Meizu’s latest smartphone dubbed Meizu M6s is relatively a budget device which was launched in January with a price tag hovering around $150. The device is albeit spectacular in that it utilises the trending full-screen design with a curved glass over the display and its design looks attractive. Perhaps riding on the shoulders of the M6s’ attractive design, Meizu mounted a billboard in a bus stop in Beijing which was designed using over 200 units of the full-screen smartphone stacked in a landscape arrangement with the displays all functioning as a single unit.

This is no doubt an innovative concept especially since all the over 200 units formed a giant billboard promoting the new smartphone. It is an attractive sight to behold and indeed, it attracted passersby. Such was the attractiveness that it got bungled. Someone broke the glass covering the billboard and made away with some of the units. Meizu’s VP Li Nan made the disclosure himself on Weibo and from the photo shared, we could see that two of the units were stolen after the glass was broken.

Meizu’s Blue Charm official Weibo page called the billboard as probably the most expensive billboard per unit area in China. This may not be entirely correct but it sure is an expensive one and quite innovative.We are sure this is the first time the company is embarking on such venture. The billboard highlights the full-view display potential of the M6s as the individual display units fuse with each other quite seamlessly to form a big display and the bezels are not too obvious especially when viewed from afar. We’re sure Meizu will have to replace the stolen units and perhaps put some form of reinforcement or security in the vicinity to forestall a recurrence. We’re not sure Meizu will want to continue with such project considering what happened to this pilot billboard.

Meizu is yet to reveal when the global rollout will take place but while we wait for news on that, here are fresh unboxing pictures of the M6s Cobalt Blue colour variant.

The M6S was announced to come in four colour options which include; Gold, Gray, Black, and Blue. The Cobalt Blue colour variant adds some ambience and sleekness to the budget device. Apart from the front screen, all other parts of the device got the blue paint job, giving it some form of prominence. Even the U-shaped antenna band gets a Cobalt Blue colouring as well as the ring bordering the rear camera. The mblu and Meizu write up inscribed at the rear panel are also having a blue coloration but a darker shade.

As a reminder, the Meizu M6S, also known as Blue Charm S6, features a 5.7-inch 18:9 in-cell display with 1440 x 720p HD+ resolution. The screen boasts of 450 nits brightness, wide viewing angles and 1000:1 contrast ratio. The M6S happens to be the first device to feature Samsung’s Exynos 7872 processor built on 14nm process with two Cortex A73 performance cores and four Cortex A53 efficient cores as well as full Netcom. The processor is backed by 3GB of RAM while the device will be available in 32GB and 64GB of storage options. Meizu Wednesday went official with its newest smartphone meant to usher in a new era for the Chinese company. Meizu M6S comes with a full-screen design which stands out with the presence of an innovative on-screen mBack navigation button and a side fingerprint sensor.

Meizu M6S packs a single rear camera located at the centre of the device while there is an LED flash just under the device. The M6S features a Samsung 16MP CMOS sensor at the back with f/2.0 aperture, 112μm pixel area, PDAF, 5P lens, and a special HDR that’s developed by ArcSoft for the M6S. On the front, the phone features an 8MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture, ArcSoft algorithms, Intelligent facial brightness enhancement, and an adaptive beauty mode. A couple of camera samples shot on the Meizu model have been unearthed and they give us an idea of how the rear camera fares.

The camera samples are not really spectacular but decent enough for a device in the price category where the M6S falls into. In particular, the M6S camera performance in low light condition is impressive. This is an area where most smartphone cameras falter u the M6S’ is good. Meizu has finally taken the wraps off the much-anticipated Meizu M6S mid-range smartphone and it doesn’t disappoint. The device features a stylish design which is combined with exquisite craftsmanship to create a model having a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Here some hands-on photos of the device which we picked up from Weibo and it offers better views of the premium, cheap mid-ranger.

The full-screen design made it impossible for the traditional mBack button to be mounted at the front. Instead of using a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor design, Meizu chose to experiment with a side sensor which many manufacturers have been shying away from. The fingerprint sensor is touted as being able to unlock the device in just 0.2 seconds. The device packs on-screen navigation keys and the round home button at the middle still functions as the mBack button.

