The Galaxy S26 series is at the centre of a developing supply situation that has drawn attention across the industry. A report from South Korea has revealed that Samsung is preparing for high-level discussions with Micron as it aims to secure stable mobile DRAM for its upcoming flagship. With the smartphone’s launch window nearing, rising memory prices and unsettled contracts have triggered a series of urgent developments that set the tone for what follows.

Samsung seeks emergency talks at CES 2026

TM Roh

TM Roh, who heads Samsung’s DX division, is reportedly scheduled to meet Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra on the opening day of CES 2026 in Las Vegas. Such meetings are rarely arranged during the event, but the growing strain on LPDDR5X supply appears to have made this one unavoidable.

Industry insiders say the price surge has been unusually steep. LPDDR5X 12GB modules that were trading at around 30 dollars earlier this year have reportedly jumped to nearly 70 dollars by late November, creating uncertainty in Samsung’s negotiations with both its DS division and Micro. The two suppliers have yet to finalize terms for the Galaxy S26, leaving the smartphone unit under pressure as it approaches mass production deadlines.

Several Korean reports note that memory manufacturers prefer quarterly supply agreements during price upswings rather than longer commitments. This has added another layer of difficulty for Samsung’s mobile division, which is already dealing with increased expenditure on application processors. The situation has elevated Micron’s importance in Samsung’s flagship portfolio, especially after the company supplied a large share of mobile DRAM for the Galaxy S25 series.

New DRAM technologies and internal challenges

Samsung’s DS unit is simultaneously advancing its next-generation LPDDR6 technology, expected to offer higher bandwidth and improved efficiency. Early signs suggest the company may showcase it at CES 2026, although commercial deployment could arrive later. Meanwhile, internal adoption of the Exynos 2600 remains limited, further tightening the mobile division’s budget as it negotiates memory procurement.

With the Galaxy S26 set to debut in early 2026, the outcome of TM Roh’s CES meeting may influence how smoothly Samsung can secure DRAM supply for its next flagship. While the company has declined to comment on its memory plans, the urgency around negotiations underscores the broader industry pressure caused by rising demand and limited production capacity.

Micron is taking a leap forward in data center memory solutions, becoming the first manufacturer to deliver high-end DDR5 RDIMM memory specifically designed for AI applications. This cutting-edge memory boasts impressive operating speeds of up to 8000 MT/s.

Micron claims that the new DDR5 memory brings a 28% improvement in AI training

Micron’s press release highlights their achievement: verifying and delivering high-capacity 128GB DDR5 RDIMM memory built with single-chip 32GB DRAM chips and reaching speeds of 5600 MT/s. This marks an industry-leading position for Micron.

The secret behind this innovation lies in Micron’s 1β (1-beta) technology, which equips the 128GB DDR5 RDIMM memory with significant advantages. Compared to traditional 3DS through-silicon via (TSV) products, Micron’s solution offers a remarkable increase in bit density (over 45%), improved energy efficiency (by 22%), and reduced latency (by 16%).

Micron emphasizes the performance benefits of their high-capacity DDR5 memory in AI training, claiming up to a 28% improvement. This enhanced memory is ideal for tackling memory-intensive workloads in AI generation, in-memory databases, and real-time data analysis. Additionally, the swift response times accelerate AI inference capabilities.

Expected to be in production by the first half of 2024, it is positioned as the first disruptive form factor for client PCs since the introduction of small outline dual inline memory modules (SODIMMs) in 1997.

Micron’s LPCAMM2 integrates LPDDR5X DRAM, offering up to 61% lower power consumption and up to 71% better performance for essential workloads, such as web browsing and video conferencing. Additionally, it provides a remarkable 64% space savings compared to SODIMM offerings. As generative artificial intelligence (GAI) becomes more prevalent on client PCs, the LPCAMM2 is designed to deliver the necessary performance for processing Artificial Intelligence workloads while maintaining low power consumption.

Praveen Vaidyanathan, Vice President and General Manager of Micron’s Compute Products Group, emphasizes the transformative nature of the LPCAMM2, stating that it will deliver best-in-class performance per watt in a flexible, modular form factor. The new product is expected to enhance the capabilities of AI-enabled laptops and allows for memory capacity upgrades as technology and user needs evolve.

