We are looking forward to the first phone to come from Meitu and Xiaomi‘s partnership this year but while we wait, Meitu has released a new version of its V7 flagship.

The new Meitu V7 Garden Butterfly is a limited time edition version of its 2018 flagship. Unlike the other two color variants which have Orange and Green leather on their back, this version is covered in pink leather. Though like the others, it is mixed with white leather at the top. However, it ditches the orange metal accents for gold.

The price remains the same at ¥4799 and the specs are also the same but it appears only limited quantities are available. So if you are interested in picking up a unit, you can do so on the official website here.

The Meitu V7 is the first smartphone with triple front-facing cameras. It is a combination of a 12MP Sony IMX363 camera, a 20MP Sony IMX350 ultra clear camera, and an 8MP Sony IMX355 camera for capturing depth details. The cameras sit above a 6.21-inch FHD+ AMOLED display. There is a fingerprint scanner below the screen flanked by breathing lights on each side. There are tons of camera features including its own version of super night scene mode which Meitu said will arrive via an OTA back when it launched,

The rear of the phone is home to a dual camera setup that consists of a 12MP Sony IMX363 primary sensor and an 8MP Sony IMX 355 secondary sensor. The cameras on both sides of the phone have OIS and the ones on the rear are flanked on each side by an LED flash. This is Meitu we are talking about here, so no surprises about the cameras.

Under the hood of the Meitu V7 is a Snapdragon 845 processor that is paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It packs a 3,500mAh battery with support for 5V 3.6A fast charging. There is a dedicated audio chipset for Hi-Fi audio and it runs MEIOS 4.5 which is based on Android Pie out of the box.

In the previous month, Xiaomi had entered a strategic partnership with Meitu which allowed it to use the Meitu brand name for the forthcoming Meitu phones. The cooperation between the two companies excludes the Meitu V7 smartphone that has gone official today in China. The Meitu V7 comes in two models, standard edition and the premium Tonino Lamborghini edition. Here is all the information on the specifications, features and pricing of the Meitu V7 models.

Meitu is well-known for selling topnotch selfie-centric smartphones and the newly unveiled Meitu V7 doesn’t disappointment in this department. It features 12-megapixel night shot camera + 20-megapixel ultra wide-angle lens and 8-megapixel depth sensor. The triple selfie camera sensors allow Meitu V7 users to capture high quality selfie shots in dim-lighting conditions thanks to the exclusive imaging algorithm of the company and AI. The rear side of the smartphone features 12-megapixel + 8-megapixel dual camera setup that is blessed with features like OIS and EIS. Meitu has placed dual-LED flash units on the either sides of the dual camera sensors.

The Meitu V7 features a 6.21-inch notch-less OLED screen with thick bezels around it. It produces full HD+ resolution. The Snapdragon 845 chipset and 8 GB of RAM are present under the hood of the device. The smartphone is loaded with Android 9 Pie OS It is one of the few flagship phones in the recent times that features a home-button enabled fingerprint scanner. The smartphone is packed with a 3,500mAh battery.

The Meitu V7 features a specially customized high-quality embossed calfskin leather which gives it a premium appeal. There are three lines of metal rivets as well as four 18k gold-plated rivets. The handset comes with 128 GB of storage and it is priced at 4,799 Yuan. The handset can be availed in Cabernet Orange and Green Dream colors.

The Meitu V7 Tonino Lamborghini includes the same specs and leather design as the regular version but sports a more premium appeal. It features a red colored metallic frame. The red, white and green stitching that runs below the “meitu” logo is inspired from the Italian flag. The rear glass around the dual camera setup has a carbon fiber texture appeal around it. A metal plated “Tonino Lamborghini” logo is placed on the rear along with four 18k gold-plated rivets.

The Meitu V7 Tonino Lamborghini is a limited-edition model that comes in two storage choices of 256 GB and 512 GB that are respectively priced at 8,888 Yuan (~$1,289) and 10,888 Yuan (~$1,579). Customers who reserve the 256 GB variant can avail it at a discounted price tag of 6,799 Yuan (~$985).

