The new streaming device is believed to be the successor to the Mi Box S that was announced in October 2018 but there is a chance it isn’t.

First reported by 9to5Google, this newly certified Mi Box has the model number MDZ-22-AG which is nearly identical to the MDZ-22-AB model number of the 2018 version. The images attached to the FCC documents also revealed that it has the same design as the Mi Box S but comes with a slightly different remote.

In addition, the images of the internals show that this new Mi Box has the same old Amlogic S905-H quad-core processor that powers the original Mi Box and the Mi Box S. There is also a copy of the user manual that says that the device is called Mi Box S. Based on these, we do not think this is a successor to the Mi Box S.

The photos show the same old black box design with the ports at the back. You get an audio output port, an HDMI port, a full-sized USB port, and a power input jack. The remote has the same button arrangement, save for the Netflix Button which is now white, and a button for Prime Video that replaces the Live TV button from the previous version.

Announced two years ago, the TV box now has a successor (if you want to call it that) called the Mi Box S. Is it worth buying? Read on to find out.

The Mi Box S has the same design as the Mi Box 4 sold in China but it comes in black and not white like its Chinese version. Obviously, it runs Android TV and not Xiaomi’s version of Android for TVs.

The design of the box is not the only new thing. The Mi Box S also comes with a new remote. The power button is now in the middle but still at the top and right below it is a Google Assistant microphone button. There is also a dedicated Netflix button, a Live TV button, and apps button. It runs Android 8.1 out of the box.

The Mi Box S supports 4K output and playback (4K at 60fps). With built-in Chromecast, you can also cast what is on your phone, tablet or PC screen to the TV. Thanks to Google Assistant, the Mi Box S will also control your supported smart home devices such as the thermostat and lights. You can also use the assistant to find a movie/show, ask it to play a song, or even ask it the weather.

The Mi Box S has the same internals as the Mi Box. It is powered by a Cortex-A53 quad-core chipset with a Mali-450 GPU and has 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The Mi Box S has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 for connectivity. It has an HDMI 2.0 port, a single USB 2.0 port, an audio output port, and a power input port. Just like the Mi Box, you can also connect a supported gamepad and play games on the big screen.

If you already own the Mi Box, there really is no reason to buy the Mi Box S. However, those who don’t already own an Android TV box should grab this not only because of the new design and remote but also because it’s cheaper than the original.

The Mi Box S is priced at $59.99 and is available for pre-order on Walmart. It will start to ship on November 6.

This device is currently being sold in China by Xiaomi as the Mi Box 4. However, a new report has revealed what its marketing name will be outside China.

The Mi Box 4 will be sold as the Mi Box S outside China. The name was found by the folks at XDA-Developers under the list of Google Play Certified devices. The list also reveals the device’s model as Mi Box 4.

The Mi Box S comes with a new design but packs the same internals as the Mi Box (Mi Box 3). It also comes with a redesigned remote with a dedicated Netflix button. It was seen at the FCC a couple of months ago. Since the original launched in the US, this should also be sold in the US.

The Mi Box S will support 4K streaming and video playback and should have Dolby Digital and DTS Surround Sound like its predecessor. There is no info with respect to its price but we presume it may sell for the same $70 price as the Mi Box. It should also come with Android TV Oreo out of the box.
