Microsoft is apparently looking to rival Google and Apple in the mobile application ecosystem market. The company is working on its very own mobile app store that will take on the Apple and Google’s dominance.

Phil Spencer, the head of the American tech giant told Financial Times that the DMA (European Union’s Digital Markets Act) will help the brand in building and launching its mobile application store. For those unaware, the new act will come into effect in 2024. under this law, Apple and Google will now be required to allow users to download and run third party digital contents on their devices, which are outside of their respective app stores.

The senior executive added that “We want to be able to offer Xbox and content from ours and our third party partners on any screen anyone wants to play. Today we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to build the ecosystem that we believe will happen when those devices become open.” Interestingly enough, the company has recently acquired a number of game studios. In other words, its new acquisitions of known names like Activision Blizzard and the move of entering the mobile app store market clearly signals an expansion into this segment.

Thanks to the great success of Activision’s mobile titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Candy Crush Saga, we can expect this new Microsoft app store to see a great start. These two names alone are some of the biggest games in Google’s and Apple’s stores, so Microsoft will undoubtedly leverage their success for its own app store.