LPCAMM2’s development involved collaboration with key client PC OEMs and ecosystem enablers, and it represents a significant departure from current memory module form factors. The new memory solution offers higher performance with LPDDR5X, achieving speeds of up to 9600Mbps, an 80% reduction in system standby power for improved battery life, and benefits in digital content creation and productivity workloads.

Moreover, the LPCAMM2 boasts modularity, enabling critical serviceability functionality for enterprise IT users and administrators. It features a single PCB for all module capacities, providing supply chain flexibility for OEM and ODM customers. Compared to SODIMMs, LPCAMM2 simplifies motherboard routing complexity.

Crucial LPCAMM2 retail products will be made available, allowing laptop users, including gamers and content creators, to upgrade their system memory configuration, marking an industry first for low-power memory. The Crucial LPCAMM2 products are set to be available in the first half of 2024.

Micron‘s latest offering, the 3500 SSD, is turning heads in the tech community, and for good reason. Launched in December 2023, this SSD is not just another storage device; it’s a game-changer in how we think about data storage and performance.

The real-world testing speeds for the SSDs are defying expectations

What sets the Micron 3500 apart? For starters, it’s built with a 232-layer NAND, a significant leap in SSD technology. This allows for higher storage capacities, with options ranging from 512GB to 2TB. But it’s not just about size; the performance is where the Micron 3500 really shines. Equipped with a Phison E25 controller, also found in the Crucial T500 SSD, the Micron 3500 boasts impressive speeds. Users can expect sequential reads and writes up to 7,000 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. These aren’t just manufacturer claims; they’re backed by real-world testing.

The most impressive aspect of the Micron 3500, however, is its four-channel PICe Gen4 connectivity. This feature allows the SSD to perform remarkably well, even when compared to eight-channel alternatives. It’s this efficiency and power that have earned the Micron 3500 glowing reviews and accolades, including a perfect score from TweakTown and the Editor’s Choice Award.

The SSD isn’t just for show; it’s built for performance across various applications, from computing to gaming. It stands out in the OEM market, designed to be integrated into hardware units like high-end PCs and workstations. The Micron 3500 doesn’t lag behind its retail counterpart, the Crucial T500, in performance. In fact, it matches or surpasses it in most benchmarks, a rare feat for an OEM SSD.

The landscape of the global semiconductor industry is seeing a mix of competition and cooperation, as illustrated by the recent China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai. Amid a backdrop of heightened chip rivalry and trade tensions, particularly between the U.S. and China, this expo has become a hotspot for demonstrating commitment and technological prowess.

China’s government is pushing hard for chip self-sufficiency

At the CIIE, heavyweights like Micron, ASML, and Samsung have marked their territory, showcasing their latest advancements and securing their foothold in the Chinese market. These displays come at a time when the Chinese government is pushing hard for chip self-sufficiency, a move prompted by international trade challenges.

Interestingly, while some like Micron and Samsung are making bold appearances despite facing sales bans and restrictions, others like Nvidia have opted out, maintaining a conspicuous absence. This reflects a strategic dance where companies must balance their global market aspirations with the regulatory tightrope of international trade policies.

Micron’s presence, in particular, signals a possible thawing of tensions with Beijing, as the company deployed a significant team to the expo despite past security review setbacks. This points to the intricate relationship businesses have with politics, where economic interests often lead to softened stances and renewed dialogue.

ASML and Samsung also used the expo to assert their influence and technological edge. Samsung’s introduction of its advanced 3-nanometre chip technology contrasts with its China-based plants’ focus on more mature-node chips, highlighting the complex interplay between innovation and production strategies.

AMD‘s focus on AI solutions and its declaration of AI as a strategic priority showcases the industry’s pivot towards future technologies. However, the absence of companies like Nvidia underlines the reality that the tech industry’s future is not just about innovation but also about navigating the geopolitical chessboard.