At the rear, the device doesn’t look very spectacular, as it adopts a design similar to what Meizu has done in the past. The M6S features a metal body with the U-shaped antenna band acting as borders at the top and bottom edges. At a time dual cameras rule the airwave, Meizu chose to stick to a single rear camera which is located at the center. There is a round-shaped LED flash just under the rear camera. And remarkably, the hands on photos show the presence of the mBlu ogo just underneath the LED flash at the back. Meizu’s official renders of the device released during its launch have the Meizu logo printed on the back. So, its either something changed at the last minute or we’ll see the mBlu branding on the Chinese models while the international models would bear the Meizu branding.

As for the prices, the Meizu M6S which available in Gold, Gray, Black, and Blue is priced at 999 Yuan ($155) for 3GB + 32GB model and 1199 Yuan ($186) for the 3GB + 64GB model. The smartphone will be available on JD.com, Meizu Mall, Lynx, and Suning on January 19 at 10:00AM for buyers in China. It will also be available for offline purchase on Meizu store and other retailers from January 20. There is no word yet on when the device will be available outside China. Meizu has commenced the release of daily countdown teasers for the M6S, also called mBlu S6, which is expected to be launched on January 17. The company has already released two teasers and the first could be of interest as it seems to point at the presence of an on-screen fingerprint sensor. Recall that a leaked video of the Meizu M6S in action had suggested that there may be a new unlock method which seems to be on the screen. This is despite the sighting of a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the device.

It is very much unlikely that the Meizu M6S would feature two types of fingerprint sensors, one on the screen and another at the side. There could be another explanation for the teaser. The teaser noted a change in the fingerprint sensor due to the device having a full-screen design. Since the smartphone is a full-screen one, the trademark Meizu mBack home button which doubles as a fingerprint sensor is absent. The picture shows a fingerprint icon on the screen of the device and that is what sends the impression that there could be an on-screen fingerprint sensor. However, the way the hand grips the smartphone may also be indicative of the side-mounted fingerprint sensor while the fingerprint icon on the screen may just be there to give a clue that the teaser is referring to the fingerprint sensor. We already know Vivo is the first to use the in-display fingerprint technology from Synaptics on its smartphone but there hasn’t been any word on Meizu using a similar technology.

As a reminder, Meizu M6S or mBlu S6 is expected to feature an expansive 5.7-inch 18:9 display with an HD= resolution of 1440 x 720p. The back features the U-shaped antenna band design while at the rear is the mBlu logo, which confirms that the S6 will be the first mBlu branded smartphone to be released by the company. The volume rocker buttons are located on the left side of the device while at the right side, you’ll find a power button and side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The M6S will be fired up by an Hexa-core Exynos 7872 (4 x A53 + 2 x A73) chip which is also one of the teasers released by Meizu on its Blue Charm account. The graphic is powered by a Mali-G71 GPU while the processor is paired with a 3GB RAM and there is 32GB of storage. In addition, there is a 3000mAh battery with 9V / 2A 18W fast charging support. Meizu was thought to launch its first full-screen smartphone on January 4 but it turns out the company only announced the launch date for the full-screen phone. We will now see the much-anticipated Meizu M6s on January 17, 2018. Apart from revealing the launch date, Meizu has also started sending out invitations to the launch event.

Meizu is known for sending out uniquely packaged invitations and this is no different. The Meizu M6s launch invitation contains a large blue brick with the words in Chinese translated as “Young good” embossed unto one of the surfaces. We can’t say what that means, anyway. The brick is similar to a real brick and is event also weighty as one.

It is as good as confirmed that the device that would be launched on that day is a full-screen Meizu M6s with the 18:9 aspect ratio. The device will not feature the mBack button as it utilises a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Further, the M6s is said to feature a 5.7-inch display and would be powered by a Samsung Exynos 7872 processor among other features. This is looking like a great device to look forward to.
