Staying true to its minimalistic design, the phone slims down the bezels on the side and adds a horizontal camera housing at the back featuring four cameras in total.
Meizu 17 & Meizu 17 Pro Design

The company also justified its decision to add a 2.9mm diameter camera on the top right corner because it believes this position creates the least amount of visual interference. Meizu explained at the event that we are used to reading from left to right and having the selfie camera on the right won’t hinder our reading experience. Furthermore, the company is making full use of the punch-hole camera by using it as a battery indicator. The phone also boasts of stereo speakers and Meizu claims that the sound output has increased by 30% as compared to its predecessor.

Meizu 17 & Meizu 17 Pro Specs

Both the models come with the flagship 2.84GHz Snapdragon 865 5G chipset under its hood with support for SA /NSA 5G. The company employs a new mSmart 5G technology inside its new flagships which reportedly improves its battery life when using the new-age cellular network. Meizu claims that mSmart 5G is fast and stable, so the Meizu 17 can last up to 4 hours and 25 minutes longer after turning on this special mode as compared to the regular 5G mode. The phone’s battery efficiency is also attributed to the 360-degree surround antenna design that will ensure a stable network connection.

The Meizu 17 has 8GB RAM onboard with up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The biggest difference between the standard and the Pro model is the presence of LPDDR5. The Meizu 17 Pro comes with the new-age LPDDR5 standard and UFS 3.1 as standard across its variants. Meizu claims that the Pro version’s AnTuTu score goes up to 600K.

The Meizu 17 and the 17 Pro feature a 4500mAh battery inside with 30W Super mCharge fast charging technology that promises 56% in half an hour. Meizu claims that the Meizu 17 can easily outlast other flagships like Huawei P40 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10, and OPPO Find X2 Pro in a typical battery test – all thanks to its mSmart 5G technology. Note that only the Pro model comes with the Super Wireless mCharge 27W charging solution that can charge up to 47% in 30 minutes. The Pro model also supports reverse wireless charging.

The new Meizu flagship comes with mEngine 3.0 that improves the gaming performance of the device. This f/2.2 aperture lens can capture extremely wide 129° camera samples.
In the series of Weibo posts, the Chinese company revealed certain specs regarding the upcoming flagship alongside an image that showcased the smartphone’s entire front side. Looking at the image, the Meizu 17 has a full screen body on the front, but with a punch hole selfie camera on the top right of the device. Its display curved around the edges and overall the design follows a typical Meizu form factor. The bezels of the device are thin as well, with its chin being and notch also being only slightly noticeable.

Under the hood, the Meizu 17 sports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC. It is a 5G processor that is capable of the faster bandwidth thanks to the X55 5G modem that arrives with it. This modem allows for download speeds up to 2,457Mbps and supports SA/NSA dual mode 5G network. The device is powered by a large 4,500mAh battery, which should help the phone get through an entire day even with 5G enabled.

The Meizu 17 will also support mSmart technology, which will basically allow the device to smartly switch between connections to find the most optimized network speed and battery life performance. In other words, it could help improve battery life over extended use or allow for faster download speeds when needed. The device will also support Wi-Fi 6 with download speeds up to 4,151 Mbps. This standard brings more stability, lower latency and more to the table.

Meizu is also emphasizing on secure 5G payments and other intelligent app distribution on the device. This will be included alongside all of the quality of life improvement each new generation arrives with. The Meizu 17 is slated to be announced on 22nd April 2020. So stay tuned as we will be covering its launch.

The Meizu 17 will hit as Meizu’s 17th-anniversary flagship model and is expected to have a redefined design. Meizu has over the years refused to adopt a display cut-out design rather, they have stuck with symmetrical design in line with the philosophy of its founder Jack Wang.

The Meizu 17 may deviate slightly from that style if this leaked photo of the device is anything to go by. The leak shows the device will have a punch-hole at the top right corner of the display. What makes this even more interesting is that the punch-hole camera will be surrounded by a ring LED indicator which displays the battery level. The indicator may also display perhaps in different colours when the device is charging. The location of the punch-hole is different from what obtains on most smartphones where the selfie camera cut-out is located at the top left corner. With this design, the indicator is rightly located close to the signal strength indicator and the clock is then retained in its traditional top-left location.

The Meizu 17 is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor and will support 5G connectivity as well as WiFi 6. The flagship device is equally expected to have an in-display fingerprint scanner. It will definitely run Android 10 but then that will be with the company’s FlymeOS skin on top of it. We’ll have to wait for more details to know if it will feature 90Hz refresh rate.

UPDATE: Persons familiar with the internal operations at Meizu have revealed some of the key specs of the Meizu 17. The device is said to have a screen size between 6.4-6.5 inches with FHD+ resolution. The device is also said to have support for 90Hz refresh rate as well as an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. The flagship will come with an 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant and will use the new LPDDR5 memory and UFS3.0 flash memory. The Meizu 17 will pack a 4500mAH battery with support for 30W wired fast charging and 30W wireless fast charging.

That is the reason why despite the notch design trend which has been deployed to trim down the bezels and deliver full-screen designs by OEMs, Meizu has stayed off using the design. Whether the decision not to join the design trend is for the best interest of the company or not is a debate for another day. What interests us now is speculation that the Chinese company may continue its perfectly symmetrical design on the Meizu 17. A leaked render said to be of the Meizu 17 points in this direction.

The render shows the Meizu 17 will retain the slim bezels used on the Meizu 16 series. Just that this time around, the top and bottom bezels will be trimmed down further to almost the same size as the side bezels. This means we’ll be seeing a higher screen ratio on the 17. The screen will also be curved slightly at the sides.

EDITOR’S PICK: Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha display units now available at select Chinese Mi Stores

The Meizu 17 will retain the micro-slot earpiece design on the Meizu 16 series. Also, of interest is the front camera which still finds its way into the slim bezel at the top edge, tucked into the upper right corner. Since the available space is quite small, Meizu would need to use a sensor with a smaller size. At present, the only sensor that fits the description is Samsung’s new 43.7MP ISOCELL slim GH1 image sensor which has a single pixel size of only 0.7μm.

In addition, according to the previous leaks, Meizu 17 will likely come with a triple rear camera setup. The main camera is likely Samsung’s 64MP sensor. There is no much detail about the Meizu 17 at the moment but we expect more to emerge a the day roll by.

The phone will no doubt be a beauty to behold just like the Meizu 16S Pro.
