OnePlus 12 x Pixelworks

In the OnePlus 12’s review, we said that the OnePlus 12 didn’t squeeze the full potential of the Snapdragon 8 Gen3. However, I forgot to tell you that it’s not at its best for gaming experience. That’s because yet another chip in this phone hasn’t flexed its muscles, which is the Pixelworks X7 with integrations of the company’s IRX Rendering Acceleration solution and IRX device tuning services.

We got the global version of the OnePlus 12 a week ago, so we think this is a very good chance to tell you how this independent chip turns the phone into a super smooth gaming phone, but meanwhile, stay cool and chill.

Pixelworks X7 Independent Visual Processor

I’m sure you’ve heard of Pixelworks, they’ve been working on making smartphones obtain better gaming experience since 2016. The company has more than 20 years of history delivering innovative image-processing solutions to consumer electronics, professional displays, and video streaming services. The Pixelworks X7 is the most comprehensive visual processor designed for flagships and high-performance smartphones.

IRX Gaming Experience

It delivers higher frame rates, higher resolutions, and detailed graphics without draining excessive power. The just-released OnePlus 12 global version is armored with the X7 visual processor and IRX technology certification to deliver IRX gaming experience. It really isn’t a gimmick this time, and we’ll show you the upgrades in an easy-to-understand way.

Now we’re in Genshin Impact, and I’m having my character running around. The gaming experience is actually not bad right now, after all the OnePlus 12 is also a flagship phone. Just keep the graphics in mind, as

this gaming experience will be taken to the next level. Slide down from the bottom right corner to open the Gaming Center, now you can see the main features that are only available with the X7 visual processor: Adaptive Frame Booster and Hyper Resolution.

We used to see similar features on other phones, but almost all of them cannot work together at the same time. While the most surprising thing is that on this OnePlus 12 driven by the Pixelworks X7, you can activate both Adaptive Frame Booster and Hyper Resolution at the same time, enjoying higher framerate and better graphic details.

Now let’s go back to the game and take a look around. Can you feel the difference?

Gaming Tests

Actually, you may not be able to see much of a difference due to the resolution of the phone’s Screen recording and the framerate of our video. Don’t worry, I’ll show you the difference in slow-motion videos, and much closer shots, with screenshots as well. Visually they really do look like a completely different experience, and if your eyes are sensitive enough, the images are not only more detailed, but the motion is also much smoother. This is really more natural and smoother than any of our previous test results on Genshin Impact.

For example, in this scene, after turning on Hyper Resolution, you can obviously see that the image and edges get sharper. The texture of the wall here can be more clearly presented, which is something that used to be found only with desktop-level graphic hardware. The whole graphics just look more delicate. Almost all mobile games are wasting these phones’ displays, so I’m really glad the OnePlus 12 can put it to better use with the X7 visual processor.

To verify its actual boosting effect, we also did some tests apart from observing with our eyes.

In addition to learning the gap between these two features on and off on the OnePlus 12, we also brought a Xiaomi 14 Pro as a reference for comparison, and they are both powered by the Snapdragon 8Gen3 chip. Here let’s see how the OnePlus 12 with the X7 processor challenges its rivals.

After turning on Adaptive Frame Booster, the OnePlus 12 just kept Genshin Impact running at 120fps, while the Xiaomi 14 Pro does have to take the face of the game’s frame lock at 60fps.

As the X7 visual processor helps the GPU share the rendering pressure, the whole gaming on OnePlus 12 is less fluctuated but surprisingly smooth. I barely noticed the lag due to any framerate jitters. There is no doubt that the OnePlus 12 has a better gaming experience during the tests.

At the same time, another benefit is that: the OnePlus 12 was achieving smooth 120fps at the display end while its GPU was running at 40fps, so it even consumed less power than the Xiaomi 14 Pro!

As you can see, OnePlus 12’s power consumption is instead lower with higher-framerate gaming. Being power-saving during gaming is what those phone brands should figure out in the future. After all, playing games with a charging cable plugged in is always a terrible experience.

Overheating is always another big problem for mobile gaming. But this time, with the X7 processor providing rendering support and freeing up the CPU and GPU, the phone didn’t get heated up easily. After 20-min gaming test, they both have good temperature control, but the max temperature we detected on Xiaomi 14 Pro was still a bit higher.

Meanwhile, we still have concerns about gaming latency when turned on frame interpolation. So let’s test the touch latency in another game, PUBG mobile.

The FPS game is a perfect option to showcase the concerns. And I called up my colleague for a blind test. Since most phones aren’t thoroughly optimized for touch latency, while the OnePlus 12’s frame booster doesn’t seem to produce noticeable latency, it was almost impossible for him to tell which test was the result of the frame booster.

