Benchmarking outfit AnTuTu has released a comprehensive list of the top-selling cost-effective models in various price categories in the month of May. The list contains several models, including the Redmi Note 5 and a few surprises like the Meizu Pro 7. The ranking of the best value for price ratio is calculated using the phone’s AnTuTu average score which is a factor of the chipset divided by the current price on the brand’s official flagship stores on Jingdong (JD.com).

The lists are for the most cost-effective models during the period ranging from May 1 to May 31 in four different price categories such as 0-999 yuan, 1000 yuan – 1999 yuan, 2000 yuan – 2999 yuan and over 3000 yuan category. Xiaomi is known for its pocket-friendly phones so, it isn’t much of a surprise that the Redmi Note 5 (3GB+32GB) tops the 0-999 yuan price category offering users a new Snapdragon 636 chip and 3GB RAM for less than 1000 yuan ($152). This is followed by the Redmi 5 (2GB+16GB). Other models include the Meizu M5s (3GB+32GB), 360 N6 Lite, Meizu X, Redmi 5 Plus, Honor 9 Lite and even the Redmi 5A (2GB+16GB). 

The 1000-1999 yuan price category sees the Meizu Pro 7 make a surprise appearance onboard the list. The 4GB+128GB version of the Pro 7 sits atop the price category as the best cost-effective model in May. This may be unconnected to the present selling price which is just around $300 for a phone with such a massive storage. The Meizu Pro 7 Plus (6GB+64GB) version is also priced in this category and is one of the cost-effective phones last month in China. The list also includes the Meizu Pro 6 Plus from 2016 and most spectacularly, the newly released Nokia X6. Other top-selling models in this price category include the Nubia Z17 mini, Xiaomi Redmi 6X, Mi Note 3, Mi Max 3, Nokia 7 Plus, Sharp AQUOS S2, OPPO A3.

2000 to 2999 yuan

In the 2000 – 2999 yuan price range, there are a total of 11 models on the list. Among them is the Honor V10 (4GB+64GB which is priced at 2299 yuan ($351) as well as the  Nubia Z17 (6GB+64GB) with the same 2299 yuan ($351), both having 90 points. The list also has the Snapdragon 845-powered Black Shark gaming phone (6GB+64GB) which is priced at 2999 yuan ($458).  

More than 3,000 yuan

Finally, the phones priced above 3000 yuan have five models considered to be cost-effective. The OnePlus 6 (6GB+64GB) version occupies the first spot in this category means it is the best cost-effective flagship model selling above 3000 yuan ($458) presently. Others include the Mi Mix 2s (6GB+64GB), Smartisan R1 (6GB+64GB), Huawei Mate 10 (4GB+64GB) and Sony Xperia XZ1 (4GB+64GB).

The good thing is some of these models are available to buy outside China like the OnePlus 6, Mezu Pro 7/7 Plus, the Redmi Note 5 and other Xiaomi models. In some cases, the prices on offer still give good value for money like the Redmi Note 5 which sells for around $189.99 on third-party retail websites. The OnePlus 6 has already launched globally and is selling amazingly well as a result of its cost-effective pricing when compared to the solid build and well-loaded specs lineup.

The Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus were expected to be game changers by Meizu. Both phones launched with an extra-screen on the back but that didn’t help them sell. The failure of the Meizu Pro 7 series led to a massive price slash by retailers and even Meizu itself, and the resignation of a few executives.

Less than a month after the Meizu Pro 7 went on sale, third-party sellers began to cut the price of the phone. China Telecom cut the price of the Pro 7 by ¥300 and that of the Pro 7 Plus by ¥400. Over the past few months, the prices have reduced further. As at the time of the 618 shopping festival, both phones were selling for half of their original price tags.

Speaking on the official Meizu forum, the CEO has admitted to being in charge of the Pro 7 series and its inventory during production. He also added that, following the failure of the Pro 7 series, they will be more conservative regarding the Meizu 16 slated for an August release.

Meizu had initially requested for 3 million units of the Pro 7 series to be delivered in three batches. After the first 1 million units were delivered, Meizu requested the remaining orders were canceled as it still had about 500,000 unsold units.

Meizu has today launched its new smartphone in the Indian market — the Meizu Pro 7. The phone was originally scheduled to launch in November last year but it was delayed because of logistics issues. The Meizu Pro 7 was originally introduced in China in July last year.

In its announcement, the company has just announced the launch of Meizu Pro 7 and not the Pro 7 Plus variant. Priced at Rs. 22,999 (approximately $354) in India, the smartphone will be available in only Black color, exclusively through Amazon India in limited stocks.

One of the highlights of the phone is that it features two displays — one on the front and another one on the back panel. On the front side, there’s a 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with 1920 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and a 1.9-inch secondary Super AMOLED display at the back that support a screen resolution of 240 x 536 pixels.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by a 2.5GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 processor along with Mali-T880 GPU and 4GB RAM. There’s a 64GB internal memory. There’s a microSD card slot for further expanding the storage capacity. It has a fingerprint sensor at the back for added security and comes with a Cirrus Logic CS43130 Smart PA amplifier.

On the camera front, the phone features a dual camera at the back, which consists of a 12-megapixel monochrome lens and a 12-megapixel RGB lens. It features a dual-tone LED Flash, f/2.0 aperture, 1.25um pixel size, Sony IMX386 sensors, and phase detection auto-focus (PDAF). On the front side, there’s a 16-megapixel snapper with f/2.0 aperture.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 ac (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, and USB Type-C. It’s Spring Festival already in China and tech giant Meizu apparently ended the year on a high note. The company has disclosed that its flagship Meizu Pro 7 has won the popular German iF Product Design award for its innovative design. What a marvellous way to usher in the Chinese New year!

The iF Product Design Award was introduced in 1954 and is annually conferred by the iF International Forum Design. The award, which spans multiple disciplines, has more than 5,500 entries from around 59 nations every year. The Pro 7 stood out among the pack of over 6,400 entries submitted by contestants from 54 countries around the world to claim the award in the smartphone design category. 

The award really doesn’t come as a surprise because the Pro 7 is known for its spectacular design style which looks absolutely different from Meizu’s past works. The Meizu Pro 7 design was done by Frog design, a multinational design company with its roots being Germany. The design saw the flagship Pro 7 packing a dual-screen setup both at the front and rear aspects. The main display is a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED screen with a FullHD resolution of 1920 x 1080pixels while the Pro 7 Plus packs a 5.7-inch display. The device also comes with a secondary screen at the back which is a 1.9-inch AMOLED display located on the left side of the rear panel and which displays some notifications as well as run a few apps. The Meizu Pro 7 features a MediaTek Helio X30 chip as well as Helio P25 on some models.

Another superb feature is the rear dual camera setup which the device packs and it is fused into the secondary display in a unique manner. In addition, the device runs on the Flyme 6 OS based on Android 7.0 Nougat and is fueled by a 3000mAh battery with mCharge 3.0. The Pro 7 is competitively priced, as it starts at 2880 Yuan (∼$426) for the base variant powered by Helio P25 and 3380 Yuan (∼$500) for the Helio  X30 version. These prices have obviously seen some reduction since its first launch. The Pro 7’s special New Year edition which was unveiled in January came in at just 1,999 Yuan (~$312).

