Xiaomi sells a number of popular products apart from smartphones. One such series is the company’s lineup of fitness bands. Currently, the Mi band is in its fourth generation with Mi Band 4 launched back in June 2019. This wearable has so far received multiple updates bringing new features and fixing bugs. Now, the company is rolling out a new firmware update for both Mi Band 4 and Mi Band 3 from 2018 that adds new functionality to let users unlock laptops running Windows 10.

The Mi Band 4 has been receiving firmware updates almost every month. However, since November these updates have almost always fixed bugs instead of adding any new features to Mi Band 3 or Mi Band 4. Now the latest firmware that is being rolled out by the company is finally bringing a change to these fitness trackers in a very long time.

The latest update bumps up the firmware version of Mi Band 4 to V1.0.9.42 from V1.0.9.34 and adds a function to unlock Windows 10 laptops. Unfortunately, this functionality is only limited to users in India as of now. Although unlocking laptops via Mi Band 3 and 4 was possible earlier, it required a third-party app. But now the function has been officially integrated into the Mi Fit app.

Additionally, the new firmware update on both trackers also brings improvement in step counter by fixing ghost steps issues. Also, as the firmware update comes bundled with the Mi Fit app update, the app’s version has been now incremented to 4.0.17 with improved user experience by fixing known bugs and adding support for Apple ID sign-in.

Xiaomi’s best selling Mi Band series is getting a new update tomorrow i.e. June 11. Before its official release, we have got some exciting news about the processor that powers the new Mi Band 4. Huami’s CEO, Wang Huang has just teased that the AI-powered Huangshang No.1 chip has been mass-produced. He’s likely talking about the Mi Band 4 since the official Mi Band page on Weibo has forwarded his post.

Huangshan No.1 was released late last year by Huami. The processor is said to be more efficient than ARM’s Cortex M4 based competitors. This is a really big move for Xiaomi since it would mean that the Chinese smartphone maker is trying its hands on an open-source RISC-V based processor instead of the more popular ARM alternative. The timing is also significant, since just a couple of days back, we reported that Qualcomm made a big investment in SiFive, the leading provider of RISC-V based processor IP. So, it looks like companies are increasingly looking for alternatives to ARM’s Cortex based chip designs.

The Huangshan No. 1 (MHS001) is the world’s first wearable processor that features an integrated AI-neural network. There are four core artificial intelligence engines — cardiac biometrics engine, ECG, ECG Pro, and Hearth Rhythm Abnormality Monitoring Engine.

It’s also an important milestone for Huami as well. Mi Band series has a tradition of selling millions of units. This means it will be the first time the Huangshan No.1 is mass produced in millions. Its departure from ARM-based Cortex IP is a big move, especially after what happened to Huawei and Hisilicon after the US ban.

Despite their popularity, Xiaomi‘s range of Mi Bands often come with simple packaging boxes. The Mi Band 3’s packaging box was a square-shaped box just like the Band 2’s but with a transparent plastic cover which allows buyers to savour the beauty even before buying. The Chinese company has now unveiled a redesigned Mi Band 3 packaging box. 

The new retail box is no longer square-shaped rather, it adopts a rectangular parallelepiped shape with a colourful design. The packaging box won’t all have the same colours. Instead, the Band 3’s new box casing will have a colour shade matching the colour of the straps. As would be recalled, the Band 3 comes with black, blue, and orange straps but there is a fourth colour which is Burgundy.

As a reminder, the Mi Band 3 is an improved version of the Band 2 which was released in 2016. Xiaomi is globetrotting and launching new phones and products in every country it is visiting. Last week it officially entered into the UK market, where it launched the Mi 8 Pro, Redmi 6A, and the Mi Scooter among others. Yesterday, it was the turn of Egypt and it announced the Mi 8 Pro and the Mi 8 Lite.

The Mi 8 Pro shares the same specs as the regular Mi 8 but has an in-display fingerprint scanner instead of a rear-mounted one. The version sold in Egypt has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and is priced at EGP 9,999.

The Mi 8 Lite is the least powerful model in the Mi 8 series. It is powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor and comes in 4GB RAM + 64GB and 6GB RAM + 128GB variants. The 4GB model is priced at EGP 4,666 while the 6GB RAM version will sell for EGP 5,444.

Xiaomi today officially entered the UK market with the launch of its Mi 8 Pro flagship smartphone. In the UK, Xiaomi will also open a brick-and-mortar Mi Store in Westfield London on 18th November.

Prior to the company’s official debut in the UK, Xiaomi already had a presence in the European market with Spain where the company has 10 stores. Earlier this year in May, Xiaomi started operations in France and Italy as well.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro will be available in the UK from 9th November for an off-contract price of £499, which roughly converts to $654. We decided to check out whether this is indeed the case with the Mi Band 3. Our writers Jed, Habeeb, and Michele tested their Mi Band 3’s HR sensor on a tissue paper roll. Jed was able to get the reading pretty quickly and consistently on his Mi Band. Habeeb found it harder to get a reading from a tissue roll on his Mi Band 3, but even he managed to get a reading a few times. Finally, Michele’s Mi Band 3 didn’t register any readings, until he decided to gently tap the tissue paper roll (to mimic heartbeats). We believe other soft objects like a cloth could also register a heart rate reading on the new Mi Band. It seems as if the wearable picks up minute vibrations from the tissue roll and registers them for heartbeats.

