Today, Meizu announced that they will do a price cut to the popular Meizu MX3 smartphone in China. The 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions of the MX3 will soon cost 1299 RMB, 1399 RMB (227.84 USD), and 2099 RMB (341.83 USD), respectively.

The Meizu MX3 sports a Sony 8mp camera with an F2.0 aperture. The technology used for its camera allows the Meizu MX3 to high-quality photos in the dark. It is also worth mentioning that the 32GB and 64GB version are both NFC-supported, transforming your cellphone into a cellphone wallet or mass transportation card by using it to make payments.

Meizu has been releasing a smartphone every year since 2008, from the Meizu M8 to Meizu MX4, transforming from a MP3 manufacturer to a cellphone powerhouse. Here is a look at how far Meizu has gotten since the Meizu M8.

From the backs of all 6 phones, you can see that the designs of Meizu’s cellphones have changed constantly over the years, from a regular plastic rear case to the MX4’s furnished and polished rear case.       Every year, the screens of Meizu’s phones have gotten bigger and bigger from the Meizu M8’s 3.4-inch screen to the Meizu MX4’s 5.36-inch screen.

Meizu has been using metal chasses since the Meizu M8.

The design of the Home button of Meizu’s phones has also constantly changed over the years. The Meizu M8, Meizu M9, and Meizu MX all used physical Home buttons. From the Meizu MX2, the Home button has become a small round circle that you can simply touch to activate. It has since become a staple of Meizu’s phones.

Except for the Meizu M8 and Meizu M9 whose rear cameras were located at the upper left corner, the rear cameras in Meizu’s phones are located at the top middle part.

The Meizu M8 and Meizu M9 do not have front-facing cameras. Meizu only started adding one from the Meizu MX.

In all 6 phones, the speakers are not located at the back which can cause the user to block them when he puts down the phone.

Only the Meizu M9 and Meizu MX have the Chinese character logo.

The Meizu MX was the first to use a dual-layer plastic design. The Meizu MX2 and Meizu MX3 followed suit.

You have to use a tool to open the rear covers of the Meizu MX, Meizu MX2, and Meizu MX3, but the battery is unchangeable.

The batteries of the Meizu M8 and Meizu M9 are changeable. Apparently, unchangeable batteries were not yet in back then.

Even though you do not need a tool to open the Meizu MX4’s rear cover, the battery is still unchangeable.

The Meizu M8, Meizu M9, and Meizu MX all used physical Home buttons. As you can see, the Home button kept getting smaller until it became a round physical button in the Meizu MX and eventually replaced with the small Home circle.

When the Meizu M8 was formally launched in 2008, it sported a 3.4-inch screen, used the Samsung 6410 chip, and ran on the Windows CE OS.

The Meizu M9 was launched in 2009 and was Meizu’s first Android phone. It had a 3.54-inch 960 x 540 screen and the Samsung S5PC110 CPU.

The Meizu MX was launched in 2010 and was the first to use a dual-core CPU from Samsung. It had a 4-inch screen with a 960 x 640 resolution and was the first to have a built-in battery. Four versions were released of this phone and it was also the first to use the Flyme OS.

The Meizu MX2 was launched at the end of 2012 and had a 4.4-inch 1280 x 800 screen and a Samsung quad-core CPU. Its specs were pretty good and it was the first to not use a physical Home button, replacing it with the small circle. It also removed the menu and return buttons.

The Meizu MX3 looks very similar to the Meizu MX2 but it uses a 5.1-inch screen with a 1080 x 1800 resolution. At the same time, it also used the Samsung Exynos 5410 octa-core chipset.

The Meizu MX4 is the latest in Meizu’s MX series. It is the first to stop using a CPU from Samsung, replacing it with the MTK MT6595 octa-core CPU, and sports a 5.36-inch screen. It’s also more affordable than its predecessors, costing 1799 RMB (292.92 USD).

The Meizu MX4 has been one of the biggest hits this season since its launch on September 2 with its higher screen-to-body ratio, new Flyme upgrade, and excellent design. So what improvements have been made from the MX3? Here’s our comparison.

The MX4 looks bigger than the MX3 based on their measurements. The former’s are 144 x 75.2 x 8.99mm while the latter’s are 139.0 x 71.9 x 9.1mm. The MX4 also seems to be thicker than the MX3. The former’s screen makes up 80% of its front cover while the latter’s only makes up 74%.

The Meizu MX4 has kept Meizu’s classic small round circle  home button except it’s bigger. Another difference is that while you can swipe your finger upwards on the MX3’s home button to unlock it, you have to double click the MX4’s screen to  wake it up.

