Apple’s mixed reality headset is making headlines again. Last time we talked about it, we discussed the possibility of the company not being able to use the Vision Pro name in China. Now, the mixed reality headset is making headlines because of its hardware and costs. The headset, which was announced at WWDC 2023, is expected to sell for $3,499. However, it is reportedly only costing Apple $1,519 to make. This is because the company relies on Sony for supplying high-cost micro-OLED panels for the headset, while LG Display provides regular OLED panels for the external display. Here are the details…

Apple Vision Pro to Feature Sony Internal Displays, LG Display External Displays

We all know that the Apple Vision Pro is expected to be expensive. Apple has announced a price of $3,499, but recent leaks have revealed that the actual production cost is less than half of that, at $1,519. Of course, this is just the production cost, and does not include other expenses such as research and development, marketing, and customer support. However, this doesn’t change the fact that even manufacturing this product is expensive. Apparently, one of the major reasons for the high cost is Sony’s latest technology micro-OLED panels.

According to the latest reports, Apple Vision Pro, will have two different types of displays. The internal display will use Sony’s micro-OLED panels, while the external display will use regular LG OLED panels. Micro-OLED panels are considered to be the best type of display for XR headsets, as they offer superior image quality and contrast. However, they are also more expensive than regular OLED panels. As a result, Apple is using Sony’s micro-OLED panels for the internal display.

Sony has been a pioneer in the development of micro-OLED panels. The company first developed micro-OLED panels for use in its PlayStation Vita handheld gaming console in 2011. In recent years, Sony has continued to develop micro-OLED panels for use in a variety of products, including its Xperia smartphones and its Aibo robotic dog.

On the other hand, LG Display is the world’s leading manufacturer of OLED panels. The company has been producing OLED panels for use in TVs, smartphones, and other products for over a decade. LG Display’s OLED panels are known for their high quality and their ability to offer deep blacks and vibrant colors.

Samsung had previously launched the MicroLED TVs, but the main problem with them was their screen sizes and which require a professional to complete their setup. The past generation of MicroLED TVs was costly enough that we can say that it was made only for wealthy people. Anyway, in the CES 2023 event, Samsung announced its Quantum Dot OLED, Neo QLED and MicroLED TV. Well, the newly introduced MicroLED TV solves the problem which was there with its predecessor. It comes in smaller screen sizes and is not going to be as costlier as its predecessor.

According to Samsung, their recently unveiled TV is currently the smallest and most reasonably priced MicroOLED TV on the market. The new models in the 2023 MICRO LED series range in size from 50 to 140 inches, giving customers a wide range of options for a screen experience and visual quality that are unmatched. Due to its modular design, it can be totally customised to meet a customer’s preferred setup because it is not constrained by shape, ratio, or size. Additionally, it comes without bezels, ensuring a seamless transition between the screen and the actual world regardless of setup.

It’s safe to presume the new 76-inch variant will cost many tens of thousands of dollars, at the very least, given that the 110-inch version of it costs a cool $156,000 and is also available in 88- and 99-inch sizes. Apart from the TVs, the brand has introduced many new features for their TizenOS.

Speaking of gamers, Samsung is releasing a new MiniMap Sharing and Virtual Aim Point for its Gambar 3.0. Although it can seem paradoxical because you’d presumably prefer to see your minimap on the screen you’re actually playing on, minimap sharing allows you to share the minimap of the game you’re playing to a secondary display. Anyway, there is no information on the pricing and availability of the device yet. Also, it is surely going to cost less than its predecessor but it will still be out of budget for many peoples.

This will be used to support Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality viewing.

For those who are unaware, BOE has been developing MicroOLED panels since 2018 through Kunming BOE Display Technology, which is a joint venture with Yunnan province.

MicroOLED attaches OLED panels on a silicon wafer instead of a glass substrate, allowing it to realize super high resolution. While the OLED panel pixel sizes in smartphones and TVs are around 40-300 micrometers, MicroOLED panel pixel size is a tenth of this at around 4-20 micrometers. Also, it is ideal for AR and VR use-case because of its response time.

Sunic Systems, a South Korea-based company has supplied BOE with deposition equipment for the manufacturing of MicroOLED panels, and last year, the company had signed a deal worth $225 million for the same.

Apart from BOE, LG Display is also working on this new type of panels aims at AR/VR devices. Samsung Display, one of the leading in the world, has not yet unveiled any of the MicroOLED products so far.

Recently, a report claimed that Apple is planning on developing ultra-advanced MicroOLED display technology at a secret facility in Taiwan in partnership with TSMC. This will be used in the company’s upcoming AR/VR device, development of which is being headed by former hardware engineering chief Dan Riccio.

According to an AsiaNikkei report, the Cupertino based giant is partnering with the world’s largest contract chip maker to develop new micro OLED displays. For those unaware, this is a new type of display built directly onto chip wafers. The primary application for this new breed of displays is for upcoming augmented reality devices from Apple, as per sources close to the matter.

The company is collaborating with its known chip supplier since micro OLED displays are not built on glass substrates like conventional LCD panels found in smartphones and TVs, or even OLED displays used in premium grade flagship handsets. Rather, the new displays are built directly onto the wafers, or the substrates that semiconductors are fabricated on. This essentially allows these panels to be slimmer and small while also consuming less power, which in turn makes it great for AR device applications, as per the source.

Furthermore, this also marks the growing relationship between Apple and TSMC, which is also the sole supplier of the former’s iPhone processors. At the moment, the micro OLED project is at the trial production stage and it will still take several years to reach mass production. The displays that are currently under development are less than an inch in size. The source added that “Panel players are good at making screens bigger and bigger, but when it comes to thin and light devices like AR glasses, you need a very small screen.”

Apple has even hired dozens of veterans from Taiwanese display maker AU Optoelectronics to help with its micro OLED project. These new employees are apparently also made to sign a strict non disclosure agreement that forbids them from even meeting friends or acquaintances working in the tech industry, as per the source. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report so take it with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

According to a recent report by the Photonics Industry Technology Development Association (PIDA), worldwide purchases of OLED panels have increase. The association which is a nonprofit organization gathering technology and market analysis worldwide for Taiwanese optoelectronic industries, also projected that the market share in high-end televisions is expected to reach 68% in 2020.

This is an indication that OLED panels are gradually replacing all other types of display panels on modern television display. A report by South Korea-based UBI Resear reveals that last year alone, international vendors shipped approximately 260 million OLED panels estimated to be worth $11.7 billion USD. That figure is expected to peak at 370 million units by the end of this year, 2016 thus taking the industry’s value to $16. billion. That figure could rise to 1.25 billion units valued at $61.4 billion by 2020.

PIDA also highlighted the fact that three notable advancements in OLED displays, namely Micro LEDs, Quantum Dot LEDs and printing displays (flexible OLED panels) are currently being used by leading international vendors along side OLEDs. All three are recent technologies but are gradually finding their way into devices. LG is reported to have started supplying flexible OLEDs panels while Micro LED could be used by Apple in its iPhones in the near future.