Meizu has officially announced that the flagship Pro 7 New Year Special Edition will be on sale on January 24 well ahead of the Chinese Spring Festival or New Year coming up on February 16. The Meizu Pro 7 Spring Festival special edition is actually the Titan Red variant but it comes with a gift bag containing a couple of stuff and is priced at 1,999 Yuan. Despite the free gift attached to the purchase, the Pro 7 still retains the 1,999 Yuan (~$312) price which it presently sells for in China.

The new edition features a design consistent with the regular model, including a secondary display at the back. The Spring edition is only available in 4GB RAM + 64GB storage and also contains a New Year gift bag with customized Meizu couplets, stickers and a  New Year greeting card.

Earlier, we reported that Meizu is gearing up to launch Meizu Pro 7 phone in the Indian market. Now it seems that the company is finally ready to bring it to the Indian shores.

According to the report, Meizu Pro 7 will be launched in India later this month. However, there is no exact timeline available for the launch. The report further suggests that the device will be priced under Rs. 30,000 (approximately $473) in India.

In November last year, the company teased the launch of a “Pro” smartphone, without revealing the phone’s name. The image posted by the company on the social media website stated, “it’s time for you to become a Pro! Stay Tuned! #BeAPro.”

The Meizu Pro 7 was originally launched in China in June last year, along with Meizu Pro 7 Plus. However, the Pro 7 Plus will not be launched this year, according to the report. The Pro 7 features a unique secondary AMOLED display at the back which shows time, notifications, weather, and also serves as a selfie screen for taking portraits from the rear camera.

The device features a 5.2-inch Full HD Super AMOLED primary display with 1920 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. There is also a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED secondary display with screen resolution of 240 × 536 pixels and 307ppi pixel density.

Under the hood, the Meizu Pro 7 is powered by 2.5GHz MediaTek Helio P25 octa-core processor along with Mali-T880 GPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB internal storage. The other variant of the phone comes powered by 2.6GHz MediaTek Helio X30 deca-core 10nm processor with PowerVR 7XTP-MP4 GPU, 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage.

There is a dual camera setup at the back, featuring two 12-megapixel sensors with one being a monochrome lens and other being RGB lens, along with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus, and LED flash support. On the front, there’s a 16-megapixel camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

The fingerprint sensor is embedded in the phone’s home button and the device comes with USB Type-C port. Earlier this year, in July, Meizu had launched its flagship smartphones — Meizu Pro 7 and its bigger sibling, Pro 7 Plus. The smartphones, which were starting at a price of 2,880 Yuan and 3,580 Yuan, respectively, have now received a massive price cut of 600 Yuan in China.

Recently, the pricing of the devices was reduced to 2,499 Yuan and 3,299 Yuan. Now, after this latest price cut, the pricing for the Meizu Pro 7 series will start at just 1,999 Yuan. The new pricing will go live on 12th December. It seems that with this price cut, the company is looking to increase the competition in the premium smartphone sector.

To remind you of the specifications, the Meizu Pro 7 features a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display and also packs a secondary Super AMOLED display. There are two models of the Pro 7 — one has 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC 5.1 storage and is powered by the Helio P25, while the other has 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage and packs Helio X30 SoC.

On the other hand, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus comes with  5.7-inch Super Super AMOLED display along with a secondary screen. This one is also available in two configurations — 6GB of RAM with either 64GB or 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. Both versions are powered by the Helio X30 processor.

Both the smartphones come with dual camera configuration at the back and the company has adopted the monochrome + RGB setup for the camera sensors. There are two 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensors with f/2.0 aperture. On the front, there is a 16-megapixel front-facing camera for taking selfies.

The phones are running on Flyme OS 6, which is based on Android Nougat operating system.  The Pro 7 is fueled by a 3,000mAh battery with mCharge 3.0 while the Pro7 Plus is powered by a 3,500mAh battery with mCharge 4.0. According to the company, mCharge 4.0 charges the phone at 5V 5A (25W), taking it from 0 percent to 67 percent in just 30 minutes.

Meizu, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, has teased a new smartphone launch in the Indian market. The company has tweeted a promo image but has not yet revealed the launch date.

The promo image posted by the company contains the number 6, and also resembles the Meizu M6 Note’s dual camera setup. Its noteworthy that the company has not specifically mentioned that the phone is getting launched. However, the company has used the hashtag #StayTrue on the image, which was used for the initial launch of the smartphone in China.

The company has also posted another image which features a quad LED flash, confirming that the device is indeed Meizu M6 Note.

The Meizu M6 Note smartphone has a beautiful metal unibody, and is expected to be available in Blue, Champagne Gold, and Obsidian Black colours. The smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a 2.5D curved glass on top.

It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor along with Adreno 506 GPU. The device is available in three variants — 3GB RAM with 16GB internal storage, 3GB RAM with 32GB onboard storage and 4GB RAM with 64GB of internal storage. All these variants of Meizu M6 Note comes with microSD card support for expanding the storage capacity.

On the optics front, there is a 12MP Sony IMX362 rear camera, which has a ƒ/1.9 ultra-wide aperture, and a 1.4μm pixel CMOS image sensor. It also has a 5MP Samsung 2L7 secondary camera sensor at the back. The phone also features a 16MP front camera with a ƒ/2.0 wide aperture.

The smartphone runs on Flyme OS 6.0, which is based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system. It comes powered by a 4,000mAh battery that supports mCharge 18W fast charging and promises up to 10 hours of gaming. It also sports fingerprint scanner on the front, embedded in the phone’s home button.

Starting off as a small-time MP3 manufacturer, Zhuhai based Meizu, has come a long way after shifting its focus into the booming smartphone industry in 2008. From its first ever smartphone, the Meizu M8 to the latest Meizu Pro 7, the company has shown tremendous promise with its devices. In fact, the new Pro 7 is one of a kind smartphone featuring a small second screen at the back to enhance user experience. Even the company’s mBack button is often praised for its innovative gestures.

Thanks to these features, Meizu has always been able to go head to head with the big players in the market including its closest rival, Xiaomi. In fact, up until early 2016, if a customer was looking to buy a value for money mid-ranger in China, it often would come down to a Xiaomi or Meizu smartphone. However, with a variety of options from brands like Honor, OPPO, and Vivo flooding the streets, things aren’t the same as before. These smartphones may not be as cheap as the ones from the online focused Xiaomi and Meizu, but their marketing and promotions have given them an edge over sheer specifications.

OPPO and Vivo have changed the way we look at how companies market their phones. Their strategy to take full advantage of offline channels in China has clearly made an impact on the remaining brands, with companies like Xiaomi, who initially focused only on online channels, have now aggressively shifted its focus onto offline stores as well.

Xiaomi’s shift in strategy seems to be bearing fruit, with its sales going up in the recent quarter. The company has already roped in a few celebrities to promote its products and significant efforts are being made to expand the total number of Mi stores in China as well as abroad. In fact, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has revealed that the company plans to launch as much as 1000 Mi Stores by 2020. This clearly shows Xiaomi has realized the importance of brick and mortar stores.

But what about Meizu? Once considered as a direct rival to Xiaomi, the gap between these two companies seems to have increased in recent times. In terms of YoY sales, Meizu is still doing well. After having shipped 20 million smartphones in 2015, the company managed to beat this figure by an additional 2 million in 2016. That’s a healthy growth in a market that’s slowed down in the past couple of years. However, it’s not as good as it could have been, as Meizu was expected to ship over 25 million smartphones last year.

Things are looking slow for Meizu in 2017, with limited smartphone launches and issues such as internal layoffs. There have been just six smartphone launches this year, including the two new Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus models. In comparison, the company had released 15 models back in 2016. We aren’t seeing many promotions or celebrity endorsements for the company either. So, overall, it has been a quiet year for the company so far.