It looks like only some Mi Band 3 models are affected by this issue. This might not be a deal breaker for most customers but it goes on to show how we can’t rely on inexpensive wearables like the Mi Band 3 for an accurate HR reading. Xiaomi launched the Mi Band 3 in May this year as a successor to the highly-successful Mi Band 2. Despite the success of the Mi Band 2, there were a couple of flaws, one being the inability of the heart rate monitor to track the heart rate reading of users with coloured skin. While that flaw has been fixed on the Mi Band 3, the credibility of the heart rate sensor is presently under scrutiny after a shocking discovery.

That discovery was made by some netizens who discovered that the Mi Band 3 can actually come out with a reading when strapped to a tissue paper. In order not to jump into a hasty conclusion, I carried out the same test with my Mi Band 3 and indeed a reading was obtained while it is strapped to a roll of tissue paper. This is unusual since the heart rate sensor is supposed to take the reading of the heart rate and the tissue paper is a non-living thing. Most smart bands and watches use light to track your blood. How it works is that an LED illuminates your capillaries and then a sensor adjacent to the light measures the frequency at which your blood pumps past. This is the heart rate measured in beats per minute (BPM).

This isn’t a general problem as a photo of a smartwatch that looks like a Fitbit Versa (we’re not sure) strapped on the tissue paper roll was also shared. The smartwatch didn’t come out with a reading just as it shouldn’t. That doesn’t mean the Mi Band 3 is alone in this boat. Most of the smart bands around come out with spurious readings that are nowhere near accurate. The handset is equipped with a mammoth 18:9 aspect ratio supporting display of 6.99 inches. The Snapdragon 636 SoC is the driving force of the phone. The handset receives power from 5,500mAh battery and it carries support for fast charging through USB-C.

For photography, the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 features 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup and a front-facing shooter of 8-megapixel. The other features of the Mi Max 3 include fingerprint sensor, IR blaster and microSD card slot.

In China, the Mi Max 3 was introduced in two models such as 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage + 6 GB RAM. These variants are selling in the home country with respective price tags of 1,699 Yuan (~$247) and 1,999 Yuan (~$290). It is available in color variants like Black, Gold and Blue in the home country.

The official Mijia Weibo account has released a bunch of unboxing pictures of the Mi Band 3 Commemorative Edition. Apart from it having NFC and a special serial number, this model offers the same features as the regular Mi Band 3.

The Mi band 3 will monitor your sleep, count your steps, notify you if you have been sitting for more than an hour and also display notifications from your connected device. It also has a heart rate sensor, a find my phone feature, and can even mute your phone.

Xiaomi’s latest smart bracelet, the Mi Band 3 has received a new update. The new update brings a new feature called night mode to the Mi Band 3.

The new feature comes bundled with the latest update for the Mi Fit app. According to to the description, the Mi Band 3’s brightness adjusts automatically after sunrise and sunset. Users will also be able to set the time manually if they want. Think of it like the night-mode feature on your smartphone and you should understand the way it works.

The night mode feature was first mentioned last month in an official Weibo post and has begun to roll out to users across the globe. The Mi Band 3 became available in China shortly after it was launched on May 31 and that has been so since then. The wearable is even shipping abroad thanks to third-party online retailers with the price almost competing with the 199 yuan price tag it adopts in China. Despite the rampant available, the Mi Band 3 has not been completely available. That is because Xiaomi is yet to release the NFC version into the market in China or elsewhere, almost two and a half month after its launch.

As you would recall, the Mi Band 3 was announced to have two models, a Bluetooth version and another version with NFC alongside Bluetooth connectivity. For those who may not know, NFC means Near Field Communication and it refers to a set of communication protocols that allow two electronic devices to establish communication when they are within 4cm of each other. With this feature, the Mi Band 3 can be used for contactless payments using Mi Pay in China. Since it only supports Mi Pay, its use may be limited.

Even its use in China isn’t an easy ride as Xiaomi has hinted that the NFC version is still being tested. The company first shared a picture of the Mi Band 3 with the Bus payment interface on the OLED display and a black strap on August 10. A second picture was shared on Tuesday but this time the Band 3 has a light brown strap. The picture still shows the Mi Pay door card logo with a rider that it is still being tested. The bus card feature will be enabled for use in 167 cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Tianjin, and several others. The version is compatible with non-Xiaomi NFC smartphones.

Xiaomi has revealed the launch of the Mi Band 3 for the Taiwanese market will hold on August 24. The company had earlier launched the Mi 8, Redmi 6 and Mi A2 in Taiwan towards the end of July but the Mi Band 3 wasn’t bundled along with the trio. Instead, the Mi Band 3 will be launched alongside the Mi Max 3 that had earlier been scheduled to launch on August 24.