Micron Technology, a major US chip manufacturer, is ramping up its efforts to expand its business within the Asian giant’s borders. CEO Sanjay Mehrotra is taking the helm, steering the company through China’s regulations and expressing his willingness to invest in the market. This strategic pivot comes on the heels of Micron’s prior entanglement with a sales ban imposed by Beijing—a move that threatened to slice a significant chunk from its revenue pie.

The renewed friendship was brought up during Sanjay’s meeting with Wang

The renewed camaraderie was highlighted during Mehrotra’s meeting with China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, where it was made clear that Micron’s growth in China hinged on its adherence to local laws. The dialogue is a smaller part of a wider breakdown in Sino-American business relations, as both superpowers seem eager to smooth out recent wrinkles ahead of a key presidential summit in San Francisco.

Wang’s words to Micron were welcoming yet firm, emphasizing China’s intention to better its investment landscape for foreign players, while also urging the chipmaker to deepen its roots in Chinese soil. This shift towards a more cordial approach coincides with Micron’s decision to engage with the 6th China International Import Expo—an event China uses to charm international investors.

The change in atmosphere is stark compared to half a year ago when China’s cybersecurity terms struck Micron with a sales prohibition, a decision that posed a risk to Micron’s China-based revenue. While there’s no word if this visit included talks with cyber authorities, the significance of Mehrotra’s discussions on the company’s plans, especially concerning its Xi’an plant, cannot be overstated.

Earlier today (3rd May 2023), Micron finally made its Crucial T700 SSD available for purchase. The new SSD features some notable specifications and cutting edge technology. So here are all the details.

Micron Crucial T700 series can hit up to 12GB/s in read speeds

For those unaware, the company’s SSD storage module was announced earlier this year and has finally gone on sale in the market. The brand’s latest product is the T700 model, which is based on the PCIe Gen 5 standard and the NVMe format. Previously, the T700 was available for pre-orders, but is now available for direct purchase. One of its highlighting aspects its undoubtedly its extremely fast read and write speeds.

As per official notes, the Crucial T700 SSD offers up to a whopping 12.4GB/s read and 11.8GB/s write speeds. This is noticeably faster than the current market standard with SSD’s reaching just 10GB/s in read speeds. The T700 PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSD is available in multiple storage capacities, including a 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB variant. Furthermore, the company is also offering an additional heatsink that you can buy separately for 30 US Dollars.

The additional heatsink would help keep the temperature low to avoid overheating. Micron has launched the Crucial T700 series SSD with a starting price tag of 180 US Dollars. On the other hand, the 2TB model csots 340 US Dollars, while the 4TB model is available for a whopping 600 US Dollars.

Micron, a leading supplier of memory and storage solutions, recently introduced new DDR5 memory modules in 24GB and 48GB capacities. The modules are compatible with AMD EXPO and Intel XMP 3.0 profiles, making them easy to set up and use with desktop PCs running the AMD Ryzen 7000 series And Intel 12th and 13th Gen Core processors.

Micron’s new DDR5 memory modules feature 5200 MT/s and 5600 MT/s data transfer rates and CL46 latency at 1.1V. DDR5-5600 DIMMs come in traditional 8GB, 16GB and 32GB versions, but the new 24GB and 48GB models stand out because they’re based on 24Gb memory chips, while traditional Dimensions may use 16Gb DRAM ICs. Meanwhile, DDR5-5200 modules are only available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB sizes.

The 24GB and 48GB capacities are ideal for next-generation server platforms because they allow systems to balance memory capacity and core count, reducing cost. Additionally, AMD EXPO and Intel XMP 3.0 profiles, designed primarily for enthusiasts, are supported, suggesting that these Modules are for the desktop.

Using a few 24GB or two 48GB modules instead of a pair of 32GB and 64GB DIMMs allows you to build a PC with 48GB or 96GB of dual-channel memory, which is less expensive than a machine with 64GB or 128GB of RAM. Meanwhile, capacities like 48GB and 96GB are more suitable for modern CPUs with 16 or 24 cores – For example, if you’re doing a virtual machine, you might get 2GB or 3GB per core.