Extremely Low Latency Added

Then I had to use the slow-motion video again to confirm how much latency was added. By comparing in slow motion, turning on this feature did increase the touch latency by roughly 20 milliseconds. So if it were you, would you be able to detect the gap?

We really want to show you how mobile gaming is going to evolve, as we’re excited to see something happening on the compact machines. I don’t know if you have more ideas about the Pixelworks‘ X7 visual processor and IRX gaming experience for the OnePlus 12. But Pixelworks’ idea of bringing a technology that used to be part of TVs to smartphones is genius. As it does benefit a lot of mobile gamers, Pixelworks definitely deserves wider attention.

Earlier this week, iQOO had officially announced the launch date for its upcoming Neo5S smartphone. Now, the company has teased the upcoming handset, showcasing its dual chip technology and other features.

The smartphone maker shared the teaser on its official Weibo account (a Chinese microblogging website). In the latest social media post, the company teased the device’s “Dual Core” chip technology, which consists of the primary Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC paired with a dedicated and independent display chip as well. This secondary chipset brings MEMC support, which enables the smartphone to offer an improved gaming performance through smoother frame rate in FPS titles while displaying more rich colors.

Apart from these two aspects, the brand even shared another design feature as well. The Neo5S will feature advanced heat dissipation technology that will help the device keep its thermals in check. This would be even more important considering that the device is being marketed towards gamers. With long periods of gaming, smartphone tends to heat up in intensive titles. So, a cooling mechanism is an important aspect in any modern smartphones that offer capable performance.

For those unaware, the Neo5S is set to be officially unveiled on 20th December 2021. It is expected to launch with a 120Hz display alongside up to 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Other features include 48 megapixel triple camera setup on the rear while the front houses a 16 megapixel selfie shooter. It will even support 66W fast charging and ship with OriginOS Ocean UI based on Android OS.

Earlier this year, in May, Meizu had launched its flagship smartphones in the form of the Meizu 17 series. Ever since the devices got launched, the company has been adding more and more features to the phones.

In the latest development, Meizu has announced that the Meizu 17 series smartphones will now get MEMC Dynamic Frame Compensation Technology. What it does is that it artificially adds frames to a video with a low frame rate so that it has a higher frame rate and offers a smooth effect. Along with MEMC technology, the new update will also offer improvements with regards to the graphics processor, “Flyme Magic” fast pairing system, automatic camera exposure, and introduce new photo editing features. Recruitment of beta testers for the update is expected to take place in the coming days while the update is expected to be available for users by the end of this year.

Soon after launching the flagship smartphones with 90Hz refresh rate support, the company released an update that enabled 120Hz refresh rate and added support for features like DC Dimming and HDR Playback.

After that, the company released an update that added support for stabilization for video recording from all cameras. Recently, the company had rolled out an important update with several bug fixes and a few new features.

In terms of specifications, both Meizu 17 and 17 Pro feature a 6.6-inch S-AMOLED Full HD+ display which comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Under the hood, the devices are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 octa-core processor.

The Meizu 17 has a quad-camera setup that includes a 64-megapixel primary shooter, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 5-megapixel macro lens. On the other hand, the Pro model comes with a 64-megapixel main lens, an 8-megapixel telephoto shooter, a 32-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 0.3MP ToF lens.

Both the devices are equipped with a 20-megapixel front-facing snapper for taking selfies and video calling. Compared to the standard model, the Pro variant comes with features like ceramic chassis, LPDDR5 RAM, and 27W fast wireless charging.

Recently, it was reported by a leaker from China that Xiaomi Mi 10 series smartphones come with support for MEMC function but it isn’t enabled. Now, it is being claimed that the company could soon start rolling out OTA update to enable the MEMC feature.

For those who are unaware, MEMC stands for Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation. It basically adds frames to a video with a low frame rate so that it has a higher frame rate and gives a smooth effect.

To estimate the trajectory of the high-speed moving object in a picture, the technology makes use of hardware chips and some software algorithm. The MEMC technology was originally used in TVs and different companies have different names for it, including MotionFlow, TruMotion, Auto Motion Plus, SMR, etc.

Several flagship smartphones also come with support for MEMC technology, including the Black Shark 3, OPPO Find X2, and OnePlus 8, among others. Now, as per the reports, the Mi 10 series will also join the list soon.

Earlier today (22nd May 2020), Lu Weibing, the Vice President of Xiaomi Group and Redmi General Manager, announced a bunch of upcoming products. One of the new launches will be for the Redmi Smart TV X series, which will feature new technologies like MEMC and a new smart 60Hz intelligent compensation algorithm.

For those unaware, MEMC technology is basically a new method through which companies artificially create additional frames for movies and videos. In other words, the movies which are captured at 21 or 30fps are converted to 60 or even 120fps videos. This helps in making the cinematic experience a lot smoother and more visually appealing.

