. The test kit takes the form of a portable tool which is compact and weighs just 2.4kg. The gadget requires just a swab from the patient’s nose or throat or any genetic material which may have traces of the virus and uses a fluorescent dye to illuminate the infection for the researchers.

The kit requires less time to bring the vital materials to detectable levels than in a standard polymerase chain-reaction tests. For a fully accurate level of detection, the test can take up to 40 minutes from start to finish and can allow a single unit to test up to 700 unique samples in a single day. Given it runs the entire day non stop. The system is currently in the Nagasaki University and is being planned to be distributed to various university hospitals and other medical institutions in Japan.

The telecom giant Huawei is not the only Chinese firm to donate medical supplies to foreign countries. Previously, Lenovo, Alibaba, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others have contributed so far for the greater good. Wang Jianfeng, chairman of Huawei Japan said that he hopes to help the Japanese people get through difficult times. It is worth noting that even Japan helped China when the coronavirus outbreak began two months back.

David Kenny, the deputy chief executive of Huawei Ireland said that COVID-19 knows no border or nationality and everyone is in this together. He further said that Huawei is operating its business in Ireland for 15 years and thus it will do everything it can do to help as it is doing in other European countries. He added that the company’s donations will help the people working on the frontline as well as in the ICT department for video conferencing.

With that being said, the precise number of units and shipping methods are yet to be determined, however, Mr. Kenny assures that his company has teams in both China and Dublin working to bring the equipment as quickly as possible.
