<p>Apple is an independent company that designs almost all the parts used in its devices. This gives them a distinct advantage over their competitors. Apple does not manufacture its own parts, but instead collaborates with specialist firms such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/TSMC/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TSMC</a>. These manufacturers are eager to work with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/Apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>, and in return, Apple gains control over the supply chain. </p>

<p>However, Apple is not as independent when it comes to displays. The company collaborate with giants such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/02/07/samsung-lg-preparing-next-gen-ipad-pro-oled-display/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung and LG Display</a> in this area. In an effort to gain greater control over its display supply and reduce its dependency on partners like Samsung, Apple is reportedly making substantial investments in microLED technology. Here are the details..</p>

<h2><strong>Apple Invests $1 Billion in MicroLED Technology to Revolutionize Displays</strong></h2>

<p>As you know, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/MicroLEd/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MicroLED</a> is a relatively new display technology that has the potential to be better than both LCD and OLED displays. It is self-emissive, meaning it does not require a backlight, which results in deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios, and better power efficiency. MicroLED displays are also very durable and can be made in a wide range of sizes. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="426" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-1024x426.jpeg?x10805" alt="" class="wp-image-538270" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-1024x426.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-300x125.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-768x319.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-1536x638.jpeg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-696x289.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-1068x444.jpeg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1-1011x420.jpeg 1011w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/apple-billion-dollar-microled-invesment-1.jpeg 1600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Aware of the situation, Apple is working on developing microLED displays for its products, and invested more than $1 billion in research and development. The company is said to be building its own microLED manufacturing facilities, which could help it to bring microLED displays to market more quickly and at a lower cost. However, Apple is facing challenges in mass-producing, but it is committed to bringing the technology to market.</p>

<p>It is still too early to say when Apple will launch its first microLED product, but the company is clearly committed to the technology. If microLED displays can live up to their potential, they could revolutionize the display industry and help Apple to maintain its position as a leader in the mobile market. </p>

<p>Apple is working on making its own displays, which could mean that<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/26/apple-microled-display-samsung-lg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Samsung and LG will no longer be able to</a> <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2023/04/26/apple-microled-display-samsung-lg/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">make money from every Apple</a> product sold. In 2021, Samsung earned $10.3 billion from Apple, while LG earned $3.6 billion. If Apple is successful in making its own displays, these two companies could lose a significant amount of revenue.</p>

When charging premium pricing, the company has to offer premium features, and keeping that in mind, Apple is planning to adopt the new MicroLED display panels for the smartwatch.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20200810PD204.html">new report from DigiTimes</a>, Apple could be using the MicroLED Display panel for the seventh-generation Apple Watch. However, the upcoming Apple Watch, the sixth-generation model, will continue to have an <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/oled">OLED</a> panel.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-275523 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/apple-watch-feature.png?x10805" alt="Apple Watch Series 5" width="759" height="451" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/apple-watch-feature.png 759w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/apple-watch-feature-300x178.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/apple-watch-feature-696x414.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/apple-watch-feature-707x420.png 707w" sizes="(max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px" /></p>
<p>It is being reported that Apple is investing around $330 million in Taiwan-based company for <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/microled">MicroLED</a> factory that will manufacture displays for future <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/iphone">iPhones</a>, iPads, MacBooks, and other devices from Apple.</p>
<p>As per the report, Taiwan-based LCD panel maker AU Optronics is the supplier for the glass substrates for MicroLEDs sized 20-50 microns. On the other hand, Epistar is focusing on improving yield rates and reducing costs for mass transfer.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">EDITOR&#8217;S PICK:</span> </strong><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/10/apple-removing-wechat-from-app-store-iphone-fall-by-30-in-china/"><strong>Apple removing WeChat from App Store may have iPhone shipments fall by 30% in China: Kuo</strong></a></p>
<p>Manufacturers are trying to now adopt MicroLED screens instead of LCD or OLED panels as the new technology promises to be more energy-efficient and the panel is also thinner. It is said that the power consumption of the MicroLED screen is one-tenth compared to <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/lcd">LCD</a>.</p>
<p>Further, MicroLED also supports a higher brightness, higher dynamic range, and wider color gamut. It also offers a faster update rate and a wider viewing angle. Given that the technology is still in the development phase, we could see devices with Mini-LED display first, which falls between traditional LED and MicroLED technology.</p>
<p>As previously reported, Apple is <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/04/apple-mini-led-ipad-mini-launch-this-year/">soon going to launch</a> six products with Mini-LED display, including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, a 16-inch ‌‌‌‌MacBook Pro‌‌‌‌, a 10.2.-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch ‌‌‌‌iPad‌‌‌‌ mini.</p>

LG has also applied for trademarks in the EU that point at MicroLED displays for smartphones. What is the connection between both developments?</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_181203" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-181203" style="width: 1000px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-181203" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/MicroLEDs.jpg?x10805" alt="MicroLED Display" width="1000" height="667" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/MicroLEDs.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/MicroLEDs-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/MicroLEDs-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-181203" class="wp-caption-text">Image of a MicroLED display (Image Source: The Verge)</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>Before diving in, let&#8217;s take a quick lesson on MicroLED displays. MicroLED displays are like OLED displays as they do not require a backlight but emit their own light. However, the individual pixels are much more tiny and use organic compounds different from the one used by OLED displays. So with MicroLEDs, we should get a better and brighter display but at a cheaper price and with a thinner profile.</p>
<p>LG&#8217;s trademark listings are for the words XµLED, SµLED, and XLµLED. As we all know the symbol µ stands for micro. We presume the X, S, and XL indicate the sizes of the displays. Smartphones are not the only devices LG intends to use the trademarks for even though they are primarily for them. It also added wearables, tablets, laptops, and VR glasses to the list.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-181202" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/LG-MicroLED-Trademarks.jpg?x10805" alt="LG MicroLED Trademarks" width="728" height="100" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/LG-MicroLED-Trademarks.jpg 728w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/LG-MicroLED-Trademarks-300x41.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px" /></p>
<p>The link between Apple and LG is this &#8211; since Apple is working on its own display, there is a chance that it it will be mass producing them itself when it decides to go mainstream. The location where it is developing the displays is a 62,000 square foot facility in Santa Clara, California.</p>
<p>Samsung Display and LG Display are suppliers of screens used in iPhone X and Apple Watch respectively. Lately, Apple has been cutting ties with some of its suppliers to do its own thing, if it succeeds with the MicroLED displays, we may see it cut ties with the two Korean giants too.</p>
<p>But reports say Apple is only developing its MicroLED displays for use in its watches. It is even said that the Series 3 watch should actually have come with a MicroLED display. With LG already developing for smartphones, it may get the contract to supply for future iPhones.</p>