What Happened to Meizu in the Past Few Months?

Meizu went on a hiring spree in 2016, increasing its total employee count to nearly 4400, from just 3000 before. The company expected high growth to continue through 2016, but as the sales figures indicate, it wasn’t as good as expected. With sales being sluggish, it became necessary to make the company more efficient, which is why layoffs came into the picture.
To be fair, it wasn’t just the recent slowdown that forced the company to layoff over 10% of its staff this year. Meizu’s CEO Bai Yongxiang had revealed early last year his plan to adopt Jack Welch’s 20-70-10 vitality curve system, wherein the company would lay off the bottom 10% of the underperforming employees. Last year, it laid off around 5% of its workforce but this year the figure has nearly doubled, thanks to the less than impressive sales.

The market hasn’t been kind to Meizu either. In 2016, IDC (International Data Corporation) reported that Chinese consumers now preferred to upgrade their smartphones with better specs.As a result, consumers would go on to prefer flagships from OPPO and Huawei (OPPO R9S and Huawei P9 respectively), instead of Meizu, as they are now willing to spend more. This shift in preference has adversely affected companies like Meizu whose focus has been on cheap mid-range devices.

Meizu’s near exclusive partnership with MediaTek could be another reason why the company has not been able to make a mark in the premium smartphone category. Apart from a couple of models like the Meizu Pro 5 which featured Exynos chipsets, all other company models relied on MTK processors. While the cheaper MTK processors gave Meizu cost advantage, the chipmaker’s less than stellar reputation in the premium category did it more harm than good. The Helio X20 and X25 chipsets from MediaTek in 2016 were way less powerful than rivals such as Snapdragon 820/821 and Exynos 8890. Given that Meizu’s most powerful Pro 6 models featured this MTK Helio X25 chipset, the phone couldn’t compete with the likes of Xiaomi Mi 5 / Mi 5S featuring more powerful Snapdragon 820 / 821 chipsets.

The situation this year hasn’t changed much for MediaTek, with the company reportedly struggling with the new Helio X30’s mass production because of its advanced 10nm manufacturing node. On the other hand, Qualcomm’s flagship chipset this year, the Snapdragon 835 (also built on the 10nm node), has already found its place in premium smartphones since April 2017. So, you can see how Meizu’s reliance on MTK’s Helio X30 chipset for its new Pro 7 flagship couldn’t have helped the company in an early launch.

Also, Meizu’s pricing strategy hasn’t been on point from time to time. Take the Meizu M5 Note for example. The phone was launched at the end of 2016, powered by the Helio P10 processor, starting at 899 Yuan ($135). Interestingly, this price was quietly increased on the official Meizu store a month later, in January 2017, to 999 Yuan ($150). Now consider this, at around the same price, you get the Helio X20 (flagship grade) powered Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. Further, there’s a Snapdragon variant of the Redmi Note 4 as well (which by the way is a best seller in India) at a similar price tag. Because of the better chipset inside the Xiaomi models, they seem to offer better value than the M5 Note, driving consumers to purchase the Note 4. As I mentioned above, Meizu has always been an online focused company. But that has done it more harm than good in the past few months. As the demand for affordable phones has saturated in the Tier 1 cities, Tier 2-4 cities will now drive growth for smartphone companies. The customers in these cities are less tech savvy and rely more on offline channels to purchase a smartphone. This is exactly why companies like OPPO and Vivo, who have focused on offline sales channels in the lower tier cities, have managed to grow so quickly.

In order to understand the importance of offline sales channels in China, you have to know the difference between online and offline customers first. Online customers are usually quite tech savvy, hunting for the best deals on the internet. This forces companies like Xiaomi and Meizu to keep the price aggressive with super low margins. On the other hand, offline customers are more brand conscious than price conscious. This is where the huge marketing budget of companies like OPPO and Vivo come into play. Thanks to the aggressive celebrity endorsements of their products, customers in these Tier 2-4 cities often end up buying smartphones seen with their favorite celebrities.

Companies like Xiaomi, who initially preferred to stay away from such promotions, have also started partnering up with top celebrities to market their smartphones. However, as of yet, Meizu seems to lay relatively quiet in this department, which hasn’t helped in its sales.

Of course, with so much marketing, these brands have to pass on the cost to the customers. And you can clearly see this increased cost transferred in the pricing of offline oriented smartphone brands. For example, the Xiaomi Mi 6 with dual cameras, Snapdragon 835 and 6GB RAM is priced at $2499 (~$374). On the other hand, the OPPO R11 which comes with a slower Snapdragon 660 and 4GB RAM starts at a higher 2999 Yuan (~$450). With these lower specs, the OPPO R11 shouldn’t be doing too well right? But there are already reports that OPPO has sold more than 2 million units within the first two months of launch.

To be honest, Meizu might not be in the best financial position to increase its marketing budget immediately. Last year, lawsuits with Qualcomm kept it busy and even the settlement deal with the chipmaker in December 2016 will have cost the company significantly.

So, for now, the company seems to be in the rebuilding/restructuring phase, releasing a limited number of smartphones (Meizu M5S, Meizu E2, M5C, Meizu A5, Pro 7, Pro 7 Plus) in the first half of 2017.

What can we expect from Meizu in the second half of 2017?

Not much actually. The Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus with its secondary screens were probably the most exciting products from Meizu this year. According to an earlier leaked roadmap, there are just a handful of smartphones (4 more) expected later in 2017, including Meizu MX7, Meizu M6 Note (launching on August 23) and another Meizu model with a Snapdragon 6XX series chipset.

Although at present things may not look super positive for Meizu, the company seems to be making the right moves in 2017. It’s cutting down costs, focusing on a small number of smartphones in a year. It has already split the company into three focused brands: Meizu will focus on high-end smartphones, Blue Charm brand (M Series) will take care of the affordable smartphone segment and Flyme brand will focus on the development of the software aspect of smartphones. There has been a shuffle in the leadership as well, with founder Jack Wong overseeing company operations, Bai Yongxiang becoming the president of the main Meizu brand, Li Nan taking over as the President of the Blue Charm brand (M-Series) and Yang Yan becoming the president of Flyme.

Meizu’s offline marketing strategy is also getting some traction. The recent Pro 7 launch via offline stores (alongside online channels) were quite successful. Then there are roadshows being conducted across China to promote its brand new flagship. These efforts will help the company increase brand exposure in lower tier cities.

The settlement with Qualcomm should also help the company upgrade its reputation as a premium smartphone maker. High-end Snapdragon 8XX series flagships from Meizu aren’t expected anytime soon, but a Snapdragon 6XX mid-ranger, said to release before the end of this year, should be a good start to the relationship. By next year, we could finally see a top-end Qualcomm chip inside Meizu’s flagship, potentially making it a formidable rival to the big players in the market.

The company is also making significant efforts to improve its Flyme operating system. In the past few months, Meizu has managed to port its Flyme UI to a number of third party smartphones like OnePlus 3T, ZUK Edge, Moto X Style and Moto X Force. This goes in line with the company’s strategy of establishing Meizu (Flyme) as a mobile internet company.

As you can see, Meizu’s recent decisions have been focused on restructuring the company’s strategies. Layoffs, business splits, management shuffles, new partnerships and focus on software are all part of the company’s rebuilding strategy. Therefore, it’s okay if Meizu has a lackluster 2017 as next year is probably going to be the comeback year for the company.