Micron has not revealed suggested prices for its DDR5-5200 and DDR5-5600 modules. However, given the expected low PC demand in Q1 and the expected 18-23% drop in DDR5 SDRAM prices in Q1 2023, new memory modules are expected to be relatively cheap, although Their high capacity and higher performance.

The company has just announced the world’s highest capacity microSD card, which features a whopping 1.5TB of storage. This is made possible through the brand’s new i400 microSD card that has a maximum storage capacity of up to 1.5TB, which is a massive amount of additional storage for electronic devices that support memory expansion via a microSD card slot.

Although, its still unfortunate that most modern smartphones do not support this technology, there are a number of other applications still. Micron managed to achieve record breaking capacity by using 176 layer 3D NAND technology, which is also the same tech that is used in SSDs. In other words, it basically means that memory cells are stacked on top of one another in a 3D pattern.

i400 is offered in different storage capacities as well

However, this also implies that the new memory card will likely have a rather premium price tag in the beginning, which is typically true for most new technologies that break records. But, this also means that the previous gen 1TB models will soon become more affordable as well.

As per the report(via Digitimes), Anand Ramamoorthy, Managing Director of Micron Technology (India), says the company will increase headcount. Precisely, it will recruit about 3,600 more employees. This would bring the final tally to 5,000 employees by 2023. He says that the company has rapidly expanded by tripling the headcount in the last 12 months.

For the unware, Micron Technology is a US-based memory chip maker. Its portfolio of products includes computer memory, computer data storage, dynamic RAM(DRAM), flash memory(NAND flash), and USB flash drives. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, the company has expertise in SSD, graphics memory, and LPDDR5 DRAM for 4G and 5G smartphones.

EDITOR’S PICK: Micron has yet to receive a license to sell to Huawei, may lead to fall in sales

As for India, the company, in 2018, allocated $3 billion for investment in Hyderabad. Moreover, it’s expanded a lot in the Asian region as well. In fact, it has back-end fabs in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and China. In case you don’t know, back end of line (BEOL) is where individual parts mingle with the wiring on the wafer.

Micron is very positive about growing electronics manufacturing industry in India and is considering increasing its presence in India. Micron has agreed to set up a Center of Excellence in memory and storage systems in India with Govt. of India.

However, the company reportedly is far away from setting up a production line in India. Although things are looking good for the country in the distant future, it isn’t going to make haste decisions regarding this right now. Still, the company is ready for academic tie-ups in the country.

Ramamoorthy says that Micron has authorized its University Research Alliance of Micron (URAM) to facilitate industry-academia collaboration for research and innovation in memory design. According to the Indian Minister of Electronics & IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Micron has also agreed set up a center of Excellence in memory and storage systems with Govt. of India.

According to a Reuters report, Micron had previously obtained the license to supply the Chinese tech giant with memory chips for its smartphones and servers from its factories outside of the United States. For those unaware, companies are required to gain a special license from the US government, after the smartphone maker was put in the “Entity List” by the US Commerce Department, and faced an export ban.

In other words, this has caused a complete halt in shipments from Micron to Huawei. The latter accounted for about 600 million US Dollars out of the former’s 6.06 billion US Dollars in sales for the fiscal fourth quarter that ended on 3rd September 2020, meaning about 10 percent of its total sales.

According to Sumit Sadana, Micron Chief business officer, “The manufacturing equipment in those fabs are obviously from U.S.-based companies,” which is why the shipments have stopped altogether. The senior official also added that “As soon as we get the license, we would work with Huawei to determine how we can resurrect the business.” So, if a license isn’t acquired, Micron stands to lose out on a notable part of its business due to recent sanctions.

This morning, Micron Technology announced that it has commenced the mass production of the world’s first low-power LPDDR5 DRAM chip designed for high-end smartphone market. It is now confirmed that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 series will be the first phones to feature it. The Mi 10 may become the first smartphone to arrive with the latest LPDDR5 RAM technology. However, there is a possibility that Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series could beat the company in using this new-age RAM.

Micron’s LDDR5 make use of industry leading packaging technology for its 12 GB RAM. The low power DDR5 offers a transmission rate of up to 6.4Gbps. In terms of speed, it is twice as fast as LPDDR4 and 20 percent faster than LPDDR4x RAM. The data access speed has been upped by 50 percent on the LPDDR5.

