In a recent patent published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), we got a look at Surface phone’s design aspects. Initially, Microsoft applied for the patent in July 2017, and a few days back it has been approved for use. The new patent entitled “Hinged Device” puts some light on the design of the upcoming foldable Surface phone. As per the patent, it is confirmed that the Surface phone won’t feature different screens. Instead, it will be followed by a single flexible display.

There will be a single flexible screen that will hook in the panel that folds inward with a “deployable bridge support.” It would result in various benefits for the end users as it will bring non-distorted experience to users. There will be no line that will separate the display and make it difficult for users to write on with a stylus. It brings some more additional benefits such as better viewing angle, read, write and edit text without any distraction of a physical dividing line.

It will help users to attain more productivity with the big screen. Further, users can multitask efficiently on the foldable device with a single flexible display. It is more likely that Microsoft will be targeting the foldable Surface phone for business users rather than casual buyers.

As with Samsung and LG, Microsoft also wants to transform the Surface phone into a tablet. It will help users to get big display when needed, especially business users who continuously need a larger screen on the go for different documents.

Microsoft recently put to rest rumours of its foldable Surface Phone with the recent disclosure that the much-anticipated phone is in the works. The device could even make an appearance earlier than Samsung’s own foldable phone as the U.S company is expected to go official with it later this year. The long-awaited phone was discovered to be codenamed Andromeda while it was revealed that the flexible display will be supplied by LG.

Now, the renders of the device are the latest to feature online via Twitter. The design is created by David Beyer who had earlier shared a video of the render back in December last year. The design is said to be based on the mountain of rumours concerning the device. It is interesting how he could come up with the design considering that the Surface phone rumours have been in existence since 2015 or earlier. But then sifting the latest rumours, information from patents awarded to Microsoft, and patent applications filed by the software giant provided the best possible details of the device to the designer. The phone may likely not look like this but engineering samples produced by Microsoft are said to perfectly resemble Breyer’s renders.

The new renders show the Surface Phone in two different modes -laptop mode and a gaming mode. In the modes, the device shows two different user interfaces, while the top screen shows the display the bottom shows the virtual QWERTY keyboard and in gaming mode, a virtual Xbox controls setup is displayed on the bottom screen. There could also be several other modes.

The design looks awesome and the software also looks promising. Users actually look forward to something like this with a continuous foldable display. This is different from the ZTE Axon M which seems to just have two screens working separately. The Surface Phone is expected to be a foldable device running on a version of Windows 10 which would be called “Andromeda OS”. A set of code discovered in a recent Windows 10 SDK made reference to Andromeda OS. The code shows that the foldable Surface Pro will be powered by an ARM-based processor. There are also rumours of a Snapdragon 845 processor onboard.

Microsoft Surface phone has been in the news for quite a while now, not because we have evidence it exists apart from several patent filings, the phone is the clamour of many fans of the brand. There have been rumours and counter-rumours bothering on its existence. A new rumour that surfaced had tipped the Surface phone to not only come with a foldable hinge but to also feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset. However, while nothing remains confirmed, a new set of images and a video of the Surface Phone concept created by Harry Dohyun Kim have been shared online.

The concept seems to have drawn inspiration from some of the latest patents of the Microsoft Surface phone which was spotted a few months back. The design includes a “hinge screen” that gives the illusion of a solid display when the device is fully opened in tablet mode. The hinged screen would also display certain information based on whether the device is opened in “tent mode,” or is opened like a book.

A recently revealed Microsoft Patent for a Live hinge meant for smartphones re-ignited talks of the Surface Phone. Microsoft Surface phone has been the clamour of many fans of the brand. There have been rumours and counter-rumours bothering on its existence. A new rumour that surfaced has tipped the Surface phone to not only come with a foldable hinge but to also feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipset.

The highly-anticipated Microsoft Surface phone has all the attributes of a flagship model if we are to take into account all the rumours and leaked renders that have come to the open. But the prospect of it coming with a Snapdragon 845 chip under its hood still looks interesting. The project is said to be named Andromeda and the source also claims Microsoft has started shipping out early prototype units to its partners for testing. The rumour also hints that the machine will sport an ARM port of the Windows 10 Core OS, and will use the recently revealed Polaris desktop shell.

Microsoft‘s patent application has just been revealed and it points at what we should likely be expecting on the much-anticipated Surface Phone or perhaps one of the Surface device of the future. The patent application was for a device which comes with a “live hinge” that gives a device with two screens the ability to seamlessly open flat into a tablet mode. The device could also be used in a single screen mode whereby one of the screens is folded all the way around back. Here’s the sketch.

On the schematics above, the gray part in the middle is the live hinge which connects the two screens. The screens are numbered 160 and 170 and the live hinge allows the phone to have an unhindered degree of adjustability. The hinge ensures the connection of both screens is finely done such that the joint could pass unnoticed. But when folded, the screen resembles a pocketbook which may likely still function as a single unit.

Microsoft describes the device as a “multi-part device” in the patent filing. The hinge also seems to allow three different user modes. One of the modes could allow, in certain configurations, a full 360 degrees of rotation. A second mode is the one where the screen is opened 180 degrees with both screens conjoined into one larger display. In the third mode, the device can be closed with no screens exposed. The patent filing also specifically refer to the size limitations of current single-screen mobile phones which strongly suggest that this is indeed what we might see out of the rumoured Surface Phone.