It’s no longer news that Meizu finally took the wraps off the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus in a colourful ceremony last week. Just when we thought all about the two flagships have been unravelled, a new twist has appeared in the mix from benchmark platform Geekbench. Someone recently uploaded a benchmark result alleged to be that of the Meizu Pro 7 and you know what? The Pro 7 in question has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Systems-on-Chip (SoC) onboard.

The Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus were launched as the first models powered by MediaTek’s latest and first 10nm flagship Helio X30 chip, with some models packing an equally new Helio P25 processor. The Pro 7 Plus comes entirely with an Helio X30 processor while the Meizu Pro 7 had either an Helio X30 or Helio P25 chip onboard. But the Geekbench model has an SD 835 chip on board as well as 6GB of RAM. The model is listed with a single-core score of 1969 and a multi-core score of 6536 points which is almost similar to that of other Snapdragon 835 smartphones.

This piece of information will be of interest to the section of Meizu fans who seek for a Qualcomm-powered Meizu phone especially as that Qualcomm powered phone is likely turning out to be the “Lord of the Manor”, the company’s best model yet. Currently, both the smartphones are up for registrations. The PRO 7 duo have met with over 10,000 registrations in less than day which indicates how popular these phones are.

Only customers who register for the Meizu PRO 7 or PRO 7 Plus can participate in the first flash sale that will start from Aug. 5 at 10:00. The Meizu PRO 7 and PRO 7 Plus is expected to arrive in 16 other countries where Meizu is officially selling its smartphones. Hence, the PRO 7 duo are expected to nations like Brunel, Cambodia, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Ukraine, and Vietnam. The U.S. and the U.K are not on the list which means Meizu fans in these regions can avail the PRO 7 and PRO 7 Plus through re-sellers.

The Meizu PRO 7 has a 5.2-inch FHD S-AMOLED screen and is houses a 3,000 mAh battery whereas the larger PRO 7 Plus has a 5.7-inch QHD S-AMOLED display. Both are equipped with a large-sized battery of 3,500mAh capacity. We are all eager to see how the Helio X30 performs since its debut in the Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus. The first of the benchmark results have been released online by a Weibo user.

The 4GB RAM Helio X30 Pro 7 was benchmarked on AnTuTu and the results are interesting. The device scored 141982 points on the app, putting it just behind the Snapdragon 821-powered Mi Note 2 and Mi MIX; and the Kirin 960 powered Huawei Mate 9.

If  you are looking for the most powerful device out there, then the Meizu Pro 7 isn’t the device you should get but it will be unfair to undermine the work Mediatek has put into this new chip.

If you own a Snapdragon 821 powered-phone or one powered by the Kirin 960, then you will know it is more than sufficient to run any app you throw at it. Seeing Mediatek’s new chip rank among these two SoCs is no small feat.

The Helio X30 is their first truly high-end chip and hopefully subsequent ones will be better. But will they be able to catch up to Qualcomm and Samsung, not likely. Next year, Qualcomm is moving to 7nm chips and Samsung will be jumping to 8nm first before the move to 7nm in H2 2018. If Mediatek is still behind these two with its 10nm chip, it won’t catch up with them with their next generation chip unless a miracle happens.

The Helio X30 will be nice as a chip for high-end mid range phones but not for flagship devices. We expect it to show up in more devices before the year runs out.

Built on the 10nm architecture, the Helio X30 has 10-cores. It brings a performance increase of 240% and a decrease in power consumption by 60% compared to last generation chips. It also has an improved graphics performance thanks to its PowerVR GPU.

Today has been an exciting one so far. Xiaomi unveiled its new phone, the Mi 5X; the latest version of its custom OS, MIUI 9; and its smart speaker, the Mi AI Speaker. A few hours later, it is Meizu’s turn and they have launched their latest flagship phones, the Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus.

The biggest feature of the new phones are the secondary displays. Measuring 1.9-inches on both phones and positioned on the rear, it’s a whole new take on dual display technology.

Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus Design

Meizu has partnered with American design company, Frog Design, and they are calling the result of their partnership an Omni-Dimensional Design. Unlike other manufacturers that have adopted glass as their material of choice, Meizu has settled for metal with a brush finish at the back.

Meizu has never been one to shy away from bright colors and the Pro 7 is an example. It comes in bright red alongside the usual black and gold.

Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus Cameras

This is Meizu’s first dual camera phone and just like Motorola did with the Moto Z2 Force announced yesterday, the Pro 7 (and 7 Plus) have adopted the monochrome + RGB configuration. The sensors are 12MP Sony IMX386 with an f/2.0 aperture size. The result of this configuration is better night shots.

Up front sits a 16MP sensor for selfies though you can also use the rear cameras for selfies since there is a display at the back. Just swipe down and you enter the camera mode.

Meizu Pro 7 and Pro7 Plus Specs

The Pro 7 has a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display while the Pro 7 Plus is 5.7-inches. The secondary display is Super AMOLED too. Powering the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus is Mediatek’s Helio X2 and Helio X30 processors.

There are two models of the Pro 7: one has 4GB of RAM and 64GB eMMC 5.1 storage and is powered by the Helio P25, while the other has 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage and a Helio X30 SoC.

The Pro 7 Plus gets 6GB of RAM with either 64GB or 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage and both versions are powered by the Helio X30.

Meizu says the Pro 7 is good for gaming and you do not have to worry about overheating. Tests show that the temperature stays at 34.6°C when playing Asphalt 8 and 40.4°C while playing NBA 2K17.

The differences don’t end there. The smaller Pro 7 has a 3000mAh battery with mCharge 3.0 and the Pro7 Plus gets a 3500mAh battery with mCharge 4.0. mCharge 4.0 charges your phone at 5V 5A (25W), taking it from 0 to 67% in just 30 minutes. It seems we might have a new fast charging champion.

There is a dedicated audio chip in each phone to make sure that your audio is crystal clear. Both phones run Flyme 6 based on Android 7.0 out of the box.

The Pro 7 will be available in black, red, and gold and will cost ¥2880 (∼$426) for the base variant and ¥3380 (∼$500) for the 128GB/Helio  X30 version.

Meizu is expected to officially unveil the Pro 7 on the evening of July 26 which is barely two days away so, it is just right that they keep the internet buzzing with fresh photos of the flagship. That is, perhaps, the intention of Jeffery Yang who shared a clean photo of the Pro 7 on Weibo today.

The photo is that of the Grey coloured variant which was first leaked last week but this time around it shows the back of the device but omitted the part containing the rear cameras. The major thing that we can grab from the photo is the presence of a brush metal body and a grey coloured variant. Also, the rear secondary display seems to be curved at the outer edge just like the rest of the body. The U-shaped antenna band design also looks like what is hidden at the bottom edge and we believe the upper edge will also look similar. It has a similar grey colour with the body, something that may be peculiar to this colour variant.

Apart from the grey variant, the Meizu Pro 7 is expected to come in Black, Gold and Red colour variants. As for the specs, the Pro 7 has been confirmed by MeidaTek to be the first smartphone to launch with MediaTek’s Deca-core Helio X30 chip. It is expeccted to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display as well as dual 12MP Sony IMX386+ 12MP Sony IMX286 sensors at the rear with a ring flash having 10 LEDs. The camera will likely be one of the main selling points of the device based on the sample shots we have seen. But we can only make a decent judgement of the device after it has been launched and subjected to Linus’ critical review here on Gizmochina. Other specs are still not certain, that also we’ll know when it is launched.

