Microsoft has introduced two new additions to its Surface Copilot+ range—the Surface Laptop 13-inch and the Surface Pro 12-inch. Revealed through Microsoft’s official channels and Qualcomm’s announcement, these devices are powered by the Snapdragon X Plus chip and bring AI-powered enhancements to Windows 11. With a blend of portability, performance, and refreshed design choices, the two new machines aim to cater to everyday users and professionals alike.

Surface Laptop 13-inch specifications

The 13-inch Surface Laptop sticks to the conventional clamshell format but upgrades the internal hardware significantly. It features a 13-inch PixelSense display with a 1920×1280 resolution, 16GB LPDDR5x RAM, and storage options up to 512GB.

Powered by an 8-core Snapdragon X Plus processor, the device is engineered to offer a seamless AI experience while delivering an impressive battery life of up to 23 hours of video playback or 16 hours of web usage. Microsoft also notes the inclusion of removable storage, enhancing future-proofing.

Surface Pro 12-inch specifications

Marking the return of smaller, powerful PCs, the Surface Pro 12-inch combines a tablet-first approach with essential computing capabilities. The 12-inch PixelSense LCD supports a 90Hz refresh rate and features a resolution of 2196 x 1464 pixels.

It shares the same processor and RAM as the Surface Laptop but includes a redesigned keyboard (sold separately for Rs 12,500 approx) and a magnetic pen attachment. The fanless body and Snapdragon platform help ensure smooth performance and up to 12 hours of battery life during regular web use.

Price and availability

Both the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are up for pre-order in India and will be available starting July 15, 2025. Though local pricing is yet to be revealed. In the US, the Surface Pro 12 is priced at $799, while the Surface Laptop 13 starts at $899.

With the right-to-repair movement gaining popularity in the US, the companies might have begun to see the writing on the wall as tech giant Microsoft has made the first move to bring its customers more repairability options with their partnership with iFixit.

Earlier today, iFixit announced its partnership with Microsoft to produce and sell Microsoft-designed tools to repair their Surface laptops. For those unaware, iFixit is an American e-commerce and how-to website which sells repair parts and publishes free online repair guides for consumer electronics and gadgets.

The move garners a positive reception by Microsoft’s Surface customers as it provides them with more repairability options and convenience for a device that has been considered rather difficult to repair.

But you can’t go DIY on your Surface Laptops yet as the parts are only being sold to select partners under the free-of-cost iFixit Pro program, including independent repairers, Microsoft Authorized Service Providers, Microsoft Experience Centers, and Microsoft Commercial customers. iFixit has not given any timeline as to when the tools will be available for sale to the general public, but they hope it will happen sooner rather than later.

iFixit explained that the program is launching with three tools, namely the Surface Display Bonding Frame, Surface Battery Cover, Surface Display Debonding Tools, as well as weights and accessories, all designed by Microsoft and manufactured by iFixit. The tools will enable precision debonding and rebonding of adhesive for select Microsoft Surface models and will undergo the same rigorous quality testing and attention to detail that they give to all of our products.

These tools are, unfortunately, only for newer Surface devices like the Surface Laptop 3 (2019) and newer, the Surface Pro X (2019), the business / education-oriented Surface Pro 7 plus (2021), and Surface Pro 8 (2021), but its a start and we can hope that more support will be offered down the line for a wider range of devices.

After announcing the launch date for the next generation of Windows, Microsoft has added more to the streak by confirming that new Surface devices will also be finding their way to the stage. A dedicated page is now live that confirms the next-gen Microsoft Surface launch date to be September 22. Not only does this page talk about the launch details, but also gives out a glimpse of how one of the new Surface devices is going to look like. With these two big reveals lined up, Microsoft is certainly going to be at the center of discussion, at least for a couple of weeks.

After having chalked up an impressive 9-year journey, Surface is once again set to stir enthusiasts. However, what remains to be seen is that how many of these Surface devices are in the pipeline. Microsoft has kept it short and crisp with no major hints whatsoever, so relying on leaks and smart guesses is the only way to find it out.

As speculated by Slashgear, we may finally get to see the Surface Duo 2 for which there were leaks sporadically throughout the year. If history is anything to go by, there will be more devices tagging along with Surface Duo 2. Seen in the teaser image is, what appears to be, the successor of Surface Pro 7 that comes with a similar detachable stand and keyboard as accessories which means the Surface Pro 8 is in sight. The portfolio may further expand with the new Surface Book 4.

It’s about time we mark our calendars for September 22 at 11 AM ET to live stream the big event. Microsoft will certainly air it on the website, but watching the launch on YouTube is something that is always an alternative.

Since Windows 11 has a dedicated day for its introduction, we do not expect much to be highlighted on September 22. The stage is only going to be occupied by the Surface lineup.

Together with the new Surface Pro (2017), Microsoft Surface Book 2 and Microsoft Surface Laptop are the latest professional PCs launched by the Redmond giant. These computers offer high-end specs and they are very compact and versatile, but they are also known for being very expensive. But now, the company has decided to officially unveil two cheaper versions of these devices, for people who want a professional laptop but have a low budget. While the standard Surface Laptop comes with an Intel Core i5 or i7 CPU depending on the configuration, the new cheaper version which has just been announced comes with a less powerful Intel Core M3.

It is still a good CPU, but it is just a mid-range processor for a laptop. Further, this version comes with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Thanks to this lower-end hardware side, the price tag drops to just $799, while the standard version which is already in the market costs $999. Microsoft Surface Book 2, in its variant with a 13.5-inch display, has been released in a more affordable version as well, but it is more powerful than the cheaper Surface Laptop. In the new variant, Microsoft Surface Book 2 sports an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage.

The version which is already available starts from $1499 (the one with 256 GB of internal storage), while this one costs just $1199. The rest of the specs of the laptops remains exactly the same as the actual versions. Microsoft Surface Laptop has a metal design with an Alcantara-coated keyboard, a 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 2256 x 1504 pixels, and a multi-gesture trackpad. Microsoft Surface Book 2 has a 13.5-inch touchscreen monitor with a resolution of 3240 x 2160 pixels, a detachable keyboard, and the support to the Surface Dial and the Surface Pen for handwriting and drawing with a high precision.

Microsoft launched its next-generation Surface Laptop in April this year. The Microsoft Surface Laptop is a full-fledged laptop which features a 13.5-inch PixelSense display and is the first Microsoft device to run Windows 10 S. The Surface Laptop has a unique fabric-Alcantara® covered keyboard that is backlit just like that of the Surface Pro 4 and is also spill resistant. The display has a 3:2 aspect ratio and is touted to be the thinnest LCD touch model ever created and put into a laptop.

The Surface Laptop utilises a clean design with the speaker grills absent and has such stunning features as a touch display, as well as a well-studded specs lineup. Despite its sleek look and rugged specs, the Surface Laptop has gotten some damning verdict delivered on it by iFixit. 

Tech blog iFixit tore down the Surface Laptop recently and their observations are causes for concern. The laptop was observed to be difficult to open as there is hardly any screw holding it in place. All the components seem to have been glued to the laptop’s casing. It beats our imagination why a laptop has to be torn open in order to effect a repair on the internals. This could be due to its thin build but then, what happens when the laptop needs fixing. Well, you’ll have to locate an authorised after-sales/service outlet.

iFixit’s verdict is that the Surface Laptop isn’t a laptop but “a glue-filled monstrosity”. The components are not durable and can’t be upgraded and of course, the laptop can’t be opened without destroying it! Who does that?
