Yesterday, Samsung launched its 2024 lineup of Micro LED, Neo QLED, and OLED TVs at its home appliances product launch conference in China. Like numerous recent launch conferences from Samsung and other giants, this particular one was also focused on AI. Samsung’s 2024 Micro LED lineup comes with four different size options – 76/89/101/114 inches, where this year’s new additions are the 76-inch and 114-inch ones.

Great Micro LED panels paired with AI-based enhancements

The panels of this year’s TV lineup are reportedly made of sapphire and inorganic self-luminous pixels and come with a “Micro contrast technology” that eliminates the blurry boundaries to enhance the sharpness. The lineup also offers “Micro color” with 65,536 levels of control precision.

In addition to that, the TVs come with OTS Pro audio and video tracking technology. With support for built-in 6.2.2 channel with Dolby Atmos, it creates a “3D full surround sound” effect. It also offers a “Q Symphony” function which claims to enable the TV and sound bars to achieve a coordinated sound. Samsung is using the “NQ8 AI Gen 3” processor to perform the upscaling and other AI-based enhancements.

Notably, Samsung is aiming to start an “AI Screen Era” with these new products with features like 8K AI Upscaling Pro, AI Motion Enhancer, and more. In the launch event, the company shared its vision of bringing a more intuitive and convenient device experience than ever before.

Choi Seung-sik, the President of Samsung Electronics Greater China talked about the integration of AI into its connected technologies. “Samsung is integrating AI into our connected technologies, from Galaxy AI in mobile devices, to disruptive display technologies, to smart home improved through smart home appliances,”

With the global launch of Micro LED display among TVs this year, the Korean giant is set to make use of the new display tech in smaller display-size devices including smartwatches. Breaking the previous limitations, the Micro LED will now pave its way to the ultra-large display TV too. Micro LED Features

In a bid to commercialize the Micro LED for smartwatches, the company tends to replace OLED from its Galaxy Watch within a year. After creating the Micro LED team late last year, Samsung has already started the development of micro LED displays for smartwatches. Within a year of development and then the Research and Development stage, the display’s actual voyage on the small consumer electronic gadgets will start.

The new self-luminous display has small LEDs that measure less than 100㎛ (micrometers) in size. it is thinner and emits light without and backlight or color filter. In particular, Samsung’s Micro LED size is less than 50㎛ and the RCG elements are made of inorganic elements eliminating any burn issues while maintaining quality for over 100000 hours. These displays offer an exceptional contrast ratio while emitting light at the maximum brightness.

A recent rumor claims that the Giant is working on a “Galaxy Watch Ultra” model which will bundle the new Micro LED display. Following the footsteps of the Apple Watch Ultra, the new watch would feature a better display and enhanced features than the present Galaxy Watch models.

Following the advancement, we expect Micro LEDs to make their place in smartphones and other smart devices which would result in better brightness. However, the addition of a new display will significantly cost the user an arm and a leg.

Samsung Electronics has just unveiled a new product that it is targeting towards businesses and other commercial enterprises. It is the new 110 inch Micro LED TV, which was announced earlier today (10th December 2020).

The massive new TV was announced during an online event that the company hosted using the Webinar system, which is an interactive video conference solution that is used to introduce new products. Arriving at its most notable aspect, its display features Micro LED technology, which is touted to be the next generation for displays. It is a true self luminous TV that eliminates structures such as backlights and color filters by using micro LEDs in micrometer (㎛) units, and the LED itself emits light and color.

So, unlike a regular TV display, Micro LED panels RGB are the only ones that can emit light and color by itself. This allows one to experience natural colors and have a better viewing experience. The 110 inch Micro LED TV is similar to the South Korean tech giant’s previously launched, The Wall, which was also aimed at businesses and was one of the company’s first display that utilized Micro LED. A notable feature of the TV is its ‘Quad View (4Vue)’ function, which lets users divide the 110 inch display into four 50 inch screens.

Furthermore, the new Samsung TV features 4K resolution with more than 8 million micro LED elements in a size of just 3.3 square meters. Its MICRO AI Processor from the company’s semiconductor unit also helps the TV achieve best in class image quality even by micro LED standards. This processor is a dedicated chip that combines the  self-luminous characteristics and proprietary artificial intelligence algorithms, which is based on the quantum processor technology applied to QLED 8K TVs that helps offer a near perfect real world color reproduction.

Arriving at the audio, the 110 inch Samsung Micro LED TV sports ‘Arena Sound’ that can offer a clear and immersive audio experience without the use of an external speaker. It supports 5.1 channel sound paired with OTS Pro technology (Object Tracking Sound), which moves the speaker along with the movement of the subject in front of the TV. It follows a minimalist ‘Monolithic design,’ with negligible bezels on every side of the TV, enabling a full display body on the front.

Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone has been in the news for the fast few months and now it seems that the company is actively working on it. As per the latest information coming through the supply chain, Apple has now received samples for testing.

The company has reportedly partnered with companies like Hon Hai and Shin Nikko for the supply chain for the upcoming foldable iPhone. Through the testing, the Cupertino-based giant is evaluating the use of OLED or Micro LED for the display panel.

Depending on the display panel opted for the device, it will significantly affect the assembly method. While the company has already acquired patents for the foldable iPhone design and is working on the development, it is not expected to go official for two more years.

Earlier, it was reported that Apple had placed a larger order with Samsung Display for providing samples for at least one year. The development came after it was reported that the foldable iPhone is now in the prototype stage.

As per the latest report, Apple is testing key components, including the display and bearings for the foldable design. While Taiwan-based Shin Nikko is the primary supplier for the company, the assemble is expected to be handled by Hon Hai.

The upcoming foldable iPhone is designed in such a way that when opened, it has a single continuous display and doesn’t appear to have two separate display panels, even though that is the case.

A recent report revealed that Apple will be discontinuing the iPad Mini once the foldable iPhone gets launched in the market. The reason is that the product will be a cross between iPad Mini and iPhone and when unfolded, it will be similar to the iPad Mini.

Apple is expected to make a move to Mini-LED displays for its high-end iPad as well as MacBook models. As per the reports, Apple could start adopting this new display technology sometime later this year.

Now, the tech giant has been granted a new patent for Micro-LED display (via Patently Apple) which the company is planning to use for future MacBook, iPads, and a Fitness Band. Earlier this year, Apple was granted a patent for Fitness Band but there’s no confirmation if the company is actually planning to enter that segment.

It seems that the company will first adopt the Mini-LED display and will gradually move towards using Micro-LED display panels on its products. Currently, it is facing some issues and thus, its adoption in the near future seems unlikely.

Recently, it was reported that Apple could be using the MicroLED Display panel for the seventh-generation Apple Watch. Cupertino-based Apple is reportedly investing around $330 million in a Taiwan-based company for Micro LED factory that will manufacture displays for future iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and other devices.

Manufacturers are trying to now adopt Micro LED screens instead of LCD or OLED panels as the new technology promises to be more energy-efficient and the panel is also thinner. It is said that the power consumption of the Micro LED screen is one-tenth compared to LCD.

Micro LED also supports a higher brightness, higher dynamic range, and wider color gamut. It also offers a faster update rate and a wider viewing angle. Given that the technology is still in the development phase, we could see devices with Mini LED display first, which falls between traditional LED and Micro LED technology.