The Meizu Pro 7 is expected to drop on July 26 which is just days away so, it is understandable how the tech industry has been kept buzzing with news surrounding the Pro 7 and its design. The San Francisco-based company yesterday released an official tweet where it stated that it looked forward to an exciting announcement by Meizu on July 26. The tweet also provided a sneak peek of the Pro 7 design with a GIF image highlighting the Pro 7’s design which it termed as omni-dimensional, a new design language.

It has officially been revealed that the Meizu Pro 7 will be launched on July 26. What is left is for the device to appear on benchmark platforms for us to see the capabilities of the Helio X30 chip. Apart from that, some may say we have seen it all but then, we are yet to see all the juice the Pro 7 will offer. A new leaked photos have revealed the presence of a grey coloured variant showing the rear body may likely have a brushed metal texture.

From the look of things, the brushed metal body will be across the board as the TENAA listed photos of the Pro 7 also shows brushed metal body on the gold coloured variant of the device. In addition, the black variant has also been spotted with the same rear design. The brushed metal body gives the sleek design a touch of class making it more attractive. 

The smooth outlook of the brushed metal body adds to the sleek look of the Pro 7’s secondary screen which is nestled at the upper left corner at the back. Even the Meizu logo at the bottom of the device written in a vertical direction sort of adds to the beauty of the device.

The PRO 7 duo have already received certification from TENAA, a regulatory body from China.  Now, one of the two smartphones have appeared in a leaked video. The short video clip showcases the USP of the phone – the secondary screen that is fitted on the backside. It cannot be identified whether the video that has surfaced belongs to the Meizu PRO 7 or PRO 7 Plus.

As it can be seen in the video (available in the source), the secondary screen of the PRO 7 is a color display and is responsive to touch. A double tap on the screen activates the 2-inch screen. It appears that users will be able to customize the small screen with widgets. The various widgets can be accessed by swiping action.

One of the widgets shows the weather and there is another one showing the fitness data. Apart from these information, the secondary screen can display the notifications. One of the previous rumors have shown that it can actually display a miniature front screen as well.

One of the newly leaked images reveal that the Meizu PRO 7 would be coming in color choices such as red, black and gold. Since it is a flagship chipset and the PRO 7 will be the first smartphone to use it, the PRO 7 Plus smartphone is also expected to be driven by the same chipset.

The Meizu PRO 7 will be coming with a 5.2-inch display that will be producing full HD resolution. The PRO 7 Plus would be coming with a 5.7-inch display that is speculated to produce QHD resolution. Photos taken with the upcoming Meizu Pro 7 have been released by Meizu’s Senior Vice President, Jeffrey Yang, mainly showing off the potential of the Meizu Pro 7’s monochromic camera capabilities.

This recent post has been Meizu’s effort to share the limelight of the Pro 7’s secondary display and raise the hype of the device’s camera also.

The post consists of four photo sample teasers, three of which are taken in monochrome and the other is in color. According to the source, this suggests that the Meizu Pro 7 will have a dual camera setup with an RGB-color sensor paired with a monochrome sensor to provide high-contrast results.

The images all show scenarios that provide difficult lighting conditions with very promising results.

The disappointing factor is no EXIF info is provided with the images thus there is no further detailing of the cameras, all we do know is the pictures have been taken with a 12-megapixel camera, according to the source.

In relation to photography, we also know that the secondary display will function as a control to take selfies with the main camera.

More details would be expected to be unveiled closer to the official announcement on July 26.

Meizu’s July 26 event in China is for the Pro 7 flagship but alongside its launch, the company is also expected to release its first high-end headphones called the Meizu Flow. The Flow is expected to be the company’s most powerful headphones till date and naturally, with high-end hardware inside, you can expect the price to be quite high as well.

But how costly will be the Meizu Flow?

According to a leaked poster seen in China, the Meizu Pro 7 + Meizu Flow bundle will set you back as much as 6999 Yuan ($1035). If the poster is accurate, this basically means that the Flow headphones will be nearly as costly as the Pro 7 flagship! At such a price, the headphones need to be really, really good to find buyers.

One positive thing going for the Meizu Flow headphones is the recent comment from a senior hardware columnist and headphone enthusiast from China. Lin seems to have got the chance to try out the Flow headphones and he said that the quality is good. He adds that the headphones comes with a custom iron unit and that the price is not going to be cheap.

A recent leak revealed the design of the Meizu Pro 7 and it has a very striking resemblance to the high-end AKG K3003 headphones. Now, note that the K3003 is a premium headset, officially retailing for as much as $1000, although on sites like Amazon you can get it for a lot cheaper. Even if the design of the Flow headphones resembles the K3003, it remains to be seen whether Meizu can come close to its sound quality. If you remember, Meizu started out as an MP3 Play manufacturer, so it has years of experience in the audio field.

Meizu has officially confirmed that its next flagship smartphone, the Meizu Pro 7, will meet us on July 26 at the big event at the Opera House in China. We haven’t seen a high-end product from the company so far in 2017, which makes the Pro 7 an important model.

Thanks to the numerous leaks that have been going around the internet, we already know what’s new on the Meizu Pro 7 — a unique secondary display at the back. But till now, it wasn’t official. This seems to have changed now, as Meizu has released a few teasers for the Pro 7 and each of them seem to highlight the secondary window display on the upcoming flagship, essentially confirming it.

Further, teasers revealed by another official Weibo account of Meizu seems to be hinting at dual cameras on the phone. This means that we know for sure that the Meizu Pro 7 will have a secondary display at the back along with a dual camera setup.

According to previous leaks, the Pro 7’s secondary display will be a 2-inch E-ink screen and will support different modes such as black and white, music mode etc. The screen can reportedly be used even after shutting down the phone. It is further said that users can use the screen for photo previews, playing games etc.

The usability of the additional screen at the back will decide the fate of the Pro 7. Trying out a unique design is never easy and more often than not, companies pay a heavy price for deviating from the traditional design. We know how LG G5 differentiated itself with a modular design but failed to attract the attention of customers due to the lack of significant practical benefits of the new design. But LG V20‘s secondary screen looked promising and I hope Meizu has enough tricks planned for its secondary screen to make it attractive to customers.

We also have a basic idea about the internal specifications of the Pro 7. The phone is said to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p primary display up front with Helio X30 inside (finally!), 6GB / 8GB RAM options, 128GB storage, 12MP Sony IMX386 + IMX 286 dual camera setup at the back and a 16MP front camera. The price is expected to be 2799 Yuan ($414) and 3299 Yuan ($488) for the two variants of the phone. Note that these specs and pricing details are yet to be confirmed.

That notwithstanding, the rumour may not have any credibility in it as a Meizu staff has bluntly denied the existence of such configuration on the Pro 7 or Pro 7 Plus. The Meizu staff has taken down the post, by the way, so we couldn’t get a translated screenshot for you but he categorically stated that there is no Exynos 8895 on the Pro 7. The staff hinted that the Pro 7 project had commenced even before the Exynos 8895 chip or the Samsung Galaxy S8 was introduced and the R&D stage could even pre-date that of the Galaxy S8.

It is likely the rumour originated from the internet, particularly from Weibo as you can see from the screenshot above and not from Meizu. Perhaps, the rumours would sound less interesting if the Helio X30 chip has appeared on several benchmarks so we could know how capable it is as a flagship chip. But then, Meizu has released official posters for the launch of the Pro 7 on July 26. We expect some benchmark data to leak before then. Even if it doesn’t, we’ll serve you a detailed review of the device here on Gizmochina as soon as we get our hands on it after the launch.

