Nearly six months after we first heard of the Meizu 15 Plus, Meizu has finally taken the wraps off the phone along with its siblings – the Meizu 15 and Meizu M15. It has been a long wait but a worthy one.

Design

In a world filled with 18:9 displays with or without notches, Meizu has decided not to follow the bandwagon. It has chosen the traditional 16:9 display and has built an impressive device around it.

The Meizu 15 is the beginning of a new era of design for Meizu phones. The home key called the mBack button has been redesigned. It is no longer shaped like a pill but is now a circle. It still houses the fingerprint scanner and can be used for navigation.

Employing a symmetric design, right at the same spot on the top bezel is the front-facing camera. Above the camera is a thin slit between the glass and the frame, within that slit is the earpiece.

While you may not see it, there are IR sensors on the left of the front camera and an ambient light sensor on the right. The Meizu 15 supports face unlock so this should be more secure than the ones found on other devices.

The rear is covered in aluminum and comes in four different colors – blue (Meizu 15 Only), gold, black, and a white version that looks like ceramic. Meizu has also given the antenna lines a nice Aztec-like design. The rear cameras sit in the middle and are slightly raised. There is also a 6-LED ring flash beneath them.

Meizu also does an amazing job keeping the thickness of the Meziu 15 at 7.25mm, the length at 72mm, and the weight at just 152g.

Specs

Meizu 15 and Meizu 15 Plus – The Meizu 15 has a 5.46” FHD display while the Meizu 15 Plus has a larger 5.95” 2K display. Both are Samsung Super AMOLED screens and are reported to have cost millions of dollars to be made into those custom sizes.

The Meizu 15 is powered by the Snapdragon 660 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. The Plus variant is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8895 processor. This is the same 10nm octa-core processor found in the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note8. The 8895 is paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of storage.

Both phones are equipped with the same rear cameras. The main sensor is a 12MP Sony IMX380 1.55um sensor, the same sensor found in the Huawei P20. The secondary camera is a 20MP Sony IMX350 wide-angle sensor for 3x lossless zoom. There is 4-axis optical image stabilization combined with Rainbow’s multi-frame synthesis technology for superior low-light images. There is also smart scene recognition and panorama mode.

The front camera is also a 20MP sensor with 4-in-1 synthetic pixels, smart AI beauty mode, and portrait mode.

The Meizu 15 and 15 Plus have stereo speakers. The home button/fingerprint scanner is pressure sensitive just like the Galaxy S8. It uses a dedicated pressure-sensitive chip that works with a new technology called mEngine to provide haptic feedback.

There is a USB-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a speaker grille at the bottom. The Meizu 15 has a 3000mAh battery and the Meizu 15 Plus has a 3500mAh battery. Both support Meizu’s 24W mCharge fast charge technology.

The Meizu 15 is priced at ¥2499 for the 4GB + 64GB model and ¥2799 for the 4GB + 128GB model. The Meizu 15 Plus is ¥2999 for the 6GB+64GB and ¥3299 for the 6GB+128GB model.

They will be available on JD.com, Suning, and Meizu’s official site on April 29.

Meizu M15 – this is the phone we’ve always known as the Meizu 15 Lite but Meizu has decided to launch it as the M15. It packs less powerful specs and has a much affordable price tag.

The display is the same 5.46” size with a 1080p resolution like the Meizu 15 but it is LCD and not AMOLED. It is powered by a Snapdragon 626 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

It also has a 20MP front-facing camera and a 12MP rear camera with a ring flash. It has a 3,000mAh battery and supports fast charging too.

The Meizu M15 will sell for ¥1699 and will be available in white, black, and red adn will also go on sale on April 29.

Today, a leaked document containing the entire specs of the Meizu 15 series has appeared on Weibo. Here is all the information that is listed on the leaked document:

Meizu 15 Plus

The Meizu 15 Plus features a 5.95-inch OLED display that supports QHD resolution. The Exynos 8895 SoC powers the smartphone along with 6 GB of RAM. It can be availed in 64 GB and 128 GB storage models. For photography, it features f/1. 8 aperture 12-megapixel + 20-megapixel dual camera setup. The primary sensor has a pixel size of 1.5µm. Its 3,500mAh battery supports mCharge 12V/2A fast charging.

Meizu 15

A 5.46-inch OLED display that produces Full HD resolution is available on the Meizu 15. The Snapdragon 660 SoC powers the smartphone along with 4 GB of RAM. It can be availed in 64 GB and 128 GB storage choices. It features the same dual camera setup that is available on the 15 Plus. It also supports mCharge fast charging for its 3,000mAh battery. The exact charging rate is not clearly visible in the leaked document.

Meizu 15 Lite (mentioned as M15 in the image)

The Meizu 15 Lite has a Full HD resolution supporting LTPS IPS LCD display of 5.46 inches. The Snapdragon 626 SoC is supported by 4 GB of RAM. It has a native storage of 64 GB. The dual camera setup of the 15 Lite features an f/1.9 aperture 20-megapixel sensor with a pixel size of 1.4µm and a secondary 12-megapixel sensor. A 3,000mAh battery enabled with mCharge 9V/2A fast charging powers the phone.

The common features available on the Meizu 15 trio include side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Flyme 7 skinned Android (most probably Android Nougat), Wi-Fi 2.4G/5G, 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2.

Meizu will roll out the drums to celebrate 15 solid years in the electronics technology industry where it began with the manufacture of MP3 players. To mark its 15th year of existence, the tech giant is said to be planning the launch of an anniversary flagship phone which would have the design input of Meizu’s president Jeffery Wang. That model is said to be the M15 Plus (and the M15). Here’s what the Meizu M15 Plus looks like, as captured on leaked renders of the front and rear aspects of the device. The render images were shared by popular Weibo Chinese tipster @Ubuntu team who has got some level of credibility when it comes to leaks going by his antecedents. But then, we are not sure this is the final design the flagship would adopt.

The device comes with a curved edge design both at the front and back. There is no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor neither do we have the oblong-shaped mBack home button. The side fingerprint sensor used on the M6S wasn’t featured on the rendered design. Instead, there is a round-shaped home button similar to the iPhone’s button and which is believed to also house the fingerprint sensor. The device also packs a centrally placed selfie shooter. The position of the selfie shooter and the home button elicits doubts if the M15 Plus will pack a full screen 18:9 design. Well, except the renders do not depict the actual design.

At the rear, you’ll get a dual camera sensor arranged in the vertical direction while under the camera setup, is a unique round LED flash. Meizu has a reputation for innovative camera flash designs so this isn’t coming as a big surprise. The device also features its volume rockers at the left side of the display while the power button is located at the right side. The specifications of the M15 Plus is still shrouded in mystery. We don’t even know the processor it would pack. Whether Meizu will retain its patronage of MediaTek or would utilize its recent cooperation with Qualcomm to equip the flagship with a Snapdragon 845 chip. Still, the M15 Plus could utilize Samsung’s latest Exynos 9810 chip considering recent reports of Samsung selling its chipsets to other OEMs going forward. Besides, Meizu has always had a good alliance with Samsung.