The Mi Band 3 was first launched in China on May 31 along with the Mi 8, Mi 8 SE and Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The device comes with some improvement over the Band 2. It even included an NFC-packing version which is yet to go on sale more than two months after it was announced. Xiaomi did hint recently that the NIFC variant will be available soon. So, Taiwan will be getting just the regular variant without NFC but packing other useful features. The Band 3 is priced at 169 yuan in China ( about NT$750).

In addition, the Mi Max 3 6.9-inch phablet will be made available in Taiwan. The device is available in 4GB + 64Gb combo and 6GB + 128GB variant. We don’t know the price tag it would adopt in Taiwan but it shouldn’t be too different from the 1,699 Yuan (~$252) starting price for the Max 3 in China. The pictures of the two customized versions were shared online and there isn’t really anything special to be excited about. The difference with the regular Mi Band 3 is that a couple of texts in Chinese is printed on the wristband, including Xiaomi’s stock code “1810”. The same thing goes for the Amazfit Bip Lite custom version.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 was unveiled on May 31 to replace the Mi Band 2 fitness tracker from last year. The Chinese manufacturer has now rolled out the very first software update for Mi Band 3 users. The new update brings the handy feature pf phone mute that allows Mi Band 3 users to remotely mute a paired smartphone.

Phone mute can be helpful in scenarios when Mi Band 3 users may want to mute a smartphone that is physically inaccessible. For example, a student can use the new feature on Mi Band 3 to mute his smartphone that is kept in a bag in an exam hall. Currently, the update is only available for the Android users. The company is yet to confirm on the arrival of iOS version of the update.

The Mi Band 3 is now available for buying in the home country of China with a price tag of 169 Yuan ($26). In September, Xiaomi will be selling the NFC edition of the fitness tracker with a pricing of 199 Yuan ($30).

The Mi Band 2’s successor model has an OLED display of 0.78 inches. The touchscreen gestures available on it allow users to access features through swiping actions. Apart from showing messages and call view/reject feature, the fitness band is equipped with numerous health-centric features such as heart rate monitor, sleep tracker, calorie counter, sedentary reminder and more.

The Mi Band 3 is equipped with a redesigned strap to ensure that the capsule device remains intact. It is an IP67 rated dustproof and water-resistant device. It includes a 110mAh battery that can last for up to 20 days on a single charge. The device can be availed in colors like Black, Red and Blue.

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 will officially go on its first sale tomorrow (June 5) since after its launch on May 31. The fitness band comes with an affordable price tag of 169 yuan (~$26) and is already open for reservation via Mi Home. As at the time of writing this report, the Mi Band 3 reservations had surpassed 640,000 persons in China. Although reservations don’t usually translate into actual sales figure, we expect the device to get sold out in seconds when sales open tomorrow as a result of its cheap price tag.

The Mi Band 3  is an improved version of the Band 2 which was released in 2016. The Band 3 features a 0.78-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen.  which offer a better viewing and user experience. The display can show call notifications and an option to reject calls and also incoming messages on a paired smartphone. The rubber strap also got some improvement which ensures it isn’t just comfortable, the fitness tracker cannot fall off.

It comes with way more functions when compared to the Band 2. Some of the functions include heart rate monitor, weather forecast, alarm clock, daily steps count, sedentary reminder, sleep monitor, event reminder and find my phone function. At a launch event in Shenzhen, China, Xiaomi has today launched its flagship smartphone — Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, as well as the latest version of its operating system, MIUI 10. Along with that, the China-based manufacturer has also launched its next-generation fitness tracker — Mi Band 3.

The Mi Band 3 comes with a 0.78-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen. The company says that the display is designed with an aim to offer a better experience for viewing / rejecting calls and messages.

Earlier, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun had said that the wristband of Mi Band 3 has been redesigned to ensure that the tracker doesn’t fall off from the strap, which a lot of users complained about for its predecessor.

Like the predecessor Mi Band 2, the successor edition sports a monochrome OLED screen which puts to rest those rumors that had claimed that it would be equipped with a color display. Ahead of its official announcement, Xiaomi has released a new teaser that reveals that the Mi Band 3 will be equipped with a new Tilt to Wake feature.

The first-generation Mi Band lacked a display and users had also complained that it came with a mediocre quality strap. Also, there was a risk of losing the capsule-like device since it was easily detachable while engaging in sports activity. A new teaser for the Mi band 3 may hint at Xiaomi’s next smartband having SIM connectivity. One of China’s top network operators, China Unicom, released a new poster for the upcoming band which makes us wonder what hidden feature the device has.

The poster shows a flyover with different icons which includes a car, a computer, a building, a truck and a shopping bag. There is also a text that roughly translates to “connects you to the world”.

The shopping bag sort of hints at the Mi Band 3 supporting purchases as it is reported to have a NFC chip built-in. We’ll have to wait till Thursday to find out the details for the other features.

However, what is strange is China Unicom’s relationship with the new smartband which has got people asking if the band has an eSIM embedded in it.

Smartwatches like the Apple Watch Series 3 and the Huawei Watch 2 Pro have eSIMs but we haven’t heard of a smartband with one. We guess there is always a first time. Bear in mind that if it is true, it will drive up the price.
