Now that the Mobile OS is dead and Microsoft announced that there will be no more feature updates and no more builds for Insiders, the desire to install the desktop operating system is even stronger for those who still own a Windows mobile handset.

https://twitter.com/Blaze_CW/status/953968476867256320?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmspoweruser.com%2Flatest-development-hacker-boots-windows-10-arm-lumia-950%2F

A hacker who is identified on Twitter with the nickname Blaze_CW has just installed the recently announced Windows 10 for ARM on a Microsoft Lumia 950: now, he can enjoy a full desktop experience on his almost obsolete mobile device. This has made people hopeful for the old Microsoft Lumia devices in becoming useful again. Unfortunately, at this moment we do not know whether the operating system ported on the Lumia 950 is usable or whether it is too unstable. The version of the OS installed on the Lumia 950 is Windows 10.0.16299.15 for ARM.

Some are already speculating that, maybe, when Microsoft will launch Windows Core OS, Lumia devices will be given new life with a brand new and useful operating system. At this moment the Windows 10 Mobile situation is critical: with no updates and with developers losing interest for an abandoned platform, it can be defined a dead operating system.

Looks like HMD has mooted the idea of borrowing some features from the defunct Nokia Lumia phones. One of such features which would be included in future Nokia phones is the Lumia Camera UI. The inclusion of the camera UI was disclosed by Nokia’s Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas who hinted at the development on Twitter.

A recent report had revealed that Microsoft transferred about 500 Nokia patents to HMD Global and the Lumia Camera UI was one of such patent revealed via the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Microsoft acquired Nokia’s devices business for $7.2 billion in 2013. By then, Nokia was already swimming in troubled waters, facing financial difficulties as a result of a late transition to Android phones. Although Microsoft had hoped to turn around the fortunes of the company, that didn’t happen as the Lumia brand just refused to fly. Microsoft had to let go of the excess luggage the Nokia brand had turned into and in came HMD Global Oy, a Finnish phone maker.

The Lumia Camera UI is reputed to be one of the most intuitive camera app around. It debuted on the Nokia Lumia 1020 back in July 2013 and has a bunch of manual controls to enhance image results. It included adjustments such as shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, night and sports and white balance among various others. These key advancements would give a competitive edge especially to the Nokia 8 that has a dual-camera setup with Carl Zeiss optics. No word yet as to when the rollout of the UI on Nokia phones would commence.

Microsoft China recently posted a series of videos on video sharing website Bilibili in China which individually showcases the entire Lumia lineup. The videos contain promotional teasers for a long lineup of Microsoft Lumia phones in the Lumia series. From the videos, the Nokia 650 is likely the last Lumia smartphone Microsoft will be selling. Recall that there are rumours Microsoft is killing the Lumia line in favour of a new Surface phone brand. The post accompanying the videos reveals that the videos are to commemorate the classic series which the company began in 2011. In addition, it reveals categorically that the Lumia series have been shelved.

While we are not sure of the emergence of a new Surface phone brand from Microsoft, the post contains the rider “let’s look forward”. This could be a reference to a new product line which could possibly be the Surface phone, just when we though Windows 10 devices are dead and buried. So, while the Lumia brand may be dead, that doesn’t mean Windows mobile is dead. We may likely be seeing the re-emergence of Windows mobile phones soon, not so soon anyway. A recent report has suggested that the company has postponed the launch of the Surface Phone to 2018.

Apparently, in a clear demonstration of the return of the Nokia brand and the demise of the Microsoft Lumia brand, the official Microsoft Lumia Weibo page is reported to have been renamed as Nokia phones.

This is no doubt an indication that the Nokia brand has been repositioned to take over all the structures of the now defunct Microsoft Lumia globally. On September 2, 2013, Microsoft announced that it was buying out Nokia’s devices business for $7.2 billion. By then, Nokia was already swimming in troubled waters, facing financial difficulties as a result of a late transition to Android phones. Although Microsoft had hoped to turn around the fortunes of the company, that didn’t happen as the Lumia brand just refused to fly.

In a bid to offload its excess luggage, Microsoft announced that it is selling off its feature phone assets to a subsidiary of Taiwanese firm Foxconn Technology and newly-established firm HMD Global for $350 million, around May last year. This move marked the return of the Nokia brand into the market. Already, the company has released a couple of feature phones and is all set to unveil its Android smartphones.

Although the Weibo page’s name has now been changed to reflect the new ownership, it can still be observed that the background image is still that of Microsoft Lumia. Perhaps this is to allow for a slow transition, so as not to confuse fans. Perhaps, some more changes and maybe a couple of announcement will pop up from the new account soon. We’ll be on the watch out for that.