In the past month, plenty of information on the Meizu PRO 7 and PRO 7 Plus smartphones have surfaced. Recently, the senior vice-president of Meizu, Jeffery Yuan had updated his Weibo profile with an image of PRO 7. This indicated that the Meizu PRO 7 may launch on the rumored date of July 26. Finally, the Chinese has confirmed on the unveil event that will be happening on the same date.

The Meizu PRO 7 is now confirmed to debut on July 26 through a launch event that will be held at the headquarters of the company in Zhuhai, China. The event will begin at 7:30 PM local time. Here is the Weibo post from the company that declares the official launch of Meizu PRO 7:

The word “window” in the above Weibo post probably refers to the secondary screen that is present on the rear side of the Meizu PRO 7 duo. This secondary screen can be used for seeing notifications. It can also function as a viewfinder for camera. It can be also used for playing games. Meizu.  The 2-inch screen will also work in black and white mode and it will be usable even when the phone is turned off.

Yesterday, some images of the leaked invitations of a box with a dummy unit of the Meizu PRO 7 had surfaced. One of the images of the dummy unit of the PRO 7 contains a secondary screen with the information on the launch date and venue mentioned on it.

The Meizu PRO 7 and PRO 7 Plus are speculated to respectively feature 5.2-inch FHD and 5.7-inch QHD screens that will probably support Quad HD resolution. Previous rumors had hinted that the Exynos 8895 chipset would be powering the smartphone, but fresh details suggest that all the variants of the Meizu PRO & and PRO 7 Plus will be driven by the MediaTek Helio X30 chipset that includes a ten-core processor. Both the smartphones will be equipped with a 12-megapixel dual rear camera setup. It is speculated to include Sony IMX386 and IMX286 sensors.

Meizu PRO 7 is rumored to debut on July 26.  It is speculated to launch alongside the Meizu PRO 7 Plus. The rumor mill has revealed plenty of leaked images of the Meizu PRO 7 in the past weeks. Speculations claim that the Meizu PRO 7 and 7 Plus would be debuting at Zhuhai, China on July 26 at 19:30 PM local time. Jeffery Yang, the senior vice-president of Meizu has change the display image of his Weibo profile to PRO 7.

Yang has also posted some new images on his Weibo. The PRO 7 duo are equipped dual rear cameras. It is not clear whether the images revealed by Yang are snapped using the PRO 7. Some of the images posted by him carries image of a window which could be hinting to the USP of the PRO 7 i.e. its secondary screen.

The backside of the Meizu PRO 7 and PRO 7 Plus feature a secondary screen below the dual rear cameras. The secondary screen is 2-inch in size. The secondary screen supports multiple functions such as it can work as a view finder for the dual cameras, for displaying notifications, playing games, and it can even work when the smartphone is turned off.

The Meizu PRO 7 will be a standard variant that is expected to come with a 5.2-inch screen that supports full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. It will be driven by MediaTek Helio X30 chipset that features a deca-core processor. It would be coming in two RAM variants of 6 GB and 8 GB.

The dual cameras module sitting on the backside of the Meizu PRO 7 is equipped with Sony IMX386 + IMX286 12-megapixel sensors. The front-facing camera of the PRO 7 will be of 16-memgapixel. The two variants of the Meizu PRO 7 is rumored to be available with a pricing of 2,799 Yuan (~$413) and 3,299 Yuan (~$486)

The Meizu PRO 7 Plus would be coming with high-end specs compared to the PRO 7. It would be featuring a 5.7-inch QHD display and it would be powered by Samsung Exynos 8895 chipset. It is expected to arrive in three variants such as 4 GB RAM + 64 GB priced at $3299 (~$486), 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage priced at 3,599 Yuan (~$530) and 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage costing 3,799 Yuan (~$560).

We have seen a lot of leaked renders of the Meizu Pro 7 so far but that of the Pro 7 Plus has been quite elusive. We may have seen the Pro 7 Plus’ real photo without realising it. Recall that a recent photo of the Pro 7 surfaced online recently revealing the secondary display may support touch input. Turns out one of the two phones in the photo is actually that of the Pro 7 Plus. 

The leaked photo appeared in black and gold colors. On closer scrutiny, it would be noticed that the Black variant is a little bigger in size than the gold variant. That is because the black variant is the Meizu Pro 7 Plus. If you didn’t pick that up at first, don’t get furious because you are not alone. Moreso, the Pro7 and Pro 7 Plus both feature exactly the same design, the only difference would be the internal hardware they pack. The Pro 7 Plus is rumoured to feature an Exynos 8895 chipset while the Pro 7 will utilise MediaTek’s flagship Helio X30 chip.

Leaks concerning the Meizu Pro 7 has been quite consistent these days considering that the flagship phone is tipped as launching later this month. The rear display seems to be the biggest highlight of the Pro 7 but some may say it is the Helio X30 chip it is expected to feature.  Well, looks like the Pro 7 will not be having an Helio X30 chip only as new detail has emerged that the Meizu Pro 7 Plus will feature a Samsung Exynos 8895 chip.

Meizu has always been known to use Exynos chips on its smartphones, the last to feature that was the Meizu Pro 6 Plus which uses an Exynos 8890 chip but that was like a year after Samsung released the flagship chip. But in this case, the Pro 7 Plus is said to feature the Exynos 8895 a couple of months after it was released. The information is credited to have been revealed by a Meizu store employee. The details include that there are two versions of the Pro 7, one with a secondary display and another version without a secondary display, both powered by Helio X30. The Meizu Pro 7 Plus, on the other hand, will have a secondary display and will be powered by the latest Exynos 8895 as stated earlier.

MediaTek recently confirmed the Pro 7 will be the first smartphone to pack its deca-core flagship chip and also that the Helio X30 is manufactured specifically for extreme gamers.

Talking about the secondary display, the Pro 7’s display isn’t new to us but all along it is thought to be an e-ink display that would only show notifications and maybe time and date. But recently, leaked photos of the Pro 7 shows that it would like have more features than we were thinking. Once again, it looks like the rear display isn’t likely going to be an e-ink display as a new leaked photo of the Meizu Pro 7 rear screen has appeared online from China’s Weibo. The leaked Pro 7’s rear display again shows the screen can display colors which means it would likely be an LCD panel.

In addition, the display could be seen to be running a game which looks like the legendary Pac-Man. This points at the strong possibility of the rear display coming with touch input support since the game can only be controlled using the screen. This also lend credence to earlier leak pointing at the presence of Meizu’s Flyme interface on the device. Another thing is that the Pro 7 will likely be available in black and gold, the two colors the leaked model appeared in. It is possible that there will be more than  just two color variants, though.

Once again, we get to see some more features of Meizu‘s upcoming Pro 7 flagship courtesy of a couple of leaked photo of a working unit. The Meizu Pro 7, as we already know, will feature two displays, a large 5.2-inch display at the front while there will be a 2-inch display at the rear. 

The idea of a smartphone packing two displays on both sides is innovative enough to generate some interest in the upcoming flagship. The secondary display was initially thought to be an e-ink display which would display missed calls/sms notifications, time/ date and a couple of other icons. But now, it looks like the Pro 7’s display has much more functions than those. The leaked photos show that the back screen will have Meizu’ Flyme interface with similar icons on the main display’s home screen.