The design of the bottom sides of both phones are almost the same except that instead of using the MX3’s classic “panda” design (black front/white back), the MX4 uses a grey/black design.

The top sides for both phones are almost exactly the same except that the MX4’s antenna is more visible. Its signal is also stronger.

The MX4 sports a new 2mp front-facing camera with wide-angle lens, giving it a wider viewing range. Even though the MX3’s camera is also 2mp, they do not have a wide-angle lens. As a result, the quality of photos taken using the MX4 is much better than the MX3.

The MX4 sports a rear-facing 20.7mp Sony IMX 220 camera with an F/2.2 aperture. It also has dual-LED flash. On the other hand, the MX3 sports an 8mp camera with F/2.0 aperture and single LED flash.

The MX4 (8.9mm thickness) is only .2mm thinner than the MX3 (9.1mm).

You need a tool to open the MX3’s rear case. MX3’s back cover is much more difficult to take off. The batteries are not removable though.

MX4 uses the latest Flyme OS version — the Flyme 4.0 while the MX3 still uses the Flyme 3.8.

Yesterday, it was reported that a netizen successfully installed the Yun OS into their Mi 3. Now, not willing to let the Mi 3 enjoy all the fame and glory, someone also installed the Yun OS into their Meizu MX3. Does it work?

As the screenshots posted by this netizen show, the Yun OS’s lock screen, desktop, and notification bar are pretty clean and simple. Common features such as the Cloud Album and Safety Center are there. According to this netizen, his MX3 experienced high fluidity and better performance after installing the Yun OS 2.9.2.

In addition, the Yun OS is said to save more power than the Flyme OS but its unclear how long it can last. Many think that the snapshots are a sign that Meizu and Alibaba will work together.  nubia brand has suffered the critics from the Meize fans since launched, Huang Zhang even attacked publicly that the nubia cell phone is copycat brand. Here we are about to compare the nubia Z7 mini and mini MX3.

Nubia Z7 mini was released in July 2014, with the price of RMB1499; while Meizu MX3 was launched in September 2013, with the original price of RMB2499, and now is RMB1599 after one year, there is only 100 RMB gap between them.
Nubia Z7 mini uses 1920*1080 resolution 16:9 screen of  5.0 inches, with the 140.9*69.3*8.2mm dimensions, and the weight of 143g. Meizu MX3 applies 1800*1080 resolution 15:9 5.1 inches  screen, with  139*71.9*9.1mm dimensions, weight of 143g, the hardware difference between these two phones is very small, and both uses narrow border design, therefore both of these two phones have good single hand operation experience.

In the rear design, plastic materials are used for the main rear machine cover of these two machine, nevertheless Meizu MX 3 applies piano finish design, and is equipped with stainless steel border, which looks round and smooth. While Nubia Z7 mini follows the frosted rear cover design of Z5S mini, with more cutting design at the four sides, which feels more strength.

The  most disputed design between Meizu and Nubia is the “little circle” Home button, both of them considered the little circle as the design representative factor of appearance. Together with related gestures, the little circle in Meizu MX3 is capable of performing the functions of Return back, Exit, Set etc.; while in nubia Z7 mini, the little circle plus two other virtual buttons equals to the three virtual buttons of normal Android cell phone.

Meizu MX3 applied 800 Mpi camera, while  nubia Z7 mini uses 1300 Mpi Sony IMX214 stack camera. the parameter of Z7 mini camera is higher, and the MX3 of 800 Mpi is better in optimum photographic effect; while there are some interesting photographing functions in Z7 mini, such as star cloud, star track and light track. For the battery life, the battery capacity of nubia Z7 mini is 2300mAh, and Meizu MX3 is 2400mAh, both of them are unsatisfactory.

Because Meizu MX3 was launched last year, it is a pity that it can not support 4G LTE, while nubia Z7 mini is a dual SIM 4G phone.

Conclusion:
Meizu MX3 with the price of 1599 is competitive, and it is estimated that the price of MX3 would be decreased after MX4 is launched on Septembet 2nd, however, the Nubia Z7 mini with snapdragon801 is more powerful, the most competitive feature is dual SIM 4G LTE, therefore, it is recommended to choose the nubia Z7 mini which is  dual SIM 4G LTE.

