The relationship between smartphone manufacturers and the automotive industry is growing stronger. For example, Xiaomi is gearing up to launch its own electric vehicle, and Apple is also working on a car. Other big companies are looking for ways to make more money in this space, and smaller companies are getting involved too. Most recently, Polestar and Meizu have teamed up to create an EV operating system. Here are the details…

Polestar Partners with Geely’s Meizu to Build Chinese Operating System

Although many of us know Meizu for its smartphones, the company is striving to be much more than that. The company which was purchased by Geely due to financial troubles some time ago. and it is now working with Polestar to develop an operating system for Polestar cars sold in China. This new operating system will be based on Meizu’s Flyme Auto system and will bring the latest smart technologies in Polestar vehicles.

According to the reports, Polestar and Meizu have formed a joint venture called Xingji Meizu. The venture will be funded with $98 million from Polestar and $102 million from Meizu. Polestar will own 49% of the venture, and Meizu will own 51%. Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said that he expects the new software to be quickly integrated into Polestar vehicles and that it will put the company on a “completely different level” compared to its Chinese EV competitors. He said that Polestar “definitely struggles” to be competitive in China, but that partnering with Meizu will be a “positive step.”

The partnership between Polestar and Meizu is a sign of the growing importance of software in the automotive industry. As EVs become more popular, automakers are increasingly looking to software to differentiate their products and provide a better user experience. The new operating system is expected to be launched in China in 2024. It will then be rolled out to other markets in the future.

Last year, Meizu was acquired by Geely, China’s largest private automaker and Volvo’s parent company. Following the acquisition, there were rumors that Meizu was planning to develop software that could enable effortless connectivity between smartphones and cars. Turns out the rumors were true after all as the company today unveiled the Flyme Auto in-vehicle software, which indeed boasts several features for seamless connectivity. Here are the details.

Flyme Auto is claimed to feature many desktop and seamless connection features. For one, it supports the transfer of mobile apps to the car and can be automatically connected once you pair your phone with your vehicle. It supports seamless relay, mobile phone-assisted updates, mobile phone-car hardware interoperability, and shared hardware capabilities. It comes with a search feature, which allows you to locate your car in a parking lot or on the street through your phone.

Further, Flyme Auto includes many car-specific apps that may be helpful for users. Additionally, it supports Alipay payment and features an upgraded virtual assistant called “Aicy.” This assistant can perform a variety of tasks through voice commands and supports offline voice recognition, and wake-up-free activation for frequently-used functions. Notably, the assistant can remember previous conversations and use that information to understand the current conversation better.

Flyme Auto has an intuitive interface and a design inspired by nature. According to Meizu, cars that use Flyme Auto will have access to a wider range of software and bring sustainable improvements to multi-terminal, full-scenario, and immersive experiences.

Meizu unveiled the new Flyme Auto software alongside its latest flagship series, the Meizu 20. This new lineup not only marks Meizu’s return to the smartphone market but also boasts cutting-edge specifications.