The MeizuPro 7 is turning out to be more interesting than we thought. Apart from the dual screens, the Pro 7 will be the first Meizu smartphone to pack a dual camera setup at the rear. The photo also shows the main camera can be used to take selfie shots while it is being previewed on the secondary display. In essence, the rear screen looks like a miniaturised version of the front screen but sure, there can’t be exactly the same functionalities on both displays. The secondary display looks good for one handed control but that will only be comfortable with the left hand.

In addition to these features, MediaTek has already confirmed that the Pro 7 will be the first Helio X30-powered smartphone. As per the configuration, the Pro 7 will feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display and would have a 4GB + 64GB memory version and another with 6GB RAM + 128GB storage.   The Pro 7 is also expected to start at 2799 Yuan (~$410) and is expected to be launched at the end of this month.

We couldn’t lay our hands on the video clip but the screenshots that were leaked shows a man holding the Pro 7. Even though the images are a bit grainy, we can still make out that this is the Pro 7 design we have been seeing so often.

The camera will likely be one of the main selling points of the device if the photo leaked by Meizu VP Jeffery Yang was actually shot using the Pro 7’s camera. The front camera is said to have a 16MP sensor.  The display is expected to be a 5.2-incher while the secondary screen is said to be 2 inches wide. The Pro 7 is also expected to start at 2799 Yuan (~$410).

The rumors of the Meizu Pro 7’s processor have now drawn close to a finish, with confirmation from MediaTek, that Meizu will be forgoing a Samsung Exynos processor and powering the Meizu Pro 7 with the long-awaited MediaTek’s Helio X30.

MediaTek had revealed their June financial report, specifically about the revenue levels. MediaTek is reported to have made a total of NT$21.894 billion, an increase from last month’s (May) NT$18.37 billion. However, directly comparing MediaTek’s June report from last year, the company made less money in June 2017, with June 2016’s NT$24.87 billion a decrease of 11.79%.

Within the revenue report, MediaTek also confirmed that Meizu will be the first company to integrate MediaTek’s latest processor, the Helio X30, into their upcoming flagship smartphone.

MediaTek is betting that the Helio X30 will help increase the market share since the slipping of market power due to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 popularity. According to the MediaTek, they are also keen on releasing another new processor in the second half of the year.

Although MediaTek has announced Meizu will have a device powered by Helio X30 processor, the smartphone company haven’t officially announced the Pro 7.

The feature will be a secondary screen at the rear will be expected to be a 2-inch display that will provide notifications and act as a camera timer.

In terms of specifications, the Pro 7 will be expected to use a 5.2-inch screen at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (FHD). The high-end variant will be accompanied by 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. For cameras, the smartphone will have dual camera setup with two 12-megapixel cameras (Sony IMX386 and IMX286) and front 16-megapixel shooter.

The expected cost of the Pro 7 will start at ¥2799 (6GB + 128 GB) and the higher variant ¥3299 (8GB + 128 GB). Furthermore, the Pro 7 Plus will be expected to start at ¥3299 (4GB + 64GB), ¥3599 (6GB + 128GB) and the ¥3799 (8GB + 128GB).

Meizu continues to tease its upcoming flagship model ahead of its launch which rumour says is coming up later this month. We have seen a lot of renders of the Pro 7 that we already have our fill of the design and just want to have the chance to see if the hardware is as powerful as the design. Perhaps, a benchmark test would suffice in that regard but we’ll have to wait a little longer. Instead of a benchmark for the Helio X30 the device would feature, the latest detail seems to be a sample photo shot by the Pro 7.

The photo was shared on Weibo recently by Meizu’s new VP Jeffery Wang and he did not in any way hint at the camera with which the photo was shot. But one major tip that got us suspecting this is the Pro7’s photo is that the phone the Meizu VP was using was listed by Weibo as “Meizu phone”. Now, Weibo usually displays the exact smartphone or device posts were sent it from n but in this case, the only thing displayed is “Meizu phone”. This could be as a result of the model not being recognised since it is a new one that is yet to be released.

In addition, the photo contains one feature that makes it unlikely to be shot by the Pro 6s, Pro 6 Plus or earlier Meizu flagship models. That feature is a blurred background captured in a manner that suggests a dual camera setup at play. The Meizu Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus are expected to feature a 12MP Sony IMX386+ 12MP Sony IMX286 sensors at the back while there will be a 16MP front-facing selfie camera up front. The dual cameras are capable of capturing such crisp clear photo with a focus on the subject, thus blurring the background. The Pro 7 is also expected to be the first smartphone to launch with MedaTek’s Deca-core Helio X30 chip and that could also contribute to the amazing shot captured. But then, we can’t be so sure if this was actually shot by the Pro 7. Since it was shared on Weibo, there is no way to check the EXIF data of the photo.

Meizu Pro 7 isn’t a new entrant into the news, the flagship has been the subject of dozens of leaks which has not only revealed its likely specifications but also gifted us with the possible renders of the device. One thing that has been consistent is the renders of the Pro 7 which has shown the device sporting both a front and rear display.  The renders of the Pro 7 has once again leaked, this time around in a video clip that is the product of a collaboration between Twitter tipster OnLeaks and tech blog Compareraja.

The video seems to be an unofficial render produced using CAD gotten from Meizu’s factory. The 22-seconds clip shows the Pro 7 and its sibling, the Pro 7 Plus in 360 degrees, giving us a view of all aspects of the device. The video supports earlier claims that the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus will only be different from each other in size, design-wise. While the Pro 7 Plus will come in at 5.7 inches in display size, the Pro 7 will have a 5.2-inch display.

Meizu Pro 7 is expected to be the first smartphone to launch with MedaTek’s Deca-core Helio X30 chip and that is almost confirmed. There are talks of a high-end model with 8GB of RAM and with the growing trend of 8GB RAM-packing flagships, that could become a reality. In addition, both the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus are tipped to feature a 12MP Sony IMX386+Sony IMX286 sensors at the back. Successive render images have consistently captured the dual lens camera setup the Pro 7 and  Pro 7 Plus will come with. The front camera is said to have a 16MP sensor. The Pro 7 models will come clutching a Titanium alloy body and will have a ring flash with 10 LEDs at the back.

One interesting feature the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus are tipped to feature is the USB Type-C which will be a 24-pin USB connector system that would help both devices to become a host or a device. It can adopt either role depending on what is detected at the other end. These types of ports are called Dual-Role-Data (DRD). When two such devices are connected, the roles of a host or a device can be randomly assigned. A swap can be commanded from either device.

The Meizu Pro 7 Plus price was also leaked and should start at around $500 USD (around 3299 Yuan). The 6GB RAM+128GB storage version is expected to be priced at $550 (around 3599 Yuan). The topmost model with 8GB RAM + 128 GB storage is said to be priced at $580 (~3799 Yuan). On the other hand, the Pro 7 is tipped to start at  $410 (~2799 Yuan) and that price is expected to go as high as $560 (~3299 Yuan) for the higher variant. The Meizu Pro 7 is shaping up to be an interesting device, thanks to its secondary display.

Initially we had thought the Pro 7’s secondary display was an e-ink type but a bunch of live images that appeared last week revealed its a smaller LCD display.

More live images have been posted on Weibo by @Digital Chat Station and this time we get a closer look at the dual rear cameras. Leaked specification details say the rear cameras are a combination of a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor and a 12MP IMX268. The former is the same sensor in the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and the Meizu MX6.