The pre-orders of the Meitu V7 Tonino Lamborghini limited-edition will begin on Dec. 24. The official sales of ther Meitu V7 standard version and the Meitu V7 scheduled to begin on Jan. 9, 2019.

Meitu might be a lesser known company outside of China, but the company made headlines a few weeks back when it announced a strategic partnership with Xiaomi (full details here!) wherein it granted an exclusive global license to the popular smartphone maker to use its branding and certain technologies in relation to all of its upcoming smartphones, except one — the Meitu V7. At that time, we had only seen this device in TENAA images, as it was yet to be revealed, but today, the company decided to officially announce its existence.

The new teaser poster for the Meitu V7 confirms the triple front camera design that we had earlier seen in its TENAA leak. Meitu’s smartphones are all about selfies and beautifying features, so it’s not surprising to see that they decided to add three cameras right on top of the display. The company continues to keep its signature ‘V’ styling on the new model as well, and the back is adorned by leather with dual cameras. Like most other Meitu products, the V7 is also designed to stand out of the crowd in terms of its design. Nothing is subtle about the device and if you take a look at the earlier released TENAA images, the design is quite flashy.

Meitu also reveals that the V7 will get a special Tonino Lamborghini edition. Before you get too excited know that it’s not another partnership with a sports car maker. Unless you know the difference between Tonino Lamborghini and Automobili Lamborghini brands, it’s very easy to mistake that this is a partnership like OPPO’s Lamborghini edition or OnePlus 6T’s McLaren edition. However, Meitu V7’s partnership is with the luxury accessories maker, also known for its luxury smartphones (remember the Lamborghini Alpha One?). We still don’t know how this special Tonino Lamborghini edition will come to be, but we’ll hear more details in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately, Meitu hasn’t given us a release date for the V7 yet. So, all we can do is wait for more details. Last week, it was reported that Xiaomi had entered into a partnership with its fellow smartphone manufacturer, Meitu. Full details of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement, as the partnership is being referred to, have been revealed by Meitu.

In an official document released by Meitu, Xiaomi will get an exclusive global license to use the Meitu brand name and global license of certain technologies and domain names in relation to all future Meitu branded smartphones excluding the Meitu V7 (this might be the upcoming triple camera phone that appeared on TENAA).

Xiaomi and Meitu will co-develop smartphones which may likely be launched under a third sub-brand and targeted at female users. The document says the phones will be designed, developed, manufactured, marketed, and sold by Xiaomi while Meitu will provide the imaging technology and algorithms used in them.

Apart from smartphones, Xiaomi will also be able to manufacture other products with the Meitu brand name except for “skin-related smart hardware products” (We have no idea what Meitu means by this).

The partnership will be split into two phases:

1. Phase 1 – There will be a specified quantity of co-developed smartphones to be sold. When Xiaomi reaches this pre-determined figure, it will pay Meitu 10% of the gross profit share for each phone sold. This will continue until Meitu has received, within a 5 year period, a cumulative gross profit share of a specified amount or a total payment of the specified amount from Xiaomi. At the end of this period, Xiaomi may decide to continue with the partnership which will proceed to phase 2 or terminate the partnership.
2. Phase 2 – Meitu says Xiaomi will pay it a specified amount for each co-developed smartphone sold for a period of 30 years which is subject to an annual minimum guaranteed amount of USD 10 million.

For other co-developed products (non-phones), Meitu is entitled to 15% of the gross profit share from the sale of each item for a period of 30 years.

In the official document, Meitu revealed it has sold 3.5 million smartphones since it ventured into the business in 2013. While that is a small figure, Meitu says it is proud of it considering the small size of its business team. However, the need to grow its user-base has led to its decision to work with a partner, in this case, Xiaomi.

The choice in picking Xiaomi is because of its record smartphone sales (over 100 million units sold from January 2018 to October 31, 2018) and its large IoT platform which has 132 million smart devices excluding phones and computers as at the end of Q3 2018.

Meitu also revealed that the co-developed phones will come pre-installed with Meitu’s own photo and social network apps which should result in a growth in their user base.

There is no info on when the first co-developed phone will hit the market but we are pretty sure it won’t be this year. Anyway, we are pretty excited to see what Xiaomi comes up with.