Microsoft recently declared that they won’t release any hardware product based on Windows 10 Mobile. The feature-updates of the operating system have stopped as well and according to the company, the next updates will only contain fixes and security improvements. CEO Satya Nadella said that if a new mobile device was to come in the future, it will be entirely different from what we saw until now. But there are many people who did not lose their hope about a Surface Phone, and they may be right.

A new design patent surfaced at the USPTO: a 2-in-1 device with a self-regulating hinge. This is what can be found in the description: “pair of self-regulating hinge assemblies rotatably securing hinge ends of the first and second portions around a first hinge axis associated with the first portion and a second hinge axis associated with the second hinge axis so that an extent of rotation around the first hinge axis corresponds to an extent of rotation around the second hinge axis”. The alleged Microsoft Surface Phone includes two displays which can become one, and it can also be used with a physical keyboard.

As Microsoft said goodbye to Windows 10 Mobile, this device will probably run Windows 10 on ARM and it may sport a flagship Snapdragon SoC by Qualcomm. According to rumours, Microsoft Surface Phone is actually codenamed Andromeda, and it is worth mentioning that this is not the first patent surfaced online. Another one has recently shown a prototype of a single camera which can be used on a foldable mobile device, even when its display is folded. Further, a leakster has recently found an app called Journal on Windows Whiteboard, which hints at two pages, one on the left and one of the right, for content creators. However, there is still no official declaration by the company about a Microsoft Surface Phone.

It has been four months since the Microsoft Lumia Weibo account was renamed as Nokia mobile phones in China but the company is yet to come out to announce the death of the Lumia brand. But Microsoft China seems to have confirmed the closure of the Lumia line.

Microsoft China recently posted a series of videos on video sharing website Bilibili in China which individually showcases the entire Lumia lineup. The videos contain promotional teasers for a long lineup of Microsoft Lumia phones in the Lumia series. From the videos, the Nokia 650 is likely the last Lumia smartphone Microsoft will be selling. Recall that there are rumours Microsoft is killing the Lumia line in favour of a new Surface phone brand. The post accompanying the videos reveals that the videos are to commemorate the classic series which the company began in 2011. In addition, it reveals categorically that the Lumia series have been shelved.

While we are not sure of the emergence of a new Surface phone brand from Microsoft, the post contains the rider “let’s look forward”. This could be a reference to a new product line which could possibly be the Surface phone, just when we though Windows 10 devices are dead and buried. So, while the Lumia brand may be dead, that doesn’t mean Windows mobile is dead. We may likely be seeing the re-emergence of Windows mobile phones soon, not so soon anyway. A recent report has suggested that the company has postponed the launch of the Surface Phone to 2018.

Alleged renders of Microsoft Surface Phone renders had surfaced yesterday. Even though they were found to be fake, the trial production of the smartphone is rumored to begin soon.

Microsoft Surface Phone Leaked Renders

The new renders of the rumored Surface Phone have been revealed by a well-known Chinese leakster on Weibo. What’s interesting about the leaked photos is that the smartphone carries Surface Phone branding at the bottom side on its rear.

Microsoft Surface Phone leaked photos have surfaced several times, but none were found to be true. Even the new renders are fake as the handset features Carl Zeiss branding that is not in use since 2013, Phone Arena reported. In fact, these renders may belong to an older prototype of a Lumia smartphone.

The Redmond giant has not confirmed whether it is working on Surface Phone. However, in the previous month, rumors started swirling that the company has entered an agreement with Taiwan-based Pegatron as the only ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) for production of the Surface Phone.

Microsoft Surface Phone Variants

Early speculations suggest that Microsoft is testing numerous prototypes of Surface Phone. All the prototype units are said to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 that comes with Quick Charge 4.0. The fast charging feature reportedly can gain 50 percent battery power by charging the device for 15 minutes.

One of the Surface Phone prototypes has 64-bit Windows 10 Mobile with 6 GB of RAM. This variant seems to support X86 apps. It is rumored that this prototype cannot run X86 apps directly but it will allow users to install them. These apps can be only run in Continuum.

Another prototype also features 64-bit Windows 10 Mobile with 4 GB of RAM. This model is said to be incapable of running X86 apps in Continuum. These variants suggest that different models targeting consumer and enterprise users are in works.

3-in-1 Form Factor

A laptop dock accessory that will allow users to connect Surface Phone to it is also speculated to be in works. By this, the Microsoft Surface Phone will be able to deliver 3-in-1 form factor.

Hence, the Surface Phone would allow customers to use it in three ways. Apart from using it as a handheld smartphone, the device can also deliver full-fledged desktop experience by continuing to a larger screen through the Continuum. The laptop dock is expected to replace users’ laptop.

Microsoft Surface Phone Release Date

It is expected to come preloaded within Redstone 3 update of Windows 10. Hence, its release date is expected to set around August or September 2017.

Rumors about Microsoft’s plans to build a smartphone with their own Windows Phone 8 platform becoming stronger. Even now some evidence emerging that have been circulating on the internet.

However, until now there is no official word that comes out from Microsoft telling about the existence of this phone. And still seems to be quite long if the rumor was true. So let’s get wait and see.