The cameras are positioned horizontally and sit above the secondary display. There is also a dual LED flash flanking it on the left. It is unknown what configuration Meizu will use for its dual cameras. We have seen more big manufacturers join the wide angle + telephoto lens train but if it is aiming for a superior low light performance, Huawei’s way may be the path it takes.

In addition to the picture focusing on the camera, a second one shows the secondary display in action. From the looks of it, there is a PAC-MAN-like game running on it. It appears, the display will not only show notifications but work like the primary one.

A third image shows a bunch of rear shells with cut-outs for the rear display and cameras. The shells come in blue, red, gold, rose gold and black. It is interesting to see Meizu is bringing new colors (red and blue) to its flagship line. They look good on the Blue Charm M5C, so they should look good on the Pro 7 too.

The renders were shared by a Chinese tipster on Weibo and it shows the protective shell was custom-made for the Pro 7. The case is touted to offer 360-degree protection, that is all sides of the device will be adequately protected. While we have seen almost all that the Pro 7 has to offer in terms of design, these leaked render answers some minor questions yet to be attended to. One of such is the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack on the Pro 7. The power button has a roughened surface which will likely be to help differentiate it from the volume rockers. You may want to ask if that is relevant. Well, it is for people like me who sometimes gets confused in the dark which of the button does what.

The renders also reveal the likelihood of a USB Type-C port featuring on the Pro 7. The secondary display and rear dual cameras are also visible at the rear and up front, the disappointing large bezels are unfortunate additions we’ll have to deal with on the Pro 7. Only recently, we got a leak that hinted that the elusive Meizu Pro 7 will finally be launched on July 26 which is barely a month away but that is yet to be confirmed by the company. While we may still be sceptical about that date, a new leak from a popular tech blogger on Weibo has restated that the Pro 7 will indeed be launched along with the Pro 7 Plus on July 26. The tipster claims the rumour has over 95% accuracy, meaning the Pro 7 may actually make its debut towards the end of next month.

Already we have seen the real renders of the Pro 7 revealing both the front and the rear design, including the secondary e-ink display located at the rear. The flagship model is expected to feature a well-studded specs lineup in addition to the nice design it has been revealed to come with. Among the rumoured specification is an Helio X30 chip, a 5.5-inch display, mBack home button and fast charging technology.

The Meizu Pro 7 is expected to feature a dual camera setup which is tipped to be composed of a Sony IMX386 main sensor and a Sony IMX286 secondary sensor. This would make the Pro 7 Meizu’s first dual camera phone. There are rumours of an Exynos 8895-powered version coming also. Other specs include a 16MP front camera, 3.5mm audio jack as well as a USB Type-C port and more. Meizu will offload the full package next month, that is if the rumours of a July 26 launch turns out to be true. Nothing has officially been revealed in that regard as at this moment so don’t get your expectation too high.

Finally, the real photo of Meizu‘s “most-wanted” flagship Pro 7 that has been the subject of rumours since last year has appeared online showing us what could be the real deal from various angles. The design of the Pro 7 recently leaked showing an innovative concept, a secondary display located at the back of the smartphone, something we have never seen before. Don’t get it all wrong, we know secondary displays are not new, the likes of LG, Yotaphone have been using that all this while but the thing is that the location has always been at the front, hovering above the main display. In contrast, that of Meizu is located on the top left corner of the back casing.

Taking a closer look at the leaked photos, we can gather that the display will have a curved glass on top and unfortunately, there is still a sizeable amount of bezels around the display both at the top and bottom. The side bezels are quite thin but since they are there, the black borders around the display are still visible. We already know the device will have a front fingerprint sensor located on the mBack button. There seems to be a single opening for the selfie camera up front without any other opening. The working home screen carries a theme which looks like Android Nougat, of course with a touch of Meizu’s Flyme OS. 

The rear view offers a view of the secondary display in action and seems to be a miniature replica of the front home screen. As beautiful as the design may be, we are yet to see its spectacular importance apart from keeping you from opening up the main display all the time there is a notification beep. The rear display also houses the rear camera which is a dual setup as well as a LED flash in the same square. Also visible, is the U-shaped antenna band design wich fuses with the metal body.  

We still got to see the device captured from the side but the photo is not clear enough for us to make out the features located at the bottom edge and the side rockers present.  Obviously, the power button and the volume rockers will be by the side but at the bottom, we can’t tell if it is a USB Type-C port from the blurred photo.

This latest set of leaked photos is an indication that the Pro 7 may likely be launched soon. The Pro 7 is expected to pack a MediaTek Helio X30 chip and from the leaked renders, the flagship model will likely be available in Gold and Black colours. There may be more colour variants aside from these two, though.

Just recently, the Meizu Pro 7 was revealed as launching on July 26 which is next month. There is another leak which reaffirms that the Pro 7 will indeed be launched in July. The leak also says the Pro 7 may likely go on sale on August 4 after the July 26 launch event.

Meizu Pro 7 is the company’s flagship for this year and the device is expected to come with a spectacular design which has already been exposed and a powerful specs lineup. The device will be launched alongside the Pro 7 Plus with a bigger display. The prices of both the Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus have now leaked and they are perhaps more than you’d expect. The Pro 7 will retail for 2799 Yuan (~$409) for the base model while the higher version will carry a price tag of 3299 Yuan (around $484).  On the other hand, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus will start at 3299 yuan (~$484) while the higher version will sell for 3799 yuan (~$555). The prices are ridiclously high such that these are too bad instead of too good to be true.

In addition, the latest rumored specs of the Pro 7 tips the device as packing a 5.5-inch display as against 5.2 inches on previous leakes. However, the new leak also tips the Pro 7 as coming with a MeidaTek Helio X30 chip. and a dual Sony IMX386 + IMX286 dual cameras among others. But we still don’t know if the product with a Exynos 8895 version but there are rumours it does. Other specs include a 16MP front camera, 3.5mm audio jack as well as a USB Type-C port. The device is also expected to come with Meizu’s trademark mBack home button and its fast charging technology. We won’t forget in a hurry the e-ink secondary display the Pro 7 is said to come with which would be located at the rear and would show notifcations as well as display time, date etc.

Meizu has been unusually low in the number of smartphones they have released so far this year when compared with smartphones released last year. Apart from the launch of the Meizu E2 with its spectacular LED flash design, we are yet to see a new model with flagship design. But all that will likely be changing soon as the tech giant will launch the long awaited Pro 7 soon. 

The Meizu Pro has been the subject of recent rumours and has been a long awaited device. The flagship model has now tipped as coming on July 26. The tip is an unofficial one that can’t really be authenticated so we can treat it as a rumour. But then, anything is possible when it comes to China’s OEMs and rumours/ leaks.

The leaked renders of the Pro 7 which have made the rounds over the week, all make the Pro 7 a smartphone to look forward to. The design looks like an innovative one with a secondary display stationed at the back of the device. The secondary display will show notifications like incoming messages, missed calls, WeChat messages, date and time. The display is said to be an E-ink display.

Apart from the secondary display, the Meizu Pro 7 is also expected to come with an innovative design which includes an ultra-thin frame and Meizu’s mBack. The device is also tipped as packing a MediaTek Helio X30 chip, a 5.2-inch 1080p display up front and a dual Sony IMX386 + IMX286 dual cameras among others. The Meizu Pro 7 Plus is also expected to debut along with the Pro 7 with a larger 5.7-inch 2K screen and likely equipped with a Samsung Exynos 8895 processor, or Helio X30 standard version of the processor.