Honor will be hosting the Smart Life product launch event on May 18. A number of devices are expected at this event including a new smart TV. This TV has now confirmed to arrive with MEMC technology according to the latest teaser by the brand on Weibo.

MEMC (Motion Estimation / Motion Compensation) is not a new tech. It has been shipping with high-end televisions for a while now. Honor will be soon joining this bandwagon with its upcoming rumored 65-inch smart TV.

In a nutshell, MEMC adds extra frames into the video to make it play smoother. Though companies hype it, movies are actually not meant to be watched with higher frame rates. Standard movies are shot at 24fps and it is the best way to consume content.

On the other hand, MEMC, which is also known as ‘Motion Smoothing’ and ‘Soap Opera Effect’ is useful while playing video games. More the number of frames, better the gameplay with smoother animations.

These days, even smartphones come with this functionality. OnePlus promoted it for OnePlus 8 Pro but after the launch, the company did not advertise it all. Personally, I feel like MEMC is fine for TVs (only video games) but on phones, it is overkill without any benefit.

Anyway, we will know more about this Honor smart TV with MEMC when it will go official next week.

It was erroneously stated in the first published version of this post that the OnePlus 8 Pro will be the first smartphone with MEMC technology. The post has now been corrected.

When it comes to smartphones, one major feature that is compared across brands is the camera performance. However, lately, another area where manufacturers are trying to outdo each other is in the display department. From a shift from LCDs to AMOLED panels; to special chips that upscale SDR to HDR; and to screens with high refresh rates – the display of a phone is now more important than ever.

The upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro will have a 120Hz refresh rate just like the Galaxy S20 series and the OPPO Find X2. This refresh rate is even higher than that of the OnePlus 7 Pro which has a 90Hz refresh rate.

While a display with a higher refresh rate brings a whole new experience to users, there is not a lot of content out there that takes advantage of this new feature on your phone as most videos you watch play at 24 fps or 30fps. To solve this problem of lack of content, OnePlus has come up with a solution, albeit not a unique one.

MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation)

MEMC is a feature found in a lot of TVs and is infamously called the “Soap opera effect” because of the way it makes what you are watching look like a soap opera. On some TVs, it is called motion smoothing, and how it works is by artificially adding frames to a video with a low frame rate so that it has a higher frame rate and gives it that smooth effect. The video below shows the feature in action.

As you can see, the clips shown in the video above when the feature is turned on play much smoother than when the feature is turned off. However, when playback is set to slow motion, you can see the level of detail is low when MEMC is on.

However, it has its disadvantages and a lot of movie directors are against watching a movie with the feature turned on.

MEMC in phones

Back in January, Pete Lau, CEO and founder of OnePlus, revealed that they have created a custom MEMC chip that can “push ordinary 30fps video to 120fps, so the video takes advantage of our 120Hz Fluid Display”.

Since we know the OnePlus 8 Pro is the one with a 120Hz Fluid Display, it will come with the MEMC chip. The OnePlus 8 has a 90Hz display and most likely won’t have the chip.

The OnePlus 8 isn’t the first phone to have a MEMC chip. Black Shark introduced it to phones back in 2018 and its Black Shark 3 flagship has a new version called MEMC 2.0. The OPPO Find X2 Pro also has a similar chip but called the “O1 Ultra Vision Engine” which has a feature called Motion Clear that upscale 30fps content to 60fps or 120fps.

Prior to the release of the aforementioned phones, MediaTek processors released as far back as 2015 (for example, the Helio X10) have come with a feature called Clear Motion that does the same job as a MEMC chip.

OnePlus’s MEMC chip will use what it calls High Frame 2.0 to convert content from a lower frame rate to a higher frame rate. The manufacturer even released a list of apps that are supported and it includes YouTube, Netflix, Hotstar, MXPlayer, VLC, Prime Video, and even the Gallery app on your phone.

OnePlus is not limiting the feature to just video players and streaming apps but also includes games such as Vain Glory. At launch, the feature will work with a total of 12 video players and streaming apps and 12 games. More apps and games are expected to be added in the future.

Disadvantages of MEMC in phones

The major and only disadvantage we believe it will bring is a reduction in battery life. Just as using your phone at the highest refresh rate will affect battery life, High Frame 2.0 is also expected to further drain your battery faster.

OnePlus has not yet said anything about it yet and may have actually found a way to minimize battery drain, but nevertheless, it will still be there. However, we expect there will be a way to turn off the feature to conserve battery or if you do not like it in the first place.

Will more manufacturers follow in OnePlus’ footsteps?

Most likely. If the feature is well received, we may see more phones with high refresh rates come with a similar or improved feature. A lot more people consume content on their phones from movies to TV shows and even sports games which actually benefit most from motion smoothing. So this looks like a feature that may become standard in flagship phones in a year or two.