There’s a new opponent for the manufacturers of high-end but affordable smartphones; move over Xiaomi, Meizu has arrived, with the promise of great things. The MX4 is due for release later this year and is to be a flagship device capable of direct competition with Xiaomi’s range in specifications and value for money. It is to be priced at a highly competitive 1999 Yuan ($321 US dollars). The purpose of the exercise, apparently, is for Meizu to prove to the world that it can do what Xiaomi do, and gain credibility. So what is this MX4 and can it really compete with the masters of this market?

The MX4 has some exemplary specifications, most notably with regard to the display. The 5.5 inch screen has an awe-inspiring 2560 x 1536 resolution. A pixel per inch ratio of 543 and that could easily make a media fan actually faint with joy. Other specs include 3GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 805 chipset and the photo capabilities are good; there’s a 16 megapixel rear and a 5 megapixel front-facing camera.

It was previously reported that the MX4 would exist in two forms, with the above version the high-end option: so don’t get overly excited about the price quite yet. There will be a lower specification model too, and that one we assume will have the $321 price tag and a more modest display capability of 5 inch 1080p. This means the MX4 is going to be in the same ball park price-wise as the OnePlus One. The Meizu MX4 is also reported to have LTE connectivity, it will be equipped with the newest version of Meizu’s overlay Flyme ROM, version 4.0.

Meizu are expanding into the US market with the MX3 available there at the moment through their website store. Hopefully the MX4 will be available there too soon. The progression of Meizu continues to excite, as they are rumoured to be working on another low-cost mid spec phone – one reportedly powered by a Mediatek MT6595, but we’ll have to wait for further information about that.

Meizu are not lagging behind and delaying with any updates nowadays. Keeping up with this, they have recently launched Flyme ROM update based on android 4.4 (KitKat) for its Meizu MX3.

Flyme 3.6.2a is the second in the series of 4.4 based update and is ready for download now. It is to be released on the flagship Samsung Exynos Octacore smartphone. With alteration made in the music, video, browser, contacts and Bluetooth apps, this update is merely a bug fix.

Even though I have not yet tried the android 4.4, it is claimed by the critics and users to have a greatly improved battery life and performance.

Apart from this, the other highlight by Meizu is they are close to breaking a 1 billion downloads record from the app store.

             On April 23, as companies from around the country held conferences showcasing their new products to compete with the Onplus One, Meizu officially announced that they would cut the price of the MX3 by ¥200 ($32.01), with the 16G, 32G, and 64G editions, now costing ¥1799 ($287.94), ¥1999 ($310.95), and ¥2399 ($383.97) respectively. It is seen as the beginning of Meizu’s price cuts of its ¥1999 domestic products. However, yesterday, Xiaomi announced that something big was going to happen soon which many assume to be a price reduction of the MI-3. 

         News of the MI-3’s price cut has now been confirmed because we just found out in Xiaomi’s official online store that the 16G edition would now be sold for ¥1699 ($271.94). Although we have not seen the 64G version, its price should also go down by ¥300 ($48.02) and cost ¥2199 ($351.96).

As of now, it is not clear whether Xiaomi will continue to sell the MI-3 in stores or bring back its policy of letting customers who made a prior reservation buy the phones online at a certain date. It is most likely going to be the former. Furthermore, this price reduction means that the MI-3’s successor, the 3S, is coming soon. Who’s looking forward to this?

Today Xiaomi has already made an announcement that they will release an unexpected yet logical hardware. According to news leaks, this may be similar to Apple’s touchpad, but other sources say it may be a wireless Bluetooth keyboard. And Nubia’s official Weibo has stated, “April 23, what must come, will come”, most likely referring to the 5.5-inch Nubia X6. The news says the model, as a whole, is the same basic X6 configuration. If this is true, then the device will also have two configurations – the Quadcomm Snapdragon 800 with 2GB RAM, or the Snapdragon 801 with 3GB RAM. The main camera is a 13 megapixel dual camera, running on the newest Nubia UI 2.0, and supports td/FDD LTE dual-4G.

Although Meizu has not announced the future launch of smart phones in the United States and specifications, but the foreign media speculation that should the Meizu will release the phone as similar with the current flagship Meizu MX3.

Meizu should be regarded as a pioneer of China’s first smart phone manufacturers, and Chinese smartphone products. The news that revealed that the new Meizu MX3 M355 will packs with 16GB of internal storage but did not packs with NFC technology. The new Meizu MX3 uses 5.1 inches screen with a resolution of 1080 X 1800 pixel resolution.

The Meizu MX3 offers a screen measuring 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1800 x 1080 pixels. This smart phone also comes with a pretty weird design with 15:9 display ratio. Interestingly, this smartphone has a very thin bezel, 2.9 millimeters.