Compared to the previous generation, it consumes 20 percent less power. According to Micron Technology, just because LPDDR5 is faster, the app processing and operation speed also becomes fast. Hence, devices equipped with LPDDR can help in extending the battery life by 5 to 10 percent.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi continued dominance of Indian smartphone market in Q4 2019: Canalys

When it comes to performance, Micron Technology said that the predecessor LPDDR4 RAM can be used for 4K, 8K applications, and image editing. However, it does not work well with AR games, 100-megapixel images, and high-performance video editing. These advantages are available with LPDDR5. Also, if LPDDR4 runs 100 apps simultaneously, a bottleneck may appear. LPDDR5 devices will not encounter such an issue, claims the company.

LPDDR5 can provide the required speed and capacity for AI engine that is built directly inside the mobile device processor. These CPUs rely on the data transfer of Micron’s built-in LPDDR5 memory to support machine learning capabilities. Phones equipped with 8 GB and 12 GB RAM LDDR5 RAM are expected to release in the first half of the year. Companies are expected to release phones with 16 GB in the second half of the year.

Micron Technology confirmed that the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 will be the first smartphone to come equipped with LPDDR5 memory. Xiaomi Group VP Chang Cheng said, “We value Micron’s long-standing leadership and innovation capabilities in the memory field. Micron’s LPDDR5 DRAM memory has market-leading performance and brings lower power consumption to Xiaomi 10 smartphones. It also ensures better performance and stability. We believe that LPDDR5 will be standard on flagship phones in 2020.” Xiaomi is yet to confirm the launch for the Mi 10 series. It is speculated that the Chinese firm will unveil it in the coming week.

The primary reasons for its projected recovery in the arriving year are due to the company receiving all requested licenses to supply its products to its biggest client, Huawei.

Micron was facing stagnancy in its growth in the memory market from the beginning of the year. However, the main blow arrived when its largest customer got placed on the Entity List. Huawei, the smartphone manufacturer, was banned from the US Commerce Department in early 2019 which had led many US based companies to cut their business ties with it.

Micro’s Memory Chips

A few of those include Google with its Android OS platform, ARM with its chipset architecture and even Micron Technology for its memory-based chips. Initially, when the US Government imposed the ban on Huawei, many American companies had also been against the move since they had heavily relied on the Chinese tech giant.

Editor’s Pick: Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition is available with 600 yuan discount in China

Since Huawei is also one of the leading telecom companies that supply advanced 5G networking infrastructure; a few of the local telecom companies also suffered when the ban was imposed. All of this points to a domino effect that spans multiple corporations if a key player in the market gets affected.

Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of Micron Technology Inc

According to the Chief Executive of Micron, Sanjay Mehrotra, the company is expecting business to recover by the third quarter of 2020. The recovery is made possible by the licenses to work with Huawei being granted after the declining performance in Q2 2019. In June, Micron had also stated that it could legally ship some of its products to Huawei even during the ban was enforced. Although whether the company received the license when the US Government began granting them in November is still unknown.

US chipmaker, Micron is said to be one of the top firms that have begun shipping goods to Huawei.

The chip manufacturer is able to do this without breaking any law thanks to the ban which sanctions only goods that contain 25% or more of components or materials sourced from the US. It also doesn’t affect goods that are not manufactured in the US or those not labeled as “Made in the US”.

Intel and some other market leaders have also been reported to have resumed shipping products to Huawei.

Mr. Sanjay Mehrotra who is the top official at Micron warned investors that there is “ongoing uncertainty” with respect to Huawei’s predicament, so they can’t “predict the volumes or duration” they will be able to continue shipping products to Huawei.

He added that the Huawei ban cost the company 200 million dollars in revenue for its fiscal third quarter which ended on May 30 as the Chinese giant is its biggest client. The ban is expected to affect over a thousand American companies too.

Micron’s shares rose by as much as 13.8% today following the news that it has resumed shipping to Huawei.

The Huawei-US saga is still on and is part of a trade war between the US and the Chinese governments.
